Probably one of the creepiest parts of don`t starve together is the ancients canonically peeling off their skins and it`s one of the most overshadowed. Like... people don`t just do that...
So do we lost our part of our soul if we stand in light completely so there is no soul or shadow or if we stay in completely darkness do we lost ourselves.
Cool recap, but I still find it weird that you have yet to mention the fact that the king is sitting on a throne while shadows grow closer around him and have not made a connection between it and the nightmare throne that makes whoever sits on it the ruler of the constant. Also, I don't think this theory is widespread enough, but considering the fact that the lunar entity appears to be a moon and is named Alter, it would make sense for the shadow entity, whose power seems opposite, to have appear like a planet and have an antonym name like the Constant. This would fit with the fact that dreadstone seems to grow out of the Constant, because it literally is growing out of the shadow entity. It is also why the shadow sanity meter is the dominate effect when on the Constant, because you are literally on the shadow entity. Additionally, the deeper you get, the more powerful the shadow entity's influence becomes (the ruins are deeper than the base caves and the atrium is canonically even deeper than the ruins, its why you have to access it by a tunnel), because you are getting closer to the core of the Constant, or the core of the shadow entity. As the final point, the piece of the lunar island has lunar fissures on it that release lunar influence depending on the cycle of the moon, and the moon can be locked into the peak of its cycle by assembling some altars. Similarly, the Constant has shadow fissures that release shadow influence depending on the nightmare cycle, and the nightmare cycle can be locked into its peak by placing a key into the altar-like ancient gateway.
this may be a long shot but touchstones -> revive players -> expell nightmare fuel as residue from revival nightmare fuel -> power of resurrection ?? Metheus rebuilding the gateway -> trying to revive her entire species and civilization
This definitely stinks of the concept of yin and yang. You need both the shadows and the lunar powers to be equal to create a world like the Don’t starve characters originally come from. When the ancients first tried they probably had too much lunar power which forced them underground, then they had too much shadow power which corrupted their forms. Now we are attempting to harness their powers and eventually we might be able to create the yin and yang required to leave.
as for thing that forced ancients to go to caves, i have theory. gnaw from gorge event. one of things on mural can be roughly interpreted as gnaw. it would also make sense as we saw gnaw likes corrupting everything. it created merms, possibly it even created whole swamp as we know. as for why they eventually turned to shadow power, my guess is simple. they had limited number of opals as remaining power source, and as we know gems eventually break if used enough, and in caves alter power couldn't be easily accessed, so in act of desperation they grabbed the shadow power, regardless of cost

Edit: I just finished watching the video, buddy, you have a talent for narrative, I always thought the canon lore of the Ancients were confusing, but you made it simple. And broo now I feel bad for Fuelweaver 😭 (still hate him though, annoying boss fight)
this is so interesting :D its also a very resource for when i finally crack and make a powerpoint presentation on the lore of DS and DST :3 (unrelated should i join the discord?)
They could have built the gateway but they surely know prior to this that was a point in space where a deep connection to them would form. There is no way is was just a big coincidence. It would make no sense at all. But an insteresting thing you are bringing up is that shadow and lunar ( alter and tenebrous ) are not just opposite forces, but there are some deeper connection between the two. It is like their powers complement each other like shown in the gateway and the archives. Guess we need to wait to see. Hope klei keeps developing the lore from now in a good pace.
