  • Steven Rinella talks with Seth Morris, Ridge Pounder, Dirt Myth, and Corinne Schneider.
Topics discussed: Hog hunting while podcasting; our gift chapter at the end of the episode from MeatEater's American History: The Long Hunters (1761-1775); lots of whispering; DSD's fight-postured buck decoy; rattling in 21 bucks in three days; turn and burn; hitting 'em with that grunt; a nice muzzle break to Steve's already impaired ear; the coveted pregnant sow; hunting position strategy; the tail tucked in like a G-string; the dog that gobbled up the tarsal glands; St. Anthony, the saint of lost items; that big 'ole bull; Steve's childhood cats, Maude and Fig; the link between cat ownership and developing schizophrenia; stats on wolves killing hunting dogs; naming subdivisions after the characteristics of the land they've replaced; getting into the illegal golden and bald eagle business; Reed's Piano News original outro song for the show; and more.

While y'all are in Texas I hope to hear you discuss the loss of 190,000 miles and 640,000 acres of Texas public hunting land that was available to every properly liscensed Texan from the 1830s until 2023. In 2023 during the 88th legislative session in Texas SB 1236 was passed thus removing Texas public river hunting access by Texans with rifle or bow.
The reason very few Texans knew that the bill was being considered is that it was not labeled as a reduction in public hunting rights but rather was marketed as a means of protecting private land owners from trespassing by Texans pretending to be hunting EVEN THOUGH statistically trespassing on private land from Texans pretending to hunt Texas rivers has never been an issue.
I personally have access to private land to hunt but not every Texan does and although I can hunt behind tall fences that does not compare to the time honored tradition and purity of hunting on Texas waterways.
Texans got bent by elected officials and those that are unaware of the bushwhacking should join together to get this legislation reversed in the 89rh session in 2024 OR pursue this legislation being overturned as being outside the jurisdiction of Texas Legisliars that are breaking the law by violating Sportsman's Acts that protected our rights to hunt in public waterways in Texas.

I appreciate Corinne attempting to provide context with the naming but the irony of her firing a Weatherby rifle (Roy Weatherby) in the great state of Texas (Stephen Austin) on the MeatEater podcast (Steven Rinella) is a little painful. You could spend a lifetime rewriting history and couldn’t get all the white male contributions out of it.

I'm a descendant of Daniel Boone. My family name came in the picture in early 1830s in Indiana then worked it's way down to northern Louisiana in the 1860s and Texas shortly thereafter and we've been in Liberty county since then. I grew up in the swamps and oxbows of the (Holy) Trinity river valley of SE Texas.

I have been hunting deer with traditional hand made flintlock rifles since 1969. My father made my 1st rifle for me in 1968. Every part hand made! He even made a traditional rifling machine to hand rifle the barrel. I killed my 1st whitetail at the age of 14 in 1970 with that rifle. Over 50 years later, and more than 60 deer I am still do'in it the old way.

They are getting rid of the names just to avoid doing the whole virtue searching. There is no more worrying about if someone will dig something up about this person or that one. I don't disagree that it is a little playing to the times, but it's not just about because they're all white guys & that offends people. Getting rid of them for more descriptive names just avoids having to be the morality police on who does & doesn't deserve to have a bird named after them. I think you need to read a little more about why they're being changed. Also, AOS is a scientific organization so are you (Seth) saying people literally dedicating their lives to the study & conservation of bird species in the US (& all over the world) aren't doing anything to help them? Not sure how that makes sense.

1:05:30 I daresay that game warden has never shot, or seen anybody shoot a suppressed rifle, especially a typical hunting rifle. That “crack” of the rifle is still there… super loud. Can’t suppress a sonic boom. Just reduces some of the “boom” right near the shooter.

My understanding is that cats get toxoplamosis from eating infected mice. I believe the organism actually needs to pass through the cat's digestive system as part of its life cycle, and I've heard that it even affects the behavior of the mouse to make it more likely to get eaten by a cat.
