Guys, after some extra digging, I've finally found the solution to the gender neutral pronouns! I'll discuss with you in class! 😁
I'm learning Greek on Duo, I don't know how to ask "where is the bathroom?" I can however say "It's raining men"
If I had a dollar for every time I had to translate “Ik ben een appel.”I’d be rich it translates to “I am an apple.”
For learning Indonesian, a common sentence was: the banana sleeps 😂

I've recently picked up Dutch on Duolingo, and I've already noticed some issues- it never teaches you the difference between je and jij, for instance. I can't tell what context each is used in. It's things like that where you need a human teacher to show you the correct usage.

If you still want to know the difference I'll try explaining it.
When speaking to someone directly you can pretty much always use 'je' except if you really want to emphazise the 'you'. In that case you should use 'jij'. For example: 'Ik dacht dat jij dat zou doen'. ( I thought YOU were doing that). In pretty much any other case you can just use 'je'. For example: 'Wat heb je gedaan vandaag?' (What did you do today?). So you pretty much only ever use 'jij' when you're really emphasizing the you. I don't know what Duolingo is teaching you but using 'jij' when you're speaking to someone is not really something you do.
I forgot to add that this really can change from region to region ( from my experience they use 'jij' a lot more in Friesland and the north generally) but I'm speaking from the perspective as someone who's from the Randstad.

It’s the same in German too! The word for she and they is the same, it only changes depending on the verb

Sie means she, they, you (formal), her (accusative), them (accusative), and you (formal, accusative). The only way to tell the difference is context, verb conjugation (as you said), and if the s is capitalized (the capital s means it’s formal you).
I’ve been using on the Dutch Duolingo course for exactly a year today and i think it has really helped me to understand not only the language but the culture behind it. I’m glad there’s additional help available on it like Zoom calls so you can speak to native speakers!!

I am currently almost half way done with the Duolingo Dutch course, and I find it really helpful. I've been basically just reading a book in Dutch, watching shows and videos and doing Duolingo. I can already understand a lot, but I am still struggling with grammar, mainly word order. There are definitely a lot of flaws to Duo, but if you are consistent it will be a great tool for learning.
I am also half way through and I know way more now then before it is great at vocabulary building when my husband is speaking dutch on the phone with someone else I kinda know what they are talking about now, he was not wanting to help me learn at all so kinda the only way I can learn new words without paying money, I think it is good to get some vocabulary under your belt before spending a lot on lessons, I will have to take classes when I move to Belgium to get citazenship so trying to lower the learning curve

Duolingo is ok as a supplement, but it is hugely flawed.

I would like yo speak about my own case.
I'm form Spain and during this year I've been living in Belgium (Flanderen) for four months. During that time I have been learning Dutch, and now I've the A1 level.
Since I returned to Spain, in order not to forget the language, I've been practising Dutch with Duolingo (Dutch for english speakers, because for spanish speakers doesn't exist).
However, I also practice French for spanish speakers with Duolingo at the same time, because now I'm studing the A2 of french in Spain (Yes, I'm also studying french because of Belgium).
From my own point of view, I've to say that although Duo can be really helpfull sometimes, in its Dutch version the course contains several mistakes. For example, when you practice the plural, when you write that "vissen" is "fishes", Duo says that you are wrong and the correct answer is "fish". Same thing with "schapen", because when you say that this is "sheeps", then Duo says that the correct answer is "sheep" and not "sheeps".
Also I realised that the course of Dutch for english speakers is not as developed as the course of french for spanish speakers. Perhaps because the last course is more demanded.
I hope the mistakes can be corrected in the future, and if I return to Flanderen one day, then I will go to Dutch classes again.
The plural of sheep is sheep. You can use fish or fishes for the plural of fish.
@@mimakngs2731 Ok, but then, if both "fish" and "fishes" are correct for the plural of "fish", then, when you write "fishes" for "vissen", then Duo would to say that you're right, and that doesn't happen.
Fish is plural and fishes is never used except maybe by kids who don't know better but it must be so hard learning a 3rd language through your second language!

Hello! I've always loved Dutch. Did you know that the modern Hebrew accent is one of the closest accents to the Dutch one. Our R is like the R of Brabant, Limburg, Roterdam and Haag. Our KH is like the northern Dutch one.
Unlike Dutch we have V, SH and hard G, but we don't have rounded vowels, and we tend to stress our words on the last syllable (like French).
True, my linguistics professor in university often reminded us that although Dutch is a Germanic language, it is strongly connected to Semitic languages and much older than we think it is 😊

I'm learning both on duolingo. I started with Dutch, so I don't have trouble at all with the 'KH' in Hebrew.
I'm currently learning Dutch on Duolingo. Why is it that words ending in 'en' are only pronounced with an 'e' on Duolingo, but Dutch teaching youtubers say the 'en' fully? I've heard that Dutch speakers pronounce it like Duolingo does, in everyday life? I'm not sure though, what's the right way to do it?
Duolingo BTW doesn't explain a lot of things. I had to use Google to learn the differences between 'het' and 'de', 'zij vs ze', 'wel' vs 'ook' etc.
The correct pronunciation is 'en'. However, in casual speach the 'n' is usually not pronounced. This is not always the case though. So I always prefer for my students to learn the most correct version first, so they have a baseline and as I see them advance in the language, they'll usually develop a feeling for when to follow the rules precisely or when to be more casual. Hope this helps!

I think that when the word after "en" begins with a wovel, you pronounce n, and vice versa. Like with a and an in English
5:10 you can use "hun/hen" . Although I, as a dutchie myself, just can't get used to those words being used like that.
True, and also 'die', I've done some extra research, but even those people admitted that this is a very difficult conversation to have in the Netherlands and with Dutch people. Some of my students have tried to use 'zij' before as a translation for 'they', but that doesn't really work 😂
@@CatsDutchClasses We would really have to come with a new word for this, or multiple actually. And also stop differentiating between thins like "zanger en zangeres" etc.
@@larswillems9886 I know, as a person who is more internationally-minded, it has always really bothered me. And I often correct my Dutch friends when I feel like they could be more mindful in their language. There's a lot of ignorance on this topic.

Yes, I'm drinking water lol. It's sad to hear that it's so difficult to create and use Gender Neutral Pronouns in Dutch. But of course, I take comfort in my belief that it's inevitable that Dutch Non-Binary people and allies will find a way to express themselves and be recognised eventually, because language is modified and adapted to reflect reality. And when you were talking about how much you love Duolingo at the beginning of the video, I said 'BUT!!!' at exactly the same time and have pretty much exactly the same opinion. Because as you know, I struggled to learn languages for many years before realising that I was getting nowhere and I only have a limited amount of time on this Earth, so I could either spend 20 years banging my head against a wall, or I can spend that time listening to audiobooks, watching movies and doing other things I enjoy. But during the years that I was using Duolingo every day, I quickly learned that as you say, I wasn't actually 'Learning' how to speak, read or understand the language in real life. That instead, it was like Duolingo was a puzzle game and I was just getting better at solving the puzzles. (But as you also say though, that's great exercise for your brain, hahaha.)
So as you also, also say then, while it's a useful supplement, you should never rely on Duolingo as your sole resource for learning a language. And yeah, I'm also confused as to why so many people want to learn Dutch when almost all Dutch people speak English, lol. ^_~
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I've just done some extra digging and finally found a solution to gender neutral probouns yay! Did you try taking classes for learning the language? You can chech italki or online language schools. And yeah keep training your brain 😊

Oh interessant. In mijn ervaring hebben Duits sprekende studenten altijd het meeste moeite met de uitspraak. Maar fijn om te horen dat het makkelijk voor je is 😊

I would combine Duolingo with additional practice, such as Dutch classes or practicing with a local. Mostly because Duolingo will not teach you proper pronunciation but also, in the end, Duolingo just teaches you to solve puzzles and not actually to learn a language =)
@@CatsDutchClasses I kind of disagree with you there. I think people underestimate Duolingo because it seems like a game or "solving puzzles" as you call it (which I agree it can be). You yourself just tried out two lessons on Duolingo and gave an opinion on it which I find maybe a little too rushed. As you go further, the sentences become way more complex and, even though I agree that grammar or pronounciation learnt on Duo can't be compared to the actual course given from a native speaker, you can pick up on it if you care enough to make it more than a game. I still didn't finish my course, I'm halfway there, but I can assure you that I understand so much already and I can respond in a conversation with my Dutch boyfriend (of course only to words and expressions I already learned on it). I naturally have a talent (or how I like to say it - "an ear") for languages, and I went to a language high school. From my experience, Duolingo has taught me the language (so far) better than some professors there taught me - for example - Italian. My opinion is that it can be so much more than puzzle solving and games if you take it seriously. You won't be fluent by the end of it, you can't expect miracles, but IT CAN get you to a decent level on which you can further work on by visiting a country, moving there, talking to natives, watching TV shows, etc. Also, even the courses you pay for can never teach you a language completely and for good if you don't use it on a daily basis or at least often enough. Language speaking/learning is an ongoing process because languages are alive, they change, new words are being invented, added. Even I, as a native Croatian speaker don't know all the Croatian words or use all the rules and tenses I had to learn at school. Judging an app based on 5 minutes spent on it is like reviewing a book or a movie before you finish it. Not saying your own opinion would for sure change, but I think it is only fair that you try it for a longer period of time before you give your final word and advice to someone else on to use it or not, especially since I can see from the video you already had some kind of "attitude" (maybe based on what you heard from someone, can't say for sure) towards it and two lessons were somehow enough to confirm that pre-made opinion. I hope you don't mind the long text and a minor critic, it's nothing personal. You seem like a lovely and intelligent person. Sending greetings from Croatia! :)
Can dutch be learned in 30 days to an extent that you can understand a show without subtitles?

Depending on many factors, but probably not 😅 Dutch is very structured in grammar, but can be very messy when spoken casually, so regular TV shows would be difficult. I'd recommend watching Disney movies in Dutch instead
Dutch is something I was forced to learn at school when I was in a school, because I was on a Dutch and French island. But when I moved to America my mom said that learning Dutch wasn’t worth it because they only speak it in the neatherlands

True. Nobody speaks Dutch in any other place than Holland and Belgium. Even in Germany they only speak a very basic amount of dutch in the border towns

About the gendered words, isn't Het for non gendered? like for example "Ik ben drinken het sap" and for de it is "Dat is de jongen" ??
Good question. Those are articles and they don't attach gender to the noun. De is technically male and female and het is neutral, but it doesn't say anything about the person or thing you're talking about. Also, it's de sap 😉
@@CatsDutchClassesHet appelsap is juist als het om het sap zélf gaat: de stofnaam. De appelsap is daarnaast mogelijk als het bijvoorbeeld om appelsap in een pak (of een andere verpakking) gaat. Dit geldt ook voor andere sap-woorden.

Back to Duolingo. I have been using it for quite a time now. Started with Spanish.
Recently started with Dutch now. It's such a funny language. How it sounds the links to German and English. I love it.
As you've probably noted by now, I am a native speaker of German. So probably the pronunciation isn't the biggest deal for me. Would love to hear from you.
