Now I want this as well. 1st it was a pressure canner. I now have and use 2. 2nd it was the dehydrator. My airfryer has a dehydrate setting that goes all the way down to 90 AND I bought a dehydrator. My husband is going to bang his head on a brivk wall if a freeze dryer shows up in the mail. 🤷🏾♀️😏
LOL! Love it!
@@RoseRedHomestead Ah...! Same process here except I am almost ready for the freeze dryer
I have been looking at for the past several months. I usually like to wait a while before deciding . If I am still wanting it much later then it is usually a good decision. I hope they are still available when I am ready...I need to know where it will be placed first. I can’t move it easily as it weighs approx 100 lbs.
I am happy for you.
Lol
Lol. Send him on an errand on delivery date. 😉
😄 ya, my husband is still banging his head on the wall. The best part is, they now offer lay-a-way for a freeze dryer.
If I could like this video a thousand times I would! Oh I wish I had a freeze dryer!
Truly grateful to find you
We are glad you found us as well!
Oh what a joy to have on your shelf. This is the first “fun” food I have seen done in the freeze dryer. What a delight to have if you were stranded without electricity etc. Having the nutrient dense foods is a must but the fun stuff would brighten up your day. So sorry that the chuck of ice cream disappeared on you😍. Thank you for another wonderful video.
You are very welcome!
I remember the space food from the 60s. There was ice cream, tang, and the tubes that you squeezed out
I remember that as well. And here we are again!
It's nice to have sweets and treats in the pantry!
It really is!
At first, I didn't think a freeze dryer would be a good idea for me. However, after seeing your success and hearing your excellent explanations, I have changed my mind! Well Done Videos!
Thank you. We are really enjoying ours and plan to use it to really supplement our food storage.
Dr Cantrell you have amazed me again! Great video. 🌹
Thank you so much 😀. And feel free to call me Pam!
Oh wow! This video was so much fun! Thank you so much for sharing this one. You both are a wonderful couple to spend so much time sharing these things. I have been looking at this freeze dryer for several months now. I almost wish I could go in with a friend on one; share the cost, share the goods, etc. But as it is, I’m just sitting here watching and living by vicariously through people like you. And I’m very thankful for it. Thanks again. ❤️🤗 ~~Sharon
Glad you enjoyed it! I had freeze dryer envy for about five years before we decided to move forward with it. But it has been so worth the wait!
I am in Awe watching this, it’s amazing what you can do. Thank You So Much for sharing, I truly enjoyed the video. Blessings ✝️💟
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
I can not express how grateful I am to have found your videos to help make sure I am processing for safely. Plus all the fun ideas you have are such a bonus. Thank you
WOW…that ice cream AMAZES ME!!! How FUN!!! 💕🌸💕
Very nice! I can't even imagine how the ice cream tastes without being cold and wet. Totally amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
It's a crunchy sweet little bite. It's a whole new thing freeze dried. Lol
I used to get this at the Smithsonian when i was little. It was called astronaut ice cream. Now you can find it at many camping stores if you want to try it. It's a whole different thing. Very creamy, then it just melts right in the mouth. I love it. ❤️
I have heard of people freeze drying all sorts of candy in their machines, but I didn’t dare mention it, with all the serious talk of veggies and such. So glad to see you having fun with the freeze dryer and making snacks! Looks so delicious. Kinda weird to hear ice cream crunch like that but I’m sure it’s delish!
LOL...Yes, we do love our snacks as well. And I can tell you that Fat Boy ice cream sandwiches are the BEST freeze dried. Thanks for your comments.
Wow! What a treat to have on the shelf.
We think so too.
Good Morning Y'all ! I got a huge craving for ice cream now! That freeze dryer is amazing ! Thanks for sharing
LOL! It is a lot of fun and very nice to have alternative options for food preservation. BTW--The PO was closed the other day when Jim went into town to mail your seeds. We are camping in Moab and plan to take it to the PO this morning, so it will arrive a little later than planned.
@@RoseRedHomestead Thank you so much! Y'all enjoy camping !
I have never seen this done before, oh my goodness what a great machine, I couldn't resist, and it would never get to the storage room lol. 😂
I am pretty sure when you freeze dry ice cream, the process sucks all the fat and calories out of it. So its all good. Great video Pam and Jim.
Oh! Oh! Yes! Of course they do! Thank you for that very valuable info!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Heh, that's not even close to being true, but as far as justifications go is as good as any!
If that's the case why did you bother watching the video? What's worse is you never even tried it! To make a snarky remark is disrespectful!
Oh
Now I want a Freeze dryer
Wow
They seemed Delicious
Thank you for video
Linda in Ct
Linda: Let us know the results and thanks. Jim
Wow that was a fun watch.. very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it!
Way cool! I have not done a fun project in my freeze drier. Next trip to Sam's Club and I'll pick up some candy and ice cream sandwiches. Thanks for a fun video. I just learned this week that the USDA has approved lemon and lime curd for water bath canning. I'd love to see you do a video some day.
This was a fantastic video. I previously watched the lemon curd. This popped up.
You are a wonderful teacher Rose. It always amazes me how much we can learn on You Tube. It's better than any school I've been to. I was reading some comments and people are learning everything with this crazy covid crap. Excuse me but I know it's driving us all crazy.
You are so welcome. I have also learned a lot on You Tube during this time. I am planning a passive solar greenhouse and have watched dozens of videos on that topic!
@@RoseRedHomestead That's wonderful Rose. I'd love to see that. Thank you again.
God bless
Yum! Can I have some? I love your channel!
OMG, thank you so much for this video, I just received my freeze dryer, and I cant wait to try your lemon curd recipe. Thank you again.
You are so welcome! And congratulations on your new freeze dryer! We love ours.
I was wondering if you were happy with how the lemon curd reconstituted and what your thoughts are on it. I love lemon curd, but it doesn't have a very long shelf life when canned, to I am hopping this would last longer. I wish your would do more freeze drying recipes. So many people have them now that a video every couple months on this channel or Trailgrazers would be so nice. Thank you for always inspiring us to do more to build our pantries.
Yes, Pam is happy about the lemon curd. We will be making more freeze drying videos. Jim
Maybe you've already done this, but I'd love to see your freeze dried/dehydrated/powdered pantry. I am learning so much from your videos. And love to see how to put these practices in motion and then how to use them for every day cooking.
Thanks for that request. Jim and I prefer to keep our pantry private, but we are going to show a new shelving unit soon and show how we earthquake-proof it and how we organize food.
I would love to have one of those freeze dryers. A little over 2g at Home Depot 😥Love all your videos! I hope you make more canning videos for the fall harvest.
That is the plan! Thanks.
Amazing process!!! Thank you for showing us!!
You are so welcome!
If you ever get up to Logan, Ut. On weekdays, you can go to Caspers creamery where they sell seconds. Bring dry Ice!
You are such a hoot!
Thanks! LOL
Love it Pam! Tfs! ❤
Vikki: Yes, they were very good, especially the ice cream. Jim
Amazing
Thanks!
thank you for your informative video. I am looking into purchasing an fd and need all the information on how to and what you can make with it. Thus I can convince the hubby that is a necessary item for our home.
There are lots of UA-cam videos on the freeze dryer, so you have plenty of sources to search!
You have convinced me. My next purchase is the freeze dryer.
They are pretty great!
They are like 4 Grand.........
@@truthhurtz2793 there is a small unit for like 1600.00
@@susiewolfgong3496 -- harvestright.com/product/home-freeze-dryer/
The 'small' Harvest right is $2195, but--it has the crappy oil pump that you have to strain the oil after each use.
The oil free pump for this unit (which is what I want) is $1,495 by itself.
I have been keeping my eye on these for some time.
I don't know where you saw one for $1,600.
Oooo! I am excited for this!
Us too!
That’s awesome, I love your videos 😍... so is the ice cream eaten as candies !!! Or probably put at fridge until they are humid and reconstituted!! Sorry for my question which might seem dummy but this tech is still new for me. Thank you 🙏 ❤️
Yes--eaten like candies. No refrigeration. No reconstitution--that would be a big mess! Great question--thanks.
So you no longer have to worry about the dairy spoiling or molding?
I have been on the fence about freezing drying at home for many years now. Seeing the lemon curd just makes me want to do this
I had no idea it would turn out so good. When reconstituted, I can't tell the difference between fresh and freeze dried.
Please share with us which freeze dryer you bought, and what size you bought, thanks!
@@kosnich8032 I believe there is only one brand on the market
@@Moore2Lifepantrylovinprepper Hi Mandy 👋🏼. If you get one “freeze dryer” it’ll change your life! I love mine, even though I just got it. There are so many things you can do with it. Btw: thank you so much for taking care of Heather, you’re an angel. ❤️🙏🏻❤️ We all love her and are praying for her.
@@RoseRedHomestead Hi Pam, how did you reconstitute these products? Thank you for your info, knowledge, and wisdom.
Nicely done! How exciting for y’all!! Have fun!
Thanks so much!!
Major cool!
Thanks!
When I freeze dry ice cream, or whatever food is being dried, I store it by putting an oxygen wafer in my 1/2 gallon jar. The O2 packet will eat the oxygen in the jar and any oxygen that's in the food. To give the oxygen wafer a head start, I vacuum seal the jar with food in it and seal it leaving the ring on the lid. All of these things are vital if you want your food to last for years on the shelf.
Rose if you run your hand under the try if its cold its not dry . If there soft i did put them in my Excalibur dehydrator they turned out fine.
This was a fun one! Thanks Pam! Do you use the FAST FREEZE option? I am going to hunt that curd recipe.
We do not have a fast freeze option. Jim
Wow, you're getting so experimental with your freeze drying! _Ice cream,_ whodathunk?
Amazing. 🍋🍪🍧
Thanks!
I have to chuckle at the Fat Boys. They are always in our freezer for hubby.
LOL
I froze dried your lemon curd recipe. Man was that a tough job. All that sugar is my guess as to why it took so longgggg!
Rose where did you order yours. I can’t find the oilers vacuum you have. What company please
When it comes time to defrost, do you turn off the pump or leave the pump going
Can you link where you got this freeze dryer?
harvestright.com
May I ask where did you get your freeze dryer from and the brand name? I would love to look into this.
It is a Harvest Right and so far as I know, they are the only ones who make a home freeze dryer. You can buy direct from them.
@@RoseRedHomestead Thank you 🙏
What kind of blender is this? I don’t have FB, sorry.
WOWW!!!!
LOL!
Do you have a separate freezer? Or do u freeze them in the freeze dryer? For reduced time
We have a separate freezer and we do freeze our items in the freeze dryer. Jim
Can you dehydrate the ice cream bars also? Also, can you dehydrate milk to make powdered milk? I see a lot of people doing it however is it safe? Thanks
Oh my !!
Yes!
What is that called that you are cutting it all with!? I would love something like that! 😍
It's a bench scraper/knife.
Please everyone go over to the Kneady Homesteader channel and help out Heather and her beautiful family during this tragic time. They need the positive thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for letting me know.
Pam, call Harvest Right and request a free set of silicone mats. If you did not use an affiliate link to purchase your freeze dryer they will happily send you a set. Thats how I got mine!
Thanks for the tip! But I did use an affiliate. But it is OK. The oven liner material I use seems to be working fine.
What freeze dryer did you end up going with?
Harvest Right medium. We are really enjoying it.
@@RoseRedHomestead that is the one I ordered! Can’t wait to try it out💕. TY
Do you see much of an increase in your utility bill using the dryer?
We just checked our bill last night and it appears it costs under $2 per load. We think that is pretty great! Most loads take more than 24 hours.
Wow thats exciting. I may have to get one myself.
I tried fd ice cream at harvest right when I ordered fd. Biting I to it it was like dragging my fingernails down a chaulk board. It wasn't that bad if you stuck it instead of biting. Several people I talked to felt the same way
That is interesting. It doesn't seem to bother us. And the Fat Boys are to die for!
@@RoseRedHomestead did you bite it? I think that was my problem. By the way how many recipes of lemon curd do you you think k it would take to fill 5 trays?
I made the lemon curd and it's delicious! I was wondering how long might it last in a vacuumed sealed jar after freeze drying? Could I add an O2 absorber as well?
We made up some the other day we have had for over a year with just vacuum sealing, and it was great. You could add an O2 absorber, but it really isn't necessary.
The opposite of pressure cooking:)
More pressure increases temp and extremely low pressure decreases temp
Right on!
You certainly are a font of information!!!
You can reconstitute the dairy or anything else with water, correct?
Thanks and have a great weekend!!!!
Yes you can! I am still fussing with how to make freeze dried sour cream smooth and little issues like that, but we are getting there!
@@RoseRedHomestead ,
Yes, sour cream gets grainy when it gets frozen.
Fascinating stuff. So much to learn. Did you get any canning knowledge from your own mother? You know soooooo much!
Trying to fd lemon curd. How long should it take? My favorite has been running for 2 days now. Thanks
When we did 1 tray of lemon curd and three of ice cream, it took 30 hours.
I have FD my lemon curd before, just make sure you spread it thin! It is a Wonderful addition to cakes!
Did you just say cutting them in half soo you "DON'T HAVE TO EAT A WHOLE ONE" 😂 That's so funny bc of course no one normal says that ever. It's a must you eat a whole one when hard times Come and you have prepared like that.
LOL--right!
I freeze dried my lemon curd however it came out sticky. It didn't explode or anything like maple syrup would but it isn't rock hard. Should I run it again?
is this a medium or large freeze dryer?
I think it is the Medium. If you go to the Harvest Right website you should be able to tell by the amount of trays.
How would you serve the ice cream
Just like it is--finger food dessert! I would never attempt to reconstitute it--it would be a big mess.
We must be in the same FB group... I was reading about the Fatboy ice cream this week and thought I’d attempt it myself... I've had FD ice cream I bought at the camping store but haven’t yet made it myself. A suggestion for you when you test to see if your food is dry, check the center part of your tray underneath the food. On my trays, it seems to be the last part to dry thoroughly. If you feel any cold part under the food, it needs to dry more. I love all your videos! I am so excited that you got a freeze dryer!!!!! I FD almost every day in mine and I love it!
Thanks for the tip! We will do that. I'm in Betty's FD Group. The ice cream turned out great--you should try it. And of course, the Fat Boys are to die for!
Do you think the ice cream would be good powered to reconstitute?
I think that is doubtful. If you want to do it, go for it and let us know what happened.
@@RoseRedHomestead no, I trust your judgment :) I was just curious. Thank you!
Yum ❤️🇨🇦
I’ve canned lemon curd but freeze drying it is intriguing. I’ve been looking at a freeze dryer for about six years I just need to bite the bullet I think
They are pretty wonderful!
Hi Pam, where did you buy your dehydrator from?
Magic Mill
@@RoseRedHomestead Thanks dear!!!
Just did my first batch and everything was still frozen. Your trays and food look warm. What did I do wrong?
If the moisture was gone and they were dry, but frozen, it means that the cycle ended sometime earlier and the freeze dryer will take the temperature down to freezing again to prevent the food from absorbing the moisture from the ice on the sides of the cylinder. If you catch the cycle just as it ends, the food is a bit warm.

Wow--thanks!
Harvest Right sells silicon mat to make the trays to prevent sticking g also
Yes they do and they are quite expensive, which is why we found another option.
I think you need a gadget! There is a moisture meter not real pricy on Amazon might be helpful😊
I will check it out! Thanks! LOL.
What room is the freeze dryer in? Where are we? Madame Professor's laboratory? 😁
It is in my old honeybee lab that I have converted to the freeze dryer lab.
I think am not gonna can, instead am getting this as it lets food stay fresh longer lol. for canning i need machines since i dont have a stove but a hot plate.
Thanks for your comment.
My sons name is Kelvin❤
LOL! Nice name!
Getting a little older now. Wondering if I can freeze-dry my life. teeheehee
Let me know if it works...I might join you! LOL
Maybe an electric knife?
Hmmmm...worth a try. Thanks.
Tomato sauce and tomato paste could be interesting! ~~Sharon
I am planting lots of tomatoes this year so we can do that very thing. I have heard that tomatoes do great in a freeze dryer.
I have FD my meat sauce and it was delicious! I have also FD my rabbit jambalaya when we had rabbits and it was so good!
Yeah...first viewer.....
Well done!
is it just going to be freeze drying freeze drying freeze drying from now on?.....come on....almost all of the public can not afford a freeze dryer.......nor should many of us invest in it....do I need to go to other web sites to learn the old fashioned ways......
