That is correct sir. A buddy of mine who grew up in suburbia listening to Blink 182, Smashmouth, Sublime, etc got his first taste of Gang Starr via the Dave Mirra Bike games on PS2. I brought Moment of Truth on a car ride and he went to get the album that same week. I think Moment of Truth and Return to the 36 Chambers are his only hip hop albums in his catalog of rock.
This is the one that converted me onto hiphop, buddy in community college had it in his car's rotation. Once Above the Clouds hit is was over. Never looked back.
Definitely one of the greatest Hip Hop tracks of All-time‼️ Being from the south and hearing the track with Guru's masterful flow along with K-Ci and Jo Jo on the hook was crazy!! Me and my twin brother jam this record everytime we link up! Gangstarr is Hip Hop "ROYALTY"‼️👊🏿💪🏿💯🔥🔥 #RIPGURU 🤞🏿💪🏿🙏🏿
I love this album and they used every minute possible on a 80 minute cd. This album would have been a stone cold classic with just Royalty and Above the Clouds but there is so much more. We like roaches.
One of the greatest songs of all time. Thought DJ Premier was gonna spill the sample but the story of how the song and the music video came together is waaay better. Love that shit.
Same. It's between Moment of Truth and Livin' Proof as far as entirely produced Dj Premier albums. Hard To Earn and Jeru's Wrath of The Math are honorable mentions.
I am telling you i was in the mist of a 9 year depression, this moment of truth album was all i ever played, especially the title track. Thank you.. Thank you ... Thank you soooo much for this classic. RIP Guru!
Man, I just want to sit in this nice small and cozy bar at a table drinking beers where they play just the best hiphop, and then Preemo comes comes along and sits across the table from me and just start talking all these crazies stories. That would really be a dream come true man.
I was a Patriots fan in boot camp at Great Lakes when NE lost to GB. I. Was. Heated. As. Sh!t when they lost. Damn near swung on my drill instructor when he was yelling at me because of that. Plus he was a packers fan. I was stationed down south when No Limit and cash money started to pop off. I remember walking thru a mall one day and happened to stop in Sam Goody(remember them?) and stopped in the hip hop sectioned. Glancing over the CD’s, I noticed something that said gang Starr. Thinking it was some mixed album or something I took a closer look and realized it was “moment of truth”. I was like “WHAT? When did they drop an album?” Without even hearing one song, I copped it(literally one minute after I first saw it), took it back to the barracks, and blasted it on repeat from front to end all day. This album and Wu tang forever saved my sanity from all that down south sh!t they were playing. No disrespect.
Brother said Respectfully, I'm not feeling your dirty South $hit. GANGSTAR HAS GOT TO BE THE SURE SHOT. Sidebar MTA is one of the largest agencies and highest percentage of black employees in NYC. You had a GANGSTAR fan angel pulling strings in the MTA. Soo dope.
Moment Of Truth is my favorite Gang Starr album and Royalty is in my top 10 favorite Preemo tracks. I was never happier to see an album go gold than Moment Of Truth...
Rakim' s "The 18th Letter" and this Gang Starr Album are my favourite albums of all time. This was Premo in his prime! Best Gang Starr Album in their discography, imho.
That's my favourite gangstarr tune. Moment of truth what an album?! Bought the album in summer 98 I loved everything about the album and I loved the cover so much. Big love from Morocco . Gang starr has gots to be the sure shot!!!!! No matter what we face We must face the moment of truth, baby. Rip Guru.
I remember the first time I heard this track. It worried me at the time because most hip hop artists trying to do mainstream don't make it. GANG STARR pulled it off with this track. K-CI and JoJo doing the vocals of the hook was just icing on the cake
Everything about this is beautiful. One of my favorite Gang Starr tracks....If you've never just taken the time to zone out to this on repeat, do yourself that favor 💯💯💯
I found my CD of Moment of truth today as I was clearing my room out. Seminal album, I always had the inlay photo at the front of the case as I felt it represented best. So many great times and memories for this album. RIP Guru and salute to Gangstarr
One of my favorites, shit still goes hard. I think I remember Premier saying they had an extended version with KC and JoJo doing a bunch of ad libs and shit. I would love to hear that!
That makes me know that, we we we we're doin We had the right idea in the beginning And and we just need to maintain our focus, and elevate We what we do we update our formulas We have certain formulas but we update em (oh right) with the times, and everything y'know And and so.. y'know The rhyme style is elevated The style of beats is elevated but it's still Guru and Premier And it's always a message involved
great episode! one of my favorite Gang Starr records, period. Loved the insight into shooting the video. Always puts a smile on my face to see Treach and Keith in the beginning. That's brotherly love right there
I bought Daily operation on cassette in 92. At first I wasn't feeling it, but over time it became one of my favorite albums. I found this album only in the last 5-10 years and it is a beauty! So many classics. What Im here for New York Stait talk Rep Grows bigger Royalty People say Im sorta the boss so get lost!
Great story Premo, I’ve been rocking with GangStarr since I was a kid in nyc and heard “the words I manifest”. Between that and Royalty are 2 of my favorite tracks.
Premo can continue this series for another 27 years and not finish his catalog.
Exactly
No lies told 💯
FUCK YEAH!!!!
Agree
Well let’s do the math, If he does one episode a week… lol
I respect how premier always gives everyone their props. Not just rappers but artists that have been sampled, producers, engineers, beat makers, etc.
Real recognise real!
Primo seems like a good man!
A true student and fan of the ENTIRE creative process: Dj Premier.
@def creator They Also get their props
@def creator That dude in one episode gave a shout out to some dude who was in the waiting room of the studio. Salute!
Kids today don't understand hip hop is a feeling through your whole body when you hear genuine classic hip hop. It's not a trend it's forever.
This entire album is on another level. It's the type of hip hop that you could show to a non hip hop fan and they would probably love it

"Adult stars know how to shoot, too."
...was that... a triple entendre?!? Preem with the bars. lol
Might be the best album of all time
Premier's memory is on another level. I hope we'll see atleast 100 episodes of this. My favorite thing on youtube.
Gang starr has gots to be the sure shot!
One of the meanest and the cleanest.
The man’s memory is impeccable. Greatest hip hop producer ever.
My cousin sent me this album in 1998. Heard ROYALTY and to this day, one of my favourite Gangstarr tracks of all time. Guru's flow; FLAWLESS!
1:50 seeing that big smile on GURU's face is priceless, RIP
I love this album and they used every minute possible on a 80 minute cd. This album would have been a stone cold classic with just Royalty and Above the Clouds but there is so much more. We like roaches.
💯
The title track was the hardest joint on that whole cd. Guru's deep ass rhymes plus that smooth melancholic beat.... Jesus
And those 2 tracks are back to back! Although I say that Moment of Truth is the best song on the album but you can’t go wrong with either
Thank you Preme for keeping Gangstarr legacy going. "Royalty"!
Jazzmatazz made my mom happy to have a hip hop head as her son. The legacy of Premier gives me life after all these years. 🙏🏾 Andre Harrell
One of the most CLASSIC bangers of the era. We had this one on repeat!
One of the most memorable tracks from one of the most memorable albums of my coming age years.
One of my favorite Gang Starr songs. Guru is so underrated his pen game was immaculate. One of the most gifted writers and iconic voices in hip hop.
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Thought DJ Premier was gonna spill the sample but the story of how the song and the music video came together is waaay better. Love that shit.
Latimore - Let's do it in slow motion

That gang Starr metro card is the freshest thing I ever seen!!
I always have said that Moment of Truth is Preemo’s best work when it comes to production.
Same. It's between Moment of Truth and Livin' Proof as far as entirely produced Dj Premier albums. Hard To Earn and Jeru's Wrath of The Math are honorable mentions.
This man has a wonderful mind. He remembers about people, friends, colleagues and gives everyone respect!
Royalty and Above the Clouds always take me back to 1998. Instantly. Those sounds.
damn, if all "radio" tracks were this hard...
"So Wassup"
An absolutely legendary retrospect.
Every time I think it can't possibly get any better, it does. 🤯
Listening to Royalty always takes me to that corny special place in my heart. RIP Guru, my friends/family and the 90's.
I know what you mean…I was 12 at the time and this record came at a pivotal point in a young man’s maturation process
I am telling you i was in the mist of a 9 year depression, this moment of truth album was all i ever played, especially the title track. Thank you.. Thank you ... Thank you soooo much for this classic. RIP Guru!

I guess that bar would sell tickets to get in, at least 500 bucks each.
Yes, I would never tire even if he told me the same story like 5 times.
Was thinking something similarly...give me the stories
Gangstarr always been platinum status since day one in my book. One of the best yet. R.I.P. GURU.
Pretty amazing that Preemo can remember all these details 30 years later. Impressive

One of my favorite albums. "Discipline" is still my current ringtone for like 4 years now.
