I am Dutch and 63 years old. I have been a fan of Neil Sedaka and many more of these types of artists from that time since I was 8. Elvis, Perry Como, Matt Monro etc. Great music. One particular song by Neil that has always stuck with me, I don't know why (perhaps the message), because he made so many good songs, is this gem
It is indeed his best. Matt Monroe, Walk Away. Superb. Dutch bands were so good. Golden Earring, Radar Love. Shocking Blue. Ma Belle Amie, Tee Set. Loved that band, Peter what a voice, and incredible video. And Focus . . Incredible
He was so good. This beautiful song, at a time the old rules were being swept aside. One of the best choruses, back when that heavenly harmonies sound added so much to music
This song pertains mostly to people with different religious beliefs even though the love & care are the stake isvery high. Neil's songs always have a story to tell & that's why he's a genius & a talented singer & a songwriter. Kudos to Neil.
Don't knock the rock no ....I hope I understand this right it's more religious differences I think than racial ..which is strange considering this song was released in 1969 ..and you would think racial more than religious indifference at the time BUT hell I was very young so didn't know these things .But saying that it could be racial WHO knows? ( only Neil sadaka could tell you this)
It is about interfaith relationships/marriages. He is questioning the priest "Father". At the tine the RC church would not marry a couple unless they were BOTH RC. So a man would have to convert or a woman (because at this time children belonged to their father) sign to say the children would raise RC
It was purely a Catholic bigotry and they are now paying the price. The audacity of the hierarchy, what the priests all over the globe have been guilty of, BUT they are forgotten, but not if you marry inter faiths. The churches are now empty. The Vatican has a lot to answer for. The lives of the people in love were destroyed mercilessly, the church might forgive their own BUT GOD will never.
As the others have said, it's about a Catholic asking a priest about a relationship with a girl who is either not a Catholic or not a Christian. I always assumed not a Christian, nor a Jew nor a Muslim as the line is 'she won't believe in the God we believe in', and all three of those faiths believe in the same God. It is true that the Catholic Church many years ago had rules about marrying people who weren't Catholic but it is definitely NOT true - not in Australia, anyway - that they refused to marry them. And certainly not in 1969! My grandparents were married in 1932 - she was Catholic, he wasn't. What used to happen here was that the non-Catholic was asked to agree that the children could be brought up as Catholic. There was never any requirement in the Australian Catholic church that the other partner had to convert. Sometimes people did because the partner or the partner's family preferred it. But not the Church itself. So Steesh Sood - I'm not sure which country you're writing from. People weren't forbidden to marry by the Catholic Church on the basis of religion. Not within the past couple of centruies, anyway. The concern was - as it is in many faiths and cultures - that the couple may have deep divisions between them if they differed in something as fundamental as faith. And certainly many groups, religious and otherwise, prefer that their children marry within their own group.
The First Song I Sang To My Little Lady Patty When I First Met Her At The Tropicana Night Club 1968😍😍😍❤️💕

This has to be his best song
You are my destiny
Oh it certainly is
Neil's biggest hit in Australia, spending seven weeks at Number One on the charts.
Sublime. Cant see that anyone who has known love can hear this without tears
Sedaka handles a difficult issue superbly. One of his greatest recordings from a plethora of hits!
His best song for sure a classic
Absolutely
I still get goosebumps from this song every time I hear it. A life long fan of this man and his music.
What a song 💓💗💖

love Neil Sedaka. I. was only 10 when my older sisters bought this single home.
Beautiful song, beautiful lyrics that pull at the heart-strings
I was born in the year this come out and one of my earliest memories is of my mum singing this to me . . . I cry when i hear this.
This is one of my favourite Sedaka songs. I am lucky to own his version in French that he recorded in Canada. There is another version I have on tape.
fantastic lyrics
I miss you mum 😢
I adore this by my all heart
Agree
Was 1 of my favs growing up in Oz. Now wonder I had a hard time finding it here in USA. Noone had heard of it.
The reason you may find it hard to find is that it was frowned upon in the US, predominately in the south because of the religious connotations.
Is that right?
Yes it was a huge no 1 hit here. 🇦🇺
Top song
I can't find this on Itunes in Canada unfortunately.
I hear there was a Canadian recording in French
great
It is peculiar that you can't find it on Spotify
Recorded in Sydney Aust.
I'm sure "Wheeling West Virginia" was recorded in Sydney.
It was however, Star Crossed Lovers is a US recording.
sweet
This is also on his Live In Australia concert in a medley, but the medley version sounds much nicer.
A No. 1 hit in Australia but surprisingly a flop in the U.S. My mother really liked this song.
A flop because it was herecy to many Americans in the 60s as two different beliefs who developed a relationship were considered sinful.
I think recorded in Australia
Correct. As with "Wheeling West Virginia"
Wheeling West Virginia was. Star Crossed Lovers was not. It is a US recording.
Shouldn't that be 1959??
Is this about interracial relationships??

Different religions
Released in the States and played on the radio in Nov. 1968. Was not any kind of hit though, unfortunately.
