    Appreciate the vid, I subscribed. One comment though; I was very surprised you didn't mention what I think is the biggest obstacle by far to getting into flying: hangar availability. Where I live (and I think also most places), you can't get a hangar anywhere, at any price. Even if you're willing/able to spend $2K a month for a hangar, good luck finding one. Best you can do is get on a bunch of waiting lists, and hope you're not on it for 5 years, only to then get the privilege of paying an obscene amount for a hangar when one finally becomes available. And if you do ever get that call, you have to make a decision/commitment in about 30 seconds, because there's definitely someone else chomping at the bit for it if you don't want it.
    Unfortunately it seems to me you have to FIRST secure a hangar somewhere, before you can even consider buying any aircraft, esp a fabric covered one. It's ridiculous, and I can't believe it's still such a problem; it really keeps a lot of people out of flying I think. Maybe someday. But seems it's not an issue where you are, which is fortunate. Anyway, I still enjoyed your vid and it was informative...thanks again.

    Thanks for the truthful information about 103 ultralights. I was going to say if you had a legal 103 Challenger you were very lucky. When you said George Hurts, I knew you were a lucky man. I don't think many people would go to the lengths George went to to build that airplane. Thanks again.

    Great video, thanks! I am a private pilot and owner of an old C172 out of Wilmington, DE (Say Presidential TFR, LOL). A couple of years back EAA had a week of UL webinars and sounds really cool. I understand the airspace and other limitations and like you said, you really need to be out in the country somewhere I think. There is a company in FL called Aeromarine (Chip Erwin) who makes a single seat LSA plane (Merlin) but also a Part 103 Merlin Lite. With optional add-ons it can be made an experimental motor glider, be a bit heavier, carry another gas tank, etc. A cool thing is he found an Italian engine that is 4-stroke and more reliable than the 2-stroke. I would need (and want) a radio and ADS-B in/out around here. Still I think it looks like a ton of fun, probably wouldn't be a good idea at KILG though, we have some commercial traffic (Avelo 737's), ANG C-130s and HH-60s, corporate jets, etc. I always wondered how UL's and, indeed LSA's handle with squirrelly winds. I have hindered of hours in my 172 and 100 hrs in a Cherokee years ago, and although I almost exclusively fly on near perfect days, it can still get bursty sometimes. The other day only RWY 1/19 was available as 14/32 and 9/27 were getting maintenance all week. Just so happened the winds were basically straight from 32! So it made it interesting...hehe.

      @@TheJonjonj Yeah, I'm in the Philly Mode C Veil and to the west is the Baltimore Mode C veil and to the south is Dover AFB. I think strictly UL aircraft are basically allowed class G for the most part. I'm thinking more towards an LSA but I don't know. The day after I was minted a pilot my CFI at the time took me up in his old Citabria for an intro to tailwheel and that was such a hoot! I was shopping for TW planes for years. But, insurance would scare the bejesus outta me. my 172 is easy but, it's old. To go anywhere substantial I really want an A/P. But mostly I just bee-bop around locally, just to be up in the air...

    Very informative video. I always wondered about the two seat rule. As somebody who is completely blind, light perception only, I need two seats. As I would need somebody with me. And as I can’t get my license due to obvious reasons, it’s a bit of a problem. Although again, I don’t live in America. I live in Australia. Where flying anything without a license can get you in trouble. That said, I do own a x-air standard with a 618 two-stroke on it. It is based on the weed hopper ultralight, and flies like an ultra light. In fact, I have been told by a self-taught pilot, that someone who teaches themselves to fly, learns to fly an x-air in about half an hour. It is also much trickier here, because the rules are different. Over there, a pilot can let someone who isn’t a pilot control vehicle. Whereas in Australia, only instructors could do that. Then I can’t afford instructors, and I haven’t met very nice ones. But I still have had a chance to fly several vehicles. I’ve just had to bend the rules a little bit.

    • @TheJonjonj
      @TheJonjonj  3 місяці тому

      @@TheJonjonj yeah, I know. And I kind of understand it, but it is a bit of a bugger for blind people. But in Australia, you can’t even fly something with one seat without a license. You can’t even fly a drone without a license. You can’t even fly your toy helicopter ball from the shop without a license now.

    17:30 😅 I was the kid who drove 12 hours to buy a paraglider off craigslist, and accidentally came home with 3 of them and taught myself with books and videos.. I'm glad I did it.. but damn I wish I would have saved more for the real training.. Years later I befriended another paraglider briefly (not many around here) and he was a certified instructor and started asking me questions and realizing i didn't have half the answers made me realize just how little i knew and how much risk I had been undertaking up until that point.. I'm 66 years old and do not have the budget for all the costs of flying. I did take and passed ground school w/the intention of flying. However, I never got over 11 hrs of left seat time. Today, getting my license is out of the question, however I LOVE flying. SO, in lieu of actual flying, I realized my dreams of flying vicariously through Microsoft flight simulator. I have dozens of planes at my disposal from a Cessna 150 ( Cessna 177 is my favorite single and Beech Duke is my favorite twin) to a DC-10 and can fly them all realistically, and I treat all these flights seriously. I follow all the rules of actual flight, ie, I don't do stupid, unrealistic things like try to land a DC-10 on my local airport's 2000' runway. I fly these planes as if they were REAL FLIGHTS. If I crash, I'm examining, what did I did wrong, etc. I don't have to worry about fuel, maintenance, hanger storage, and ownership costs and I can fly anytime I want. I've learned how to fly IFR in bad Wx for the challenge w/out the danger. The simulator fulfills all my desire to fly. It's a GREAT, very satisfying alternative to real flight.

      I highly suggest looking at paragliding.. If your knees aren't there anymore, then a paraglider trike.. Nice thing with them, is it's a glider first and foremost, so if you ever have a medical issue, you have a much better glide ratio/chance of reaching the ground alive. The wing new is going to be around ~3,000, you can find used trikes and engines for around 1500-2000 for the trike (although it's an easy thing to make yourself if you have any mechanical know-how) and a used engine for 3000-5000 and new for around 7000. I'm a big fan of the fresh breeze stuff because I like how they engineer quick detachments so if the engine for instance were on fire, you can release the engine to escape the fire. They fly slow, easily controlled, and you can get several hours of fly time, and land them in basically any field.

Medical is a problem for me nothing serious I have a few odd ball diagnoses doctors told me not anything to worry about, but the FAA worries about way too much. FAA doctors only communicate by letter like they live in the 19th century. Takes them months to respond I just don't want the hassle. Don't buy a belite .the plane looks good but built poorly. I bought an ultra cub in 2012 first it was shipped without a battery. Then when battery arrived it melted wires under the dash . I couldnt find the problem. Until the 4th time. When the builder put it together he did not crimp the main ground on the engine block. It was parked in our hanger. When it is first started and warmed up I always had a tail tie down. Just on idle it would vibrate 8-10 ft. To the right found that the prop was used it had a hub mark that did not match. My. Engine took it to a cfi and aircraft mech. It was way out of balance . The airframe was twisted. The tail wheel bolts were bent .the left main spar on the wing had 3/8 inch of slack up and down right before take off it would lift into position with a hard thump .brakes kept locking up problems were endless. I parked it for 3 months when I came back to clean it up check it over etc. the rivets between the cab area and fuselage had just fallen out or pulled thru just from south Texas heat. And it was completely in two pieces on the concrete floor. Sadly belites are buy as is. No refunds. Although James is a nice guy .he's not a good builder. Houston, YOU'VE got a PROBLEM with your 'logic', concerning medical reasons for not flying solo!
    How is that again?
    Well, if a person is NOT 'medically able' to fly solo, but they ARE legally able to drive a 4,000 lb to 11,000 lb vehicle down the Interstate at 70mph-80mph, just HOW do you square that Circle?
    Which is MORE dangerous? What is the FREQUENCY of danger in a comparative sense? Are you gathering my drift?
    Further, I've come to despise the FAA for the most part: there are many quality people in the field, but those running the agency are duplicitous, loathsome, and highly hypocritical scum in my view, re, Part 103, and regarding the Experimental LSA Class of aircraft. Their 'one size fits all' paradigm is a load of bovine fecal matter in the extreme!
    The FAA is NOT concerned about the safety of pilots, nor non-pilots on the ground: they are concerned with POWER, THEIR power, and in getting their BUDGETS increased, so they can 'grow the agency', which means MORE money and more power, and hence, more control! The FAA STOPPED being about SAFETY ages ago!
    How is that again?
    Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy: I live in the midlands of the Rocky Mountains. The FAA 'power', 'weight', etc. requirements/limitations of ANY aircraft I would purchase for either Part 103 or LSA, are the SAME as someone who would operate that SAME aircraft at Sea Level (Florida, Texas, take your pick of any coastal state, or inland state). So tell me, does a plane operating at 7,000-10,000 feet altitude operate the same as a plane operating at 2,000-5,000 feet altitude, carrying the SAME LOADS?
    I have 33 hours of flight time in a Cessna 172, and my Practice Altitude was 8,000-8,500 feet, because my airport is at 5,200ft!!! During the Summer, with temps at 95F, will the Cessna 172 at my airport have the SAME operational abilities as a Cessna 172 taking off from an airport ANYWHERE in Florida, or Georgia, etc?
    No, they won't. Despite these FACTS of Physics, the scum at the FAA have promulgated requirements upon those of us who live in Mountain Country, which DIRECTLY PUT OUT LIVES IN DANGER, because our aircraft do NOT have the abilities to operate with the same power available to Sea Level pilots. Our Load capabilities are NOT the same. Our fuel consumption is NOT the same! Are you getting my drift?
    I live in the Middle of Nowhere. I like it that way. I don't like Big Cities (or most of the people who live in them, given the 'Blue' destruction in most Big Cities, happening because of how the majority of people vote, but that is a different matter), and I intend on flying 'back country' the majority of the time. I'll have to fly Part 103 in the future, because I haven't been able to find a SPL instructor anywhere within Wyoming; Billings would probably be the closest locale, and the best option, considering how much I despise Colorado politics. The ONLY way to get to Billings affordably and in a timely manner, would be flying Part 103.
    So again, how about you address the illegitimacy of the requirements from the FAA, which I would argue contravenes the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, and how that endangers pilots and people on the ground, as it relates to Part 103 Aircraft, and what we can do to ameliorate, or CHANGE the requirements?
    If I sound pissed off, that would be because I am pissed off: I want EQUAL TREATMENT and EQUAL ABILITIES (craft wise) with all you fine folks flying at 'Sea Level' (altitudes under 6,000 feet). I really do NOT think my demands are unreasonable!
    Thank you for making this video, which has focused just how much is wrong with the Part 103 rules as they currently exist.
    Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY

      @TheJonjonj  4 місяці тому +1

      @jrbailey3208 I do not completely disagree with you and trying to explain it from my perspective is obviously a waste of time considering your passion towards the issue however I will say that most... not all but most medical issues come with some warning which in a vehicle mean pulling over and possibly making a call. Something that is not an option while flying. Like I said I'm not arguing with you but in this video I said I personally would not fly if medically it was not safe for me because I don't want to have an issue while flying and get dead and some people saying "well he died doing what he loved" because no I Don't want to leave that way. I do understand your frustration and there definitely needs to be a reform to medical but we can hold our breath! And for future comments they will hold more traction if you don't start out by questioning someone's logic. I'm a licensed pilot I have alot to lose and I'm not willing to take chances. If that's logic problem then I think we are all in trouble!
