It seems to me that any time you fish under a railway bridge, you pull up all the stuff the rail workers don't bother to tidy up afterwards, they just lob it into the canal under it. Also you seem to have found "Ratners stock", after he dumped his old stock.

Late to the party, but - wondering if you guys @ Northants have thoughts re why more archeological/historic finds from foreshores vs canals. Seems canals give up contemporary treasures (present -250yrs), while foreshores consistently reveal items hundreds and hundreds of centuries past.
Canal maintenance & dredging must have something to do with it, but beyond that - were canals less used as dumping grounds, was it less acceptable to throw things into a canal than the Thames?
Just very curious, from a social anthropology pov :)
