Great video! The Two-Rock sounded best to me… would have been great to hear a Strat through it at that volume.
Jeff… Would love to hear your thoughts on the sonic differences between the TR Vintage Deluxe 6L6 vs 6V6 version?
Hey! I didn’t get much of a chance to compare the two honestly. I REALLY like the vintage deluxe. Sounds really great with a Strat too.
Was there a bright cap on the Germino? I ask because I have the headroom 100 and originally it didn’t come with a bright cap and I installed one. It super helps bring out the Marshall sound and feel.
Also a closed back cab is ideal.
Cool vid. Great work!
Not sure actually! Agreed on the closed back cabs and Marshalls. I like the idea that suhr and Friedman does with the selectable bright cap, or you can remove it.
Glad you liked the video!
Hey are you still doing one on one zoom lessons? I tried reaching out on your website not sure if it got through.
For my old tinnitus filled ears in order:
1. Divided by 13
2.Two Rock
3. Germino
I believe for the vast majority of us guitar players, we do not have the capacity to crank amps like this (either at home or at the average sized club) so having said that there are some really awesome amps available with a master volume which allows us to have the best of both worlds! This was still very cool to hear Jeff, thanks for doing this one!
They all have qualities I love. Running two at once was the best IMO. But that’ll never happen on a gig! Like I said, it doesn’t have the be this loud for it to sound good. This is insane…
Turn DOWN !!! 🤣😂 Our lead guitarist walked off the stage one night because the venue owner kept telling him turn down. As he left he shouted "If you want elevator music get someone else!"
Damn straight!
Legend
Many years ago we were contracting for a month Long gig at a Lounge. The owner handed me pen and paper and said write down aII the songs on our jukebox y'aII do. I toId him fIatIy, you don't really need us if that is what you want. He hired us on the spot and we did 6 months there; and actually did Learn two of the tunes off the box.
That Divided by 13 just sounds killer, I've had a few of them over the years and they are brutally loud.
It’s amazing. But yeah way louder than I had imagined!
Germino 👌
Would this volume (110-115 db) be considered same volume as a full-hitting drummer?
Not sure but that’s loud!
Wow....that was great. Loved the D/13 and Germino tones. It's too bad that most people don't get the opportunity to crank these beasts and get that primordial experience of playing with a loud cooking tube amp.
More Marshall kinda amps. I loved them all!
you broke sacred rule #77.1542!! You left the tuner on the headstock !!!!!
You’ve passed the test.
😂
The bridge pickup always sounds best to me (with the tone rolled off a bit). Les Pauls are wonderful, but they have too many knobs for my feeble brain!
Ha! Yeah being a Strat guy it always messes me up on gigs.
I’m interested in the speakers. 50W into 50W of speakers? Sounds great but is that cutting it close?
Excellent question. I don’t have a definitive answer for you! In my 2x12 I use 2 65 watt speakers to avoid that potential issue.
Thanks Jeff, I liked the sound of the 2rock the best
It’s an awesome amp.
Glorious tones, Jeff. Ive found that if i can attenuate my amps to be hitting around 90db, im still able to get that circuit of interaction between amp and guitar you mentioned. This is still loud for sure, but at least a little more comfortable than 115db. Still, there's nothing like being in the presence of amps like these at the volumes you were playing at here. Great content, as always
Thanks! Yeah I never play this loud!!
Got my 2 Germino Lead 55 LV's....and yes I play them full up for that Edward Van tone...
Great licks played, fitting these amps like a glove. All amps have their place in different settings. For my likings I preferred the Germino most because of the vintage voicing. The Two Rock sounded a bit more “modern” to me, but played together with the Germino is the rock sound in heaven😊
Thanks for your effort to capture these tones and sharing.
I've only ever fully cranked a couple of my own builds without the attenuator - it's something for sure.
They all sound great at that volume! I’m not unsympathetic to sound engineers, but you do need some volume to create that symbiotic relationship between guitar and amp.
Make those greenbacks cry!
The tubes and speakers have to be pushed enough to bloom a bit.
Haaa....Jeff...!!!...this sounds like me when i go up into the attic (where both music and modelrailway live)...and that's where i'll go now straight after your video...cheers...i'm off now..!!
😂 have fun!
I think I bought that exact Germino 2x12 from Watchtower. Thanks for breaking it in for me.
Awesome!!
I would love a Magnatone :)
Great playing!!! That had to be a blast! How much did you roll back the tone on your guitar when on the bridge pickup? Love the channel! Thanks!
Thanks! I’m not sure actually, it’s all by ear!
Great video. My order would be Germino, Divided by 13, Two Rock. I agree 100% about the ‘circuit’ made playing through a loud valve guitar amp on stage. Playing through a cranked ‘4 hole’ Marshall is very inspiring and for people of our age, I agree, that’s what our heros used and what we grew up listening to. That’s the tone. 🤘🤘🤘Simples. Unfortunately the volume is an issue. ☹️🤔
I love hearing people’s preferences as to the amps. Yeah I can’t do the volume anymore like that, nobody can really!
It has to be cooking baby! Oh and I have a touch off tinnitus, was a drummer in a former life and the high frequency assault from the right hand cymbal playing is what did it. WoooHooo Afghan Wigs!!!
🙌🏻🙌🏻
So much fun! I recently built a 2 x 12 with Greenback and a V30. I have yet to turn the volume on my Orange amp past 3....
😭📢
Btw, I’m interested in the Ron Ellis LRP pickups.
I love them. They carry them at Watchtower guitars too. I think they sound great.
You kinda remind me of Richard Musgrave Evans sometimes!! 😜😜😜
🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for sharing the EQ settings. Standing on the shoulders of giants...
🙏🏻🙏🏻
The Vintage Deluxe has a sweet bite. Great tone Jeff.
Thanks. All three are killer.
You can realy tell when it gets loud because tha camera is having a hard time being stable. Great demo Jeff. Hopefully this trend of quiet amps will turn arround at some point and we can play at higer volumes. I feel the feedback to the guitar is important if you realy want thoes classic tones.
Ha! Yeah it was loud! That loud is very difficult, but decent volume is appreciated! Club specific.
Thanks for this amp info Jeff, I've learnt a lot from your recent vids👍
Thank you!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful weekend jeff also happy last day of September 😊
To you as well!
You know the volume is right when the camera starts to shake and wave to the music!
🥴📣📢
I miss playing at volume!
I do too.
Having a big loud amp is like having a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner with the dual 4 barrel Hemi and the 4 speed, and every street within a 100 mile radius of your house is a 15 mph school zone.
@@jpalberthoward9 ha! This it true. I have used a similar comparison. It's annoying btt my ears thank me.
Jeff this is awesome content. You are a great player!
Thank you!
Three great sounding amps Jeff, and very ably demonstrated
For me? Well if id gotta take one home it would be the Germino 👍
I have one being made...lol. If you grew up playing Marshalls, that's the one. All great amps!
@@JeffMcErlain I shall look forward to the demo!😁👍
Wayyyy freakin COOL..!!
Thanks Joe!
This beautiful thing you speak of, about the connection between you, the guitar and the amp reaching that level where it sings?
That's the EXACT point at which the trolls, the weenies and the Karens will come and start screaming at you to turn it down. They can scream louder than most amps. It doesn't help using smaller amps either. The aforementioned curmudgeons have a built in "sweet spot radar" which springs them into action when the amp begins to sing and it starts to be fun.
I sold my Marshall ages ago because of this and my number one go to amp is my Tweed Princeton because its sweet spot is a far lower Db level than anything else I have. It's still too loud because it sounds good. That seems to be the general rule.
Sometimes I plug into the MacBook and use the simulators in Logic, and they still beat on the walls and complain about the leakage from my headphones.
..........and of course, I'm the problem. Always. I think I'm gonna take up fishing.
We'll see what kind of complaints that generates.
It’s a struggle for sure!! The old joke “A guy walks into a gig with his amp in one hand and the club owner tells him to turn down.”
@@JeffMcErlain I had a picture of a Marshall once.
They told me to turn THAT down.
@@JeffMcErlain Is there any such thing as an attenuator for ear buds? I was listening to Mozart on my phone and Karen started screaming at me to turn it down.
I think modern people need to live in anechoic chambers. But then they'd complain about the sound of their own hearts beating.
Ever been inside one of those? You can hear your own hair growing. It's probably not that quiet on the moon.
I have gone to smaller amps again. You are totally right about the connection between the guitar and amp as a circuit. I have used digital too and it is great but I never could replicate that circuit. I don’t need much volume but I need some for that connection between me, the guitar and the amp.
I lean towards the smaller amps too. I think 30-40 watt is the sweet spot. Loud but they have some headroom.
@@JeffMcErlain I agree. Most of where I play a Princeton mic’d or maybe a deluxe is about all I need and all I can get by the sound guy.
Deluxe reverb I mean.
Great playing Jeff, and indeed those amps at those volume levels sound amazing! The /13 kicked butt!
You said you were not in the room with those sound pressure levels but then extolled the beauty of the overall interaction of the system / components. Were the max volume tests what were played out of the room and the rest of the demos were in the room in the amps sweet spots? Thanks!
That was close enough as I was getting in that small room. I was about 15 feet away in the other room. Had the same experience for me as it was still really loud in the other room.
THAT. WAS. AWESOME. Thanks @JeffMcErlain !!! Beautiful playing , guitar, and all the amplifiers :)
Thank you!
Germino!!!!! Would love to hear a Strat though it. That amp sounded to be more open and responsive.
He makes the best Marshall Marshall can’t make anymore.
