I wanted to run a little experiment to determine who would survive a basic free for all battle, and essentially learned that this is D&D. Where random rolls and acting before other people sorta determine everything, not skill, not strategy, not numbers. But it is fun and stupid.

Fighters when there's a fight contest:

Sorcerers when there's a sorcer contest:
@@mattheusfincoim no scientist, but I'd wager that the fighter would be pretty good at fighting
As a spellcaster, going instantly from MVP to running a circle for dear life when your slots run out is very relatable.
My artificer running out of slots turns into a melee fighter.
To be fair most of my slots went into healing, vortex warp, and feather fall.
My party isn’t the brightest.
Meanwhile warlock blasting all time eldrich blasts left and right
Barb or warlock. Cleric with spell slots owns
And then asking the party for a Long Rest so you can fire again
@@PleasentDddd mine pulls out a gun, then again I usually play games where guns are actually guns.
I love the image of just using inflict wounds and just eroding someones body from the inside out like a badass but not a second later they realize "well crud that's all I have" and needing to run away in full sprint
God said only 1 evisceration today
All of this followed by Pearl who walked through this tournament like a terminater and just crushed her skull like it was nothing
I find it rather amusing that instead of having the 11 clearly powerful people all go complete the task, he just tells them to kill each other for his amusement.
Wasn't in the budget?
Hmm, I guess the character who doesn’t get targeted wins
Well that may be true, but I think that since fighters have good AC and decent HP compared to most at low level. and most classes such as casters dont have that unlimited power yet, while melee does make at least a good strike without spell slots needed. I suppose fighters were still good candidates.
@@ysgramortheelfkiller2328 hexblades could be really strong due to it being a melee class that could do spell attacks with its melee modifier
@@keenren7873 well I am certainly not the one to question. I have trying to start playing dnd for months but due to not finding proper time or group, I stick to spending my free time seeing dnd content whenever I can.
Smurfette killed 3 of them she was clearly the best of the bunch.
she killed four, the bard, the wizard, the druid and the paladin
not to be rude but she was clearly a glass cannon sure she had good damage output but she ran out of gas pretty fast and it took a level 1 fighter 1 round to just take her out of the fight if anything the fighter just shows that having good ac and hit points (even if he didn't get hurt at all) is pretty useful since if Smurfette lost in the initiative she could of gotten bodied before even getting a spell off.
granted for the joke yeah she did well above average but this is dnd where stuff is very random one day your getting a killstreak of 5 and the next your getting knocked out with a floating bell a chair leg and a bird flying into your head talons first
I think that she would probably have won if the paladin went for the fighter instead of her, she lost just because got too focused down, while pretty much no one even tried to attack the fighter, very easy for the fighter when no one even tried to hit you
it's crazy how unbalanced the new warlock familiars are
like, the spinx of wonder he had no clue was had like 24 HP and magic resistance while the skeleton familiar has half that and no abilities
Tbf, he can wear armor
Skeleton have proficiencies with shortbow and shortswords, and it is medium-sized creature. So it has some utility - but not in combat (unless you have some good bow to give him).
Now that was some good storytelling.
Drama, action, bloodshed, all in 10 minutes well spent
Arcane casters who have the spell Sleep…
The first to cast Sleep can ‘nuke’ and 1st level group easily.
Depends greatly on what race everyone is playing cause elf is very popular
In 2024, sleep got nerfed so it’s not as OP against low HP targets
Sleep, while by no means a bad spell, wouldn't be very effective in a group pvp like this. You'll hit a small radius of 5-feet and then be unable to capitalize on it.
@@dew-it8744
This bothers me a little... did they raise the maximum to compensate?
Sleep was useless at high levels, and if you weaken it at low levels... what does it have left?
The AOE is small and would need to target people with lower Wisdom and hope they don’t save
So you're telling the class with "fight" in it name won a fight? Who would have though?
It also never got attacked. It would died if it started next to that flamethrower and took 15 damage. Having no attack cantrips on a caster is silly
There is no way, literally no way, than a fighter lvl 1 defeat a barbarian lvl 1
@caurd don't underestimate stupid rolls
Nothing was learned, but it was fun. I'd watch a similar competition where each contestant took a class, and each battle was a level, no multiclassing.
Fun! You’d need to repeat the experiment a few times to learn anything. Congrats to the winner.
This specific setup probably wont tell us anything regardless of how many times you run it, because the result is so heavily biased by who runesmith choses to attack, in this case the winner didnt get attacked even once.
You'd have to set it up as a tournament style series of 1v1's to find out who actually has the strongest level one (its probably barbarian lol)
big ol punnett square of matchups
@@Freekymoho ahh barbarians, constantly ranked as A class while they effectively have double the HP, extra damage and insane criticals. even extra movement speed and forever lasting rage in later levels
The location matters too if you have range the ranger rouge and warlock hold considerable advantage
@@DarkMark-cf1ec Cause fighting is all they can do. Sure, they are hella good at it, but they cant really do anything besides that to help others or themselves.
I found Barbarian to be the most boring Class to play as
I love how A Paladin got taken out by a Cleric/Paladin Spell😂
Inflict Wounds was always my favorite "GET TF AWAY FROM ME" Spell.
For its level, it hits like a TRUCK, with a nice damage Type.
Not the big spell anymore sadly, only 2d10 now. But that's still enough for a 1st level PC
@greenman2166 Yeah. That's more damage than a Greatsword, with a pretty safe damage option (outside of undead enemies).
@@yamato9753 I mean even taking everything into account the only things that resist or are immune to necrotic are things like super strong angels, high ranking fiends, and even undead most of them resist necrotic, with a relatively small number being outright immune
Inflict Wounds is also very fun as an NPC spell. But the new monster statblock template with the "spell attack" actions usually makes that redundant nowadays.
@@greenman2166it’s half as much on a failed save though, so it’s a bit less frustrating to compensate
That's... a very cool question.
Level 1 characters are all kind of made of paper even for the tankier classes, so it really does just kind of come down to die rolls and initiative. Also not wasting your time doing debuffs or non damaging actions because when pretty much any class can be OHKO with a lucky strike or two set up is just a waste of time.
In terms of this video, it also felt like the low initiative characters ended up being favored because you tended to attack characters who had already gone much more often (maybe because they were higher up in your mind due to having done something already, maybe to let every class get a chance to do something before dying)
As usual, Inflict Wounds is nuts. You just never expect such an unassumingly named spell to rip people in half.
Fighter I bet.
It seems like casting mage armor is a much better use of a spell slot in the long run than maybe killing one or two people with a terrible blast spell.
Rogue can get sneak attack off due to weapon masteries. Vex is the property on a shortsword so if you opt into that and nick along with twf you can set up sneak attack so long as the attack with the shortsword hits. Great video btw! i love these combat scenarios!
I once rolled 5 nat 1 for a dragon.
What should be an epic fight became a comedy sketch.
I was introducing my BBEG for the first time and his first attack was a nat 1. He had his face punched in.....
Shoutout to my first ever campaign where our bard dealt with a dragon by polymorphing it into a fish and tossing it off a cliff
Before watching my bet is Barbarian.
Well I was wrong but holy cow the sorcerer got a whole bunch of people.
Barb is my guess, or paladin
When I clicked on this video, I thought it was going to be an in-depth study about which class is most effective at level 1. What I got was so, so much better. I hope you make more of these videos, or even play through an entire campaign by yourself
On the subject of people lacking power sources, the subs at 3 was the first big red flag that told me OneD&D would be bad.
Playtest: "We're looking into standardizing sub progression."
Feedback: "Standardized subs are a great idea: It means less awkward stretches between sub features (Sorcerer/Rogue) and could allow for class-agnostic subclasses! It should be standardized to start at 1 though."
Subsequent playtests: "Standardized sub progress is gone, but everyone gets their sub at 3."
The playerbase: “That is the exact opposite of what we said.”
Playerbase: “That is the exact opposite of what we said.”
I think they did it that way to give players more time to think about what subclass they want, instead of just thrusting the choice on them at level 1. And you know, the obvious balancing reason of stopping people from potentially having five subclasses at level 5.
Subs at level 1 are bad idea - 1 level dips are big problem with how much they give, so having a subclass on top is stupid idea. Removing multiclassing, or making it heavilly restricted would solve this problem - but 4e did it, and 4e = bad, too anime, too videogamey or something - it is out of the question.
Book straight up saying to start at level 3 if your group arent newbies anyway (and i personaly never saw a group who starts at level 1 outside of oneshots anyway).
@notsochosenone5669 Level 1 subs are fine, it's "a la carte" multiclassing that is bad. OneD&D was a chance to change that and they didn't even consider it.
Finally, fighters winning at fighting.
I love these little “playing dnd by yourself” videos. Would love to see more like this!
8:28 - "Ladies and gentlemen, we killed Star Wars."
- Disney, probably.
These fight videos are super fun, and really unique! It's a very amusing way to showcase parts of the game, and the randomness makes them really entertaining. I hope you keep making these!
Way to go, Pearl! I met you 20 years ago as an extremely minor character of a now massive story, but somehow I could never forget you.
I did a tournament with the 2024 rules for all 12 classes at level 10. It was a double elimination bracket, and I made and played all the characters (it was sad but a lot of fun). In the end, the Sorcerer won it all.
I believe a big reason for that is because I had the Sorcerer be a Wild Magic Sorcerer, and honestly the new Wild Magic Sorcerer is low key broken. As long as you have spell slots, you can get advantage on any d20 test, and if you do that you roll on the new, super buffed Wild Magic table
For battle royals, I'd recommend using the character's Dexterity score instead of rolling Initiative: it's a very influential roll and it should be left to the characters' stats.
You alerted me to the pact of the chain changes
The updated quasit is fucking nutty: 25hp, cold/fire/lightning resist, unlimited shapeshifting, unlimited invis, magic resist, poison on attack and a scare per day
The sphinx isn't bad either: 24hp, magic resist, 1d4+3 plus 2d6 radiant, and "Burst of Ingenuity" +2 to a roll for allies twice a day and it can fly
They're both the only ones that can speak as well
edit: Imp as well 21hp, magic resist, devil sight, speech, flight, 1d6+3 plus 2d6 poison, invis and shapeshift
Quick tip, Paladins no longer have to pre-cast smite spells, they can use the bonus action after they have hit.
And they also don't have concentration
We learned we need to do this at level 2 now. Also, maybe open up dumb character creation to the community, lol.
You anger about these guys missing their attacks was very funny
You should do this but with the 2024 subclasses. Have it be each class per video and then the winner of each video faces the other winners in a grand championship. I think it'd be fun to watch
Sorcerer almost winning is incredible. Would love to see a spreadsheet with like 100 trials.
i now kind of want to see this crew do a dungeon together.
i wonder if it actually would be possible to survive this as a full caster. you'd need to keep at range and skirmish. maybe fog cloud and expeditious retreat for the wiz, maybe a tempest cleric in heavy armor with fog cloud and sanctuary (no-one would want to attack you as they're most likely to miss and if they hit they die too). bonus points for making a thunder damage "fog" cloud fart themed cleric to fit in with the goofballs runesmith has assembled here.
And his name is Butthole Farch
It’s so funny how the last three fighters all could use fire
Smurfette and the paladin could use fire spells.
Pearl could use fire in OP. Neat
What did we learn? Backgrounds matter now, and that's awesome.
The Sphinx of Wonder is actually a really cool little dude. Dungeon Dad has a video about it that he got to make as a preview for the new core books.
"Prince Nanoc, son of O'Brien" XD it wouldn't be a Runesmith video without the silly names
You should have saved this for April Fool's day. All that sweet sweet set up for the punchline. A fabulous video.
Skeleton familiar on their way to become main character of their own story
I fell asleep to this and thought I played d&d instead of going to choir before school, then forgot what my first class was and went to my second class of music class where they were going over d&d alignments.
I’m 29 by the way
Nice video, I'd watch a series like this. Can you do a "Who would win if every level 3 fighter subclass fought?"
Subclasses should be unlocked at Level 1 for all classes.
I don’t know why any class ever had to wait for Level 3 especially since sometimes you need to have the right AS to even use a subclass. Like Eldritch Knight.
Finally, proof that Fighter is a good class actually. Thank you, Mr. Runesmith.
besides a wizard who's creative, fighter is objectively the best class in the game it can fill any role the martials have and can use any weapon or armor and can has amazing action economy as well as a good selection of subclasses.

Off the top of my head, subclasses on level 1 would have a leg-up, like Cleric. Barbarian's HP and Rage probably would make it pretty high up too.
If we go by the new Handbook, there are no level 1 subclasses
none of the 2024 classes have subclasses at level 1. that's what all the "godless/oathless/patronless" jokes were making fun of

Clearly what we learned is that sorcerer is the best that level one, but only if you can stay mobile enough to keep out of the range of martial classes
I’d like to see this at level 2, 3, etc. my guess is sorcerer beats everybody as soon as they can twinspell a firebolt
Quickened true strike with a bow seems good too
2024 twin spell only works on spells that can target multiple creatures on an upcast, like Charm Person. Cantrips can't be upcasted.

Honestly this is so educational! You can spruce up Player Characters all you want, but in a flat arena with nothing else going on the combat would still be tedious ;O;
If this were done in a 1v1 tournament style bracket and each player gets a long rest between fights instead…
The Fighter gets second wind. They can heal themselves after a low damage blow.
But the Barb has the defense advantage.
But if the wizard is able to get good rolls on magic missles it’s unblock-able damage.

Would Monk get an offensive advantage with 2 attacks a turn? Basically giving it Extra attack?
Without having watched any of the video, I'm guessing barbarian. I feel like damage at level one is fairly even, but barbarians can take so much more than anyone else I think they win. Will comment again at the end to see if this has changed.
Ok, so they basically got hit with damage they didn't resist. I will say, I was thinking from the 2014 version, where paladins and rangers would have no spells, but also, I don't understand your builds man XD How are you determining these stats that a barbarian has such low ac?
@@tomgymer7719 Tell me about it. A monk with 14 AC and 9 Hp at lv 1 is very weird to say the least haha. I guess he just randomized for fun 😂
This was the best 10 minutes I've wasted in ages. I love Runesmith videos so much. Especially when Logan has no real point 😁 They're more fun that way.
Who wins the fight? Well, obviously, the guy whose literal job is called "Fighter".
What we learned... Spellcasters are super squishy at lv 1 due to low hp, ac, and no defensive spells. melee thanks to damage bonuses, high ac, and hp are actually good. those if this was a lv 20 fight this would be flipped.
Was kinda hoping this would've been for 5e
Would be cool to see how much of an advantage lvl 1 subclasses are aswell as just seeing the Artificer in general
Solo, PvP, Wargaming: is this how the Gibbering Mouther cult fed "Pa" last night?
Dudes that rolled a nat 1 in this tournament: I don't need to rush. I will still outlive those hasty weaklings.
My 8th level party did a 1v1 battle bracket earlier this year, which I won pretty handily; turns out Stunning Strike+Flurry of Blows is a very broken combo when there are only 2 combatants.
1v1? Twilight Cleric, Variant Human with Alert Feat
Cannot be surprised. Most likely to go first in initiative order. Can then cast sleep, then finish the opponent off with a Crit from a Maul.
Against elves (who do not sleep), you still have good odds, and can either kite them with a crossbow, or finish them off quick with Inflict Wounds.
This video is primarily 2024 content so VHuman is off the table.
Also the new Alert doesn’t make you immune to surprise anymore.
Also Sleep is a Saving throw and a smaller AOE so no promises on how much it works
A free for all is absolutely not how I would have determined who was the best, I'd just individually pit each one against like, 2-3 goblins or something like that and see how well they do in comparison.
I gotta say, for casters to nuke other casters first instead of using their pretty high damaging spells against the martials is… a pretty bad strategy
Fire is hilariously lethal at low levels
Whoever it is, definately not wizard because "dies of d4 -insert damage type here-" memes never ged old to me
Also I love that the ranger walks into the area, probably with some air of confidence and gets evaporated the moment fighting starts 😆
If it's a free for all, probably the rogue, just hide, and wait until the last one is left, tired from fighting everyone else, and backstab them
I'd like to have seen this but the characters actually think optimally and for winning/survival. Like when the rogue and cleric were fighting, the cleric was already low - the monk could have moved behind the rogue, killed him and then just had a cleric on death's door to deal with.
Would have liked some terrain too maybe, so the casters could hide, or the rogue could hide etc. Would have enjoyed seeing people focus the barbarian and paladin first instead of just attacking anyone, because those classes are more likely to win/be impactful. Good video though, enjoyed it c:
very cool and fun video, a sequel to this could be a tournament where each contestant levels up after each fight
Runesmith: "Ladies and gentlemen, we've killed star wars."

Oh hey... my first ever dnd session. We each got 3 potiona, so spent alot of time shootin out chill touches.
Gotta love burning hands. Makes introducing the bbeg wizard/sorcerer whatever with a handshake very interesting
That was way more fun to watch than it had any right to.
Smurfette really did the "Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique".
It will depend the Arena they are fighting in.
Example: Whom would waste a bet on the Ranger, if the arena space is ten feet by ten feet?
“The paladin who hasn’t taken an oath yet even though that’s their whole thing”
Yeah Paladins should really subclass at level 1 like clerics, huh?
Untouched fighter running up and punching depleted spell caster into pink mist and blue chunks was a great ending. Shame about Cinnamon Toast’s skeleton. Doomed to walk the earth as a passive observer. At least until some one kicks it over I guess.
Yeah, I feel like at level 1 in a flat, open arena, it was always going to come down to whoever struck first. Almost everyone in that fight had single digit hit points.
The Rogue or Bard wins, because the rogue hides until everyone but one is dead then backstabs them or the bard because they can talk others into alliances better and team up (and then betray them later at an opportune time)
I once was told by the DM to roll for my hit point dices, we were in the lvl 4, so I had to roll 3 dices, I was a wizard so 3d6... I got three 1s... he felt bad for me and let me reroll, I got a 6, a 4 and a 2, basically the same if we didnt have to roll dices and just used the flat value which I'm happy enough with, the triple 1 was sad.... I also only had 13 constitution because was planning on getting a talent to raise my constitution at lvl 8, so imagine having only 13 hit points at LEVEL 4.... someone's in the party had almost 40...
1v1 lvl 1 against a bladesinger that has sleep is probably the worst position someone could be. You only win if you're an elf or if you start first
The classes that get subclasses out of the gate have a definite advantages
I think. It's between Dragonic Sorcerer and War Cleric. Because they're the ones at level 1 that can have pretty high AC AND deal magic damage to Barbarians. On top of that, War Cleric has 2 attacks every turn.
Edit: oh it's 2024 edition. Well, I'm curious.
Warlock…you could start with your familiar before battle and depending on the familiar it has more HP and better attack than you, so at level 1 is much better than EB.
I agree with a comment that says it should at least be a 1x1 tournament
"The good king Doflamingo" lol that got me
Now we need to see who would win if every class fought at level 20.
Now you have to have each of them fight in a 1v1 and tale the average of who won the most for each fight to determine who is the very best.
(Probably do several iterations as well just in case, like any good experiment)
Obviously you wouldnt do this for the video, but the optimal move here imo is a build that takes tough, and always taking the Dodge action until theres only 2 left.
Not to Erm Actually Tips Fedora but I feel like the right choice in familiar for the warlock could really turn this simulation around. I'm inspired to try my own simulation!
Without having watched the vid yet, my money’s on the tanking power of a rage
*Ahem*, is this thing on? All right, good. FIGHTER GANG LETS GO!!!
