    This was a real useful video. I was able to test the defrost components, and make sure they were functioning correctly.
    There was one other area that I found on mine that needed to be tested, and commonly fails -- the evaporator thermistor. Especially since mine was made before 2005; these supposedly fail often pre-2005 and can mess with the defrosting. I just checked for around 16KOhms on the J1 connector wiring harness between pin 4 & 5 -- mine read 3.6 K when the unit was around 32 degrees.

    Thanks for the step by step, especially how to get into the unit to get at the thermostat and evap coils. I also really liked the trick on checking the continuity back at the main board instead of opening up the whole thing. Sure enough, I found my thermostat to be bad (no continuity), and after opening, found the coils to be all frosted up, the thermostat bulging out, but the heater coil to check out just fine.
    For those wondering about the prices, main boards run about $150, the defrost heater runs about $50, and the thermostat (that I replaced) ran around $10 - when I had to price out and order my part. Of course, when you're not wanting to do the DIY challenge, and want to call in a reputable, professional service agent (like these guys) you'll pay all of that, plus labor for the service call. :)

    Great video. I followed your hack to confirm that the heater and thermostat were not the cause of the problem. Got a recycled circuit board on eBay since this fridge is now just drinks and overflow freezer for the garage.

    Outstanding video and explanation. I checked the continuity via the two plugs at the back, and got zero ohms. Got inside the back of the freezer, and found the heater to be totally shot: the glass tube was black. Have ordered both the thermostat and the heater tube, and hope it fixes the problem.

    • @rollingm5610
      @rollingm5610 Рік тому

      Update: yes, replacing the thermostat and heater tube fixed the problem. In fact, the freezer got so cold, the water line to the in-door water dispenser froze. Had to dial back the freezer temp a couple of setting points.

    I have a hotpoint hss25gfpaww. Bought it NEW about 12 yrs ago. I've changed a few thermistors and a thermostat about 4 yrs ago, and 21 months ago changed the motherboard and paid repairman $220. Last night, only the lights were working to light up the inside, and the light for the water dispenser was blinking on and on and on. Woke up this morning and it wasn't blinking anymore, but it's not making ice or getting very cold at all. The defrost heater checks out good, but has never been replaced. In heater area, there was VERY LITTLE ice crystals on everything, and only A LOT of ice build up near the top AREA only. I told my wife, let's quit foolin' with it and get something else??

    I am stumped on mine, I replaced pretty much everything, about to give up and let it retire. I fixed the freezing issue in the freezer side. It works great but as for the fridge side it doesn't cool. Hovers around 45-50 degrees. I have replace the fan motor in the freezer, the board in the back of fridge. Even though against my best judgement that they were working. The only thing I can think of is the thermistor.

    It doesn't look like you ever unplugged the unit! I could hear the humming and the light was on. Is that correct? Or are you implying that I only need to set it to the "0" (zero) position on the control dial inside the refrigerator side when I am doing these checks? Long ago, we were always told to unplug the unit before any of those things were touched.

    Great video. I replaced the heater and thermostat yesterday. Today I see there are still frozen coils. I tried your jumper wire trick and yes, the heater turned on. Since both main components are new what now? Also, is the jumper just to test or does it remain in? It's not clear. Thanks.

    I have this issue with my GE, I went through and checked all the part recommended to check that would most likely cause the problem and everything checks out as working. But when I had it all apart I noticed at the bottom of the back cover plate the molding that seals the parts behind it is melted and burnt looking like something heated up and melted it. Also the heater at both ends looks like it heated up and is melted and burnt looking. Even though it check out as working with the tester could I assume that it is what is causing my problem and just replace it?

    My GE fridge isn't freezer side isn't getting cold enough. It will freez ice or a cup of water overnight but that's about it. Makes ice slow? Fans are kicking on, compressor is kicking on, an I'm fixing to change the thermostat an and temp sensor by the thermostat. The fridge doesn't have much in it so it's not a circulation issue. If the refrigerator is warm and the freezer is cold, we recommend checking your defrost timer. If your timer is defective, it will cause frost in your freezer section and restrict air flow in the refrigerator causing warm temperatures. Check on ApplianceVideo.com and type in defrost timer replacement for the make of your refrigerator.

    you mentioned a fan that may be an issue, and possible relay, where would the fan be? near the light behind that panel? i had a no cooling problem in the freezer and fridge. I tested the defrost thermostat, and had infinite resistance whether it was hot or cold before testing it out. after replacing the thermostat, the freezer gets cold enough to keep food cold from the middle down. the top is fairly warm, and the bottom will freeze food. i also bought a thermistor but wasnt sure if maybe the one at the top is bad causing it only to cool near the bottom of the freezer. the fridge wasnt getting cold at all, but after replacing the thermostat for the freezer, the bottom of the fridge gets only between 50-60 degrees Farenheit. the top is still warm, similar to the freezer section. I dont hear a fan, but you can hear a humming in the back., possibly the compressor. is there a way to test the thermistor or the relays to see if maybe the relay or fan is bad? i dont know how to jumper out the fan to see if it works, or where it is. i'm thinking its the fan as the top of both are warm but the bottom of both are cold, possibly as theres no air moving over the coils to spread the cold air. thanks, Todd
