Not a dog trainer, but I do want to try this to increase food drive. My current understanding is that resource guarding food gets created when the dog thinks there's competition for the resource. How do I know this won't create that? Is there any point where I should stop this? My dog has 0 history of resource guarding, but again, I'm not a trainer and don't want to accidentally create this. We have lots of rules and boundaries in place that are consistently reinforced in my home.
That is also my opinion about doing this kind of food drive. I feed mine the same quantity but before feeding time, i train him 5 to 10 minutes from the meal quantity, and what is left after the training is his meal, usually 80% of the whole meal remains after training, and he is really food driven when training. Hope this helps even if its an year later.
Just did this downtown-LOVED it!!!! Another fun session to add to the toolbox!🙌🏼 What I love most about Patreon is that, since you reveal your philosophies, and how to put it all together, I find I can think on my feet now-and I know what to do in all sorts of situations. THANK YOU Andy!!!
Hey Andy people loved the way you thought your answer about the cane corso that I asked. You should have been a high school teacher! Thanks for your videos!!!
I did this with my Doberman for two months, he went from not finishing his food to biting my fingers off. I don't use raw, he goes bunkers for kibble 👍 knows there's nothing else to eat 😁 luring is so much more fun now,
This is literally brilliant. I have a 5.5 yr old beagle that is starting to show aggressive behaviors and I am trying to work through it with him but he is not food motivated. Such a picky eater. But he does love some salmon.. needless to say.. I will be trying this so soon as tomorrow. THANK you!
I believe this is something I was looking for. I can train my dog in the backyard with treats fine but if I go out to the park or walking she has no interest in treats.
Will there ever come a time when you teach one marker to mean come to you for the reward and another marker to mean get the reward that’s away from you?
Great question. I wouldn’t consider this interaction ‘exercise’ and don’t believe bloat is possible as a result of this. But if somebody is worried about it I have no problem with them not doing it 🙏🏼
I hand feed all my dogs meals for training and am looking for ways to build that drive. Throughout his training he would eat his days worth of food at one meal when he would crate for the night so that he would more readily treat during the day for public access work. he he’s a service dog and everything we teach is restraint around food. Do you think this method would be appropriate for him? I recently switched to raw and he obviously enjoys it more than kibble but he’s never been a gobbler and slows down to slowly lick and saver the food when I lure him as suppose to attacking it and moving quickly towards it like I’m seeing here
Hi Andy, I'm always struggling to build food drive. He feels meh about his kibble even though we feed during training, and if I use any high value cheese or meat, he will then refuse to eat his kibble. He's prone to being underweight and is always on the verge of TOO skinny (4-5 ribs always slightly visible. I can't feed raw because where I live it is a) tropical climate and food unsafe to play with raw meat outside, b) there are no raw suppliers. I feed Pro Plan salmon because he's allergic to chicken. I guess stick to 100% kibble and build frustration??
Seeing ribs absolutely does not mean a dog is underweight. Pro plan is not a good kibble to feed, I’d switch for sure and put the dog on a significant diet 👍🏻
I think you might just have given me the right correction to my training... bc my malinois has food Drive but sometimes she doesn't care... but goes for toys. But then the Drive is tooo high 😂 So thank you soo much ! my Trainer kinda forgot this lesson 😅 but she goes for the sleeve like a champ. 🥰 And sometimes I train too long. But I stopped that some weeks ago. (And everybody tells me she has got to gain weight. She is healthy And muscular but skinny. So that's not the problem.)
Andy. My 10 month dutch shepherd is a psycho chewer and if I let him without anything to chew on during the night he chews on rocks, the wall, the floor. He alredy broke and worn some teeth. What are rhe thing you recomend letting him have to chew on without supervision during the night. Thanks!
Hi I have a 6 months old boxer the first time I tried this was very successful. Do I have to do this with all his meal during the day? And when I stop with it? Thank you
Im not just delivering room service! Love it! Great video, makes perfect sense, dogs love a challenge, it makes it fun! This is so contrary to the stuff I was originally taught and had to learn the hard way that I was ruining my dogs food drive! Making them sit for their food, and even worse making the dog look at me instead of the food and then rewarding that! What a mistake that was! Possibly a 4th killer of food drive is if a dog is rewarded for not going after the food, and only given to them if they are quiet and sit still, thats definitely a killer of food drive and will ruin your ability to lure the dog! (Unless your dog has insane food drive to begin with it would probably take a lot more than that but you get the idea!) Also if your dog or puppy has low food drive might have been hit or hurt for taking food at some point and learned that he better not take it, you might not know whats happened to the pup before you got him. Another dog in the household could even have tried to bite his head off for taking food. I could see that leading him to become a dog with low food drive. He might eat if a bowl is in front of him but be difficult to lure because hes afraid to go after it. Just a couple ideas to think about in addition to Andys awesome video!
I'm curious as a new listener to your channel, will this make my dog protective of her food? I have a 1 1/2 year old ridge back pit mix but I also have a 3 yr old daughter. My dog is decently trained for sure however more physical praise driven currently. Should I stick to motivation by physical praise? Or should I try this approach and put all her food through my hands? Thanks for advice!
I would also like to say she sees the vet and she is healthy however she still typically only chooses to eat once a day in the evening...thoughts on this? I exercise her daily she is def not over weight she's lean trim and muscular. She's been like this since I got her at 9 weeks old
@@AndyKrueger hey man, thank you for taking the time to respond! I very much appreciate it! I'll get back to you after a few days of trying this and let you know my results!!
Hi I love your training videos. I need HELP PLEASE! My dog gets scared of loud noises on our walks and I have no idea how to help her. Every loud noise makes her stop listening to me.
You could try desensitization. Find audio of the sound and play it really low at a level that the dog is comfortable with. Only increase volume by small amounts when she is 100% ready. You don’t want the dog to react. Note: some dogs are extremely anxious and it’s a temperament/genetic issue versus something loud scaring them as a pup; if temperament, only so much you can do. Best of luck. Not a professional trainer. More info online if you Google.
Andy love your work - my 9 month old Rotti has huge food drive. When training with treats she now nips (gently) at my fingers thinking I have treats. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I’ve been building my dogs food drive for a couple of days now she’s only 3 months doing extremely well but one problem I have that I can’t seem to solve is after a some training and after a positive correction or any type of correction she will start denying the food and turning her head when I try and offer the food what do I do then?
Hey Andy! How do you keep the dog from tearing up your fingers when they get so excited for food? Any time I get them excited and try to hand feed they seem to have no regard for my own fingers and hands while they eat. Thanks!
Just a quick question: I was always taught in our trainer educations to bring ‘peace’ around mealtimes, to prevent bloat (I own Giant Schnauzers who are for example prone to this). What’s your view on this, related to your technique?
I understand what you’re saying because I have large breeds with big chest and I wouldn’t want them rolling around and pushing and barking and going crazy for the food but that’s just me my dogs eat in a quiet area
@@AndyKrueger well, I do something very similar to what you do with food but I use a ball on a rope or a tug rope But only after an hour before or after eating My boy is very thin at the waist and very large chested
I absolutely love your training videos; but I cannot agree with you on the raw food. (yes it stimulates motivation but it carries some health risks.) Just saw a dog two days ago that has had 2 weeks of diarrhea after eating one batch of raw food. Two other dogs in the house did not eat the raw food and have no diarrhea. I'll keep you posted on how the tests come back. Treating for presumptive campylobacter as it is more common than salmonella-- R. Ruble, DVM ---- like I said ABSOLUTELY love the training videos.
Wondering what the test results were? I understand your point - I have an immunity issue & a parrot so may never do raw. Of course, your source & how you handle the food is also very important - that said even kibble has caused digestive issues. Scientifically, I think raw has not been proven better generally speaking, correct? Thanks
Don’t find it strange at all. Read the comments & people say it worked. Andy has taken dogs to world level, unless you have done better, you might want to at least give it a try first. 🤷♀️
Hey Andy, when i tease my dog with a toy and he is tied or when i throw the toy and hold him on his collar he doesn't pulling for the toy and yenking on the leash. He stays calm and keep watching the toy and when i release him he goes for his toy. How can i build his energy and pulling drive for a prey?
You need to put 1% back pressure, so little he hardly notices. Use raw food, no toys for this. Make sure he’s HUNGRY! Increase back pressure by 1% each session. This will take time 🙏🏼
Could the fear be from another dog in the house that shows aggression towards the dog that won’t eat? She used to be food motivated but since my gfs pitbull moved in she’s a little fearful to take food. I’m going to try this away from the pit. Thank you

Love your videos, thinking about joining highest tier on patreon. Will it help me also with protection dog training? Thanks
I believe it will, yes 🙏🏼
Andy, why do you recommend the 2.25mm prong over the bigger ones?
I find dogs are more sensitive to the thinner prongs. The thicker ones, 3mm and above, you have to apply more pressure.
