Nikki might have been an ungrateful kid, but y’all can’t say that Mackenzie is any better. Girl wanted to close down an animal shelter and let dogs and cats roam the streets because Brandon didn’t like her
They’re both horrible people lmao
Love your pfp! Wonyoung is so beautiful
@@delorita394 thank u!
Literally. And when she locked them in a storage closet? Constantly bullied them? Tripped Nicki at lunch? She was so horrible and classist for no reason.
At least Mackenzie is more reasonable. She's a rich kid who's neglected by her parents who most likely has mental problems
I remember the books not making much sense to me as I got older in elementary school, like when Nikki goes on tour and all of the band members of that one boy band fall for her along with Brandon and that one other guy. I was really confused because she had this dream life while she was supposed to be this quirky relatable girl that always has the worst luck. Plus she’s 14.
She truly is a Mary Sue.
How is she still considered unpopular????????? She literally had a reality tv show made about her
What?? I never finished the series because the books were all taken in my library. Return your books in a month, people! Anyways, I got to the point where she started dating the guy, maybe a little bit past it? I remember they went on a date, ice skating maybe? But whatt? I only remember her being in a movie or sth

My favorite book in the series was not about Nikki at all, but Mackenzie. I always loved the 9th book where Mackenzie steals her diary and starts writing in it. I always found it so fascinating.

I feel like you’re analyzing Nikki’s character from a very adult perspective and making it seem like certain things she’d just be able to know. Middle school was rough okay 😭
Everyone has their own perspectives. There's no one correct perspective on this book. I had a similar perspective when I first started reading dork diaries back in middle school, despite me not being an adult yet.
OMG, I loved theses books.
But they lost me after book 9 where MacKenzie stole the diary. Because that was the first time I noticed that nikki was just a bad as her sometimes and because it turned her into my faveourite Character.
Edit: Also MacKenzie is a way better Artist then Nikki
They lost me after book nine also😭
same, drama queen is my favourite book for this reason😭
I had to stop after book 7. Middle school children doing a kissing booth type thing gave me the ick.

i always thought it was funny how the series was called dork diaries when nikki never really acts dorky, at most she's just kind of awkward sometimes, but she doesn't really have any "dorky" interests, she's not particularly smart or nerdy (one of her friends liked books a lot,i think it was zoey but am unsure, but she had no interest in reading iirc) she acts pretty much exactly how a typical teen girl in these kinds of stories would act, and if anything i think she'd be a popular girl like mackenzie irl
also when i was younger and into this series i remember thinking it was basically if diary of a wimpy kid was written for a female audience, and that if greg and nikki existed in the same universe they'd probably get along, and tbh i still stand by that, although it would be chaotic and awful for everyone involved
I remember dork diaries. I think at first, it was a cute story. There was a book where she becomes a figure skater or enters a figure skating competition. The details of it are fuzzy, but I remember she did things that made me think "Wow, she's not much better than Mackenzie".

I adored that series too! Only thing I disliked about it was the love interest; Hudson literally had the personality of a wet piece of cardboard. Plus I don’t even think Jamie’s crush on him progressed throughout the series whatsoever which sucked.
As problematic as Nikki is, Dork diaries will always have a place in my part as my first book series I was obsessed with😂

When I was young, I went to Girl Scout Camp every summer. One summer, I was in a cabin with a girl who was legitimately convinced she was a vampire. She snuck out at night, she told stories about killing people to drink their blood, she bit my fucking hand. The reason why I tell this story is this: SHE STOLE MY BRAND NEW, HARDCOVER DORK DIARIES BOOK AT THE END OF CAMP. IT'S BEEN TEN YEARS AND I'M STILL PISSED.
I agree with you. The way chole and Zoe stick with her all the time. Nikki doesn't even appreciate that much like she should.
Like, they are supporting her no matter what she is doing. And she ended up hurting them in a very wrong way.
Hot take, as somene who kept reading the books way into adulthood because they were funny, this series is actually WAY funnier to read when you're grown. Kids might worry with Nikki when she's going off being an idiot, but as an adult you're just laughing to herself and shaking your head like, "Yeah…I sure worried about stupid stuff in middle school." I mean, remember thinking that one minor embarrassment would ruin your reputation and your life for the rest of eternity?
ok very off topic from dork diaries, but, that bee pillow pet you have in the back 😭i love that one!!! it was the very first pillow pet i got when i was 10 like 12 years ago lmho you brought back SO many memories w/ this video between dork diaries and the pillow pet
The only thing I remember about Dork Diaries is that the drawings were fairly detailed but then had literal stick limbs and gloves(who am I to judge I can barely draw hands either).
I think the art slowly developed over time. I remember them having normal limbs in more recent books too 🤔
I remember liking these books soley because they heavily romanticized school life and crushes and drama. And to my 3rd grader brain, it made me happy to see cool things happen to not to far from my age
NEEDED this video - I tried to reread the Dork Diaries series recently and couldn't keep up because Nikki was always SO EMBARASSED to be alive and I just couldn't relate. In the same breath Mackenzie is completely psychotic and that one book where she stole Nikki's diary was too much like ... you're rich and popular and ur SO MAD for why? who cares lol. Also side note: the author writes that way because she's a Gleek. I only got into Glee as a kid because the author would post Glee updates to her blog lol
My mom loved this series when I was in elementary school and I would occasionally sneak one of her books and read it when I thought no one was looking. I remember the protagonist taking karate classes and her instructor would do nothing but eat copious amounts of food during every lesson. The series was wild.
My sister used to always read this and Malory Towers in Middle School, even I started reading some of it when I got into middle school myself, don't remember much other than her freaking out about her leg hair.
I saw these all over my middle and elementary schools. I never read them, but now realizing they would’ve been my personality
I knew something was up with Nikki, if I made video essays I would make one about why she's a terrible protagonist. I don't have the energy to reread any of these books but her "arguing" (insulting the other person) was how I used to argue because I didn't see any smart arguing, got me into some trouble later down the line
I remember being 8 years old and seeing Dork Diaries on the shelf at my school's Schoolastic bookfare. I got really angry that they existed because they were "Copying Diary of a Wimpy kid"
8 year old me was a tiny plagiarism purist
Who remembers the movie announcement on the book website? 🙋🏾♀️
I loved these books!! 💗💗
These books are the reason I journal and am a writer so they will forever have a special meaning to me
i met the author and the illustrator of dork diaries in 2020, and she drew me in my sketchbook. it was really cool
what really makes me laugh is how nikki and greg (from diaries of a wimpy kid) would have TOTALLY hit if off. greg was an AMAZING main character because he wasn't a good person, but always ended up doing the (somewhat) right thing in the end of the book. he was meant to be funny, and everything he did and went through was extremely unlikely for a regular middle schooler. his whole character was entertaining, and wasn't an annoying like nikki. he was obviously a narcissist, but it was a part of the joke. (even when greg was just a plain bully to his family and friends, or even people he didn't know, it always came back to him, which was the comedy style of the series).
omg did anyone else color in the drawing of their books? i loved them sm 😭😭🫶🏽
I remember when I was in second grade, every girl in my class treated these books like they were written by William Shakespeare himself so to fit in I would check out these books, but I wouldn’t actually read them. I would just skip to page to page just for the pictures and just by what you said in the beginning blew me away, because since I didn’t read a single page of this thing I never knew any of this
The puppsitter book was the only dork diaries book I’ve ever read and honestly? This makes me wanna read the rest
i still remember being in like 3rd or 4th grade staying up all night to finish the 3rd book specifically since it was due the next day, and as unhinged as this series was, it will always have a special place in my heart
I used to borrow these from the library all the time and I have the first 2 lying around in my room
I always thought Nikki was always freaking out for nothing… to me it was always about Jamie Kelly aka Dear Dumb Diary I thought these were so funny and clever
Came in to see if this was in universe to "Diary of a wimpy Kid " and if so, how so. It would be fun to have her be related.
2nd "Dorky wants to be popular" Such a common trope. I feel like that same narrative drives every slice of life story. Well not all of them, but a lot.
Its like adults trying to write kids while not knowing what kids are. I don't think I have ever found a story that represents MY personal experience.
I also feel like a fun twist on the story would be to have a protagonist who doesn't care to be popular. Some one who rather then try to be like the popular kids wants the popular kids to be more like them. Or maybe a story about some one fighting back against society pressures to embrace who they want to be. Or maybe a story about children with major cultural barrios or who just think different or learn different or some thing.
And while you can compare to Ladybug, I think its more like you can compare to a LOT of shows.
I think the best written kids are (focusing on well written characters more then well written trauma or super heroes lots of stories have well written kids but they add other layers)
Hey Arnold
Phoebe and her Unicorn
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
Loud House but only some times
Ghost and Molly McGee
Weekenders
Studio Ghibli
azumanga daioh and Yotsuba
King of the Hill
Daria, Maybe I don't remember it well.
a lot of other stories are well written, Owl House, Kadocha, Ladybug, Code Lyoko, Peanuts but they stray off in directions that make me feel like the focus is less on topic
I think the truth of children is that they ARE disrespectful, dark, shallow, self absorbed, perverts they really would use those words.
mean spirited protagonists are hard to like Thats why I don't like Fairy Odd Parents or Foster's Home, or Johny Quest
I don‘t remember Daria having that problem. A good series to check out would be Amelia Rules. That series touches on the school social hierarchy as well as other subjects about growing up.
youve unlocked a core memory of pheobe and her unicorn. I loved them, loved the designs, how they fit the weird kid trope that I loved, oml..
I don’t know how the algorithm knew I was obsessed with this books as a child, but thank you for this amazing video
the mentally ill line is insane to me because when i was in 5th grade (which would've been around the first time i read these books) i had no idea what mental illness was 😭

My favourite was always thee one where she gets hit by a dodge ball and dreams the entire book
tbh forget dork diaries, forget diary of a wimpy kid, forget dear dumb diary. stan the popularity papers!!! it has really good explicit poc and gay representation (julie is asian-american and has two dads) as well as representation of different family dynamics (lydia's mom is single and raising two kids on her own) and it was wayyy ahead of its time (the first book came out in 2010 i think?), it's genuinely really charming and well made with a lot of attention to detail (i'm pretty sure the entire thing was actually hand-drawn and handwritten AND it's in full color unlike dork diaries and diary of a wimpy kid which just use monochrome stick figures that are a little too clean-looking to be believably drawn by a 12- to 14-year-old), the two main characters have a healthy stable friendship with each other as well as friendships with other characters (roland, sukie, lisa, jen, etc.) and good relationships with their families, and they learn and grow a lot throughout the course of the series without it seeming too preachy or taking itself too seriously. and unlike nikki they don't say ableist slurs!!! it's not perfect ofc it's kinda cheesy and predictable if you know the format and there are a couple of minor issues like the cast still being predominantly white even if it features one asian-american main character and like three other secondary named poc (julie's biological dad, sukie, and nabil) tho tbf i only read the first three books before i grew out of them and it's been a decade since i did, but overall it's a better tween first person journal-format book series than most and i'd highly recommend it to anyone in the same age bracket / demographic as dork diaries
Jesus Christ that’s to many words-
Is this how kids find books they like nowadays?
i still have all of my dd books reading them is always so therapeutic
I have all the books. Hard covers too. I got the first book for my birthday once and literally became obsessed. Mostly because I related to Nikki a lot, especially at the age that I read the first book. I had one heck of a time watching this video and reliving those moments, especially the ones from the earlier books that I haven't read in a LONG while! This video really makes me want to read them all again for some good 'ol nostalgia points! Absolutely LOVE this series!
Also, why not list my 3 fav characters here while I'm at it.
1. Chloe

i just went back and looked in the chapters you said because i had absolutely zero memory of the r-slur being mentioned and its just not in there at all for me? maybe they ended up taking it out at some point cause i do have a line that says “but they called him Mr. Snot and another not-so-nice word” or something like that.

even if the series is supposed to be satirical and make fun of middle school girls, it does it in a way that isn't obvious enough to its target audience. older readers, especially girls that went through nikki's phase(s), will be able to tell, but the average 10 year old girl reading the books won't. they'll be trained into thinking that acting like nikki and replicating her mindset and behaviors is acceptable. im saying this as someone who both acted like nikki and have had friends that acted like her because the books taught us that hating other girls for their femininity and being a toxic friend is okay. the books portray being feminine/girly as a weakness, not a strength and/or just part of who someone is. mackenzie is constantly made fun of for wearing lip gloss and fashionable clothes, but those are just things she likes. theres zero reason nikki should be making fun of her for what she likes to wear other than just trying to appeal to the readers who think theyre quirky and unique. lots of books have unlikable protagonists, but it doesn't work for dork diaries because the books try SO HARD to make nikki likable instead of purposefully portraying her negatively.
nothing about nikki is relatable and she potrays herself with no flaws. in diary of a wimpy kid, this theme is repeated, but greg DOES have a stronger moral system than nikki and is able to appreciate things in his life and stays consistently relatable for readers. hes not in a famous band, hes never had a reality show created about him, and he constantly strikes out with girls. greg grows from his mistakes and through narration and the other characters, he faces the reality that he's not a good person. nikki, on the other hand, is almost encouraged by her friends to act the way she does and mackenzie is really the only person that says things how they are.
the books in the series are very two-dimensional and serve little to no positive lessons for the female readers that they so desperately want to appeal to. i think a really good book for girls that feel different/outcasted is Invisible Emmie. emmie is everything nikki isnt, including a lovable character with flaws and strengths. overall just a much better book with a much more likable protag. also dear dumb diary ate dork diaries UP.
GOD i remember reading this shit in like 1st grade and hating nikki bc i thought she was so insufferable😭i just stopped reading after the book where mackenzie stole her diary bc i realised she was literally a 10× funnier and more entertaining narrator than the literal main character

-The Ugly Truth: Greg goes out of his way to make up with Rowley, stating that he can't even remember what their fight was about.
Dog Days: Greg and his dad bond over their shared hatred of Lil' Cutie.
-Cabin Fever: Greg decides to clean the posters off of the school without Rowley, not wanting him to get in trouble for something he was dragged into. The main character starts out a total bitch, your typical high school mean girl, the queen bee popular bitch, but one day she gets glasses and braces, as you could surmise from the title, and gets humbled hard when her friends start treating her basically the way she's been treating everyone else. She learns her lesson, becomes a better person, starts making better decisions and makes new friends, it's a good read all around, really.
Edit: I have been informed by a very nice person who replied that it's actually called "How to Rock Glasses and Braces", so if you wanna read it, look for that, not what I said lmao

I know Nikki seems very problematic now but we need to remember that these books were released in a different time where the 'not like othe girls' or 'unpopular misunderstood artsy' girl was considered relatable. Yes it may have aged somewhat badly but for the time, these books were everything. Maybe I'm biased by my own nostalgia but this series remains iconic in my opinion.
I agree so hard! I will have a soft spot for this series even acknowledging how poorly it aged
agreed, and as someone with BPD she was still relatable lol because i loved being the center of attention
Also, there were a lot of people in the 2000's who genuinely thought that being a nerd or introvert was, like, an unforgivable sin (especially if you were a girl) so that definitely contributed to the NLOG trend.
In my story, I'm actually making the NLOG character the antagonist. Like... my protagonist is the kind you'd *think* would brag about how "unlike" other girls she is, being an introverted nerdy type who just does her own thing, but honestly she's too preoccupied with doing her own thing to even really care what the other girls are like, and she gets on *fine* with most of the other girls, really only taking issue with their $€x!$t attitudes towards boys. But there's one girl at her school she can't stand, and that's the "cool" girl, who thinks she's better than all the other girls at school because she's popular with all the boys. She's basically sort of a deconstruction of the "girl next door" archetype, and how damaging that can potentially be when applied to girls in real life (at least in the idealised "cute innocent" way that's often portrayed in fiction).
i agree very much
Nikki is really unlikeable tbh and it gets kind of annoying that by like the 12th book Brandon and Nikki have STILL not “officially” gotten together, like even after kissing many times and him literally TELLING her he likes her she’s like “Omg.. Idk if he likes me.. I think he might like me!🤯”
@@ammiebobabb okay yeah, I just meant that it still took such a long time
Lmaooo that’s so true 😹😹😭
Ikr.. even on all the books, he shows such clear signs yet.. she's as blind as Adrain to actually see them
EXACTLY IT MADE ME SO MAD OMG he even admitted it and every time he looked at another girl she's like "omg he likes her he hates me😢😢"
I think that also makes it realistic tbh. At that age that how girls tend to think.
Dork diaries hold a special place in my heart. They helped me get through bullying in elementary and even now that i am older i still love those books. Its been three years since the last one but my love for them hasnt died even when i am almost an actual adult in a few years.
I feel the same way I went to barns & noble’s recently and saw the books for the first time in forever and it brought me back to when I was elementary school checking all the books out from the library 😭💕
In my school district, we have a book fair that ranged from K-8 for me, and I remember every year in elementary school buying 1-2 Dork Diaries books and I ended up having 12 books in 6th grade 😩
same here! i read dork diaries all the time back in elementary n it helped me get through bullying. it was a terrible time but reading the series always made me feel better
Same!!!
me too but i was such a loner. this book raised me lol
Growing up is realising the main character was extremely ungrateful,
She has great friends, a boyfriend, shes literally famous?!
Yet shes always upset because 1 girl doesnt like her
which is kinda gay ngl-
She was upset because Mackenzie was always doing everything in her power to ruin her day or make her look bad
mackenzie was a bully be serious
I mean i feel like diary of a wimpy kid was the male equivalent of this and i always realized greg was a narcissist loser
Except that girl was literally a bully that was constantly after her and harassing her and Nikki's fame got in the way of her friendships and relationships and brought a bunch of unnecessary stress to her life. Some adults can barely handle fame, and y'all expect a like 14ish girl to be perfect and just being to flawlessly handle everything in her life? The book series is literally a diary, it's her venting her feelings obviously she's gonna focus on the negatives and stuff lol
as a kid i always imagined her as like a sophomore/junior in high school, what middle schooler goes through this like… bruh she went on a world tour 💀
kpop idols
that would honestly make a lot more sense
@@m0nbebe so hyein of them
I think she was 9th grade which makes her technically a high schooler
@@pixelmagicbeat8131she was in 8th but at the end of the 13th book she turned 15 which means she’s going to be in 9th grade in the 16th book
the entire time i am watching this video i am slowly doing the math and my brain just went "oh so it's diary of a wimpy kid but for girls"
No but that was literally my thought process when I saw it at the store - I was going to buy wimpy kid but just got this instead, because for girls
Thinking about how the story plays out, I was also making comparisons to diary of a wimpy kid.
Bruh even the main character is also a horrible person. The only difference is that she's portrayed as a normal teenager, while the audience knows that Greg's actions are wrong.
It literally is lmao
Lmao that was literally the way my mom described the series to me to get me to read it
It was SO annoying how Nikki always said how bad her life was when she went on tour with a freaking band
I am like nikki - My life isnt good but isnt bad - My bully is terrible and lmost crosses out anything good about my lifw
Nikki:almost drowned, was cyberbullied, had the sweater which she saved to buy for two months ruined, got anxiety about a fake tuition bill, got a concussion, etc
People: She is so ungrateful
@@kolapooluseye6639 FR and ppl are still like : She gets everything,
MacKenzie and Nikki are both awful yet somehow MacKenzie comes off as a more normal person
Like Janice Ian said: “I know I’m a b*tch”
naw wtf, MacKenzie is lashing out and constantly picking the fights
@@stuffwithsoph8264 yet she feels like a real human being. Nikki likes to say that she is nice but all she does is get upset and complain about MacKenzie, complain about her little sister(valid and normal), has good friend and family while being selfish and not realizing how much better she has it than MacKenzie
@@theoutsiderjess1869 i dont see how complaining makes you a bad or unrealistic person. she's supposed to be like 13-14? thats all i did at her age. youre reaching.
@@stuffwithsoph8264 there is complaining and then there is being pissed and obsessed because this one girl won't like you. Nikki genuinely doesn't even appreciate the friends she has and yet somehow they still like her alongside her crush/boyfriend by the time I reached her age was the time I stopped reading these books because Nikki is basically a selfish Mary Sue
These books were essentially my life back in fourth grade. I didn't have many friends, so I checked out the second book in the library because the original cover was really funny. And I never looked back! Until a couple years ago, when I wanted to take a walk down memory lane to reread the books. And you hit it right on the mark: Nikki does not deserve Chloe, Zoey, and Brandon, or her family! And I never realized just how weird certain sentences sounded.
Nikki should actually get the rope, she's SO ungrateful. Sorry if this sounds a little too harsh. Since I'm older now, I realized Rachel's writing style is actually to blame here.
These books gave me anxiety because nothing ever went right. Everything she did was always going wrong and it was STRESSFUL
literally
This is the most relatable thing I've ever read
they gave me secondhand embarrassment but I LIVED for it
YES SO TRUE
Yes like they’d TRY to find a way to make it go wrong, like they’d go on tour or they’d have a plan but then at the last moment Mackenzie somehow identity thefts the whole band, and sabotages the entire show
Thanks to Brianna, it made me realize how annoying I was to my older sister and stopped. It was such an eye-opener, a personality awareness, because I really hated Brianna and was devastated to know I acted just like her. Nowadays my sister and I are very close. Thanks Dork Diaries, I learned to stop being a little shit :)
Nice that you matured from reading these books!
I love that so much for you! And I'm glad you too are closer now :)
