Inside Karen Gillan's Cozy California Cottage | Open Door | Architectural Digest

- Today AD is welcomed to Los Angeles by actor Karen Gillan for a look inside her cozy, pub-like home. The Dr. Who and Marvel Universe star recently moved into the traditional early-1900s cottage with her husband, comedian Nick Kocher, setting out to design their first home together. The couple enlisted Pierce & Ward, an AD100 studio known for creating lived-in spaces with an old-world feel and a dash of glamor. After tearing down a series of bland renovations and adding elegant finishes like built-in bookshelves and wainscotting, the designers got to work. “It’s exactly what I wanted,” says Gillan of her newly decorated home and its traditional two-story layout overlooking a tree-shaded backyard. “I could never live in a modern space because it would kill my energy.”
Karen Gillan reprises her role as ‘Nebula’ in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opening May 5, 2023.

I’m watching this thinking “this kind of looks like a fancy version of an old Scottish granny’s home” and then Karen basically says that’s exactly what it is 😂 Lovely video and such a charming house.
Right! My thoughts exactly. My grandma actually had very similar wallpaper in the fact that had little scenes displayed in it. Her house was I think bigger but the colors still bad that dark deep colors do it looked cozy.

I'd take a cosy home over a massive mansion any day. I'd rather have massive land surrounding the house than a massive house with a lot of empty rooms that you won't use

@@bngr_bngr yh, its small, I think my ideal perfect size is anywhere between 5k to 10k max but as long as the land around it is massive, that's fine. Could do many things with the land surroundings. Good landscaping, play area for the kids, swimming pool and small pool house next to it, tennis and basketball court. Something like that. My family have a place in west malibu cliffside that's 10k Square feet and it isn't too big, with a pool at the back yard, has a secluded cove towards the bottom of the cliff. The cliff even has stairs leading to that cove and then tight at the bottom is the beach that only 4-5 neighbours have access too
Im always amused by American mansions,well houses in general as they tend to be huge but flimsy , they don't look as stable as European..well houses in the UK,more style over substance ... just an observation.
@@omadjourney it depends on the area too. Every city or state has a certain area where the homes have a similar style to Europe or UK
@@mohammedfaiisal yes I've noticed that too,the buildings mimick the European country they are twinned with... there's a lot of German and Swedish architecture but it makes sense if you think about it lol.
Love Karen Gillan - seems so down to earth and great sense of humour. Her home seems like a home not a house. Lots of personality and real - a true reflection of what the owner seems like as opposed to the very sterile same same of a lot of celebrity homes.
Karen is delightful! Very down to earth and genuinely excited about each room in her house. So sweet. Plus we agree that Alice in Wonderland is the best Disney movie, and always will be. :)

Very nice home! Definitely one of my favourites. You can tell it's genuinely her, not just a designer following trends. Would be such a fun place to hang out and visit.

Wow Karen's home really looks like a film set based somewhere in UK, I always used to wonder about how cool those sets where but obviously wasn't real! But her home is exactly that!! So cool and her energy is always so positive and joyfully!! Great watch!
They aren't all Film sets, some are real. For example, all creatures great and small was filmed in a real home. My friend's home has also been used as the home of a protagonist in a film.

Karen Gillan is the funniest, with a quick smartness, down to earth vibe, and I really love her since I saw her in Doctor Who. And talking about vibe, she has this type of Lucy Ball persona around her. I have followed her career through the years, she really has talent: as a comedian, playing the piano, doing her own shorts movies and not missing a step with her wittiness, being as brilliant and funny with very smart and sharp on point actors as The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart. So happy for her.

It looks exactly like tons of New England colonial homes or early American Houses, and granny or cottage core. We are an enormous nation so we don't have one look thank God but I agree It's just not a typical look for LA, someone Karen's age or Hollywood types but she has exceptional taste and good eye I.e. adoring her dad's monopoly art piece. She just likes cottage core and isn't afraid to show it! Timeless is timeless for a reason. She did really well and her bedroom reminds me a little of the Cinderella castle room with the lighting and use of fabrics and molding, etc ...
@@amandachilds5290 What I meant was most of American houses of celebrities that they feature on this channel. Most look the same to me. And yes it looks like tons of New England colonial homes but they have more personality (in my opinion) than those American ones. There's more room to play with the decore.

I'm a southern gal myself so I love Southern living but coastal core is very on trend again as farmhouse finally makes its way out of trend the same way shabby chic did. As an architect, I wish I had clients like this. Who wanted a nice cozy home. Most of them want huge massive houses with these gross open floor plans and big open windows.
