What’s the Bathroom Situation in an Alaskan Dry Cabin?

  • This is my simple-as-it-gets outhouse.
    You may ask:
    •Why doesn’t it have a door?
I don’t know! I didn’t build this outhouse- I just rent the cabin from the owner. It’s not too much of a bother, actually. Nobody else is around the outhouse and you get a nice view of the woods + aurora borealis.
    •Why don’t you get a compost toilet?
I’ve considered getting another toilet system in addition to the outhouse to keep in the cabin (as it would be more comfortable/convenient in the winter months) I’m still settling in and figuring out what I need. I don’t think there’s a good place to put one inside, really, and the stroll outside isn’t that bad.
    •But doesn’t it get cold?
Sure does! It was -50°F last week. But the dry cold doesn’t feel all that bad.
•Aren’t you scared of running into a moose/bear walking out there?
I was a little nervous when I first moved in and still find myself being on high alert when walking out there, but big animals are not commonly seen in the “neighborhood” that I’m located in- just the occasional squirrel or fox.

I would have a camp toilet or even a 5 gal bucket for emergencies, to keep inside. I just know I'd have times I wouldn't want to deal with the outhouse on top of illness, severe weather or something else.

As many have suggested, a chamber pot is a great idea for just having to pee in the middle of the night or for when you're sick.
When I was very young in the early 1970's, we lived in a 100-year-old home with one little bathroom right off of the kitchen on the first floor. My Mom kept a chamber pot in my bedroom on the top floor so if i needed to tinkle in the middle of the night, i wouldn't be trying to maneuver down the super-steep stairs by myself. It was so handy and made so much sense. It was an antique chamber pot my Grandma gave us to use! The newer ways "to go" are pretty dang cool, tho!

I used to live in North Pole. So even though bears aren’t really a concern they’re still around. There’s also Moose, foxes coyotes and sometimes wild dog packs. May be different now, I lived in the area in the 90s. I was berry picking in Fairbanks one time and a bear was already there in the bushes and I didn’t see him till he decided to make himself known. Always be careful and many Alaskans do not go to the bathroom without a weapon. Love the cabin. My suggestion would be to rotate your water so that you always have 15 gallons stored, then you have three containers that are empty going to town or in your truck. You never know when something might happen and you’re stuck with that water.

Plus I was always afraid of a bug touching my butt lol. Definitely need to keep a high powered weapon with you or even some strong bear mace. And the pipes would freeze each winter, so we had to have water stored up. I am not there now, but I will be going back HOME as soon as I can!

My grandma had no indoor bathroom when we were kids. Her second floor had no heat except the little that came up from the wood stove. Under each bed was a "pee pot", with a lid. We mostly used it for #1, but in the cold winter or during a storm you used it for #1 and #2. In the corner was a sheet hung over a string if you needed to have privacy. The best part was the out house wasn't even close. It was back by the garden.
In winter we all had Dr Denton pj's. (full button body suit with feet and a light hood. We put on knit hats and flipped up the hood. Slept 5 little kids in one big feather bed to stay warm. We slept so well.
We didn't think anything of it. Going to grandma's was an adventure. Her brother lived back in the hills next to a river in a real hand made log cabin. He only got electric when I was in junior high. He had all oil lamps and wood stove. You should have seen his wood pile. He'd fish in that river for dinner a lot. He had a cold room built into a hill. He cured most of his meats for winter. He had pigs. It was amazing. Best bacon you ever had. a side hung in the smoke house in burlap. You just cut off what you wanted to cook.

My grandmother grew up with an outhouse, but always kept a chamber pot for nighttime or when ill. Even after she'd had indoor plumbing for decades. She could still do a squat into her 80s.
I have a separation composting toilet. Liquid gets funneled outdoors via gravity. Solids collect in a bucket with an interior fan/exterior vent which dehydrates the contents, which keeps the smell down, and which prevents flies from getting in. The bucket is lined with a large compostable bag. The maintenance is minimal and I never have to worry about repairing the flush mechanism or overflow.

Over 20 years ago, I lived on a simulated third world village in Florida to train for missionary service. The scariest thing about using our outhouse (which had no seat - just a hole in the ground) was that tree frogs would always be stuck on the inside door. Seeing this initially made we want to go home! I am DEATHLY afraid of frogs. Can't explain why but I have always had this phobia. I even had an encounter with a 7 foot rattle snake and was less afraid of it than with those pesky tree frogs, lol! Fortunately, I always had village mates who were gracious enough to get rid of the frogs each time I had to go. Looking back, that was really sweet of them. #Goodtimes.

My cousin was 7 and was in the outhouse on a very hot summer day, so we prop the door open with a rock when it's hot . It's shaded by some sour cherry trees and has a concrete slab set in front of the door to keep the mud down. We all ran barefoot but put on shoes to use the out house. I stomped spiders. Well little cousin was in a hurry and no shoes. She finished her business and stepped out right on a snake, barefoot. You could hear the screaming a mile away. The slab was cool under the trees and the snakes liked to hang out there. Lucky for her it was a very large garter snake and it was just as scared.

I live in a similiar situation in the forest of AZ (yes, we have more geographical diversity than the Sonoran desert). We use a chamber pot, a vintage porcelain one, for number 1 and go to the outhouse for number 2. Yesterday, i started giving the camp toilet a try, havent emptied yet. There are two downsides to the chamber pot. It smells in the AZ summer, and it puts moisture in the air.

You can buy a regular camping porta potty and use it inside and then empty it in the outhouse when it's full once a day. I had an RV with no plumbing or water either and had to dig a hole or empty my porta potty in a bush somewhere. With the snow it was harder...cuz it shows. But that would save you the midnight runs. And at least you have a place to empty your sewage. Just my suggestion. Having an outhouse and combing it with the above mentioned system would be such a relief and feel almost glamorous for me after having to deal with no toilet for five or more years!
