Not to mention in the movies, when Greg tells his brother that Holly called him Fregley, mistaking Greg for some weird disgusting kid, Rodrick cheers him up, saying how she probably messed up or intentionally got it wrong because she’s into him.
I’d be mad at the party but then be surprised they were able to fix everything before I got home even the door with permanent marker then I would show them how to remove permanent marker without a single stain left on the door because hey they fixed it temporarily but not bad
Funnily enough, Jeff Kinney wrote a short story about a guy who plays pranks on his younger brother and some of the pranks are the same ones Rodrick plays on Greg. At the end of the story the little brother stops falling for the pranks and the older brother is proud of him
Honestly i had the same thing with my little brother. I used to tell him harmless stories and prank him by convincing they were true. Nothing serious just silly things like he used to be dog. When he got older not only did he learn to be a bit more critical of my stories but he also learned that when should not just take everything at face value. I was happy he learned that.
@@xracula I forget the name of the story but I’m pretty sure it was in a collection of short stories. I think the collection was called Guys Read: Funny Business
I feel like we miss a lot of the cool things Rodrick does for Greg too. Looking at the movies, which are far more neutral than the books, Rodrick constantly covers for Greg and takes the heat for stuff. And we even see that Greg constantly pranks him back too, in usually far more mean spirited ways.
And even in the books Greg is the one writing the diary... More often than not for all we know Roderick might actually be a lot nicer to Greg than we realize but Greg just never puts it down on the book whatsoever because he's fueling a narrative that his brother was the worst thing ever.
It's why I really like the movies. It gives these characters more dimensions than Greg gives them in the books. Rodrick in particular really benefits from it
What pranks does Greg pull on rodrick that’s worse than doing an entire house party and blaming it on his brothe? Rodrick is more sane but you gotta remind me cause I don’t remember why Greg does to rodrick
And on top of the harmless pranks if Greg pranks are more cruel then then Roderick pranks then Roderick getting angry at Greg is perfectly justified every time he does get mad at him because I personally know what that is like since my little brother also pulls crappy pranks on me one of them being extremely painful two words and every guy will know "Croch shot"
Rodrick: *throws a party* Susan: grounded manny: *turns out the power and leaves everyone with no food while in a blizzard because no one taught him how to tie his shoes* Susan: oh
Rodrick gives "cut my family out of my life after high school" vibes, and I wouldn't blame him. A dad who doesn't love him, a mother who so obviously prefers his younger brother, and two siblings that are their own separate nightmare...yeah, it'd probably be for the best if he just ditched them.
I feel like he just plans to jump into his van and leave to start a musical career, the way he's so desperate to give his band a good name and get music-related jobs
I think Rodrick is just trying to make the best of a bad situation. He's realized his entire family has several screws lose, but he realized he could take advantage of that. Rodrick knows that he and Greg are essentially forgotten by his parents, so he can take his stress out on Greg. His parents don't approve of his musical career, but he uses it to keep them away from him. When your parents go away and leave you alone, of course you're going to have a party, and he was responsible enough to not leave the house a total wreck. I think it's possible Rodrick noticed the way Manny uses social engineering to get what he wants, and Rodrick learned that he could exploit his parents as well to keep them from making his life hell. Overall I'd consider Rodrick very smart and cunning. He's aware of his situation but he's able to survive without losing his mind.
Yeah. I manipulate my family too. Not like gaslighting them, or abusing them mentally, but just doing what keeps everyone “stable”. Ending fights and arguments before they even start, preparing the environment for peace etc. Just don’t wanna end up hearing them having screaming matches or smack fears cause my older sister doesn’t know when to STFU when taking to the person who supplies her with food, water, and Internet.
It's make me wonder if somehow rodrick can help his brothers avoid juvenil and prison by somehow taking them both away from susan and frank 😔😔😔😔😟😟😟😟😟😰😰😰😰
i like the idea of Greg being an unreliable narrator. the way he describes Rodrick is just how a younger sibling would probably view their older sibling who is going through that awkward puberty phase where everything is shit and being a rebel is the most interesting thing.
Literally. My younger siblings view me as a lazy shit. But if they would need to teach someone about the Math that is so simple to you, they would be irritated too! But my parents excuse it in a way ,,They are younger''. ,,Younger'' like 4 years younger it's not that much
Rodrick’s not dumb, he’s just misunderstood. He has dyslexia, which makes it hard for him to learn, and he never really hurts anyone in his pranks. He might not be the smartest in school, but he still has a big brain.
Let's not forget in DOAWK: Rodrick Rules, Rodrick wisely used Susan's "mom bucks" against her by buying a bunch of fake money from the board game Susan got the money from in the first place.
I think that's a really interesting moment personally. In the book, Greg ends up playing the board game the money is from with Rowley, and he ends up taking it all and stashing it under his bed. He starts exchanging it slowly to not arouse suspicion, but when Rodrick ends up finding the money, he takes it all and tries to trade it all at once, which Susan immediately recognises as impossible. I think that shows just how little Rodrick thinks of his parents. He truly believes that his mother is dumb enough to give him a thousand dollars for his counterfeit Mom Bucks.
That was Greg, but he did lend rodrick some, and he used them all at once even though his mom hadn't given out that many at all. He's smart, but this isn't an example. More so, the opposite. He's the reason they got caught
@@kastov74u Honestly it wasn’t too much of a good plan and Rodrick did the morally right thing. Rodrick knew that the Mom Bucks situation was flawed if she could just pay them in fake money instead of having a normal allowance, leaving room for her to actually scam her own children out of money + a system where Greg or even Manny could just get fake money and ruin the system furthermore Cashing them all in at once busted a flawed system and made sure no one would be spoiled. If it didn’t work, they’d go back to normal money. If it did, he got a free payout. Rodrick COULD have just been dumb, but I like to interpret it as “this is not how the economy works mom”
@@CinnPai you're overthinking it, lmao, imo. Sure you can interpret it like that, and that's the magic of this diary of a wimpy kid stuff. Theres no clear perspective of what happens so we can make headcanons
I actually think he's the most talented out of all of them, at one point in The Last Straw (at least i think that was that book) Greg describes how teenagers would gather outside the house to listen to Rodricks band practice, so yeah Rodricks target audience clearly likes his music lol. Also i think him spelling lots of things badly and generally doing dumb things are more just him not caring, he has used that to get Frank to do his work for him before.
Rodrick found something he has genuine passion and skill in, which is great and should be supported. However, Frank sees this as "uncool" or too rebellious, so he doesn't support it, which is very unhealthy.
I mean come on, Rodrick is a real smart character. Like he plays drums in a band, knows how to get out of trouble and just always manages to beat the system.
Also Rodrick was not even a trouble maker. Dude could have been out there doing drugs but all he ever did was slightly inconvenience his parents and brother sometimes but because his parents and brother act so dramatically over trivial things you would think he was worse than he actually was.

"He even offered to go to church pantless, so Greg wouldn't have to wear stained pants" He's literally kinder to Greg than *any* of his other family members.

@@artmoryoo It costed Greg Mom-Bucks, as I recall. Not entirely something nice, plus he upped his price when Greg changed his mind after denying the offer at first.
Also, in later books, which I know less people will have read, Rodrick grows out of tormenting Greg; he doesn't even prank him anymore. He's just trying to get on with his life now, and honestly has a very normal relationship with Greg. Rodrick was just a teenager in a dysfunctional family doing things teenagers do, and eventually grew out of it.
At least it means that their's hope for rodrick it's just sad and heartbreacking that the same thing CANNOT (probably) be said for his two younger brothers ESPECIALLY MANNY ☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
It should be remembered that, regardless of how Rodrick acts, he's still a child. As such, his behavior is mostly determined by how his parents have treated and cared for him. If he should be doing his own essays, his parents should put their foot down and stop doing them for him. It's THEIR fault for not setting clear rules and boundaries, and punishing Rodrick if he crosses them. I guarantee that if Frank had refused to do Rodrick's essays from the beginning, Rodrick would've sucked it up and written it himself after _maybe_ the first few tries, if that.
I agree. If proper boundaries were set and if Frank and Susan were actual competent parents, all of their kids would be decently well behaved and well adjusted people.
This can be said about all humans. All anyone is is an expression of genetics interacting with environment. I believe the world is wholly deterministic but even if it isn’t, humans at the very least still don’t control their outcomes. They don’t choose their genetics, their parents, where or how their raised. All we see are the consequences of factors humans had no choice in.
Greg: Sociopath Manny: Psychopath(and maybe sadistic) Susan: Karen Frank: Not a good father Rodrick: Not a model citizen, but he’s the best one in the whole screwed-up family.
How is a middle schooler a sociopath? you need a professional to diagnose him on that before jumping to conclusions. a sociopath NEVER shows care or any human emotion. EVER. Greg has been capable of that. he’s just a selfish kid, but most of us were when we were his age.
Have you read the books? Roddick outright stole Greg's money by telling him that it'll grow into a tree and Greg would Rick roll Chirag Gupta and be suspended.
I remember in the do it yourself book, rodrick made a maze that cannot be solved. But I fell for this maze, and so did a bunch of other kids I knew, so he’s smart enough to no only draw a maze. But also draw it in a way that you can’t tell it’s unsolvable at first. Seriously I think rodrick’s way smarter than Greg gives him credit for.
all you got to do is draw your line around the maze and connect it to the otherside. talk about thinking outside of the box. (i also had the do it your self book glad to know somebody else does aswell)

I wouldnt exactly call him "normal" yet. Most of his interactions have been manipulative to some degree. A theory I have is that he used to be almost just like Greg. He just learned how to get by in life better.
Yeah, your theory is actually supported by the books. Greg was exited that Manny was born because he thought that all the bad things Rodrick did to him that Greg would do to Manny. We all know how that turned out.
I'd argue that while yes it is manipulative it isn't 'bad' or unusual. Manipulative isn't always bad, if it was your high school persuasive piece would be considered 'bad' as you tend to use slightly manipulative tactics while persuading someone. I'm not excusing manipulation of course, however you can manipulate someone lightly without it being toxic or bad. The main factor of this is how frequent and how severe it is. Gaslighting someone to make them question their own memories or pressuring someone into something they don't want to do is bad Playing dumb to make your dad who doesn't pay attention to you or care to help you with your assignment isn't bad.

I think we can all agree, that Rodrick despite being a bully, is at least a great friend to the members of his band, unlike his younger brother to his own friends
It can be traced to rodrick as why Greg treats rowley like that since your relationship with your siblings defines how you treat your peers. If anything this just makes it less forgivable for rodrick to treat Greg like that when he’s clearly showcased he can treat his friends with dignity. Rodrick is just a bully and when ppl are bullied they look to somehow lower to punch down on and that’s exactly what Greg does to rowley.

I feel like Greg isn’t a sociopath, but very obsessed with being popular. That’s his whole goal of middle school. Being the most popular and becoming famous. However, the ways he tries to become popular don’t work out so well. He also often neglects his best friend on his thirst for popularity, making him a terrible friend. I feel like Rodrick HAS absorbed some of his family's manipulative tendencies, but for the most part, he isn't doing anything out of the ordinary for a typical teenager in a children's book. Most teenagers in books are mean bullies who break the rules and are defiant. I can only hope he wises up to the fact that his entire family is a toxic nightmare and he moves away, cuts contact, and becomes a rockstar. Also, who the hell names their kid "Rodrick?" I had literally never heard of that name before up until I read the books, I have never heard it since, and I do not know of anyone who actually has that name in real life. I honestly thought it was made up for the books.
Rodrick is a very interesting name it is an actual name that exists in real life but there's not too many people who are named Rodrick... Even if we look at the "bad" stuff Rodrick did, we have to consider the fact that he's the most neglected by his parents. So of course he'd be doing all those pranks, or "bullying".
No amount of neglect justifies forcing his younger brother to ride in the back of his van without a seatbelt AND going out of his way to find speed bumps to run over to hurt him and make him scream.
@@regularguy2807 Greg is only mean because of rodrick since he learned all the pranks off him. But the fact that everyone else in the family are mean for no reason makes them way worse than greg, am i right?
Honestly Roderick resembles lots of people with younger siblings. He genuinly doesnt (physically) harm Greg. And he isnt necesarilly manipulative in an evil way. Obviously everyone cheats or breaks rules. But he tricks people vs manipulates. He causes temporary consequence for Greg, unlike his familly who quite literally break peoples arm's and neglect their children. He isnt the best most civilized child. rodrick is literally just what happens when a real teenager realizes they have a shitty home life and can finesse their parents to make things better for themselves - the person i just described
Here’s my list of the Heffely’s from normal to the least normal. 1. Rodrick (literally just a normal teen trying to make the best of a bad situation) 2. Susan (She’s a controlling person who thinks she can just boss around everyone and clearly has favorites.) 5. Manny (Manny is a literal manipulative psychopath who clearly needs some type of mental help.)
Or Manny could also just be overly spoiled by his parents to the point where he has developed psychopathic traits. Just my guess. Could be wrong. Also I fear what Manny would become in the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Manny gets locked up in jail when he grows up due to many crimes.

Another sign he is a calculated genius is that his memory is amazing. He was able to recall an event from before he was able to talk. Even if you made the suggestion that maybe the period in which he could and could not talk isn't that far apart, the fact that he could learn language that quickly is also very impressive.

@@atanaZion Susan is a Manny's Slave

Rodrick knew that the Mom Bucks situation was flawed if she could just pay them in fake money instead of having a normal allowance, leaving room for her to actually scam her own children out of money + a system where Greg or even Manny could just get fake money and ruin the system furthermore
Cashing them all in at once busted a flawed system and made sure no one would be spoiled. If it didn’t work, they’d go back to normal money. If it did, he got a free payout.

Certainly a name that is on the rarer side tho lmao
Even if we look at the "bad" stuff Rodrick did, we have to consider the fact that he's the most neglected by his parents. So of course he'd be doing all those pranks, or "bullying".
it could also be attention seeking behavior
@@ahhh4117 Yeah that makes sense too.
Bro Greg’s entire family aside from his parents are bad.
No amount of neglect justifies forcing his younger brother to ride in the back of his van without a seatbelt AND going out of his way to find speed bumps to run over to hurt him and make him scream.
@@regularguy2807 Greg is only mean because of rodrick since he learned all the pranks off him. Honestly, his whole family is a bad role model to greg and since greg gets bullied by them, he thinks its ok to bully others. Everyone elses actions aren't justified except for greg's cus at least greg is mean for a good reason there for he's the only normal one. But the fact that everyone else in the family are mean for no reason makes them way worse than greg, am i right?
And can we just talk about how good Greg and Roderick's dynamic was in the movie, like that was so sweet...
But he acts like most older brothers honestly. Maybe even a little bit nicer.
some older brothers are compassionate since they remember the feeling of being neglected

"Roderick rules"
I at first thought that it was supposed to be the rules of living with Rodrick but now it is truly saying he rules
rodrick is literally just what happens when a real teenager realizes they have a shitty home life and can finesse their parents to make things better for themselves
- the person i just described
Here’s my list of the Heffely’s from normal to the least normal.
1. Rodrick (literally just a normal teen trying to make the best of a bad situation)
2. Greg (Sure he’s a jerk but he probably just never got proper parenting)
3. Frank (Just like Rodrick he’s just trying to make the best of a bad situation but I would say he isn’t the best dad but he could be fairly stressed out.)
4. Susan (She’s a controlling person who thinks she can just boss around everyone and clearly has favorites.)
5. Manny (Manny is a literal manipulative psychopath who clearly needs some type of mental help.)
we dont talk about the fifth

@@arcioko2142 I just realized that
Or Manny could also just be overly spoiled by his parents to the point where he has developed psychopathic traits. Just my guess. Could be wrong.
Also I fear what Manny would become in the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Manny gets locked up in jail when he grows up due to many crimes.
@@BloodEventReal again he probably never learned about treating people right and manners, since Susan was probably to focused on making Greg the next Einstein.
@@d1kgaws12 But manny is also hyper intelligent, which doesn't come from being spoiled. He is conscience and smart enough at the age of 3 to be able to understand that he can get away with doing bad things with the excuse that he is three, constantly saying , "I'm only three." Another sign he is a calculated genius is that his memory is amazing. He was able to recall an event from before he was able to talk. Even if you made the suggestion that maybe the period in which he could and could not talk isn't that far apart, the fact that he could learn language that quickly is also very impressive. Hyper intelligence is a common trait amongst psychopaths.
