Fortunately I got into recording professionally in 2004. In the Box. Today I run a commercial Studio 24 Channel Cubase and Studio One In The Box. I remember the days of mixing on my Tascam 488 having to remix because I didn't push the lead guitar up at the exact time or the vocals were too loud in certain spots. I can understand why the veterans love using the console but I love the pinpoint accuracy of automation. If I had one of those boards I would only use it for recording.

Thanks so much for this series of videos…. I’ve been looking at that exact Audient configuration as well as the SSL Origin (and several others). It’s nice to see it in use. I keep trying to talk myself out of it. Nobody really needs a console anymore, but there is a primal part of my brain that keeps me wanting such a straightforward workflow. For the ease of tracking, cue mix set up, and a reason to not look at a computer screen once in a while. It would be wonderful to have some hardware that always works… no updates, it just keeps doing what it was designed to do. Thank you!

I can tell you, after growing up using analog gear when it was on it's way out and then coming back after over a decade in the box, it's incredibly fast comparatively. Done a few preliminary mixes with a very short list of outboard on a project that didn't need to have a ton of processing and the original mix took me a whole day and revisiting it the mix took about 3 hours on the board. 4 FX units, 4 channels of compression and a stereo limiter and minimal plugins itb and I spent the last hour just listening back to it. So much faster and a lot more character and creativity because when you move fast you don't second guess yourself.
The SSL XL-Desk is a good option for a pure analog setup. It's a very compact, but quite clever console that offers a lot of flexibility in a small space. With the built in 500 rack, that makes it even more compact, since you need less gear in external racks. For some folks, they might get away with none, and just use it as is with the 500 rack filled up with maybe half EQs and half compressors or something.
These guys are old school and I love it
If you guys could do a spotlight on using plugins on insert points on a console that would rock, I am currently trying to do that until I can afford more outboard gear, but got a vintage console for a steal and restored it and want to use it for more than just summing.
I think they were talking about I/O inside of your DAW. You can’t “insert” the plugin but you can route the plugin to one of the aux channels into your console.

Should you EQ on the board as you record into the daw , or leave eq off while recording and tweek when you play back through the board ?
Hey, Mike! It’s totally up to you. Generally, any EQing that you do while recording will be committed to the track, which means you won’t be able to readjust anything after it’s been recorded. On the other hand, if you EQ after everything is recorded, you can tweak and adjust as you’d like throughout the entire mixing process. Doing it this way gives you more flexibility to make changes later on in the mix.

Which mixing console is in the video?
That’s an Audient 8024 console, in this case with the DLC (Dual Layer Control) option, which gives the console a second operating mode, where it can serve as a control surface for some DAW functions.
