When I learned that Anthony Padilla was one of the Smosh guys, it was like… learning that you’re dating a celebrity, or someone you knew was secretly an immortal vampire, or like the old hermit in the desert is actually a master wizard… or something like that. As described by Keith from TheTryGuys, MatPat has not only helped the YT community, he legitimized content creators in the creative space, and made the businesses (who otherwise would've never understand it) realize creators' influence. It's interesting how many of the original top youtube creators felt like they had to maintain a persona. It's really great to see them be themselves and grow into the confidence that they are enough without a persona.

    • @hamingnu6610
      @hamingnu6610 6 місяців тому +1

      Definitely. I think it was definitely exemplified by the Vine boom where, like them or not, you had a bunch of creators who came in because they had token personalities. I'm not saying their fans loved them for those archetypal or 'token' personalities, but they were able to capture an increasing audience because their 'thing' could be summed up in a few words, or in a 6-second video every week. The original UA-camrs didn't think they could compete because Viners had to inherently play around a much lower attention-span (and therefore quicker but more 'juicy' content) and a much more mobile-oriented environment, where one's 'relevance' and ability to stay on the platform with a consistent amount of clicks would've had a much shorter lifespan than a typical UA-camr.
      I'm not saying that's bad, what I'm saying is that - there would've been an advantage to doing that - that the original UA-camrs wouldn't have had from the get go. So, one of the things they could do to inhibit a quick shift into this totally different paradigm just to compete with the Viners was to use a single persona that they could bend and shape at will just to succeed. They could no longer just make a video they wanted to make on a saturday evening, telling their viewers about how their day went - they had to be a personality because a bunch of these creators from other platforms were coming in, already born with archetypal and bombastic personalities. A lot of these Viners had already streamlined what would come to be a much more clickable format, and the only way for the original UA-camrs to compete was to ditch the flexibility of old laid-back UA-cam, and to adopt the streamlining and content optimization that would have already been subconsciously well understood by the Viners - with the biggest part being that you now also had to completely optimize your persona as well just to stay relevant.
      But now that a lot of these people are well established and have gone years making a relatively stable living: they're no longer worried about making too many compromises just to stay 'relevant'. Sure, you still have to do a load of work to 'stay', but you no longer need to do much to keep up. There is no longer enough change happening on YT that warrants the entire present creatorbase to suddenly do an annual shift in what they want to do just to continue getting views, and thus easing your viewerbase to a much more genuine 'persona' is finally completely doable.

It would be cool one day to see Anthony spend the day with Ian, and they can reflect on how much they’ve both grown since early smosh days.

      Sports theory, maybe? He even mentioned sports guys being geeks too in this interview. I think science theory and stat theory would be higher on the list of possibilities. Having watched him over a huge portion of his career, knowing what he went to school for and his interests shown through his current channels.
      Then again sports fans are a possibly untapped audience. While I'm not saying sports fans don't have any overlap with his game, film, and food channel I think it'll just sweep those folks to add to the pile.

      I don't think it's a gender thing, as I've seen the exact same thing happen to men, both online and in real life. I think it's more of a "face of the channel" kind of thing. Kind of like how you most likely think of Notch when thinking about Minecraft, despite Jeb having done a lot of the modern work. Jeb is currently the lead developer of Minecraft, but Notch is still remembered by many to be the face of Minecraft. You get what I mean?

      @@TheStudioArchitect I do understand what you mean but it’s also a thing that general women have to live with; their husbands getting the attention/respect whilst they don’t. You do have a point but there is a gender thing also there.

    • @TheStudioArchitect
      @TheStudioArchitect Рік тому

      @@Lyddy-Draws I suppose you have a point. I'm a guy, so maybe it's simply that I've never experienced this. But, from all of the real life social situations I've been in where everyone is listening to the most intelligent guy in the room, it's always been, "Who's more popular?" from what I've seen. I've been ignored and talked over in favor of the girl/woman in the room many times.
      So, maybe I just don't live in the right place to see this happen, but from my observations, it's always been "Who sounds more assertive, and who seems to know more about what he or she is talking about?"
      And, although this last argument does not always work, this is, I'd say around 70% of the time, true.
      UA-cam, especially the Gaming genre of UA-cam, is a social space mostly dominated by men. And so, although I do think completely ignoring Steph was... well... an ignorant thing to do, it does make sense why it happened. Again, it was wrong, but it makes sense why it happened the way it did. This doesn't work here though, because, unlike most female "gamers." Steph is one of the few women who actually knows what the hell she's talking about when it comes to UA-cam and Games. Unlike most women who call themselves "gamers" for having a body cam while playing League of Legends, Steph is actually competent, and knows what she's talking about. So, they should not have ignored her. Unlike Pokimane, Amouranth, Squiddo, and most women on UA-cam and Twitch, Steph is worth listening to.
      But again, although it was wrong, I can see why it happened. Most women who call themselves "gamers" don't even know what the hell a keyboard is. So yeah.
      I myself would listen to a male gamer over a female one any day. And that isn't some kind of social barrier that needs to be broken down, it's just reason. Gaming is a hobby that is mostly dominated by men. And that isn't some kind of problem that needs to be fixed, it's just the way it is. Like Sports.
      So, although I wouldn't *completely* ignore a female "gamer," I am always going to watch, listen to, play with, and take advice from a male gamer first, since it's more likely he knows more than her.
      Not saying that ignoring Steph was right, as it wasn't, but I completely get why. For the same reason I'm more likely to listen to a woman about makeup, skincare, daily/nightly routines, and other things that most women seem to care about for some reason.
      These aren't bad stereotypes that need to be broken, these are just reasonable social expectations based off of which gender usually does what hobby. So, although ignoring Steph was wrong, absolutely, it makes sense. If the topic is gaming, sports, or electronics/machinery/engineering, I am always going to listen to the man in the room first. As these are primarily male dominated areas, and so therefore, I am going to listen to the men first.
      Likewise, if the topic is a primarily female dominated area, I am going to listen to the women first. Know what I mean?
      So, to end this reply off with how it started: Yes, ignoring Steph was wrong, absolutely. But I understand why it happened.

So please don’t invalidate what we women have to go through. Popularity is another thing and does exists as u said, but why feel the need to bring up your “credible observations” as a man???? You aren’t living as a women in this society. So be kind to those near you and be understanding. Especially if you are looking for a future mate. Put yourself in our shoes for a second.
      And second imagine not listening to someone because of their gender… it’s bold of you to assume they know less really. This just makes you more close minded. These are bad stereotypes :/
