Too many people are distracted with social media and not focusing on the amazing world we live in. Theres so much out there for us to enjoy. I am 27 and building an ultralight from scratch. I am a specialty welder fabricator and aviation has been my passion. More kids need help to find their passion that will motivate them to learn a skill that they can make a living with and enjoy going to work every day.
I have to agree 👍 about the social media. As a retired IT Network Analyst , I had to put up with many people wanting be to unblock Facebook. I still have friends talking about it. If it's not LinkedIn, I have no use for it. I think it is a social problem. The country spends way too much time with it.
I'm 52. When I was a kid, I saw one of the planes and fell in love with it. Didn't know much about them back then. No internet and information was not as easy to get. Now being older and still intrigued I want to fly one before I am too old to do so. Watching channels like this and seeing others do it is motivating, My stepdad wasn't a pilot but flew in a plan two tours in Vietnam getting our boys back safe. Would be just one more thing we could connect with. As soon as I can find a place in NC I'm taking a course and going to fly.
I think there are people like myself who have wanted to fly their entire life. But now they are in the position where maybe still do this! . I started taking flying lessons in my early 20’s but never finished it. Then marriage and kids and insufficient funds prevent you from pursuing flight. Now I’m 66 years old and fly a paramotor with a trike. I’m also interested in ultralights because they are affordable for the average guy. Just simple pure flight.
I'm only old because I was born before you. I learned hang gliding in 1986. Put a Minimum Power System on my hang glider in 1990 and started with trikes in 1996. I'm still flying today in central PA. When I'm bored I get on UA-cam and search out other flyers. I've been flying weight shift all my life, but if I ever got into a 3 axis ultralight, it would be a Quicksilver. I enjoy watching your videos and some of the adventures you take. Thanks for posting your videos and take care.
I'm 61 and watch your videos because they're pure and your not trying to sell stuff that's to expensive for the weekend flyer you suggest what you can do without making it sound like it's a must...keep doing what your doing
These Quick Silvers started out in the early 80s. Fourty years later makes for a bunch of 60 year olds that remember them or finally got to fly them. Still a great little plane. You mentioned your brakes. Watched you fitting them. Looked very heavy for the amount of braking they could offer. I am a retired a/c mechanic and spend a lot of time helping a friend with a Kiebitz biplane. We sapped out the pathetic drum brakes for bicycle discs. 100% better, even stopping a 450kg biplane. Like the channel.
I am 63 years old and the reason I watch Ultralight videos sometimes is because It's on the bucket list of things I would like to do in the years I have left. Until then, I watch, learn, and fly along with your videos. Thank you for making them and keep up the good work.
I don't know why other older folks watch your channel - for me, I'm 73 and for many years my life revolved around flying - something over 1500 hours in GA aircraft, (favorite was my Navion). For financial reasons I had to give it up, but never quit loving aviation. At this point the financial issues are gone, but health issues mean I will not be able to fly GA again. Ultralights are the only avenue open to me to get back in the air, so I really enjoy watching you and Matt enjoying the sport. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
They have lived their lives and are not afraid if anything happens to them. Now they are ready for something daring cos most responsibilities are now well taken care of
@@UltralightAirplaneDriver Funny I had same thoughts too. I asked myself this same question over 10years ago. Am interested in ultralights though am ot In my 50s yet but was really curious why the older ones are more involved and several things came to mind. They also can afford it at this time. Their children are all independent, they are retired or getting ready to do so.
It's an old sport. Most older guys used to fly or still want to fly. Younger people these days are too busy living on the ground. They don't understand the beauty of it.
Well for me, I’m 67. And our young son still at home 7:15 is 15, and he and I are both taking flying lessons. We’re having a great time. It’s finally where we can afford such an incredible thing. So I am intrigued with getting an ultralight because I think it’s a good way that I can get an airplane that won’t cost too much and won’t break the bank. So that’s one reason I watch your channel I love watching people fly in here and talk about the airplane. So That’s why I am watching. And I’m not sure this may be the first time I’ve been on your particular channel, but I have watched a lot of other similar channels. Thanks for sharing!
So why does a guy like me 74yo watch ultralight videos? Its still fun, I hang glided in the early 70’s, built experimental AC and went on to ultralights early 80’s. Flew for an airline and retired. Built model planes as a kid. Aviation is a passion and I’ll keep with till I can’t. Should be getting my new Aerolite 103 soon and plan to fly out of my pasture same as yourself. Thanks for sharing your passion. Old but not bold, CFII,MEI,BGI,AGI and A&P
Can't speak for everyone, but for me @59 years of age it seemed owning an ultralight was always one of those...."One of these days" type of things. Always seemed to have too many other things that needed taken care of first before I could follow my dream of flight. Other people that needed taken care of...other things that needed fixed or replaced, or, or, or.....Finally put flight (and myself) as a priority and haven't looked back since. Own a Quicksilver Sprint and LOVE it. If anyone reading this has the same "one of these days" thinking... take the plunge and have some fun while you can. Time goes by too fast. As for your question, pilots are pilots young or old. I watch many youtubers/flying videos as there is always something to learn. Thanks for the vids!
YES!!! I agree. DO it. Now retired from flying, my time owning and routinely flying an ultralight is memories I cherish. So many old folks look back with regret on things they could have done while they were still physically and mentally able...but did not. Not flying is a common regret. Now I can't imagine NOT having had all those adventures.
69 here. Didn't even start flying UL until I was in my late 40's. I have sold my plane, a MiniMax, and retired from solo piloting because it was time. I was making the kind of mistakes toward the end that could easily get a man killed. I had hundreds of glorious hours flying it around western WA farmland though, and now get my kicks motorcycling or watching other's UL videos to relive the thrill of flight.
I spent my whole life dreaming of flying and finally at age 40 got a private license. Still want to try these flying lawn chairs! By the way I'm 64 now.
Here is "ONE" , of the reasons I'm pretty sure. There is probably other pilots like me out there (I just turned 70) who might believe they won't be able to pass the medical again and a big also are "poor" living on a small ss check, and were a professional pilot all their lives flying most every kind of single and multi engine aircraft that miss flying so much. If they are like me they are holding on tightly to the idea that they might someday be able to come up with the money somehow to buy an ultralight, and with their experience could certainly fly and enjoy one . Yes, if they are just like me they certainly appreciate and enjoy "every " flying and building video that you go through the trouble of sharing with us. Thank you buddy, keep up the good work. I, think I heard of another Joe Covino that lives in New York years ago when i Googled my name. Yea that's crazy if he's a flyer also. But I live in Lake Havasu, Arizona. CFIAM/A&P retired. JOE COVINO.
Hey man! Quick question- Why didn't you mount the brake lever to the control stick? This way, you don't have to take your hands off the control stick to slow down.
If you would mount it to the control stick the cable would have to be able to be moved back-and-forth side to side. Instructions state to put it where it is mounted currently. It would make sense to have it on the control stick if cables would be able to be moved.
old folks like me watch to remember. Remember our flying adventures. Share the feelings we imagine you're having. I flew a lot of things:gliders, SEL Hot air Balloons (even at Albuquqerque) was lucky to fly everything from a very small glider, to a race competition super glider that had a parachute compartment for braking if needed. HAB's commercially. We could do a whole blog on our experiences and do an "episode"on different types of flying if you're interested. I have many stories. I soloed at 6hours in a Cherokee. that kind of won't and shouldn't happen again. And it just goes from there. I was at at 22,000 ft. had oxygen of course when I look to my right and a friend simply pulled next to in wave and we jus sat there together wordless. Looking out over the rockies. So many memories late at night. The reason I kept watching this one is because you were flying for flying's sake..For me there was rarely any other kind.
Sometimes the question we ask is as important as the answer … Why aren’t more young people interested ? Sometimes I think the general awe of life is absent for the younger generations. Just my opinion.. 🤷🏽♂️
I'm 52. I've been flying since I was a 14. My first QS lesson was at 16 when Macau had some undeveloped land and let people run ultralights. I got my pilot's license in the late 90s and went back to ultralights to save money, soloing a QS in 2000. I took a break raising kids and now we do family flying vacations. Maybe older people have more money, are practical with engines and stuff and we watch videos to learn, as opposed to the quick gratification of TikTok like media.
Old! Maybe we're young at heart. I'll be 61 in one week. But, I sure have the bug again. It's been about 40 years since I flew a conventional aircraft and about 25 years for Ultralights. I gotta get another. I'm selling what I can and spending only what I have to. If I can't find a good used one I'll be looking for something like a Sport 2S amphibious.
I’m currently 76 years old, had a career as an aircraft mechanic working at a military depo on fighter jets. Also flew hang gliders in the 70s and 80s, flew some early ultralights in the 80s, and watching your videos, dream about The possibility of getting an ultralight at my age. Giving it some thought but that ship has probably sailed. I really enjoy your videos and thinking about the good old days.
I get the same numbers on RC flying videos. Alot of us are either current old pilots or for some reason not flying anymore...maybe due to medicals. I have been flying fixwing and helicopters for years..I still enjoy watching ultralights and experimentals. Maybe because thats my next adventure...who knows.
Lots of us older folks are no longer flying commercially, nor with a family, so we are open to ultralights and light sport planes. Or we finally have disposable income, but don't need a fast Bonanza or Cirrus, as we aren't in any hurry to get anywhere.....fun is the goal.
Hell, I'm 42 years old and can't afford a 12-15k quicksilver. I messaged Andy at tri state asking for one that needed rebuilt or worked on and he stopped messaging back after I told him I had 5k to start with.
Yeah it sucks that things are so expensive nowadays. I got blessed with my ultralight I bought it for $3500 although it wasn’t flying I took a chance. I put a lot more than that back into it
one reason why is because most of us worked our butts off raising kids prepairing for retirement in our early years, now that we are older and can afford it some still want to do things we enjoy.
We’re all living vicariously through you buddy. I have a 17 and 14 yo at home and if they’re not playing video games they’re WATCHING other peoples video game play on UA-cam. 🤔🤔 lol The only reason my boys are interested in flying at all is because we take my PPC up and they get the urge to fly, but watching on YT? Nope. Anyhow, that’s what I’m coming up with.
An addition question would be what the average viewer age for ultralight channels like yours? Im 52 and i search out this stuff. Maybe the age bracket here is: finally chasing the dream of flight that life got in the way of; they can now afford to do stuff like this; fantasy of flight i.e. escapism LOL.
Mine has hydraulic bike cycle breaks on it lots of breaking power just use my smallest finger on them being careful not to lock them up . Cable type might work also 👍
It's a group that is ready for something different. Most have some money yet not enough for 100 thousands to dump on a plane. At 57 I can't race moto cross any more. I can't go hunting and put 25-40 miles a day on my feet. I know a lot of fishing holes that flying a little ultra light would be the perfect way to get there. So I'm watching and reading a lot right now cuz this looks like fun and something my worn out old body can do. I'd give a list of the crap I've raced, places I've been and adventures I've had but I won't bore you with them. I've led a life hanging of the edge I've broken most the major bones in my body and worked construction my whole life. I've done most of it with a buddy who has a small ranch about 30 miles away. It has a large shop that can easily hold a couple of these little grass hoppers. There is also a small air field about 10 miles away. So I'm looking for info before I go buy one and spend the money having someone show me how not to crash. So thanks for the info from an OLD guy a year or so after you asked. OLD GUY (OLD PEOPLE) You must be very young very young
I'm 70 year's young. The scenery was beautiful, the height wouldn't bother me, but, I'm a chicken hawk. I assume it would glide down, slowly, and land, if a engine failed ? Thanks.
Low 50's and a sport pilot. UA-cam brought this to me probably because of research on affordable LightSport and Ultralight Aircraft to purchase. Not many to rent and most are too expensive to purchase. I also like the upfront, non-nonsense, matter-of-fact way you present yourself, your aircraft and the sport. I can't speak for why younger viewers are not drawn in other than younger non-pilots seem to be more into gaming and pranking and ones who are private pilots or higher or aspiring to be, at that age, seem to be on a track to the airlines so are probably sent more videos relating to more ga aircraft, training, etc and may not be into working on their own, simpler aircraft.
Rotax 447 shaft to five belt pulley. Thanks for the comment. These videos are usually a few weeks behind. I was able to get it figured out thing runs great now. Some sweet stuff coming. Thanks for watching
Nice flight, your landing skill is very much improved. You are getting very use to spoting and nailing the landing area you pick.. Practice makes perfect 👍 Its expensivish,,, yes ultralights are the least expensive but still expensive. More expensive then PPG. In Canada you need certification so add 3 to 5k$. Hanger/field fees if you dont have a wing you can easily trailer and store at your home. So unless your racking in big dollars as a young person, the older 50+ people are more in a position to afford unless mom and dad can pay for you. True desire finds a way to overcome the financial barrier in a few cases. I think the QS is a great flying machine but I would not get one because I cant trailer in 5-10min. I am learning on Basterdized Flexwing trike and in all its simplicity is still a challenge to tailer in 30 to 40 min. My solution was to get an enclosed trailer so I dont have to fully stow/bag wing to travel like on my open trailer. I think the QS people would have a huge hit if they could on their hands if they could take their current design and mod it a bit to fold the wings. You got lucky with your hanger owner willing to do a mod on the building. Cheers
Yes if the Quicksilver could be folded up and trailer it would make it an absolute hit. Yes I feel Blessed that neighbor redid his building just for me to store it there
I think it comes to affordability, most young people unless they have loaded parents can't afford to spend thousands to get a license, even though is more affordable than most people probably think, I didn't even know the path to become a pilot and I wasn't very interested to find out cause I just assumed it was basically for rich people, so lack of information is also a big factor, I am now working on my NPPL (UK) though and I can't wait to get my license! 😁
@@LOCOsnakeBITES here you need an NPPL (National Private Pilot's license) but it's just valid in UK, without a license you can only pilot any aircraft that's up to 70kg or 75kg if it's equipped with an emergency parachute, but I don't think I would want to fly any aircraft without any lessons first, specially with the tricky weather we have here
It stands for World Ultralight Fly In. It promotes ultralight/lights port flying. It gives everyone a chance to fly together while being in different locations. The are probably a few UA-cam videos of it. They do have a Facebook page where you can get info.
It's not too late Frank. The man who introduced me to ultralight flying was 81 when we first met, and 87 when he passed. If you can't afford a plane, at least you could find an airport with a 2 place ultralight trainer that could take you up to experience the whole thing first hand.
@@Robnord1 I have 14 hours in a Maxair Drifter (floats) and think that with a few extra hours, I could ride that bicycle again. The problem is that I live in Florida's most densely populated county and reside in a town home. First, there aren't any airfields locally that even allow ULs, and (second) SheWhoMustBeObeyed says I have to have a place to park it before I can buy my own. Two virtually insurmountable problems. But I can still watch ;-)
Why older, almost all male, viewership? 1) Older males are more likely to be at a point in their lives where they can afford to fly; both financially and time-wise. 2) Many males have sacrificed their freedom for decades to work and raise families. Flying represents freedom, both physically and spiritually (why do angels have wings?). 3) Males are more likely risk-takers, or at least want to live vicariously through those that are.
I watch and I’m old because I just bought an ultralight that I am rebuilding and I like to watch videos that share my interest. If you’re complaining, let me know and I will unsubscribe and stick to the other flyers.
Most of us won't take offense at you calling us "Old". I've got news for you, 50's and 60's is NOT old. This is when we have the time AND the money to go out and do all the things we have always wanted. I have a paramotor, nano-trike (powered hang glider), other fun stuff.
👍👍
I am 44 and I am watching from Oregon
🤔🤔 lol
The only reason my boys are interested in flying at all is because we take my PPC up and they get the urge to fly, but watching on YT? Nope.
Anyhow, that’s what I’m coming up with.
I wish I could afford a little ultra light, they look so damn fun
An addition question would be what the average viewer age for ultralight channels like yours? Im 52 and i search out this stuff. Maybe the age bracket here is: finally chasing the dream of flight that life got in the way of; they can now afford to do stuff like this; fantasy of flight i.e. escapism LOL.
👍
It’s just us old guys watching and wishing we would’ve done what you are doing.
Splendide !
One of the old guys here. 😂
Wish I could get my 447 going.
Some kind of firing electrical issue somewhere.
Timing nobody seems to know. 😬🔨
Crap that sucks
Cdi box or stator, or both. You can test the stator with a multimeter , if its ok replace the cdi if it's a no spark Problem.
Mine has hydraulic bike cycle breaks on it lots of breaking power just use my smallest finger on them being careful not to lock them up . Cable type might work also 👍
Interesting 👍
OLD GUY (OLD PEOPLE)
You must be very young very young
I'm 70 year's young. The scenery was beautiful, the height wouldn't bother me, but, I'm a chicken hawk.
I assume it would glide down, slowly, and land, if a engine failed ?
Thanks.
This is the age group that really starting to enjoy life with retirement and looking for something to do besides stay home and watch UA-cam ❤😎
😁👍👍

Lol it just showed up in my feed I’m 67
Sweet! Thanks for coming and watching 👍
What is your motor / drive combo? Is there a clutch drive? I think that noise is a clutch or bearing…or pulley.
Practice makes perfect 👍
Its expensivish,,, yes ultralights are the least expensive but still expensive.
Yes I feel Blessed that neighbor redid his building just for me to store it there
Is that a battery pack hanging down under your seat at 1:51 ?
Not a battery pack but there’s definitely something hanging there 😄
I think it comes to affordability, most young people unless they have loaded parents can't afford to spend thousands to get a license, even though is more affordable than most people probably think, I didn't even know the path to become a pilot and I wasn't very interested to find out cause I just assumed it was basically for rich people, so lack of information is also a big factor, I am now working on my NPPL (UK) though and I can't wait to get my license! 😁
Great to hear that you’re pursuing your license. Appreciate your comment
In the US, no license is required for ultralights. I heard uk was considering something similar years ago but not sure what came of it.
@@LOCOsnakeBITES here you need an NPPL (National Private Pilot's license) but it's just valid in UK, without a license you can only pilot any aircraft that's up to 70kg or 75kg if it's equipped with an emergency parachute, but I don't think I would want to fly any aircraft without any lessons first, specially with the tricky weather we have here
What's a Quicksilver going for these days?
Don't forget this weekend is WUFI !
What is that
It stands for World Ultralight Fly In. It promotes ultralight/lights port flying. It gives everyone a chance to fly together while being in different locations. The are probably a few UA-cam videos of it. They do have a Facebook page where you can get info.
@@danmichaels1562 interesting
Unfortunately this weekend is going to be another windy one for us in the North East
Dont know about the other “old guys” but I am medically retired and on a fixed income and simply cannot afford to buy an aircraft and fly it…
Your breaks would hold better but they have to much cow S on them lol
😂 That might be true
Ultralights are a bit of an old man's sport, you are the odd one out being so young!
I agree I feel like the odd one out at times. It’s just odd to me that young folks wouldn’t try it I think it is the most affordable step into flying
There are many more 50 and 60 year old pilots than 20 and 30 year old pilots.
79. Jealousy. I should have been doing what you're doing 30 years ago.
👍👌👏good comment
I watch and I’m old because I just bought an ultralight that I am rebuilding and I like to watch videos that share my interest. If you’re complaining, let me know and I will unsubscribe and stick to the other flyers.
😄 not complaining at all I’m just trying to figure out if this sport isn’t promoted to young folks
Well I'm 71 and I have an ultralight that I'm about finished rebuilding.

Most of us won't take offense at you calling us "Old". I've got news for you, 50's and 60's is NOT old. This is when we have the time AND the money to go out and do all the things we have always wanted. I have a paramotor, nano-trike (powered hang glider), other fun stuff. We come here to get more ideas. You will be "Old" one day and you will understand. I'm 53. I'm just getting started having fun.
Great comment 👍! Thanks for watching

Think about when your aircraft was produced and do the math.
Stay away from trees and water buddy ,did you find out what is that noise ?
500m thats best hight. higher has no plaseur. its to slow. you look oround and its same. you need to fly little lower t hawe funn.
