    There's something absolutely magical about the sound of those Strymon pedals. To my ears, this one's not even close. The Mooer is a quite capable reverb, surprisingly so in fact, but the Strymon is just amazing...

    In the Shimverb's defense, a lot of my gear choice comes down to budget in the end. I think the Shimverb sounds okay and would probably be sufficient for all but fulltime professional guitarists.

    There's an obvious point were the Strymon leaves the Mooer behind, but hey-oh, Two more dials, One more toggle, One extra switch and stereo ins & outs, not to mentions a stack of dosh more. Bang for buck has to be Mooer because it's smaller, cheaper, easier to use and still covers off the most important aspects of what most guitarist need this effect for.

  • @mattsnyder4754

    The actual "reverbs" at play here aren't terribly far apart (sans a few funky artifacts in the Mooers shimmer). But the Strymon is absolutely miles ahead in preserving the actual guitar tone.

    So I bought the Shimverb years ago after recording a record where we used mainly the Bluesky. I wanted to replicate That shimmer effect.
    In all honesty, I use the Shimverb all the time. Love it actually. Live it holds up. There's a certain character to it. I think a lot of people get a bit caught up on the fact that the price difference is so drastic. By all means this doesn't mean that the Mooer isnt as good as the Bigsky.

    'David' hasnt done too bad until now. But the BlueSky is one of, if not the, best all around reverb pedals of all time. Also, they definitely have the correct man for this job. Clean, full, and beautiful playing as always Pete.

    I feel like I've been guilty of ignoring reverb pedals. I always thought they were kind of pointless and that reverb wasn't really a desired effect. I just purchased my first reverb pedal last week and I absolutely love it. Both of these are great too but I think I'll go with the Blue Sky because of the extra options. Great video!!!

It was only when I watched you switch back and forth through pedals again that I started hearing a difference

    I would suggest leaving the camera on the pedals always on the screen, in a small square at the corner or something like that. Everytime it shows the pedals (at least in the beginning, as I have not finished watching the whole video yet), I have to pause the video to see the exact settings, because it's too fast. Please, either focus mainly in the pedals view or make it possible to see the pedals continuously throughout the video.
    Other than that, great videos and series!

    The Strymon reverbs and the Neuenaber Wet reverb are on a level above everyone else. They have some special magic going on that gives them this gorgeous lush other worldly sound which is most of all musical and not metallic and thin sounding like cheaper reverbs. My feeling has always been that reverb is the one effect you should never cheap out on. Top class reverbs are just SO much better than cheaper ones that it's very noticeable.

    Another good example of how true spring reverb is it's own thing that needs a real spring. It's laughable how crappy that digital units emulate the spring thing. Aside from that, both of these delays are comparable to my ears. I closed my eyes and was often surprised that I guessed wrong for which one was on. The reality is that the same ambience comes through for both pedals, i.e. a shimmery, swelling type of reverb. Good demo, and I really like this series.

  • @johnborrelli3083
    @johnborrelli3083 2 роки тому +1

    The true integrity of the Shimverb, lies within how you use it. I use it to add ambience to my Mooer Reecho. I don't need an expensive verb for that. Placed after the Reecho is actually quite pleasing and gets the job done. Have since been a fan of the Mooer pedals. There's another demo on UA-cam that specifically uses Mooer pedals and I think you'd be hard pressed to tell whether the guitarist is using Mooer vs expensive pedals.

  • @timothycremer3585

    The Mooer was supplied new without any operating or safety instructions. There was no power supply provided with the product. Therefore, unless you have a pedal board with multi supply system or a spare psu lying around of the correct type then you have to locate and purchase a psu to be able to use the product. This increases the cost and makes the pedal less cost effective. This also raises the question whether the device is fit for purpose and whether the description states clearly that no psu is supplied.

    I thought the BlueSky was better (as it seems most of the other viewers did as well, based on the comments) but I thought the Shimverb was very respectable, and when you look at the difference in price, to me, the Shimverb is clearly the better value. Not all of are able or want to invest hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars into a pedal collection, and being able to get a good sound out of a pedal that's around $100 (or less on the used market) -- compared to over $300 for the BlueSky -- can make it a good choice for a player trying not to break the bank.

    I like Pete's playing style for this kind of demo with any equipment. You get a good range of soft and gentle up through hard enough to drive the equipment. In may cases to much shredding will give the wrong opinion of the equipment. I will admit if the equipment is to push the system to the limit then Shredders are the Demo folks for that gear. Great demo Pete, How about using an A B switch for the future on these kind of demos please.

Plus with the size of I have it velco'd to the back ledge of my amp,running through fx loop so doesn't take up any space on small pedal board. I only use a couple of effects so does me fine. Well worth coming back to these reviews after a few months to see if ones opinion changes at all. In this case, the answer is definitely `no`. Mooer make some very good pedals that are brilliant value for money .... but the Shimverb isn`t one of them. ( In my opinion of course. ) What`s the point of a shimmer reverb if the shimmer is decidedly poor - even unpleasant sounding ? OK, the Bluesky is what, four times the price ? BUT the shimmer sounds beautiful. The shimmer on the Neunaber Immerse is also gorgeous. Sometimes you definitely get what you pay for I guess.

  • @digiscream

    Yep...the BlueSky wins for me, purely because the shimmer is a proper octave as opposed to the Shimverb which - inexplicably - is a 5th higher instead, meaning it's out of tune half the time. Extremely odd decision.
    Funnily enough, the shimmer on the Zoom MS70CDR is *much* better. In fact, all of the reverbs (and delays) on there are better, to the point where it really gives the big boys a run for their money.

    To be fair Mooer do a two switch reverb that is a much closer match for a comparison. A couple of mins Googling and what I think was called the Skyverb pro has had a name change to reverie reverb. I dunno if it's any good but its much closer in features to the Strymon and less than half the price.

    God knows why mooer did this but on the shimverb the shimmer setting is like a 5th above (i think a 5th) but on the strymon its a straight octave, sounds much more pleasing to the ear

    The Moore is very nice sounding. I might buy one now. The big sky is too polished sounding for my taste. I keep wanting to like it but I just dont. To each their own!

    Just from listening to a few minutes of playing, I can safely assume that the main source of price difference in these two pedals is the features. I have no issue with this since it makes economic sense.

  • @panosskentzos

    I used to have the Shimverb, its Room setting is pretty good but the other 2 modes are seriously bad, they have a not well-dialed fixed predelay and make every guitar sound almost the same. Generally screams digital in a bad way, especially when turning up the decay and tone, thus hearing more clearly the wet signal.
    I've been using it for rehearsals (for about 1,5 month) and one Demo recording, then sold it immediately. I'd recommend Digitech for that price, I think it's even cheaper.

    Great video, I own a 'Shimverb' and although this highlights where your extra money goes if you go for another brand it does all I need it to. It would be good to see more MOOER comparisons with the models they apparently 'clone', 'Ana-echo' VS. 'DM2', 'Green Mile' VS. 'TS' and so on.

  • @gwalchmai21
    @gwalchmai21 8 років тому

    Yeah, it's obvious what you're getting when you dish out for the Strymon...the Mooer might have some decent sounds for a mini pedal on a budget, but aside from all the extra control on the Strymon, the algorithms are soooooo much more complex and the bloom is so much bigger...dang. The poor Mooer's got far less utility; if you need a mini verb, just get a TC HoF mini and load it with exactly the sound you want--done.

    I would like to know what Pete thought of both pedals as a player. Tone is subjective, but is a reverb pedal worth spending $299.00 USD on?

  • @work_n_roll
    @work_n_roll 5 років тому +2

    cheap pedals cut lows, and lower mids, so you can hear it when mooer in action. When you listen it on gain it's more obvious. Btw mooer is a great cheap pedal

    I think where the mooer fatally falls down is on the spring, which to my ear sounds very unnatural to me. The bluesky for me pulls out the goods here to be quite representative of actual spring units. The fifth thing on the Mooer shimmer is unfortunately painful to say the least.

    • @themattitude
      @themattitude 8 років тому

      nnnownow Agreed. I bought one a while ago purely to use with a small practice amp, which I got at the same time, that didn't have reverb. I fell victim to the old "it sounded alright in the shop" syndrome. After a while the flaws in the spring emulation began to bug me. Once I started to notice the way it affected the dry through tone too I had to replace it, with a HOF mini. The room is much better, I'm just not a fan of room reverb, and the shimmer is totally fine for occasional use.

    This one was not even close. Mooer sounds Metallic (on the reverb tails). I love their E-Lady and Trelicopter, but for Reverb, the Blue Sky is far superior. (you get, what you pay for)

      David vs Goliath? No. You are wrong, Goliath just killed Solomon the Son of David. Here's the real David. Make a comparison with that Strymon Bluesky (Goliath) and this Mooer Shimver Pro

  • @kingstumble
    @kingstumble 8 років тому

    Of course the Strymon is better but the question you have to ask yourself is,is it worth five times the price of the Mooer? And remember the difference will be much less pronounced in a mix.Which would I choose? Neither---I don't like reverb!

    I have the shimverb and it eats a noticeable amount of tone when its engaged (through the loop, haven't really tried it in front) Ive had the same problem on 3 different amps now. I'd stay away from it personally

    I think Skyverb vs Bluesky would have been more appropriate. Skyverb seems to sound closer to the bluesky than the shimverb does.
