The Tumultuous History of Torchwood: PvZ's Most Changed Plant
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- Plants vs. Zombies is now 15 years old. It's no surprise that some plants have undergone massive changes and iterations throughout the course of the franchise. Whether it be changes to the plant itself, or changes to the games around it, such a plant may find its utility fluctuate drastically over time.
One such plant has been a recurring figure since the very beginning in 2009 who, despite all odds, rose from a controversial past flooded with changes and alterations, to become one of the best plants in Plants vs. Zombies 2. This plant is none other than Torchwood. But how has Torchwood fluctuated so much throughout the course of Plants vs. Zombies 1 and 2? Well, let’s chronologically dissect the tumultuous history of Torchwood.

Let me know if you guys liked this style of video, its definitely a bit different from what I normally do. What plant would you want to see the history of next if I make another video like this? (Or even make it a series...)
I should also mention I would only cover the tower defense games, like in this video
I love your channel
I really liked the new structure, I think it has a lot of rewatchability and was very enjoyable.
Isn’t ice Shroom the most changed plant?
I think Doom shroom might be a good one
Oil up Koala
No matter its history, i wont forget the memories i had with it and threepeater.
same
💀 😏
Agree.
PACK YOUR THINGS PARTNER ITS BURNIN TIME
@@user-lv2md3em9k bruh 💀
threepeater lostits old heads:(
You're undermining Torchwood's usefulness in non-endless survival. Gatling Pea + Torchwood is a pretty easy way of beating Survival Hard and you can even use Split Pea in those setups to defend the backline better.
True that. It's also useful in adventure 2 where you have it already unlocked, and it's pretty good in some of the minigames.
Also hello mask!
ohmagah its the man himself
Yoooo
IT IS HIM
THE LEGEND IS BACK
not to mention Adventure Mode 2
Still I prefer star fruit for it. Hate how weak it is in 2
About snapdragon at 8:22
Snapdragon was only given the ability to thaw out plants in a recent update. Version 9.1.1 to be exact.
Wow so Torchwood was even more special then
@@koalapvzyup
We still had pepper pult but yeah
Wasn't pepper pult designed to be the main plant thaw-er or smth in frostbite caves
@@thehansboi I think so but that didn’t really go as well due to pepper pults dumb recharge
5:33 THAT HEADPHONE WARNING WAS NOT ENOUGH OF A WARNING
yeah, my ears actually still hurt even after the vid ended
i jumped even after the warning
I wasn't paying attention and didn't even see the warning......my earphones were on almost full volume......
@@iamterrible253rip
Where's the loud part?
Fun Fact: The ability to hurt zombies while being eaten was actually an ability that Torchwood had in the December 2nd 2008 prototype of PvZ1, albeit it was removed from the final game for whatever reason.
"Why is it when something happens, it's always you three???"
(Torchwood, MGP, Peavine)
Lol
At this Point I finally unterstand that the new Pop Cap actually does care for balancinc.
Edit: A history of the Snow Pea would be nice: From a mid Plant to a broken plant
Now they just need to save chomper
@@Navman_ Imo Theres no rescue for the Chomper. But I actually for a new Plant Food Concept: what if he could poison every Zombie in a 3x3 area After his plant food by farting? That poison damage would be able to kill every Basic Zombie and Some Special Zombies Like parasol oder jester. Its counters would be every Zombie With the bully Build ( Rockpuncher, Arcade Zombies etc.) Gargs and Zombies who Counter poison.
Snow pea was never mid
Well, maybe in 2, I haven't played it in a while
It's an amazing plant in PvZ1 though.
@@spooklass3588 Yeah your Right but I only meant PvZ 2
@@Guardian13106 Ah, fair enough
Fun fact: In PVZ 1, Winter Melon's intended AOE is 3x1, but is seemingly 3x3 when zombies are clumped up. But it the end it looks more like 3x1.5 or 3x2, so it still has SOME value chilling zombies alongside torchwood setups.
One big balance change between 1 and 2 not mentioned is that in 1, fire peas did splash damage. If you had 10 zombies cramped in a single tiles all 10 zombies would get damaged (the main zombie to get hit got more damage and surrounding ones less but in waves it made a huge difference). In PvZ2 this was removed which made it easy to overwhelm with swarm.
To be exact: fire peas do 40 dmg, and the splash is 20 dmg in a 1*1 area behind the main target, the same as a regular pea. The splash is cancelled if it hits metal (door, ladder or zomboni).
he did mention the splash damage in pvz1, just didn't mention its removal.
Yeah this. All torchwood needed was the splash damage back, but instead pop cap gave it every other buff ASIDE from that lol
0:45 I thought it's roots were in the ground
i love analysis videos like these, and one on Torchwood’s history just *had* to be a good watch. great work!!
hey look its the guy who beat pvz2 with only pvz1 plants
Hi there OriginalAlex
8;19 YOU ARE WRONG, snap dragon did not have the warming mechanic at that time, it was only recently
Koala is a fraud confirmed
Plantern: Somehow a bioluminescent plant. Can clear fog.
Torchwood: A fucking flaming stump. Can't clear fog.
Plantern eats darkness. I guess the fog counts as darkness.
Idk the pc but in mobile torchwood can clear fog, I mean it’s small asf not even 3x3
@@greeddydude It was mentioned in the video.
according to the almanac:
plantern defies science it eats darkness and spits out light which clears fog
I knew i wasnt crazy about the memory level
Another masterpiece, well done! I personally liked the video style and would like to see more of these types of videos.
i like this style of video you should make this into a series
8:17 Pretty sure you're thinking of Fire Pea, not Snapdragon. If I remember correctly, Snapdragon only gained that ability a few years ago
Edit: oops
I love these types of videos and would love to see more, you also significantly went up in quality my friend keep it up!
Also I think Chomper could be a fun next one.😊
5:31 what happened to that earphone warning
12:34 this clip is crazy
6:05 i love it when i give my plant food a torchwood
What if EA didn't bought PopCap out before creating and finalizing Plants versus Zombies 2 back then?
Keep up the great work I love your videos
7:24 Yeah, screendoors were like jesters in PVZ Brutal Mode EX+.
PVZ Unnamed*
Goddamn. I love when koala om uploads. Especially this video even for being a shake up of his normal formula is a really good video in my opinion. I genuinely think in terms of quality no npc comment here. But i genuinely get happier when he uploads and think hes one of the best pvz2 youtubers. Especially since people are mosy obsessed with pvz1 vids so its nice to see someone differ.
Great video! Just as an FYI;
Certain zombies like excavator and jester do indeed counter appease mint strategies, but you can bring in other plants to counter these zombies. In particular, draftodil can stun jesters while they are spinning, allowing you to attack them. Of course, there are other plants you could use to just kill them before they would start reflecting projectiles
This needs to be a series
"You've changed."
We're supposed to.
You forgot adventure 2 in pvz1 letting you replay the adventure mode with torchwood from the start giving you a lot more uses for him
I think that a good plant to cover next could be the hypno shroom, if you haven’t already.
Good video as always
There are reliable torchwood strategies for survival endless. You don't NEED the classic cob cannon strategy for it.
I was expecting Plants vs Zombies Heroes to be mentioned.
I’m currently doing Penny’s Pursuit to get my recently unlocked Gumnut up to lv5, and I was thinking about how cool it is that peavine made the peas + Torchwood combo arguably the best in the game, just like in PvZ 1. I think that’s so cool.
It'd be cool to get a ice version of the torch wood, since there aren't that many ice plants , and the ones we do have are hard to get. Like a pine tree covered in snow that spins when projectiles pass through it, and call it "everfrost," from evergreen and permafrost.
as a pvz hero zombie player you completely forgot how unfair torchwood is in pvz heroes
Against Captain Combustible....
You're NEVER safe...
yeah captain combustible and the card itself is SOOO unbalanced, gatling pea and torchwood is 8 damage with DOUBLE STRIKE for 8 sun, you can do that on turn 8. if its a chompzilla, combine that with the sun production and you could do gatling pea and torchwood on turn 5. and dont even get me started with captain combustible. people absolutely SPAM black-eyed peas making it impossible to play tricks (and im a professor brainstorm player so tricks are really effective for me), along with peashooter spam. that's only his mega-grow side. his kabloom side is just so unbalanced. poison oak, 6 sun, 4 strength, 5 health, and you wanna know one of the worst parts about poison oak? oh he has anti-hero FIVE, now usually for me, around turn 6 to late game, i run out of cards more often. so whenever i can only fill like 3 lanes, they put this down in the empty lane to deal NINE damage to my hero for SIX sun.. SIX?!?! but lets take a step back a bit, because what if you combine that with the 6 cost plant that damages the zombie hero for half their health. HALF. then they play a poison oak next turn and you can't do anything. then we've got cherry bomb, another 6 cost plant, except hes a trick that deals 4 damage, but its only in that lane right? wrong. ITS IN THE LANES BESIDE THE LANE IT WAS PLACED IN TOO. SPLASH DAMAGE EXISTS FOR A 4 DAMAGE TRICK?? and finally kernel corn, which might be one of the only balanced plant cards in the game, oh but there's two things about kernel corn, 8 cost plant, 6 strength, 6 health, but deals 4 damage to every zombie on the board. im just sick of how unbalanced this game is, whenever you're a zombie and you play something like a gargantuar and have this huge army, it just gets absolutely destroyed by the unbalanced plant cards. its like you almost have to pay for better zombie cards. and i dont wanna hear anyone replying with "zombies whine to much" "get good at the game" its not whining, its facts. get good at the game when you're playing unbalanced cards is crazy. oh speaking of that, im not gonna talk about him but my most hated plant in the game. MIRROR NUT. and yeah i spent like 30 minutes typing this whole thing out giving my opinions on a lot of unbalanced plant stuff in pvz heroes. thats about it.
CC has some cool stuff but the torchwood card is just okay
Just wanted to add that you forgot to mention a really important nerf to torchwood in pvz2.
It does not have splash damage, that would make it completely OP in Modern PVZ2 but it also makes it unviable for the endless modes there since the Zombies scale and you need Plants like Pokra or Winter Melon that have splash damage.
4:13 "AMAIZING I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOOOVE IT" -little timmy
Was i the only one who saw the PvZ1 torthwood looking at the plants like he smoked some good stuff.
Can we give a moment of silence for the mummy memory match levels. Those were some of the greatest levels in history.
no one is gonna mention how this is probably one of the only people in multiple years to say “tumultuous”. could have used ANYTHING else, but this man opened a dictionary and read all 800 page, word for word, to use this creature of a term on a title.
This reminds me, shoutout to the one guy who used the word apotheosis in the comments of some page on the PvZ wiki
Oh...
So THAT's where the mummy memory levels went...
They’re still in the Chinese version I’m pretty sure
Good video, good plant!
8:30 Bro I Dont Even Remember How Many Ads To Get Gems I Watched Only To Go To School And Brag To Everyone That I Had Fire Pea 😂.I Literally Used A Fire Pea Set Up Even If It Was So Bad In The Situations It Was Only In Neon Mix Tape Tour That I A Non Fire Pea Set Up Because Of The Rock And Roll Zombie 😅
lmao “OP-ness” I saw that
"most changed plant"
literally the plant: uhh pea go burn lol
the change: H O T D A T E W I T H O U D A T I N G
oh~ torchwood, they would never make me hate you
Today i learned the sprite in pvz1 has two eyes. I always thought it had one eye and just looked chill asf
I would also like to mention that Torchwood makes an amazing zomboss shield, if you plant one before your offense (even if it isn't peas) when he runs into the Torchwood it does in animation which stops zombossboss immediately
Untill a few days ago i thought torchwood only had the right eye
Funny how Torchwood became such an overpowered plant in both the tower defense games and Garden Warfare Two.
Could you do a history video on the entire history of PVZ2? Please!! With all the mechanic changes.
I remember watching pvz animations when I was a kid
My best trio plants was reinforce-mint, pea-nut, and torchwood. This is also a total carnage when you want to end a level so quickly 😂
I'm glad somebody else agrees that the torchwood Jalapeneo attack is overkill and overtuned. Then again, you could argue that a lot of modern PVZ2 is just "here's an even more broken plant to take over the meta" every update, but the health increase and small melee attack at least makes sense for torchwood and is reasonable, you know? It felt like a step in the right direction, and then they made torchwood basically better guacadile and made snow pea more broken for kicks. It's just a really strange update I guess...
I just learned that torchwood in pvz1 can help to see through fog
I don’t know what happened to Torchwood’s splash damage in PVZ 2. In PVZ 1, when peas go through Torchwood’s flame, it can also cause damage in a lane if there are zombies near the target. Why doesn’t it have splash damage just like PVZ 1?
I remember one time during an arena season there was the frostbite caves zombot and I came up with the best idea ever, I put three torchwoods In the middle three lanes 1 mega gating pea for each, 1 fire pea in between them and the next plant to thaw them, and I think I put repeaters at the back and at the start of the level I would plant food the torchwoods and let everything else go to town on zomboss . Since lawnmowers regenerate in arena I didn't care about the outer 2 lanes because dealing damage to zomboss gave you the most points. I think I won every arena match that I used that strat.
Very cool!
This is a pet peeve of mine regarding torchwood in PvZ2 (and you somehow omitted it), that torchwood being premium plant felt so wrong was because that it was nerfed in 2. To be more specific, it was the splash ability (that you metioned) in PvZ1 that got removed in PvZ2, which made it purely a x2dmg multiplier for pea plants. I’d say giving pea shooters the ability to deal splash damage on top of the x2dmg is the reason why it is as good as it is in PvZ1, removing it is removing half of torchwood potential in PvZ2. Also, you did say that torchwood was perhaps weak against chicken wrangler, and well, I think maybe it wouldn’t be weak against that kind of zombie if torchwood also retains its splash ability.
i wish they made gatling pea an adventure plant and a balanced plant it was so fun to use in the first game
it'd be pretty sick if you went over homing thistle! (if you haven't already)
Ice shroom in pvz2 be like:
*hold my iced beer*
8:20 nah, if I remember right, snapdragon couldn’t thaw on release of frostbite caves
I really love your commentary....
I like PVZ2's torch wood.
You can just get it after a week of calendar prizes and it's like an Endurian Jalapeno.
You forgot to mention they removed the splash damage in pvz 2
Torchwood is a sinergy plant, which imo its extremely interesting because on these last days its getting more rare to see this things, and its a shame, because it helps to introduce other plants more smoothly and adds complexity to a game without needing a plant that has 3 secondary abilities.
Edit: A shame that It got buffed because acording to Modern PopCap a plant can't be good without having an only specific ability...
Which is ironic considering that Torchwood has 2 secondary abilities
@@fedethegreat88 I like the plant, not his buffs. Thats why I use It in mods and not in Vanilla
In fact Im gonna edit the original comment now that you mention It.
It got buffed cause it sucked. Though after Pea Vine was introduced, it might not have needed the buff anymore.
Pepi, diet pepi, blue berry (single one), *plant*, kit-kat
From what i hear its getting nerfed in the next update, theyre reducing the damage of fire peas to bosses and gargantuars, but giving it an aoe GRID ITEM to compensate. This grid item *can* hit the same target multiple times, but as a grid item, it can only stack once per tile, giving a pretty significant nerf to fire peas as most peashooters that are used shoot 3 (threepeater because of ease of access) or mega gatling pea (op)
good quality.👏
Can you do either chomper or snow pea next? I mean you literally mentioned both of them in this video.
I 8nlocked torchwood by getting seed packets from piñatas in the first-second world
Can you beat pvz2 with only explosive plants ?? 🤔
You should do the history of chomper. Used to be my favorite plant, even though it sucked. Now it cost money.
15:33 Or Imp Dragon from Dark Ages.
This video is funny to me cuz I got torchwood for free when there was one of those plant of the week events
history of Blover?? ☘☘
I n t e r e s t i n g
Straight up might be the most buffed plant ever
Turned into mega gatling pea and torchwood squared 💀💀💀
it was perfect in pvz 1, health could've been higher, pvz 2 improved it greatly, making it have a less strong jalapeno effect when killed and do damage when zombies are eating it,, bit like endurian, and with the perma plant food buff, which let's be real on any plant is usually good, it is actually great now thanks to the plant food buff , it may be the price of fire pea, but sun isn't scarce in pvz 2 and literally twice as common, a sunflower only needs to make 1 sun to have a neutral r.o.i, and i knew this when i was very young, i breat pvz 2 when i was abt 8, going through the whole game without sunflower except when i HAD to like when sun doesn't fall. so yeah.
8:26 Wrong. Snap Dragon only got its warming abilities much after the main adventure mode ended.
8:15
Incorrect, Snapdragon did not count as a hot plant until a MUCH later update (post modern day I think) so the situation was even worse than you said
To this day I’m annoyed vanilla PvZ2 Torchwood doesn’t have the area damage bonus it did in PvZ1
Big wawe beach was relaeased before frostbite caves
Bro made a 16 minute video about a piece of wood that’s on fire💀
So what happens when we add Tile Turnip to the combo?
Basically something like this🌶️🌶️
Repeater torchwood is op
Didn't mention torchwood splash damage in pvz1? COME ON
Snapdragon originally wasnt a heat producer smh
1:15 wait what?
Oh
Do the history of hypno Shroom
Make a video about Snow Pea
So you’re just gonna ignore captain combustible and grumpy stumpy?
ngl but torchwood buff we good for it and other peashooters plants like peashooter, repeater, peapod.
Torchwood HP was need for it as its no longer need use wall/defensive plants Infront of it,the melee attack makes sense As how the zombies are eating it likes a normal plant.
Benig in appease-mint famliy makes sense? As almost every appease-mint plant synergies with torchwoond most of them are peashooters and even tumbleweed works with it.
4:13 AAAAAAAH, GEE, NOOOOOOO, AAAAAAAAAH!!!
Ah, who am I kidding? What else did I expect? Classic PvZ 1 UA-cam.
I'm still annoyed that I accidentally wasted torch wood seed packets on unlocking him the day before I would have unlocked him for free...
I could have leveled him up an extra level :')
I used to have mega Gatling and appease-mint, then I got a new phone and couldn’t transfer ):
Okay be honest, has any of you guys heard the word tumultuous?
Ah yes an endurian that cant be frozen thaw out plants boost peas and is also a mini jalapeño
Sunflower pls
