Why do we need a lan adapter in the first place? This should've been on the dock.
Edit: DAMN People are still commentin to this post i even forgot i posted this but yes they finnaly did it After 3 whole yrs........ nice
Super factz
You're talking about a company that has the fastest selling systems of all time and still haven't added messaging or voice chat to any first party game natively. Oh yeah, they also took over a year and a half to allow back up saves, oh yeah.......and their USB 3.0 port isn't actually a USB 3.0 port. WHY EVEN ADD IT IF IT'S NOT A 3.0 PORT?!?!?
@@Hirrei themes are a low priority at this point. There's other issues need fixing well before themes.
Giorno they know damn well what theyre doing, they have their own branded adapter and have been doing this shit since the Wii U, they want to sell people adapters instead of just adding a port to the damn console

That's a problem , servers are costly. If they were to make servers for Smash Bros you would have to pay like 20 Bucks for a year.
Oh wait...
Haha I hate my life fuck Nintendo

@@doesntexistanymore978 But they give ya what?
Servers!
@@curywuast1647 also they give you free games
Servers wouldn't fix anything because fighting games need a peer to peer connection.. What they could do is make it easier to check how good the connection would be before you play your opponent, or just match with people that have a connection that is good enough.
I just wish they had ping and speed info in game plus warnings so that a player can be informed that they are the problem in the connection.
Zephyr Sol
Nintendo will add that to their games in 15 years.
Dude, every game in the last 10 years has dropped that info tidbit because of how toxic people get over it
I mean, I agree, I'm one of those people that will yell at you for ruining everyone's game when I see you running around with 150+ ms in our lobby, so there's no way in hell Nintendo will give you an indicator to show how good your opponent's internet connection is
I wish they split players so you can only match up with people who have the same ping/connection like a lot of fighting games do

I got a new router and now it’s between 24 and 36 mbps :P
The dock should've had a dang Ethernet port to begin with
I got my switch about a month ago and I was shocked there was no Ethernet port lol
really weird, since a 100Mbit port would have been stupid cheap to add and is more than enough for everything you want to do with your switch

Actually he didn't. He is still saying that unless you uploading a 8K video etc, you shouldn't need a LAN connection (to play games) and that everyone's case is different. He is wrong, because LAG will always be higher on even a "good" 5GHZ WIFI connection.
Why we pay for online even tho we still have peer to peer and not servers?
Because you pay it. You know how much of the money from a Playstation Plus or X-Box Live Gold membership go towards servers? 0,00$. But as long as people pay, why not charge for it?
EskChan19 what this guy just said is so damn true. If no one paid the service fee, then there wouldn’t be one. Companies would compete to offer a game that didn’t require it. But we pay. Fuck we buy loot boxes even though we can clearly see how they have ruined many games.
@@PuckDaily Where did i say console games are Peer-to-Peer? Nowhere that's right. Most games are not. But again, i never said that.
What i said is that you don't actually pay for the servers. Which is true. Because on console, dedicated servers can go two ways. Either a third party publisher hosts them themselves, then paying Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo for the online infrastructure does nothing, because they don't get a cent of your subscription. Or they host on Sonies/Microsofts/Nintendos servers. But that's pretty expensive. The publisher has to pay a pretty sum to the company they use the servers of, and that is how they are maintained. Either way, none of the money you pay for the online subscribtion actually goes towards maintaining the servers for online play.
You could argue about First-Party Games now, but those are maintained easily by the sales of the games. Videogames have among the highest margin of profit of any medium on the world. Using some of that profit to keep their servers running definitely wouldn't ruin companies of the scale of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. And the overarching infrastructure is easily paid for by the PS Store, XBox Marketplace or Nintendo eShop, where every Sale made gives some of the money to their respective owners. So really, they can easily afford all of this without subscribtions. The only reason they have them is because people are paying them, and no company would refuse free money for doing absolutely nothing.
@@brailleeulogy120 True, I would probably buy a shit ton of boxes if smash had them. And complain about it. Logic.
yeah, we wouldn't have this paywall if the Xbox 360 failed.
but it didn't.
I get that dedicated servers are expensive, but we are also paying for Switch Online. When I pay for something I expect to get my money's worth, and at the moment, there is not a single reason for me to be paying for this horrible excuse for an online service until Nintendo switches to dedicated servers.
Thank you - heaps of publishers provide dedicated servers. Smash ultimate is selling amazingly, how can anyone say its too expensive.. After most people who got the online service only decided to for Smash.
But it's just Nintendo being fkn clueless - so typical Nintendo.
I assume it was too expensive to add that ethernet port too, cause only expensive items can afford those premium ethernet ports that literally everything else comes with. Such a big company and equally big dumb dumb.
Good luck. Because as far as I remember, the money that people that pay for online with Xbox or PlayStation doesn’t even go to dedicated servers in the first place.... so I doubt Nintendo will ever do that.
@@Jordan64Games the difference, is that microsoft and sony dont own activision, and they dont provide the server for Call of Duty for example. Nintendo, on the other hand, own Super Smash Bros, so they are most definitely providing the servers.

Good on you, Bob, it’s totally understandable. Ping and consistency are the biggest reasons I ended up grabbing a LAN adapter, and I’ll have everyone else know that when I DM’d Bob about it he was perfectly fine with conceding I had a good reason to get one. Like you said, the explanation in the previous video was the only real issue, and something definitely happened since then. Plus, ping in Splatoon 2 is a lot different than ping in Smash, where winning is a matter of frames.
NTSCollector-J yes, thats the main thrust of what Im saying without spelling it all out, Smash benefits from lower latency.
NTSCollector-J all good my friend ☺️
Lol I came here because the tiniest lag spike in Smash Ultimate can cost you an entire game, and I wanted to learn more about lan adapters
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge indeed, as a matter of fact shooters tend to have AI on their servers to "figure out" what other players are doing so that data updates don't need to happen every single frame.
Basically the necessary data is stripped and everything else is only calculated locally on your console, and every X frames all clients are "updated" and get new info from the other players.
In between those update cycles, there's a lot of "i think the player wanted to do this" which is why shooters tend to freeze much less than games like smash, since they literally "skip" those dips.
However when you're playing a fighting game clearly you cannot employ this method as frames matter substantially. You cannot "guess" what a player wants to do for 30 frames and then update the clients.
This in all honesty is a serious disadvantage for fighting games as they freeze a lot more often.
Unfortunately Nintendo's shitty online does not help since we do not even get servers for the games to help in this matter.
However, dedicated servers would STILL not be good enough for smash, at least NOT for pros. I am sure there would still be ocasional dips that would be significant enough to annoy them.

Smash over wifi is perfectly fine, i played with 2 switches connecting on the same wifi line while using videochat as well to a friend in the same matches from his own home.
I could establish lag free matches.
People tend to overestimate the wifi at there own home.
Because you have full wifi signal, only user of the connection and connected to 5ghz doesnt equal great lag free gaming.
Most complainers probably cheaped out on there home network or never spend a dime and use the free rental router they got from the provider.
Never doubting they could be part of the problem as well.
The lan adapter is not a real solution for most users.
It only is a good option if you play docked mode exclusively and the dock is nearby there internet router / modem.
Most houses dont have a way to establish a wired connection outside the living room.
You technically are on a LAN as LAN means local area network meaning a network in a small geographical area. But I'm guessing your not using ethernet
A lot of wifi users i know of are suffering from lag until they plug it in. Run a long cable through the house under the carpet its not going to be a problem you set it up once and you are fine.. The only issue is, if the router has all its ethernet ports filled and your stuck with wifi. That is a pain in the ass
I had to buy the LAN adapter. The wifi is too unstable anywhere I go, it’s not about speed. It’s impossible to play rocket league (mario kart and smash) online without one.

I'll be trying a wired connection in a couple of weeks once I get an adapter, but as it currently stands it's not playable.
Seeing as my PC always plays nearly perfectly in every game (p2p or client-server) I had just assumed the wifi adapter in the switch must be garbage for stability.

“If you have a s*** connection like out in Kansas somewhere..” Actually, Kansas City was the first US city to get Google Fiber back in like 2012. But yeaaa
"Calm down Linus Tech Tips" LOL 😁 I'm ded.
7:24 I'm seeing Mac OS on the left, and an Acer Predator G-Sync Monitor on the right. Please tell me you're not using a G-Sync monitor on a Mac.
Changing my MTU value helped a bit. There is a great guide to get a proper MTU number
I've always used a lan adapter with my Switch, I haven't noticed a different in the speed when I do connection tests, it's always been between 80-100mb/s download.
I also hate playing against people with terrible connections in 1 v 1 on Smash (as that's my preferred way to play) if the connection is bad, I usually just self destruct.
I literally only have trash online in smash there's no problem in splatoon Arms mario kart or any other online first party game
It's only in smash
THE ONE GAME WHERE IT MUSTNT HAPPEN
EXACTLY! after playing the Splatoon Demo for hours and hours and days and days im like... what a minute. I didn't lag not ONE TIME. NOT. AT. ALL. (Im gonna miss Splatoon since the demo ended rip.)
its just that they gotta fix smash because its super annoying. My internet is completely fast and fine so there shouldn't be a reason on why i need it in the first place. Because if i buy a lan adapter and it STILL lags? imma be fucking pissed.
@@Trizic_ yea I have 1 gig internet aswell
Also splatoon is 42 bucks that's a steal imo
I'm from Romania, so I will never need a LAN Adaptor =)) At least... I hope

I'm still idk, why N is so greasy and didn't placed rj45 right in the dock. This is ridiculous.
Not gonna lie. I'm one of those guys in Kansas. Sorry everyone. Btw I do have a lan adapter and I only lag roughly every 3 games.lol

I’m a Kanas boy as well. It isn’t very fun at times.
What's the problem for Nintendo in kansas?
There's no problem, it's just a joke that a person in Kansas will probably have bad internet cause they don't live in a city.
@@ThatLegitBeast kansas city missouri and Kansas city kansas have amazing wifi options and are a large city/suburb

I’m not happy with my connection because I don’t have WiFi!
Aye man I’m from Kansas and I got pretty good internet
I don't mind playing in slow motion every now and then. When u play one vs one like 100 games in sequence , a laggy game in slow no is a welcome change and honestly kind of fun. I like saving the replay and watching it in normal speed
Dedicated servers would not be expensive for fighting games, game servers are virtualized and a single server could host hundreds of games if done correctly.
no bluetooth no lan on it , switch is a unfinished product

yeah we can see that so much people bought it so fast. Now its gon take time for nintendo to bring out an updated system later on in the years which is a good thing. Were gon have an updated switch every 2-4 years. Like how the psp was. The switch will be the next psvita, not sucky, not just great, but games we can play online the best system to come out on handheld.
Your other video is gold. However, average users struggle to minimize interference that can affect connection. Thank you for the other video that was super informative, and thanks for this one I guess... for the dumb-dumbs.
I mean it doesn't matter how much you cut down on interference, adjust wifi channels, and place your switch in a perfect place, you'll still get a much lower ping and stable connection out of Ethernet. Ethernet is typically on the order of 0.8-1.3ms while Wireless AC can vary from 1.5-10ms over the course of a few packets. The only thing worse than Wifi is Powerline Ethernet which can be 2-3x the latency of WiFi if you have noisy home powerlines.
Edit: a kinda reliable source just to illustrate my point. It's a wireless N standard, but the AC standard didn't affect latency too much. Most tests you find will offer similar results if they've got it set up decently: linustechtips.com/main/topic/445640-the-powerline-is-low-latency-myth/
@@sniperfox47 This is true!
For Smash and my small group of gaming friends that do hectic 4-player matches in the Battle Arena, we understand how our wireless connections work and already have dozens of hours of seemingly lagless, near-flawless matches. Enjoying sessions that go hours without any apparent hiccups.
So while minimizing ping is very useful with ethernet, the wireless on the Switch is quite capable of providing a pristine experience.
@@SaintsXIV any tips on getting better connections? What's your speed averaging?
@@acooldude NAT B, ~50 Down, ~10 Up. Speeds aren't really super important since you really are only required to have 3D/1U (oof, haha), that stable ping time though is key. On your pc hit up command prompt and ping google for a while and see if there are any spikes in your connection (the ms time, as well as packet loss), (google how to command prompt ping test if need be). If the ms results are consistent, and low (lower the better), you should be in good shape, if there are spikes all over or even packet loss, something is wrong.
Common things that affect connection are walls (or the electronics in them, and no one is getting through solid concrete/brick), appliances, lamps, electrical/energy sources, so a clean path to your connection will help the most!
There are of course various settings on routers that can cause some issues with data passing through, as well as other devices on the network soaking up the bandwidth - but a good rule of thumb is if you can pull a solid, stable connection with low ping on ethernet, then your service should be capable of providing a near identical experience while gaming wireless on the Switch. Xbox/PS4/PC may not be so nice.
Variables are the worst when trying to determine what an actual cause is to connection issues. For ease, Ethernet it all day, but if you're willing to do a little bit of a fight, Wireless on the Switch is perfectly fine!

Local smash is the way to go for me
I own Splatoon 2 but prefer the single player portion of that so I don't need NOL there
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe plays Well from my couch with my friends/Wife
Really the only part of NOL that I may be missing out on is internet trades in Lets Go but then again who knows in Internet trading if you are getting Legit pokés
Not everyone is like me and keeps detailed family trees for their Pokémon breeding projects in gens that allow that for legitimacy proof.
Mainly I didn't feel the need to pay $20 for online when most of the time I prefer to have people sit on my couch with me

Cool but this isn't a universaly applicable approch. I would love to invite a bunch of real word freinds over but adults have to spend alot of time adulting.

Fight game players prefer wired connections because NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR WIFI IS, ITS STILL WIFI. Its going to have momentary hiccups no matter the speed. Ethernet cables remove this problem. There is nothing better than offline fighting games, but if you want to take them semi seriously and play online, USE AN ETHERNET CABLE. The other player gets the exact same lag spikes from your wifi as you do, no matter that anybody says. That is why online tournament organizers, like ESL, require you to use a wired connection. To emulate the offline experience as accurately as possible. Even then, there are small differences in what you can and cant do online in fighting games. Online strats a hella real.
I noticed that the more preferences you set for online battles, the more often you’ll get deceived;
More preferences means that the Switch will search as far as possible to choose an opponent sharing the same preferences (even though it doesn’t always do), meaning that the distance might just be too far for a stable connection.
On the other hand, when you turn the preferences off, you just get matched with the first awaiting player(s)
For my part, as long as there are stocks, it’s completely fine...
I try to disable objects sometimes but with them on is bearable when the connection is stable.
Moral: be tolerant and adapt to the fight
So after lots of lurking around and catching your videos randomly in my searches, I realized I had not been subscribed to your channel. Had to remedy that. Liked and subscribed. Really enjoy your style man and loved your editing on the katana shaving!
One very good reason for getting more wired adapters are if your in a large family in a neighborhood with a lot of other families. Since the wifi is constantly clouded even after manually changing your wifi channel for optimal performance it can still get hitches even with some of the better routers depending on your walls. Like at my house the wifi router is in the next room over but it still can't seem to be stable especially for pc games.
My LAN adapter makes a massive difference because my room (where I play my Switch) is barely within range of our wifi. I got the Pluggable brand, not the official Nintendo one, and it works just fine. I have one Ethernet cable that runs to my room, but I have my computer and my Switch that both need to be connected to the internet. It was for this reason that I bought a network switch. Now, both my devices have a wired internet connection that works great.
My WiFi absolutely sucks so this video was really helpful. Thanks my dude.
Look up NAT type connections. You had a type D connection in your first video witch is why you had a bad connection. NAT B is typical for wired connections and some wireless connections depending on several factors. NAT C is usually wireless that is blocked by some sort of wall or other enclossed cabinet. NAT A is when you come directly from your modem to a device skipping the router/switch. learned this the hard way years ago with my PS3. I ran wireless and the NAT type was C as soon as I wired in it became a NAT B and my speeds were better.
Good on you for correcting this. Some people don't even do that.
