- In the finale of our RWD VW GTI build we find out if our crazy plan actually works! In this episode we fabricate a downpipe, the driveshaft mounts, and weld our differential again. We also find out the engine and trans are locked up and destroy other parts in the drivetrain.

I mean, closest car from vw for a rwd swap would be a Passat B5/ B5.5 it has a longitudinal engine and space for the driveshaft since you can get a 4motion version of it :D

Not really. Dont get me wrong this RWD swap is cool but saying the VW GTI should be RWD as standard is pretty silly when you think about it. The reason everyone knows the GTI name is because was a high performance but relatively cheap and versatile vehicle. Hot hatches became popular because they took economy cars and added performance. This is why they can be much cheaper than their high end rivals which are all based on luxury vehicles. You make it RWD then the cost goes up, the weight goes up, you lose interior space and the whole point of a hot hatch goes away.
Put it this way, there have been plenty of "RWD hot hatches" over the years, and none of them are still made (Yes, this includes BMW as their latest 1 series is FWD). More importantly none of them even got close to the popularity of the GTI.

@@DigitalDissident i honestly wish i traded mine in for an e82 earlier this year instead of getting an S14 and 1jz and tons of parts idk either way ill have a badass build. ill trade the gti for an m2 or e82 when my business starts taking off.

Steve I been away from VW for 5 years cause I had to do grown up stuff and buy a house (sold the golf r). Now I’m riding clean in my mk8 GTI and am back.

I had a mk5 exactly like this, same color, 2 door, mine had leather seats. I loved it. Rolled it right on its roof when I was 18. I have a B7 A4 now that’s stage 3 but I still miss that little hatchback
That’s a definite win and makes a cool car infinitely more cool.

I love rear engine rear wheel drive.My family used to have T3 VW with 200 HP.At 2000s year I thought this is very fast.And it really looked inside.I miss that van! Since that day I love rear engine rwd,they have crazy accleration!

This is incredible
On Honda awd systems we typically weld/pin the clutch patch to eliminate any sort of clutch slip! I’m sure the same can be applied to the Haldex system, but that of course would require two different clutch packs incase you want to swap to a working/unwelded one.

Done this in my MKV 4motin 1.9pd, if I recall 6 years ago. Had a bent front driveshaft, the driver side one, took it out and kept only the bearing part with the 6 balls, the right side driveshaft was still on, but the diff was open, so did not metter. You don't need a modified haldex controller, will work withe the standard one.It will lock the clutch as it has different speed between the casing and the plates, so will pump oil and self enable it.... also the electronics always enable it during the start ;). I drove it like that for 200km or more. Had allot of fun but wheels are slipping like hell, the car is too light on the rear axle, and the battery was in the front. The car had a remap, to 160bhp and 370NM.
