Any historic monuments or antiques are precious state assets, ought to be preserved for all humankind.

Bosra shams was an extraordinary ruin. And believe it or not, neither the rebels nor the Assad government caused much damage there. But the problem is that in the early 1900s, locals started quarrying the extraordinary temples, churches, baths, and more for building materials and built their homes right inside the ruins using their razed remains. I was there in November 2023. Friendly locals invited me into their homes and inside I found doorways and tables made out of pillaged black basaltic Roman columns and fireplaces made of pillages Byzantine mosaics. A man hung cooking utensils on an ancient pre-Roman Nabatean statue. Bosra would have been as magnificent as Palmyra or Jerash before this 20th century desecration. Now outsiders are approaching these locals and offering them money for their tables, fireplaces, and anything else they can find. These people’s grandparents really didn’t respect the heritage and now they’re quite poor. The ruins look quite similar to the way they did before the war but the ground in many places looks like a Swiss cheese of illegal excavations (though nowhere near as bad as Apamea). Every local I encountered offered to sell me Roman coins. I complained to the DGAM in Damascus and he said “what else is new, what do you expect us to do about it? They’ve stolen and destroyed a lot more than just coins.” The smuggling doesn’t surprise me.
This place hasn’t really changed hands as many times as Mr Javed is suggesting. It was split between the govt and some pretty moderate rebels early in the war. The rebels won. Then it flipped back to the govt side in 2018…but only on paper. The rebels entered into a reconciliation agreement with the govt. Under the agreement, Mr Assad would once again control Bosra Shams on paper. It would receive government services and pay taxes. But the Syrian Arab Army who retook it in a brief battle would leave to focus on trying to retake Idlib. Rebels allowed civilian government employees, citizens, and tourists to enter but not the army. When I was in Bosra, I did not see one red, white, and black Syrian flag, nor did I see one of the ubiquitous images of Assad. Instead I saw rebel green, white, and black flags and reconciled rebel troops manned the checkpoints. But it was fully integrated with the government held regions and anyone could drive there from Damascus or Latakia. Lots of people were coming from Jordan to buy cheaper groceries. Everything was completely calm and the roads were in good condition.

Thank you for the report. Now we know that the locals are poor and desperate. ❤
