OH MY GOD! I was insane for these guys! Pretty good taste for a 12-year-old kid... I've never seen this clip! I just did a little research. This Tonight Show episode aired on 10/05/1965. Their "Just Like Us" album was released in 1966 (with Steppin' Out and Just Like Me on it). So this appearance is from before they even had a hit that wasn't a cover! Wow!
Thanks for sharing, Raider Rooter. The general population needs to be able to see the early Raiders playing live in all of their R&B glory. Looking forward to what you've got later this year.
i was but a child but my sister was a big fan and we would stay up late anytime she knew when they were on tv and we watched happening every saturday they were great entertainers they gave it 110 percent every performance
Raider Rooter 1967 I was only 11 y/o and I think I was more interested in Bugs Bunny Cartoons than watching Johnny Carson however I never missed an episode of "Where The Action Is!" Paul's piano playing reminds me of a song that had come out a couple years earlier by Charlie Rich called "Moe Haired Same!"
Woodrow Magnus ,, because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland has its finger inserted. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols says the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a piss stain
Rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame is run by a bunch a liberal idiots who are now in their 70s late 70s and they will and duck some idiot like Bon Jovi for somebody like Paul Revere and the Raiders they will not Induct them really crazy
This is the one that's supposed to be absolutely live! Thanks so much for sharing this with us. I love the very early clips of the band and this is the first time I'm seeing the guitar fight. Dangerous. If the timing wasn't just right, someone would be in for a lot of pain.
OSHA would've gone insane for their second performance. Fang and Drake were standing on top of their amplifiers and Mark was on top of Paul's piano and they were ALL doing the Raider shuffle in unison while singing "Ooh-poo-pa-Doo".
I think I remember hearing this on the radio. I have been meaning to go to the library and get the headline from The Warren (Ohio) Tribune Chronicle. About 1065-66, possibly later. The Raiders appeared at Packard Music Hall. During the performance, Mark Lindsay had a microphone in each hand. He was sweating profusely and got a "cross current" and knocked him out. They closed the curtain and called the fire department, who revived him. I was not there, remember reading headline, something like "Rock and Roll Star Felled." If I find, will let you know. It was a "Good Thing" for Mark, he is alright. Take care. It is called Packard Music Hall because Packard automobiles were made in Warren, Ohio from 1899-1903, before moving to Detroit. The National Packard Museum is here. Not real large, but interesting.
They Should have done "Kicks" or "Just Like Me", It would have been better serving that this on live T.V. I loved their music then and still do today.!!
We have them LIVE on Carson TWICE, plus LIVE in Paris from 1969, sadly without all the screaming girls and Raider Mania. We post them in the Facebook Raider Rooter Group: facebook.com/groups/1505440749753060
I've got to ask though, what's with the edit/cut at around the 1:03 mark? It's a little jarring. Was it like that on the original broadcast? Amazing that this still exists and in color no less! Most of the Johnny Carson stuff from the 60's only exists in kinescope form.
In order to avoid copyright issues, I have shortened the video and added the DO NOT COPY-NOT FOR SALE overlay. I do this with all of my UA-cam videos. So far, my channel has survived, where others have been shut down by UA-cam.

Paul Smith, It is plugged in. He is using a black curled cord that doesn't show up well on camera. It can be seen in a close up in the second song in the full video posted to the Raider Rooter Facebook Group.
If you like this performance, you gotta see their second performance on the same show. Fang and the Kid jump on top of their amps and do the Raider Shuffle in unison.
Kim Kurtz, respectfully, you don't know what you are talking about. This is from live TV in 1965. That is Mark Lindsay singing lead with Paul Revere. Ask Mark, or any REAL Raider fan.
That is absolutely Mark Linsday's growly rock n' roll voice. I had the pleasure of chatting with Uncle Paul several times before his passing. One of those silly things we had in common was we could both do silly voices or accents. He could do a GREAT impersonation of Peter Lorre or Vincent Price. Paul could sound like anybody if he really tried. So, I can say with a little bit of authority that this is both Mark and Paul singing live just as Raider Rooter has pointed out.
Greatest 'show band' of all time.
Really, there was no competition.

Amazing talents led by Paul Revere. What a group. Special memories.

i was but a child but my sister was a big fan and we would stay up late anytime she knew when they were on tv and we watched happening every saturday they were great entertainers they gave it 110 percent every performance
wow this was great moments of FUN!!!! more, more, more Please!!!
america's band.....love the Raiders
I do not remember them being on Johnny Carson. Loved it!
The Raiders were on Carson at least TWICE. See my Independence Day Celebration Video.;)

me either!
Those heavy uniform coats and attire are awesome! They look right out of central casting!
How come these guys aren't in the R & R HOF?

@D W I like Jim Valley too. These guys do belong there.
D W Mitch Ryder in the Detroit wheels from Detroit Michigan a really really good band
Totally live!
I think they stunned the audience! LOL!

That's exactly what I was thinking!
It was during rehearsal that they collected all their lumps and bruises. 😅
OSHA would've gone insane for their second performance. Fang and Drake were standing on top of their amplifiers and Mark was on top of Paul's piano and they were ALL doing the Raider shuffle in unison while singing "Ooh-poo-pa-Doo".
Headchops. Yes it has to be rehearsed and timed right, but cool to watch when executed well.

Should read 1965 to 1966. Sorry.
Terrific!
They Should have done "Kicks" or "Just Like Me", It would have been better serving that this on live T.V. I loved their music then and still do today.!!
You took the words right out of my mouth, what a wasted opportunity while they had the chance playing live.
Those songs weren't written at the time of this performance
great stuff!
I was wondering if there was any genuine live footage of this band. Too bad they weren't their better songs.
We have them LIVE on Carson TWICE, plus LIVE in Paris from 1969, sadly without all the screaming girls and Raider Mania. We post them in the Facebook Raider Rooter Group: facebook.com/groups/1505440749753060
SO SO SO SO GREAT !
KInda makes ya wanna wish it was 1966 again...
you will also here this tune on an old song called Jolly Green Giant
saw them Cleveland area not sure of year 1967🎸🎛🚓
1965
Underrated and missed. Try "Hungry" for a solid meal.
Wonder how many times Fang and the Kid brained each other practicing that move?
never.
what is the airdate of the episode?
If one of them forgets to duck at 1:02 off with their heads.🤣🤣🤣

what was the air date of this performance?
10/05/1965
What year was this?
Portland, Oregon??????? I don't think so. Boise, Idaho.
Their first big shot of fame was in Portland.
Rip off of the jolly green giant
The song Big Boy Pete was around a long time before The Kingsmen Jolly Green Giant. Howdy from Dallas Texas
Fang , you forgot to plug in your bass.
Paul Smith, It is plugged in. He is using a black curled cord that doesn't show up well on camera. It can be seen in a close up in the second song in the full video posted to the Raider Rooter Facebook Group.
never heard that one a lot of schtick goin on dont know how you play and do that
Shows how amazingly talented Phil "Fang" Volk and Drake Levin were. True story that Jimi Hendrix learned moves from watching the Raiders.
If you like this performance, you gotta see their second performance on the same show. Fang and the Kid jump on top of their amps and do the Raider Shuffle in unison.
Look for it buried deep in the Independence Day and Christmas Celebrations here on my Raider Rooter 1967 UA-cam Channel.
If anyone knows this group, this is not there voices, no way Mark Lindsay's voice is in this.....
Kim Kurtz, respectfully, you don't know what you are talking about. This is from live TV in 1965. That is Mark Lindsay singing lead with Paul Revere. Ask Mark, or any REAL Raider fan.
Paul Revere is singing lead, with Mark Lindsay singing harmony. Listen to the lines that Mark sings alone, and you will know its him.

Only about 15 years after the Blacks were doing this.
What year was this?
