I'm (poke)balls deep in Pokemon Violet this week and despite everyone's initial criticism of the game, it's just a fact that Pokemon music just doesn't miss, and Scarlet / Violet is no exception. There's a lot I want to cover from this gen, but this for me was such a standout track.
Something I do that's probably very weird to some, is I really like listening to a game's soundtrack before playing it. I love to hear the music first so that when a song I really liked in the initial listen comes on, I'm extra hyped. It's a feeling that's really hard to top doing it the other way around. I was working on some super secret upcoming project this past week while waiting for the game to drop and this song came on and stuck to my brain like Brock on a red-blooded human female.
I tuned down to Drop G on the 7-string for this one, but really tried to match the octaves of the melody as best as I could. It took some interesting bends to hit some of the high Fs and F#s and sometimes I admit it was sounding like a dog whistle at times, but I think it really helped the melody stand out from everything else going on. I used a bunch of synths and electric drums in conjunction with my usual instruments, so it was really hard to get a clear mix on this one.

Sorry if this was a spoiler that you fight Penny. When you get to this part of the game if you haven't already, I think you'll still be surprised. I wanted to do something earlier on in the game first, but I just couldn't convince myself I wanted to do any other song first. Hope you still enjoy!

On one hand Penny was high profile in the trailers, so you fighting here isnt a spoiler on its own.
The theme itself doesnt fit what we know about her... before the reveal.
Another option is to name it "Team Star Boss Theme" if need be.
Had a feeling you would. Made sense plot wise that she was more important than the game let's on initially

My young son started Violet, his first real Pokémon game, and he immediately wanted an Eeveelution team. I got to this fight ahead of him, and made sure his team was better. Seeing his eyes light up fighting Penny with his own will always live with me.

@DylanVsTheWorld she was pretty annoying for me since i had a team of 5 physical attackers with the special attacker being fairy/psychic so it was quite hard to deal with her spamming baby-doll eyes and her sylveon with cute charm.

I like to imagine that during this fight, Giacomo is off to the side blasting the music on a boombox and Penny assumes she's just imagining it because of the intensity of the moment.

@@elkks4491 He didn't compose them alone? He worked on the tracks as part of the main composition team like everyone else. This wasn't a SwSh situation where he was given one guest song to do on his own while the composition team did everything else. He was literally not a one man army my guy.

This fight in-game is one that no matter if you see every part of it coming, it still hits emotionally. And this song has EVERY part of Penny's character in it; her originating from Galar, her resolve to end Team Star's actions, but still holding the ideals of Team Star close to her.

@@blu6295 Yup -- pretty big spoilers if you haven't played this far, obviously, but after the big incident a year-and-a-half before the game's story, with Team Star bringing the Starmobiles to the Academy to stand up for themselves (and a lot of the bully kids ended up leaving the Academy and most of the staff quit), Penny took the fall for the other Team Star members and said it was all her idea, and it was mentioned that was sent back to her home region of Galar for a time.
I will always love how you can hear a part of Galar's motif in this song, which makes sense because she is canonically Galarian
Well, she's Paldean and moved to Galar for a year and a half, so not really. Edit: Okay, totally didn't know she was originally from Galar, so fair. Damn, imagine going through the effort of moving to another region for a better education and essentially being forced to move back home over just rumors.
@@OtakuD50 They weren't rumors, Penny along with the other five gym leaders put together Team Star to take revenge on the bullies at the academy. It is a very deep plot with the history of the group since it not only shows a situation in which the victims became victimizers and the corruption of the the former board of directors of the academy when trying to hide the scandal.
I love this track because it feels distinct from anything the franchise has produced before but it has familiar elements you might see in a Pokemon soundtrack. Feels like what they were trying to do with Wally's battle theme, but executed well this time.
Edit: Just realized how much this sounds like the Galar gym theme in places. Fitting since she's from Galar

This whole game has themes that scream... yes, battles should be OP. Unique and OP to enhance the feel as the battle goes on. I'm so glad I haven't grinded in this game. Most battles were hard AF, so I had to listen to these masterpieces and struggle lol
I’ve only beat two of the Team Star bosses so I haven’t had a chance to battle Penny yet, but if her theme is this cool I’m gonna be so hyped when it’s time.

Holy freaking cow, bud! How I missed this earlier, I'll never know. But this is one of the best things I've heard in a long while. Loved this theme in the game, and I am just impressed with this cover.
The pace you manage to keep in the song just highlights what Penny must've been feeling in a battle like this. I especially love the way you changed the chorus in the second part with the outro, really like seeing your own spin on this stuff.

I fully agree with you in the description about wanting to hear the music in-game first; it's much more of a hype moment when you hear a catchy beat come in alongside a big moment.
I've also enjoyed music a lot more once I've played the game they're from as I can appreciate them more that way; I usually find myself bouncing off music from games I haven't played, whereas the ones I have played usually stick around even if they aren't in my usual taste because I have that tie to them through the gameplay.
