even Sony maxes out at 250 MB/s unfortunately only Xbox offers maximum speeds coz of Microsoft cloud infrastructure. If Microsoft put a top quality SSD or if you put an internal SSD in Xbox One X it will increase speeds by 100 MB/s
I’m glad you made this video. I work for an isp and I have gone on many calls where one device will get better speeds than other devices. And the customer thinks it’s the service. This video just shows that your internet speed is just one factor in the grand scheme of internet speed. Different device have different limitations and your internet speed can’t overcome those.
Thanks for making this video. Been having this exact same problem and I was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. Just ran a test on my laptop, which is on Wifi, and it's consistently getting ~380-400/250-280mbps, while my hardwired switch was only getting 48/25. So stupid that Nintendo's architecture caps you out at this :(
If/when Nintendo updates the Switch's software to support USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet speeds, and updates their servers to support Gigabit Ethernet speeds, you'll be good to go. Thanks for the video. Very informative and concise.
Well to watch a 20minute video, you gonna watch it in lowest quality, with buffer in every 2-5seconds and you gotta wait 5mins for those to load up. Yep I've been there.
I just did the same test here, probably not the same conector but I get almost fixed 93 Mbps, checked my NAT, UPNP, cable version (tried CAT 5, 6 and 7), nothing is blocking the speed on the router side. I tried a few times with the WIFI on 5GHz, and its literally 10cm distance from the Switch and the max speed that I get is 76 Mbps, guess this 17 Mbps of difference makes a diference haha. One last thing, I use my switch to play Fortnite sometimes and the difference on game is noticeable, I get like 10-20ms ping on cable vs 30-40ms on WIFI.
Thanks for making this! I have a fiber connection as well and was getting those same low results with WiFi, wondered with LAN would go faster, guess not! Looks like the hardware they used is just designed to be inexpensive... Hopefully nintendo will add in faster hardware in whatever they make next! Thanks again! Now I don’t have to try and buy one of these myself!
Great video! I was getting 14 down and 13 up and I realized I was using a 2.0 usb ethernet adapter. I didn’t even realize that. I ordered the 3.0 one so hopefully I’ll get bigger speeds. Wireless isn’t much better.
Hey John, I think Plugable is actually a pretty good brand for things like this. I bought one of their USB switchers to set up 2 laptops with my DJ controller.
it's not slow at all, you are not supposed to have a 1000mbps server avaiable anytime you want to use it, because it cost too much, unless you run a datacenter in every country and even tough it would be also very expensive to maintain. And at that speed you pretty much can download anything even faster than other consoles since nintendo games are 10 times smaller in storage size.
I use a Ethernet connection on my Switch and get 300mbps on my internet and I can get 150mbps on my Switch. I hope you made sure your Ethernet Cable was the right Cat model, anything below Cat 6 you won’t get anything over 100mbps
It’s because the USB3 port on the dock is not actually USB-3, Nintendo blocked it from achieving USB-3 speeds. It’s still basically operating as a USB to port, which is why you won’t get it faster.
i have the feeling the switch bottlenecks your speeds regardless of how fast a connection you have. i have similar numbers to you with a similar ethernet connection. in fact i found this video because i was trying to figure out why my switch speeds are so drastically lower than my actual internet speeds. not sure if i can improve this in any way. guess its just a hardware or intended software limitation.
I think there's something wrong with the ethernet adapter you're using. I've seen 70-80 down through an adapter on switch, and my internet plan IS 80 down. Have you tried using the adapter to do a speed test on your PC?
The most my internet has ever gone up to was 42 mbps. Seems goo enough though. I think spending money to get like a million mbps would be a waste. My internet is fine
Well I get similar performance with an ancient usb adapter from wii I had. it is only a 100mbps adapter. On my pc I get about 94-96mbps per second with same adapter. I would say its a switch limitation. When downloading games it does about 6000KB/s which is like 46mbps. In practice though this doesn't matter. its plenty enough speed to play multiplayer games, its only when installing new games from eshop you will notice a slower download speed compared to say a PC.
The Nintendo Switch's hardware supports USB 3.0, but the firmware locks it out, so Nintendo needs to manually update it (odds are they're going to release a 1st party 3.0 adapter and they're waiting until that releases to enable it). I've also heard talk of Thunderbolt 3 but I highly doubt it.
The problem is the speed test on your switch is not capable of reaching as high speeds as speedtest.net because it hasn't been improved and developed as much as speedtest.net as the switches is for generally verifying the internet is working not testing maximum speed
Bro some people live in areas where they can't get above 25 mbs. 58 ain't slow XD it's good. Switch doesn't support 3.0 so that's why you aren't getting the faster speeds.
I get 30-40mbps on my Xbox one and I never lag at alllllll. Ever!! The switch doesn't need that much (Mbps) to play games online anyway. For downloading games that's a different story .
i did mine with 1000/1000 at&t fiber ant the back port my max was 72/30. so im either thinking the network chip inside the switch limits it or the dock itself limits it to 100/100?
Good to know. I just got a Ugreen 3.0 gigabit adapter and I’m getting 128 mbps down and 43 mbps up on a 500 up/500 down fibre connection. Before, with wireless it was a exactly 66 down and 33 up. So… hmmm… kinda a bummer, Nintendo.
My comps get 200 down 20 up, switch gets 75 down 15-20 up. It depends on the cable and connecting it to the back. The usb3 isn’t enabled on the back yet (if ever). It isn’t perfect and I know the cables i use take a 20-30mbs hit so it’s definitely the switch having issues still.
My problem is when I connect by provider A with 25Mbps connection vs provider B with 25Mbps connection, provider B speed is maximum while provider A only 10% of speed. Maybe there's problem with dns routing. Because I connected both providers via PS4 is just fine, no major differences. But the Nintendo switch networking is just big problem.
Just got the Switch OLED and was hoping the built in ethernet would be faster than the launch switch + USB ethernet I was using before aaaaand... no On a 220/20 connection I get max 85mbps down and 14.5 up. It's very inconsistent too, a lot of the time it'll read 50mbps. Sometimes I check the built in bandwidth log in my router while downloading a game and it can be as low as 5mbps-20mbps Pretty much the same performance as my launch Switch and USB adapter. Everything is using CAT6, and a laptop connected to the same switch will hit the cap no issues at all. My actual internet speed is very consistent, so I'm not expecting these fluctuations to be my connection itself I can only assume the Switch is somehow incapable of higher speeds, or that Nintendo's servers are throttling bandwidth. I would guess the speed test is run by Nintendo and if they decide to limit bandwidth, it won't give you a true reading
Thanks for the video!! But yeah, it does seem that Nintendo's servers are not capable of faster internet connection (I get 350dwn on both my xb1x and pc). I tried multiple different ways on my Switch, port forwarding, DNS change, still same speeds of 85dwn.
This is normal? Not a bad hardware or INternet service? My max ethernet speed is 64 mbps and I have a gigabit network using 3.0 USB gigabit ethernet and my lowest latency os 28 millaseconds (using the network indicator in the game 'Warface')
I pay for a 600 mbps internet and I'm forced to download games at 6 mbps instead of 60 because of a ridiculous structure... What did they think about games nowadays of at least 15 gb???
Nintendo's servers are just as trash as Sony's PSN! Lol. Microsoft's Azure servers that power Xbox Live are in a league of their own. Now if they could just get some more damn worthwhile exclusives.....
I got a UGREEN third party adapter. It says it supports 10/100Mbps connections. I’ve plugged that into my home router and the supposedly usb 3.0 port on the dock. I’m not struggling with the Switch overheating like some third party Ethernet adapters has since 5.0 firmware. I have a pretty decent home internet connection (300 down/20 up). I’m barely getting 20-30 down and 1-5 up on my Switch though. I got the Ethernet cable mainly for college though because there are three Ethernet ports on the wall and using the switch takes from the already crappy dorm WiFi (like 1 down and maybe 1 up) despite good (100+ up and down from the wall) internet. I haven’t tried turning off the WiFi on my home router yet but I’m not getting the speeds I get on other devices. I get 10-20 on Switch WiFi, 20-30 on Switch wired, 100-150 on laptop WiFi, 150-200 on laptop wired, but only get 250-300 on my phone WiFi. So the Ethernet cable clearly helps but I don’t know what the bottleneck is. It’s either the Switch hardware or the servers it connects to to test it.
Maybe I could get it faster by setting the DNS to 45.55.142.122 and using the SwitchBru DNS and use that “hidden browser” to run speed tests with different servers than Nintendo’s. I normally use OpenDNS with my router so I doubt that’s the problem as Google DNS isn’t much faster and for testing downloads I up the MTU to 1500.
I don't think that Nintendo intended a Full Gigabit speed on the Switch. I think a 100 Mbit is more dan enough. So the USB 3.0(??) port in the Switch is not using the full speed. Do the test on a PS4 or Xbox One (S) and see what the speed is on those console's.
mahal holiday Yes, plug the GameCube adapter to the side USB port, and even though the adapter comes with 2 USB cables, only one is needed. (Test them one at a time till it works)
I know, I regularly can only max out at 8mbps (which, yes, is leagues better than 300kbps, but still) and hearing him talk about how slow 54mbps is is making me go hrrrrrrng because he doesn't know what he has compared to others.
I got the exact adapter dude. But I’m only getting 28mps idk what’s going on. Makes me think my adapter is garbage. Cause my Xbox one x lan connection goes up to like 99mps
I know it is disappointing to see 50mbps when you have speeds up to 1gbps but 50mbps is fast enough for devices unless doing multiple downloading on multiple devices. Remember over a decade ago when speeds providers max was at 50mbps
Yeah, the problem is I believe the switch doesn’t support high speeds. I have 100mb/s at my home but the fastest I ever saw was 63mb/s. The average is around 50. Then again, the only reason you would want faster internet on Switch is for downloads because online play is entirely P2P dependent. You can have super fast internet and still lag if someone in the game has bad internet
I think the firmware is the problem. Because I tried andoid for nintendo switch and the results are very diferent . I had 350 megas and my intenert service is 400 megas.
Well,I don’t feel bad now lolz,I just got the Nintendo switch adapter and test my internet connection and it shows 40.5 with 200 mgbs so not bad,I was thinking maybe 70-80 at least? Since on my Xbox series S and ps4 I get 120 mgbs. But after watching your video,I think I’m ok with what I have lolz.
Just buy the Nintendo Switch Lite, 1G (1000Mb) internet connection, 930Mb via ethernet on my PC, 500 to 640 via WiFi on my iPhone XS MAX and PS4... And around 50Mb only on my Switch Lite I was wondering why... Now I know Nintendo play it cheap. Edit: I managed to force two frequency on my router, classic 2.4Ghz and the more efficient in close distances 5Ghz with respective SSID and I can now go up to 80Mbit/s round in the test and I calculated 32Mbit/s (4MB/s) effective in download of games.
So supposedly the USB port on the back of the Switch is not a real USB 3.0 port? I'm doing more research...
@Mental_dexterity it's always cheap manufacturing
John Glasscock yeh it’s USB2.0 they would never put 3.0 controller into it there is no need
Physikly it is an usb 3.0 port. But the switch itself only supports usb 2.0. So the switch needs an Software update that unlocks usb 3.0
DeamBeam nah the switch is USB 2.0 with a 2.0 type C port
The port is wired 3.0 all it needs is Nintendo to enable it in a software update idk what these other guys are smoking
It has nothing to do your internet speed it's nintendo's datacenter networks are incapable of certain speeds........
That's unfortunate considering some of their games are fairly large in size. Maybe the hardware is limited as well
@@JohnGlasscock Don't think so but could look into it a bit more it's more likely the datacenters aren't even in the US.....

The Switch is compatible with the LAN Wii adaptor RVL-015. It's 100 Mbps. I think that it's locked to that value.

I know, I regularly can only max out at 8mbps (which, yes, is leagues better than 300kbps, but still) and hearing him talk about how slow 54mbps is is making me go hrrrrrrng because he doesn't know what he has compared to others.
I'm surprised you can watch this video, I have 65mb and it won't load
what res do you have to watch youtube videos in
I have 115 kbps average
@@Windo0ows I feel your pain, buddy. T_T
Are you using a cat 5 or 6 Ethernet cable?
5e
@@JohnGlasscock I use cat 6
@@ed6ix nice
Would this work for a ps4 because my port on the back stopped working
Ya i got a 3.0 adapter too but the port on the switch is 2.0 because NINTENDO WON'T UPDATE THE FIRMWARE
I got the exact adapter dude. But I’m only getting 28mps idk what’s going on. Makes me think my adapter is garbage. Cause my Xbox one x lan connection goes up to like 99mps
Maybe use the licensed Ethernet converter?
What usb 3.0 its set on the Nintendo switch to be usb 2.0
wished that i have this wifi speed, our wifi speed is 10 mbps, but there are many people connected to it so it only goes , 2 to 7 mbps
Merry early Christmas everyone
I know it is disappointing to see 50mbps when you have speeds up to 1gbps but 50mbps is fast enough for devices unless doing multiple downloading on multiple devices. Remember over a decade ago when speeds providers max was at 50mbps
it doesnt matter how fast your internet is if the hardware cant support it, youre not going to get the speeds youre trying to get.
Change your Nat type to 1 or 2
How are you doing that with at&t dsl?
If 58 isn’t good I’d assume 22.8 kbps is absolutely horrendous and unthinkable...
odd, i get 60 over wireless wifi, but i think around 50-60 for download is the cap
I have 120 mbps at my switch.. (w a 400 mbps Network)
So my 1GBps ethernet subscribtion is wortless as well?
I think the firmware is the problem. Because I tried andoid for nintendo switch and the results are very diferent . I had 350 megas and my intenert service is 400 megas.
Im kinda pissed Nintendo can't get fullspeed
Meanwhile in the Philippines we have a maxinum rate of 20 mbps wifi
did you try on wifi ?
Well,I don’t feel bad now lolz,I just got the Nintendo switch adapter and test my internet connection and it shows 40.5 with 200 mgbs so not bad,I was thinking maybe 70-80 at least? Since on my Xbox series S and ps4 I get 120 mgbs. But after watching your video,I think I’m ok with what I have lolz.
I got a third party lan adapter (usb 3.0 to rj45) and it dosent work, ive tried everything
Return it and get the official one. www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Internet-Officially-Licensed-wii-u/dp/B01N6S068R
Ffs I have 300kbs
Hey John nice video but for some reason, my Nintendo switch doesn't show me the Wierd mode symbol can someone help me please
Edit: I managed to force two frequency on my router, classic 2.4Ghz and the more efficient in close distances 5Ghz with respective SSID and I can now go up to 80Mbit/s round in the test and I calculated 32Mbit/s (4MB/s) effective in download of games.
can it stable for splatoon 2 and smash ultimate multiplayer ?
You only need like 2mbps for most games. But smash is more laggy so you might want higher speed
Does it support usb 2.0
