  • Just to be clear as I'm speaking kinda fast at the end. Mineral spirits OR lacquer thinner. Not both...

    The care and effort you put into these videos is stunning, its certainly a break from the fast paced drum videos done by over creators. Keep up the good work Shawn!

    Hi looking forward to seeing how you get the wrap on I've done a few kits over the years and found the hardest part is getting the wrap on I'm also interested to see how you finish of the edge I always cut the wrap back about 3/8" from the bearing edge that way the heads fit better !!

    • @shawnsdrumcave
      @shawnsdrumcave  Рік тому

      Thank you 🙏 I've wrapped about a half dozen full kits and a bunch of orphans, it can be tricky but patience is key. I'll be going over how I generally do it. I usually hand file the wrap at the bearing edge, it's time consuming and tedious but looks correct on vintage drums imo. Also I usually look for wrapped drums to rewrap and make sure the heads spin freely with the old wrap before rewrapping or test fit it first. I know old Gretsch sets you need to cut the wrap back as their shells were the exact size the diameter of the drum or a little oversized making head fitting difficult.

      @@shawnsdrumcave My last kit I wrapped was a 70's 3 ply Ludwig kit which had maple cortex wrap that was a bitch to remove I had to cut 3/8" from the bearing edge on that one to get the heads fitting freely, really looking forward to seeing how you fix the wrap which I always find the hardest part !!

    • @shawnsdrumcave
      @shawnsdrumcave  Рік тому

      @@gretschludwigdrummer209 yeah, cortex is tough as it breaks off in chunks and is very sharp. That could have been because of the Ludwig "bulge" where the plys overlap, some are worse than others all these drums aren't bad, all the heads spin freely. Remo classic fit usually helps with that is they do fit tight. I find wrapping it self not really difficult, it's the prep and filing that are pretty labor intensive but I do it in chunks so I'm not just sitting there doing one thing for hours and hours haha I'll try to be informative as possible when I go over it. It's tough, trying to fit as much info in as possible without making a 3 hour video haha

    Use a crank pencil sharpener for small wood plugs.

    Who knew there were right and left hanging toms. Learned something new! How old is the drill press?

    • @shawnsdrumcave
      @shawnsdrumcave  Рік тому +1

      Yup typical sets with one rack tom would have a left hanging tom no matter the size. Only difference being the badge and tone control placement.
      I have no idea, I'd guess 40's-50's I should look it up lol it was my dads, he had it as far back as I can remember. I'd also guess he got it from this machinery scrap yard we'd go to as a little kid. He'd buy old equipment and fix it up. It's cool, it has a foot lever as well so you can operate it by hand or foot. Never seen another one like that.

      @@shawnsdrumcave right on man! My dad used to buy old equipment from auction dirt cheap that no one else would want to drag home and he'd fix it up. We were the only neighbors with a paint can shaker!

      @@andyzdrums275 yeah our air compressor in the shop growing up was a hodgepodge of 3 different ones put together. He put that together 40 something years ago and still running to this day. When we sold our family's home I gave it to my nephew and bought an upright for my shop.

    Ah, the outer is mahogany, so if shells are 3 ply with poplar in centre then the inside should be mahogany but I never saw mahogany in that light a color as that inner ply?Looks mahogany, poplar, maple from outside in to me?

    • @johncollins5552

      Bonham had 26by15 bassdrum, thats expensive to wrap and buy heads for!

    • @shawnsdrumcave
      @shawnsdrumcave  3 місяці тому

      Ludwig and Slingerlands recipe was mahogany/poplar/maple for a long time. They did make mahogany/poplar/mahogany early on... these are maple inside mahogany out with a poplar core. Bonhams thermogloss set had 15" deep bass drums. Green sparkle was the standard 14" depth. Thanks for watching!
