The name Badaga, meaning 'northerner', comes from Old Kannada Badagana, meaning 'north.'According to the Badaga oral tradition, their ancestors were presumed to be Vokkaligas who migrated from the plains of Mysore to avoid Muslim persecution.[1][2] According to American anthropologist Paul Hockings, whose research on the Badagas spans nearly six decades,

Vokkaligars are not migrated they are Native citizens of "Kongu nadu"
Migratted peoples are baduga people at earlier not all kannadigars
      Ganga / Kongu Dhesa:
Kongu Nadu of the Gangas dynasty land is owned to the Nation of Karnataka that is divided only by language.
      Karnataka Land :
Kongu Nadu- Ganga Dynasty at South
Maal Nadu- Kadamba Dynasty at Middle
Tulu Nadu- Chalukya Dynasty at North
Gowders and Nayakers also live in Kongu Nadu, this Kongu Nadu does not belong to Tamilnadu and Kerala, That is full and full owned Karnataka because the King name of the Western Ganga dynasty, The Great King Name is Konganivarma Madhava, So here called the region as Kongan Nadu or Kongu Nadu by Tamil peoples
Kongu name is full belongs to the Western Ganga dynasty in Karnataka, Most theories have been based on Ganga and River Ganges. Somehow they should be related. Ganga Empire is called Gangavadi or Gangapadi. However, Gangas started their kingdom in Kolar and later Nandi Hills(Near Bangalore). Only later Talavanapura (Talakad) was established as Capital. Inscriptions call them Konganis after their Kongani varma, though they call themselves Ganga vamsa in Karnataka
Western Ganga dynasty in Karnataka since 2nd-century Gowders are Blood heirs ( Ancestry) to Kongu Nadu
Gowder and gounder names are same to only Vokkaligars in case of speech at tamilnadu, Gounder name given to Tamil people to the identification of Ganga land, Tamil speak people migrated from Chola Nadu and Pallava Nadu to Ganga/Kongu Nadu
On 26 January 1950, it was formed as Madras State following linguistic lines. The state was finally renamed Tamil Nadu on 14 January 1969 by C.N. Annadurai, but kongu land full owned to Karnataka
Look at this Tamil video to know the Kalabhras of the Ganga dynasty: ua-cam.com/video/VJvhHg6gryU/v-deo.html&authuser=0 The Tamil novel Sarithai mentions a Kalappira king named Achuthak Kalappalan. The book states that Ivan imprisoned the three hairdressers Chera, Chola and Pandiyar. Some of the songs about him are featured in the Yapparungala Karikai text and the Yapparungala Viruthi speech. Many historians told that the Kalapirars belonged to the Karunataka and conquered Tamil Nadu from Periyapurana
      Save Kannada..land ! Grow Kannada... !!

First recorded history of Badugas in Nilgiris. is 1590 when Italian Priest ferrera visited and stayed in Baduga village Melur and Konavakarai. But Tipusultan period is 1800s so the o formation provided by Paul hockings is totally wrong and in his last writing he clearly mentioned that his information is wrong. The worship stone and carvings of Ancient Badaga villages were dated 5AD, which clearly says Badugas resided before 2000 years atleast in Nilgiris.

As someone born and brought up in the Nilgiris, this video is a real eye opener on the rich heridity and diversity of the Nilgiris long before the British came here. Therefore today we must preserve that diversity and culture of the Nilgiris.Thank youu for makung this short but very informative video.

      Hello Madam,
Thanks for watching the video and your comments. We would like to clarify the following.
      1. We are aware of the the ongoing debate what you have mentioned in your comment. But we have not only referred the Paul Hockings book, we also referred various books by J.W.Breeks, E. Francis, Edgar Thurston, Willam E Marshal, H.R. Rivers and many other articles. Information is not be same in all books.
      1. As per our understanding the first note about Nilgiris by a Westerner is by Mr.Fininicio in 1603 and he has mentioned about Todas and Badagas
(I think there are some notes about Nilgiris in Siapathikaram and also by King Vishnu Vardhana in 12th century ).
So what we are trying to convey in the video is that the said group of people were living in Nilgiris irrespective of Change in King/Dynasty and they were living in Nilgiris before British arrives there.
And just for your information, few other Britishers have visited nilgiris before Mr.John Sullivan and it was firstly by Dr.Francis Buchanan. In 1800s, he has visited lower part of Nilgiris and during his visit, he met some Irulas (as per available references).
So our main moto is to explain the interesting history of Nilgiris based on various records. We have not focussed on which group moved to this land first and which is last..Thanks for your understanding on this.

FYI UN accreditation ll not be given to a migrated community. But badaga community has accredited by UN. It means their origin is the Nilgiris. Ppl who migrated from mysore are odayas and lingayats but not badagas. Still odayas and lingayats marry only mysore ppl. Whereas badaga ll never marry anyone other than their community. Names of village did not exist when? Just because Sullivan met todas first, it doesn't mean they are the only ppl who lived there.

The name Badaga, meaning 'northerner', comes from Old Kannada Badagana, meaning 'north.' According to the Badaga oral tradition, their ancestors were presumed to be Vokkaligas who migrated from the plains of Mysore to avoid Muslim persecution. According to American anthropologist Paul Hockings, whose research on the Badagas spans nearly six decades, "the (Badaga) tribe despite its sketchy history is as indigenous to the Nilgiris as the English are to Britain.
So Badaga BJP MP Master Marhan did not do anything even in the BJP ruling period.
    Badagas
Many badagas of Nilgiris have their surname as Gowder which is Gowda in kannada and are Vokkaligas. The fact that Badagas main occupation is agruculture reiterates they arr Vokkaligas. Gowder is a surname used by all badaga clans except two badaga clans of Haruva and Adhikari. Many Badagas of Nilgiris are Vokkaliga Gowdas of ancient Karnataka who migrated from Ummathuru, Tagaduru, Hosahalli, Thayuru regions of current Kollegal and Chamrajnagar districts. They represent the majority clans. Few have adopted Lingayat traditions in their culture. Badagas traditions invoke their places of origin and their ancestors in their prayers even today.
Nilgiris was actually in Mysuru presidency later came under British.Nilgiris has connection with British not with Tamils. Before Independence Baduga was written using Kannada script.Nilgiris is just like Chikka magaluru etc of Karnataka which was in Mysuru presidency later came to Madras presidency.Langague of Madras presidency is Kannada,Telugu,Malayalam,Urdu,Tamil Not only Tamil But official language of mysuru presidency was Kannada only.Nilgris, waynad should be merged with Karnataka.Tamils were brought to this place just as labourers by Britishes just like They took Tamils to Mumbai etc.Nilgiris and waynad Should rightfully belong to Karnataka.

      Hi,
Thanks for watching the video. Here comes the few replies for your comment.
Our focus is to explain the history of Nilgiris and not to conclude which group moved to this land first and which is last (as we do not solid reference for any).
      2. And for your information after the Treaty of Srirangapatna, Nilgiris was controlled by Madras presidency not by Mysore presidency.
      3. Also your statement of "Nilgiris and Waynad Should rightfully belong to Karnataka" may not be logically correct. Long time ago, most of the southern parts including Nilgiris was part of Maurya Empire(who was based from current day Patna, Bihar). Will you agree if people say all those portions including Nilgiris should rightfully belong to Bihar ?
In my opinion, we need to forget the differences and stand unitedly as Indian..
Hope you will take our replies positively..

@@abiasher6703 how can someone be so chauvinistic!? Baduga people do worship and have statues of Hakka-Bukka, who were from Karnataka and built the mighty Vijayanagar dynasty. Do you have any explanation on this? This pretty much shows where and to whom Kongu Naadu rightfully belonged. Ella naave ellavu namadhe annuva muttalara hatra mathadoke hege agathe!

Nilgiri is native land of Kongu Nadu
Many historians told that the Kalapirars belonged to the Karunataka and conquered Tamil Nadu from Periyapuran
Kongu Nadu is owned to Karnataka South land.
