Vince Neil was a good singer back in the 80s. Why are people surprised? Back in the 80s, the internet wasn’t really a thing so in order to get any music exposure you had to have a record deal, and in order to get a record deal you had to have actual talent. Vince wasn’t a Steve Perry kind of singer, but he had a decent tenor range and had decent diction. Even David Lee Roth who is known for being a bad singer was decent in the 70s and 80s.
That's an effect with his voice, after the singer drops the vocal track the producer mixes it with the bass, 6 string electric, and drums, and will often add an effect to the vocals to make it sounder better for the album.
the definition of metal flows thru his vocals. its almost a shame that we held this talent back and made it taboo when it is exactly what a generation needed to break through and feel freeeeeeee
He sounds great hear but bad live because he’s always running around and running out of breath. I remember when he sang “home sweet home” live and he sounded great because he sat down and was completely still
Dr. Andy Hildebrand is the inventor of the voice pitch-correcting software called Auto-Tune. The first song published using Auto-Tune on the vocals was the 1998 song "Believe" by Cher. Vince Neil definitely did not have auto tune, He had a sound engineer. He might not be the best singer, But he kicked ass in Motley Crew.
I agree with this comment. Vince Neil was not the best singer, or the one with the most range, but he was the right voice for Motely Cru. For whatever reason, even if his singing sucks, it worked in the studio and I loved their albums and his voice.
so what? Dr. Feelgood is a powerful album, Motley had back then the best producer since their first album. I know they aren't Van Halen, it's not one take, but it still sounds badass.
Shit..u not tha only one..im gonna see motley almost 30 years after this came oit..i also seen them ar cruefest in. Miwaukkee wi in 09...i hope vince can wail like thatagain one more rime
@hyperfocus No doubt you can hear it's pieced together in several spots. And, for the record, singing in the studio it much, much easier than singing live where Vince does not shine...
auto-tune as a product was released in 1997 but pitch-shifting wasn't invented in the 90s by a long shot. it was definitely used to help along singers as early as the 70s at least (and possibly earlier). also cher wasn't the first musician to use pitch shifting as an effect in a song.
ok like lol this is my first comment on a video WHOOO ! Lol and it's called overdubbing ,lol it's liek the singers equilivant of a double guitar solo , just cause a singer can ( usualy lol ) only hit one note at a time dosent mean they sould be denied what guitarists and bassists have all the time , lol it's basicaly liek singing your own harmonies lol i dont c anything wrong with it , freddie mecurey and every one else does it , lol vince ROCKS ! :D
On albums he is top notch, but singing live he is the shits. He skips every second word, trys to sing different and just ruins it cause it is never in tune. And trust me, ive seen them 4 times live. Funny things though, i was googling vince, and i guess he has sung like an A hole live since 1085
If you sing you would know thats neil 1, or 2, takes it dont matter,He does sing thats what he does so if its more takes its because they want more neil is very good the first time.He would almost sound worse after 15 takes opose the first grab a mic and go.Brother neil,,,,,,,,,
in the book they said they had the vince neil timeframe to work with him and that was all they could record with him it was between beers number 4 and 8
No, I would think it’s more than he’s a extremely large alcoholic who is either drunk or hung over and is in terrible shape, and it’s 35 years later. He’s terrible now. That happens when you’re old and an alcoholic.
Well, I wouldn't say it's impossible for a rock singer to come up with an awesome lead vocal track in one take, this IS so heavily produced that it's almost sick. This is almost more produced than some vocal tracks you hear nowadays.
SuperKamiGuru 97, big studios had used the manual pitch correction since late 80s. You can hear it on the Metallica's Black Album. And it sounds much better than Antares Autotune.
From Steve Hoffman music forums: I've read interviews with producers and engineers from the 80's who used digital samplers for pitch correction. They would record a line or word from the original take to the sampler, manipulate it, then play it back on the fly and record it back to tape. I think the Publison Infernal Machine processor was used sometimes, as were Eventide Harmonizers as noted earlier in this thread. I remember a recent Scott Humphrey interview where he said he worked on Metallica's "Metallica" (Black Album), tuning James's vocals in "Sound Tools", the predecessor to "Pro Tools".
To be fair, yeah, the vocals seem more manufactured rather than natural. But that’s what has to be done because, in case anyone hasn’t noticed, there are 3 instruments playing over the vocals in every single MC song, so it’s all got to equal out. I was fortunate enough to have seen both the Girls tour show and the Feelgood tour show live, and the vocals all round were crap. Of course, I went to the concerts to see Nikki and Tommy, not really anything else. They were the showmen and knew how to entertain. I saw all the major hairbands of the 80s Live and the best live bands I can remember were Great White and Warrant (flawless performances) The rest all had some issues and were mediocre, at best. Oh and I saw GNR live twice (MC tour) and headline. Axl’s live voice is shit too. Haha.
Axl's voice is shit live?? Sorry, I have to disagree. I also saw them live. Up until around 2010 Axl had a GREAT live vocal. I mean if you want to compare it to what he did on the albums then you are going to be let down because his album work is insanely good and untouchable. Now their latest tour, which I also saw, he was absolutely horrible. I've heard he is better now though.
IDK man, yeah vince is okay, but Axl, as much of a douche as he is, is clearly an awesome singer. It's really not like there aren't people that sing as well as elvis. Elvis's voice was as good as it gets, but at the same time, it was also the uniqueness of his voice and what he was doing that made him famous. Actually, I hate to say it, but i was never really a fan of Vince Neil. his voice is a little whiney for me.
mAN.. I LOVE MOTLEY CRUE,. I WAS JUST REPLYINg to some dude saying that vince sings actually good... and he does not... he is cool and stuff.. but his singing sucks.
"Ladies and gentlemen come play with Dr. Feelgood." Took me 30 years but I figured out what that growling distorted voice says during the guitar solo!
Dan Given haha. I never knew it either. This videos pays off. Lol
Dan Given Its “Listen to jimmy come play with doctor feelgood”
I heard: oh so gently complete the clock
no auto tune it's just that he multi tracked the vocals and it was on tape so it's a bit wet sounding
Pre suppressor
Vince had balls and grit to his voice. That is what set him apart from almost every other singer in the 80's.

what still amazes me is how Brian Johnson did every vocal track for the Back in Black album in one take...then had a drink on the peer
sounds so fucking weird without the music, but his voice is awesome
Lol it was
@@casetheace8494 It is, He has a great voice but not a great pronunciation dude
That's an effect with his voice, after the singer drops the vocal track the producer mixes it with the bass, 6 string electric, and drums, and will often add an effect to the vocals to make it sounder better for the album.
I like the fact at the beginning you can hear vince clear his throat
Just imagine 2015 Vince but with his 80's voice
the definition of metal flows thru his vocals. its almost a shame that we held this talent back and made it taboo when it is exactly what a generation needed to break through and feel freeeeeeee
He sounds great hear but bad live because he’s always running around and running out of breath. I remember when he sang “home sweet home” live and he sounded great because he sat down and was completely still
That's the reason why in unplugged performances, the singers sounds better than common performances.
here*
This is analog tape. An unforgiving, but beautiful medium. It captures vibe magically and the Crue created both... Without a doubt...
love how he just clearshis throay int he beggening
It’s not auto tune. It’s a flanger. You can tell for sure when the guitars come in. Just a sped up flanger. And it suuuucks lol
And a lot of reverb too. Most of its lost in the mix luckily
@@Tim_Ankarbranth no autotune in the 80s duh

Dr. Feelgood is a powerful album, Motley had back then the best producer since their first album.

In 2015 he changed the lyrics a little bit.
The sound engineer sounds great
I actually use this effect style on some of my songs. but not as a standard lol.

Its just soaked in reverb
This is a bit of flanger and gain, and mostly reverb

2:54 is he talking with food in his mouth?
I was expecting comedy, like david lee roth, but this is just what you'd expect.

According to "The Dirt" (the book, not the movie) the producer of Dr Feelgood spent quite a bit of time fixing the pitch on Vince's vocals.
