Former Fern user (no lumbar, no digital knit). Sat in it for about two years. It really messed up my lower back. Siting reclined was similar to a hammock feeling, but having a rounded lower back combined with compression on the discs is a dangerous combination. Switched to a Leap V2 about a month ago. Been really good so far. My Fern arms actually had none of the rattle/wiggle you've experienced though. So I think it's a bad quality control thing

yeah i hear you. i have a Fern without lumbar and it does round your lower back. it’s still in very good condition so i don’t know if i should add the lumbar or just get a new chair
Appreciate the series so far. I caught you as I was really starting to look at Haworth chairs. I just tested a couple of samples from them and I felt a similar feeling about their stuff. FYI, preferred configurations for the Zody II and Fern make them VERY similar in price. Zody II had lumbar, 4d arms, Aluminum base, and the digital knit. I think it's a solid chair with the knit, but like you said, it was like over/close to 1,600 CAD + tax for a chair that really should be cheaper than that. For the price, the 4D arms felt a bit on the cheaper side, the seat cushion was decent, and I also felt the back wasn't terrible with the knit, but nothing to really complain about to be honest. Admittedly, better than a staples chair, but I see where you are coming from since they have it priced so high. Also tested the Fern, Regular mesh, 4d arms, no lumbar (and lumbar), plastic base. Was a comfy chair... but once again, found myself wondering what you are really paying for. I’d say in my experience, the Fern does feel like something you can really relax into (mesh is really nice) and still feels like a solid chair, but retail for 1,600 CAD + tax... as well as the Zody II... give me a break. ***Keep in mind, I only tested them for one day.*** The office chair market is similar to the housing market right now. The chairs aren’t “Bad” chairs, the problem is the ridiculous price tags that are on them. Many houses aren’t bad houses, but holy crap you are paying for a 1950s build with 1960s finishes for 2024 prices.

Nothing comes close to the instant feeling you get when sitting in a Aeron remastered which feels so much better then the classic, tried the embody and the leap but something about the mesh on the Aeron is way more superior and iv recently tried the Herman miller mirra 2 chair and trust me if you liked the Aeron you’ll love the mirra 2 literally a less aggressive more forgiving Aeron with a flexible back I just wish the arms were the same as the Aeron or that would have been my new daily chair, try the remastered Aeron or the mirra 2 if you get the chance.
I have been sitting in a Herman miller Aeron for like 2 years now and it’s causing me problems, likely due to the fact that I have a size b instead of a c and I’m 6’3.5 wth a tall torso, so my shoulder blades hit right at the hard frame on the top of the back. If you want an aeron make sure to get the right size
the LEAP is a wonderful chair, i have had the headrest version of it, and its pretty much a one-way street, its either you like it or you don't, but thats just my personal opinion
I bought a new Fern (about 2 moths ago), mesh back, lumbar, 4d arms, Tellure seat fabric. The all black color that Fern sells. The arm rests are mostly stable, barely have any wiggle and stay in place most of time. I also use a much older, heavily used Fern, and the armrest move around randomly. It seems like the current 4D armests are working well.
I have to disagree with you. I bought two separate ferns within the last two months and their arms are absolutely abhorrent. And it’s not a defect. They are made that way. You may just not be bothered by it as much. This chair is nothing compared to some of the others I’ve reviewed and own haha. The difference is when I bought my expensive chair it was still cheaper than all these and higher quality. The quality has gone down over the years and prices up. It’s nuts.
The way I have thought of it is you can pay well over $1000 for a new good high end chair, that will offer superior comfort and 10 years or more of a warranty. (Example, cushion is not soft a few years later, and a high end chair company will probably replace the cushion for free). The other path is to continously buy many $100 or $200 piece of shit chairs over ten years, causing many years of discomfort and ultimately spending the same amount as compared to one superior ergonomic office chair.

The Aeron was my unicorn for a long time. Well worth the investment. Now time to find my next unicorn. The Leap V2 is damn close.

it seems the quality control is a lot better with the fern if you get the xbox or halo version (not that you should have to)
From my experience, the quality of the seat is better the arms are still like a carnival ride of doom and the chair still pushes you out.

They were terrible. Honestly none. Haworth anything is a no for me. Also make sure to try any chair in person if you can or a 30 day return policy.
