Highlander hybrid inverter coolant change

  • With the help of a friend, I drained and refilled the inverter coolant on a 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. In this video I briefly explain the steps. In the video I mention using a number 10 allen key to remove the main coolant plug on the bottom of the hybrid transaxle. By 'number 10' I mean, 10mm. We used a 10mm hex drive socket on a socket wrench and a cheater bar to re-tighten it.
    The black tabs that hold the grill on are removed by using a flat head screwdriver to pry the center button-like part of the tab up and then prying/popping the whole tab off.
    The only other hand tool you will need is a pair of pliers.
    An IMPORTANT tip:
    When you are refilling the reservoir, leave the top valve on the radiator open, until fluid flows out of it. This allows for air to be released there. Then fill the reservoir to the top and turn the car on and off a few times, topping up after each time you turn it off. This is to refill to the normal level as air bleeds out of the system when you run the vehicle.
    Good luck!

    Nice, very informative, did you put car in maintenance mode while adding coolant so that engine continuously run without taking over by battery?

      Thanks, no I did it without running the vehicle when the plugs were removed. I think because of this I only got 3/4 of the fluid out, which I think was quite adequate for my purposes, given that the old fluid still looked very clean. No problems 10 months later.

    Unrelated question as my inverter radiator is damaged, does that look like something one can replace easily at home? The dealership wants $600+ for labor

      I don't have the vehicle anymore, so I can't say for sure, but I would guess that it would not be too difficult as it's in front of the main radiator and I don't think you would need to remove any other parts(beside maybe the horn or something) to get to it...

    Does coolant lose its heat transfer properties over time? Or just get dirty?

      @MusicConnoisseurian 2 роки тому +1

      loses its lubricant properties and becomes acidic and corrosive to seals and components.

    Curious as to why you did this? Was it just to make the video? I've never heard of this ever needing to be done on these vehicles.

      Yeah, it probably wasn't necessary, but it's recommended maintainance at 100,000 miles, so I figured better safe than sorry.

    Is the hybird inverter coolant system connected to the gas engine coolant system?

    • @artmatthew1
      @artmatthew1  3 роки тому

      No, they are separate. Each has its own radiator.

      Yeah, I'm pretty sure they both use the pink super long life coolant.

    Is it normal for the coolant reservoir to boil? Mine does but I'm not sure if its normal.

    • @artmatthew1
      @artmatthew1  4 роки тому

      Are you sure it's boiling? In mine it moves around a lot because its being circulated.
      I'd say no, though that it's not normal. Do you have this same car?

      @@artmatthew1 I have a 2006 Toyota Highlander, around 3:59-4:49 of your video, my car is doing the same thing. I may have used the wrong word but to me it looks like its boiling. I am planning to change my coolant too for the inverter using your guide pretty soon.
