  • Here is how to disable the hill assist on a Subaru. I am doing this on a 2018 Subaru WRX STI. Its pretty simple to turn it off. The reason I find the hill assist so annoying is because it grabs the brakes a bit to much at times and at the same time takes away more of the rally race car feel of the car. I like the responsiveness of having the hill assist disabled.

You solved the problem with my 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT.. Disconnected battery for 10 mins, turned off Hill-start assist as shown, and problem went away 100%.
    THANK-YOU!!!

Thank you! I can't stand the hill assist. It's caused me to stall on hills a couple of times.

Thank you so much!!! This was driving me crazy!! I just bought a 2018 Standard Impreza (not wrx/sti). It worked a little different. Had to hold down the traction control button for about 45 seconds. It took me a couple tries but got it working. Thanks!!

I have an STI for over a year now and didn’t even know how to activate that. Thanks

According to the paperwork I got from the dealership, this is the procedure for a 2014 Subaru Impreza WRX as well. I can't seem to get it to work though.

Wouldn’t the light mean it’s on . Like when you have low tire pressure the light goes on

One would think, but that is not the case.

Personally hate this feature andI feel the same way. Feels like it holds the brakes way too long and throws me off every time

Turning this off will probably save your clutch! (If you know how to drive😂🎉) but with that feature on I can see how people burn them up! 😂 bought my 2019 used with 900 miles. Fought hill assist one week and took it to the dealer an had them turn it off...

Your video showing the car rolling back , can show car hold by the assist?

I hate the hill holder feature, and was hopeful when I saw this video. Unfortunately the owners manual for my 2013 WRX is apparently correct when it says it can only be disabled on STI models.

I didn’t realize it was only for the STI models:( Guess this means you got to upgrade to an STI now ;)

Does not seem to work for my 2009 Forester Manual transmissions. The hillside assist is on all the time and won't go off

Wish you lived near me, I watched your video of installing those stars but it looked like it took a while. My 1 year old daughter would love that feature when she's in my car😁

It does take a really long time but I Believe its worth it :) Rolls Royce charges upwards of $10,000 to get this feature but you can do it at your home for under $300 with a little time and patience :)

I did this about eight years ago and it remained disabled but now I’m receiving messages that I need to check my hill assist. Then I received a message that the ABS needs to be checked?? Ugh…. I’m going to turn it back on tomorrow then try disabling it again……

I didn't know my 6peed had hill start assist by default so the first time I was on a hill I thought something was broken lol. after 25 years of driving manual without any of that nonsense it was a shock to deal with lol. about the only time I could think of it being useful would be driving someplace like SF where there are massive hills but also idiots that ride your bumper ridiculously. Otherwise no thanks or just use the E brake method.

I’m glad we have the ability to turn it on/off depending on the circumstances. But man would I not like this car if that was not an option hahah.

I just prefer to be in full control of my car and not have it hold my breaks for me on hills and stuff. I feel the car is smoother to drive this way.

@@NFLbtsI'm in my late 30s and have always had manual transmission, since my first car. I actually love this feature, but I live in a hilly area like San Francisco.
