I think I'm one of the 50 people who saw Lebowski in the theater. I was already really into the Coen brothers at the time. It was kind of shocking to see all these people "discover" the movie 10 years later.

I did not know The Thing was a flop. That does explain how I didn't see in the 80s and I hadn't even hearx of it. It wasn't until 1996 that I saw it on VHS for the first time. My cousin that was into movies had never seen it.

As a thirteen year old kid, I was fortunate to see The Thing in the movie theatre back in 1982. I loved it! Went back to see it again about three weeks later at the same theatre. I honestly was oblivious to any of the criticism at the time and had no idea it wasn’t performing well at the box office. Not until years later. I just loved it as a great scary creature movie. So glad it has the recognition today still.

What spurred my curiosity on the topic was 20 yrs ago. I was listening to the dir commentary of the thing & Carpenter explained the the circumstances around why his film flopped. It was basically because when the thing was released theatrically, it went head to head with e.t. and got buried. Every one prefered the friendly alien to the evil one. Originally.

What an amazing list of movies! I love every single one of them. Time always makes a difference when it comes to art appreciation. We, as a society, don't let things set long enough in this digital age and it is kinda sad. That's why I only watch movies in the theater or on DVD and champion the great ones.

But, personally, I am a huge fan of director Mike Flanagan and Dr. Sleep is the project of his that hit me the deepest. Wasn't prepared for the story to go as hard into addiction as it did. Grindhouse-it was a fun idea but I believe the running time could be one factor why it flop. grindhouse was extremely created. I have planet terror on blu ray. don't have death proof yet but will get it sometime in the future. plus, I have the first Mechette movie.
I believe one the reasons why Mulhollend Drive flop is that movie not only weird but I think lesbians scenes (spoiler) may have turn many people off despite they're pretty small scenes.
Fight Club started strong, get crazy in the middle, and went straight to weird as heck in the third act.
Shawshank is a good movie. I think this was one those Oscar contender movie that hardly people watch.
hard to believe wonderful life was a flop in theaters and later ending up being shown on tv every Christmas time. unbelievable. it also been ripped off many times too
The Things wasn't your typical Alien movie. it had a horror suspense vibe to it. I guess two thing that cause some people to hate it. the gore was over the top at the later half of the movie and slow pacing.
I believe the first Austin Powers movie did poorly in theaters but home video saved it obscurity.

as someone who reads or listens to books constantly - and someone who writes, I feel like if you ever read a book first, the movie will never live up to expectations because you are going to form your own images of everything in the book based on the descriptions in the book and everyone's imagination is different -so if it doesn tmatch what we imagined, it will never "get there" in our opinions lol....it is also impossible to carry the details and every nook and cranny of the stories froma book, into a movie due to the nature of movies...I try to seperate them in my mind but it is hard!
