    I had a 2017 1200 Multi Enduro, and basically loved it for long distance touring. Eventually, the lack of wind protection, noise from the valve train, and seat height convinced me to trade it. From what I have read and seen in comparisons like this, Ducati has checked off all my boxes for improvement. Fuel consumption is the only down side I see, but I can live with that. I am 71-years young, and stopping more often for fuel could be a good thing. 170 HP, and drop dead good looks are game changers for me. Most of the BMW's I have ridden felt top heavy to me compared to a Multistrada.

    I love my 2019 R1250 GS HP! In 2019 my 20 year old R1100 GS Speedometer needle fell off at 189,000 miles! I decided it was a sign from GOD. I found the new one in Red White and Blue! I went from 86 HP to 134 at 65 years old, and I like it!
    I still have the 1999 too! They are the best motorcycles I've ever had!!!

    I think it will largely depend on what type of rider you are. If you're an ex sportsbike rider then the Ducati will probably suit you better, but the more stable on the brakes, torquier engine shaft drive and better fuel consumption of the GS will suit far more riders in the real world especially if they carry a pillion.

      Ducati's a good bike if you love to do your own maintenance and know mechanics well or would like to get screwed by a dealer but I think most bikes these days are like that to a certain extent me personally I hate doing maintenance on a bike I like my energy going elsewhere so I like the BMW with the shaft driven instead of a stupid chain. Oil changes are easy on naked bikes people got to think about these things before they purchase a bike.

    I got both in the past, the models from 2013 2014 so less refined: the GS is perfection and never makes a false step, basically you can go on top the world and have also fun. The Multistrada, is just a fury, you just wanna lean and cornering is a joy. Now I ride an old timer Ktm 990 adventure.

    I just went to purchase a new adventure bike. I narrowed it down to the Ducati Multistrada and the R1250GS. Honestly, after a lengthy test ride, it was a no brainer. I chose the BMW. I wanted desperately to like the Ducati better, but it put out a lot of heat on my legs/crotch, notchy shifter, an inferior windscreen, and a rougher ride. But I did prefer the looks of the Multistrada. I purchased the BMW today. I'm very happy with the decision.

    I've had the GSA and now have 1200 Ducati Multistrada Enduro. I found the GSA to be the better for off-road, but the Ducati is not far behind.
    What I like the best is that I do lots of off-road (50,000 kms/year), and to do that you have to do lots of on-road to get there. GSA is just a little boring for me on-road but the Ducati makes me have a permanent smile.
    I will be looking at both of these models but I'm leaning towards the Ducati. It's the best bike I have ever owned and I can't remember how many bikes I have had.

Ever paid a manifold as the exhaust flap at a BMW or Ducati 1260 has stopped working? I have never been interested in big adventure bikes thinking they are big clumsy things. OOOO how very wrong I have been. Took the ducati V4 multistrda out for a test ride, bloody hell what a bike!!! (admittedly this was not my intention I was aiming for the panigale) As soon as it is moving it feels light and lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. The handling is superb and it can properly hunker down in the corners. The power delivery is smooth not snatchy and it is most definitely quick.

    I just purchased a 2020 Multistrada 1260S after riding the V4 and the BMW GS. Why? I love the twin and the styling of the last gen Ducati. Plus it was the only 2020 left in the showroom and I got a great deal. I know the valve maintenance is expensive but what the hell - if I'm going to drop this much on either of these variations what does it matter? The main thing for me is that I'm excited to get on the bike every day. Love the styling. The majority of my time is spent commuting so it gives me an all in one bike that can move into mild off road functionality - although I'd probably cry if I dropped it on some rocks.

    The Multistrada is very tempting as it fits like an italien suit made to measure. However, the 4 cylinders and the power come with a price. And this price is fuel consumption. I am in the market for a touring bike which is why I want one with reasonable consuption such as the 1250 GS.

    • @roadglide
      @roadglide 3 роки тому +3

      And the overall fit and finish of the Ducati IMHO is poor, with shit plastic panniers, attachment points and lots of plastic. The windscreen pistol style adjustment is cheap feeling and not a solid dentent when set, the little tank storage lid is very thin and flimsy and did not click closed or open with a positive feel. The Ducati is merely an adventure bike for the street. That’s fine, but call it what it is. No comparison with BMW. None.

      I don’t think that the difference in fuel consumption on the v-twin vs the v4 is that significant to even mention it. Ive watched fifty Multi v4 reviews and none of them mentioned increased fuel consumption compared to the v-twin models. Old Multi 1260cc vs new Multi 1200cc . Even if the number of cylinders is more it does does not mean it will burn more fuel. V4 has 4 smaller cylinders and the twin has two large. Your statement that the v4 will burn more fuel because it has more cylinders has no merit. On top of that you say the 1250GS is more economical is also wrong, the bile has 1250cc engine and its a heavier bike! 😂

I've had some issues with one of the GS's but major probs in 2017 with my last Multi. In the first 3 months of ownership I had 1 fuel sender unit, a new ECU, 2 x clutch slave cylinders and a third one on it's way out! new exhaust system, new TFT screen, front discs and constant Red engine warning light, which they couldn't fix, so it was returned to the dealer!! I love riding the Multi's but at that price I expect reliability. it's alright throwing tech at a bike but until it's more reliable i'll steer clear. All of these bikes are great in their own way depending on what your riding style and purpose looks like.
    If you tour a week or longer at a time while covering thousands of miles mostly on highways and secondary back country roads with minimal dirt with a bike loaded up like an old miner's mule, then GS Adventure is your bike! Also if you're like me a 6' or taller and 250 lbs or heavier, again GS Adventure is your bike.
    If you and your riding style doesn't fit the above description than you'll be really happy with a GS too. Especially with their price!
    If you're in good physical shape, agile (young or old), speed demon on the road, aggressive riding style then Ducati could be your choice.
    Just to let you know that GS/A models selling new or used as hot cakes right now (Winter of 2022) and especially GSA models are selling even before dealerships could put them on the sales floor!
    Most dealerships have a waiting list with deposits paid to them for their upcoming stock of GSA models while there are many Ducati MS models sitting on the dealership floors. That tells you the desirability regarding this bikes. GSA models are very hard to find anywhere, especially Triple Black version...
    So as a second hand market value and ease of selling after a while is your concern, then GS models will be the right choice for you.

Just more of a suggestions I guess for the next time you do a comparison vid like this.

    BMW, at least in the US, has a stop sale on bikes with the Hayes brake calipers. There’s a fix in the works, but it’s killing the dealers with leftover 2020 stock that they can’t sell. BMW will eventually put on Brembo calipers and hopefully soon for their dealers. Looks like Ducati has BMW on the tech side, but maybe BMW has the reliability with a proven design. Posted from a R1200GS Rallye owner...with Brembo brakes.😀

    One issue not mentioned in your comparison is the fuel consumption. I know it's not a big deal for many, but if you are doing high mileages, the BMW is likely to be 25% more fuel efficient, which will be noticeable both in terms of range and cost.

    Awesome review Bob! I’m still not entirely convinced on the adaptive cruise control on a bike. I do however love it on my cars and wouldn’t buy another car without it! Call me a bit old fashioned when it comes to two wheels as I remember when ABS first became available on some bikes in the very early 90’s. Wasn’t a fan of it then however with today’s tech I possibly wouldn’t want a bike without it. I’ll just need to test ride both, back to back to make my own mind up! The BIG drawback of the Multistrada is the size of fuel tank (i.e., Range}. You only get about 200 miles on a tank of gas with the Multistrada; whereas, I have been getting over 300 miles on my BMW GSA. Long range is absolutely critical for me since I ride all over the US. You can go on backroads in Texas and not see a gas station for over 200 miles. I plan a trip to Alaska from South Florida this summer. The low range on the MS is basically preventing me from even considering a MS on that trip. Without a large tank option, it makes the MS a non-starter. Finally, I have many motorcycles - and would love to acquire the new MS V4 for performance, etc ...(selling the BMW and replacing with MS V4, but now I see that is not an option.

    Do you need 170+bhp in an adventure bike, or is it just a fast upright tourer trying to pass itself off as one. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful but who's going to be fully trusting in an italian thoroughbred. ACC is starting to turn up on many new bikes and I would be interested to see how well it works on a bike. Anyone who's used it in a car will know how fast poo can leave your body when a rep without warning dumps his car right into the gap between you and the car infront or the ACC picks up a car in the next lane and go's into collision avoidance and slams everything on without warning. In a car it shits you up, on a bike, well I can see it spitting you off if you're not ready for it.

      @@JJAhern It’s not the wheels that make the bike an adventure. Will the engine run on poor fuel?
      I understand what you’re trying to say. ADV’s range from 250 4 strokes to 1290 adventure R’s. What is considered an adventure differs from one person to the next. As I see it, Ducati took a road-based platform, put spoke wheels on it, tuned the suspension and modified the traction control. They will sell it as an adventure knowing it’s going to ride tar 95% of the time. I don’t believe it can compete with purpose build offerings like the R1200GS or 1290 Adventure R in an off-road environment

    The new Multistrada does look very nice and will no doubt perform very well, but for what these bikes are intended, I simply would not consider anything chain driven. I've had chain and shaft drive bikes and used both for long distance touring and no question in my mind. HAS to be shaft and in this comparison, that makes it the GS. Which also happens to be a great bike, so no loss there.

    • @eddale5557
      @eddale5557 2 роки тому

      So you think the shaft is better? i have used a chain driven mc for 20 years and have never had any issues with the chain and the shaft if it get broken it will cost a fortune to replace and it can't be repaired in a tour off nowhere if some goes wrong, chain can easly be fixed not a chaft, also a chain driven mc is lighter.

    • @UKenGB
      @UKenGB 2 роки тому

      @@eddale5557 I have never heard of a shaft 'breaking', but I've been riding motorcycles now for over 50 years and I'm fed up with adjusting and lubricating chains and always having to clean the entire back of the bike which gets covered in filth due to 'fling' of lubricant from the chain. Yes lubes are better now than they were, but I have bikes with chain and some with shaft and I've had bikes with belt drive and it is an indisputable fact that the back end of a chain drive bike gets dirty in a way the others do not.
      I'm fully aware that a chain is more efficient and makes sense for racing etc, but I no longer want anything to do with them. Well, I do still have some chain drive bikes, but I wouldn't consider another one for the aforementioned reasons and certainly not for any long distance touring where there's no question a chain represents a far greater maintenance requirement and potential source of failure than a shaft.
      I know others have no problem dealing with the issues a chain brings, but not for me, not on an 'adventure' bike like the Multistrada and GS etc. There is simply no way I'd contemplate a world tour having to rely on a chain.
