    Valid gripes. Hopefully Blackmagic is listening and will update the app in the near future.

    I’d love to see slow-motion frame rates, including those of PAL regions (100/200 FPS). Currently, the slow-motion feature in the iPhone’s native camera app is useless in PAL regions when shooting under artificial lighting. The resulting clips turn into a flickering mess.

    Cinematic Mode is missing despite Apple opening it to 3rd party developers at WWDC last year. No developers have seemed to have implemented it which sucks. Also needs a remote app for Apple Watch for viewing framing and record control like the Camera app for Apple Watch.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 місяців тому

      Yeah true. Rumor was Filmic Pro was going to possibly implement that before their recent shake up at Bending Spoons, so likely not happening now.

    Thank you for this! I especially appreciate the section on the Remote App. That is tops on my list for using the iPhone in conjunction with an ATEM in conference settings.

    Fun fact:
    The 2x zoom lens inside the native iPhone camera but also Cinema P3 app actually uses a different kind of debayer and is not using any pixel binning. It results in a much higher resolution which exactly resambles a 48mm lens without any real sacrifices besides maybe a tiny bit more noise in shadows.
    The 2x zoom on the Blackmagic camera app on the other hand is just a 2x digital crop on the 4K video...
    Another big letdown of the Blackmagic app is the 35mbit limitation when shooting H265 while other apps such as Filmic Pro and Cinema P3 allow for much higher bitrates. Around 100-150mbit is the sweet spot for 10 bit 4K H265 in-camera.

      Yeah the auto HEVC bitrate is a real bummer.

    I miss the ability to direct monitor my audio when recording, as I was able to do in Filmic Pro. Most of the time I use an iRig Pre HD to use XLR mics, and it has a direct monitor feature. But if I just want to plug in a mic with a 3.5mm jack like my RODE VideoMicro, I miss the ability to use a headphone/mic splitter to listen to audio as it is recorded.

      For sure. And it’s basically brand new. But they also offer Davinci for free and even that version is feature packed. It’s really a loss leader though to get people to subscribe to Blackmagic Cloud. And who knows, maybe they’ll make a paid “pro”version one day too.

    +1 on a remote app. Still using the filmic pro (pre-subscription purchase - still pissed off) for their remote app. Just not realistic to film yourself without it. Yep, know there are workarounds. But its a necessity to use another device to set AE/AF reticles and monitor yourself (framing) during shooting. One-person production just not realistic imho.

    I totally agree on the remote stuff, but I guess because apple doesn't use DJI gimbals, and doesn't need to start and stop recording using the apple watch, or use remote stuff, that is why it wasn't added.
    I would love to have a remote!
    If you look at Apple's Scary Fast event, pretty much every feature that BM Camera includes is something that was used in that event. Apple thanked Black Magic specifically, and said they worked closely with them to develop it. So, in my opinion, Black Magic wanted an app to test their cloud features (the announcement from Black Magic basically showcased it as a way to use their cloud offering), and Apple helped them build out some tools that Apple wanted to use. That is why we get Tilta Focus and tentacle time sync, but no DJI gimbal or Apple Watch integration. The features they chose to include make no sense when viewing from a consumer standpoint, but make perfect sense when viewing what Apple needed for their event and further marketing.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah you’re probably right about that with the specific features. In the end the Blackmagic app is a loss leader for them to get people to sign up for Blackmagic Cloud. But it’s still cool they offer it for free, a lot like DaVinci Resolve. Trying to get new customers into their ecosystem.

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua 4 місяці тому

      @@iphoneographers yeah exactly, now that they have it, it seems like they are going to support it a lot. I didn't mean to imply that they wouldn't add cool features, just that they seemed to prioritize the specific things that Apple needed.
      I would really love to see an apple watch integration.
      I also think that the app really showcases what a nice UI they have for their cameras.

    For me, the worst of all it the lack of AUTO ISO when shutter speed is locked. Makes it impossible to vlog outside

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 місяців тому

      Yeah that’s tied to the dual reticle complaint for me. But oddly, I think it used to have auto ISO, but the recent December update changed that and so now there’s only manual ISO control and no exposure compensation anymore either. That’s why I think it’s basically a Beta.

  • @LongCaoOfficial
    @LongCaoOfficial 5 місяців тому

    Hey. The 2x zoom of black magic camera app is nearly identical to 2x lens option in native camera app. Because they use virtual magnify glass to crop in to the sensor, so it could ultilize the entire 48Mpx of the main sensor, so 2x zoom give us much more detail than 1x.
    I've test it myself and it's was almost identical to native app in term of detail and noise reduction. In fact it's better because you have the option to zoom 1.2.. 1.5x up to 2x...

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 місяців тому

      I’ve played with it some too, but it’s a digital zoom in Blackmagic and while it can be OK, definitely wouldn’t go in much further. The 2X in the native app is not a digital zoom. And there you can also pinch to zoom and get the same kind of fractional amounts like 1.3x or 1.6x, etc. It really just depends on what you’re shooting. For social media and that kind of thing it’s perfectly fine.

      It helps the quality & noise levels for sure. Using other apps you can shoot 100Mbps or higher. Here they average from 20-40Mbps I’m finding.

    I hate the fake log, they can't bypass the cameras actual hardware, putting a filter over a rec709 image won't get your more than the original rec709 image. It can't bypass tone mapping and sharpening. Log profiles are useful for capturing images, no app can change how the hardware is capturing the image.
    If you could apply log after capture, why couldn't you just capture in rec709 and convert to log in post? obviously that wouldn't work, once you have the data, no matter what you do with it, you can't add more than what was in the original data (that is why when something is clipped, you can't recover it). Log is useful when translating the voltages being captured by photo diodes and encoding them into a digital format. If you can't do that, then log offers no benefits. That is literally the purpose of log encoding. That is why camera manufacturers publish white papers showing their transfer functions, to enable converting between their format (how they encoded the sensor data) and linear.
    From what i have heard, Apple Log literally bypasses certain hardware when capturing images, its built into the camera hardware, and the image signal takes a different path when capturing in Apple Log. All apps are just using the api's exposed by iOS, so you can get and work with the image that the hardware gives you.
    I've never seen an example of someone getting more dynamic range or more color data out of a fake log profile. If that was the case, i should be able to add more dynamic range in post production.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 місяці тому

      FiLMiC Pro has a white paper and it is actually log… It’s a logarithmic curve. And you can get a couple stops of extra dynamic range in the shadows. The highlights there was not much room, but it did help with rolloff. But yeah, unfortunately you couldn’t bypass the sharpening or the noise reduction, so that part was always baked in (using promist filters while shooting was beneficial though). And it particularly worked well with ProRes. CinemaP3 has a good log profile as well.
      The other thing it does, a lot like OG flat profiles on a DSLR (before they had log) is it just gives you a much more pleasing image, even if you don’t get any additional DR.
      So yes, it is a good option even if it has limitations, but you know that going in.
      Now though, Apple log fixes all that for those that have a 15 pro series device. Which is great.
