He's the 'tax consultant of love' 😅
Tupac - Do for Love (is the sample you know)
O
"Black people that didn't know Bobby Caldwell was white (reaction)" is one of my favorite sub-genres of UA-cam. The sudden realization, slow acceptance, sentimental reflection, and eventual appreciation is always entertaining.
I love them too but I always doubted the legitimacy of some of the reactions since the music video thumbnail has him in it. Unless they were directly linked the song by someone else, which would bypass the thumbnail in most cases.
This might be my favorite UA-cam comment ever.
@@CatskillsGrrl mai pensato che fosse un ragazzo di colore. La musica non ha colore.
Not to sound racial, but there are a lot of black UA-camrs who think the Bee Gees are black, so Bobby Caldwell isn’t the only talent who is mistaken for black. No offence to anybody, I apologize if I offended anyone.
I can't help but laugh when you said," I don't want to be that guy," but every reactor that has reacted to this song, has been that guy, you're not alone👍😂
I think all of us were "that guy" when we finally saw the video.
Yeah, was gonna say, everybody in America was "that guy."
@@kelleyscorpio nah Asia too Ive herd the song but never knew he was white until like...3 days ago after stumbling across a tiktok
I'm a latino from South América and I was shocked when, a couple of years ago, I saw this video, and realized he was white!
I had that same reaction. You know how you imagine how the person singing looks? I never imagined him being a white guy. Full disclosure, I am white. But I just never knew until a couple years ago Bobby Caldwell was a white dude.
Yes Bobby Caldwell can come to the cookout.
He looks like an archaeologist but he sings like used to jam with George Benson
I'm a huge George Benson fan from right around this era. How did this song just pop into my head today 2024??? And I didn't know either! Hahaha!
An archaeologist 😂😂😂
@@stj971love me some George Benson ❤
Another reaction channel said Indiana Jones 😂
ARCHAEOLOGIST!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rest In Peace, Bobby. He’s invited to every cookout in heaven
😊 *Fun Fact-Bobby Caldwell won “Best New Black Artist in 1978.”* 😊 *RIP Bobby, you will sadly be missed* 💖💖💖
But hes WHITE LOL
@@theodoreritola7641That's the thing thats why his team and producers etc tried to hide his identity, imagine what Identity crisis would the entire soul community would have had when they found out he won the award as a white man? 😂
lol THE SHOCK LOL
love the song and I was around when it was recorded ..today is the 1st time I knew he was white too. I'm also white...lol 😅
I didn’t know that fact. Some say race is a social construct.
Hey, im white .. I've listened to this song since i was a kid and just assumed...🤷♂️
Mind blown.
Beautiful song either way. Soul is Soul.
This is the kind of song that when it comes on the radio, you leave it on no matter how many times you've heard it
I was thinking just that. No many how many times you hear this song you simply don't tire of it. I have the original album, I reckon its also to do with the lyrics as well as the delivery, that massive message of 'What You Won't Do For Love', most of us can relate to, I certainly can. It is a beautiful song with a resonating message
This song is just perfection!! When I play it ,I may repeat it if
for an hour!! But also it might get " stuck " in my head for days!?🥰
Your timing is impeccable. May Bobby now rest in peace. ❤
And now all the reaction videos to the official video is trending as soon as Bobby Caldwell left.
There's video of him at a BET awards performing this song w/ saxophonist Dave Koz. He's introduced, and as he walks on stage there's a bit of a hush, then he started singing, everyone reacted, and then they started singing along. I'm sure that's the first time a lot of the audience had seen what Bobby Caldwell looks like. The label hid how he looked because they were worried that the record wouldn't sell because he was white. Welp, you can see how well the record did, and it's such a classic. Thank you for the reaction to this timeless classic!
Millions 45s and 33s were in homes around the 🌍🌎🌏
The 60's and 70's was the best time for music, without a doubt. Soul doesn't come in a color :) ;)
Yes! Great singer...
We're ALL "that guy" 😅
Lol...took the words right out of my mouth!
Same feeling about the UB40 guy being white lol
I’m a white 19 year old and even I was that guy so anyone who thinks damn that was just a bit racist it really was not😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
R.I.P. Bobby Caldwell. You will be missed!
God bless you Bobby for your great song bro!!
You're parents listened to this song, and 9 months later you were born....
😂
Bobby just died this week, Tuesday March 14, 2023, I am in shock. He was an amazing singer and musician.
Boz Scaggs ,"low down".....another surprising soulful white dude.....Great reaction Polo👍
And Bobby Caldwell wrote "Heart of Mind" which Boz Scaggs sang, and also Bobby.
Yes, definitely.
I had an older cousin who wanted me the hear a White man who sounded Black when this came out. The reactions on people's faces when the realize the identity of Bobby is priceless. You can't judge a book by its cover or the sound . Just like Lady T and Boz Scaggs Black people rocked with Bobby. It was about the soul. RIP Bobby
He played every instrument on this song, including the horns.
In the late 70's, everyone had "seasoning" regardless of your race. This is hilarious. Thanks bruhtha. Made my day.
Loved this reaction! If you wanna be shocked again, listen to "Low Down" by Boz Scaggs!
@Donna Brann I was just gonna suggest that one ! I hope Polo takes a listen.
Another one is Lost Lover by Tuxedo
Bobby Caldwell passed away March14, 2023 from an antibiotic reaction also known as floxed. The link below is from the Soul Train Awards around 2014. Dave Koz toured with Caldwell and other R&B artists. When this song came out in 1979 I had just graduated from college and I flipped my lid. The song was romantic and sexy and I assumed he was black. Caldwell knew he was "the white guy who sang R&B and jazz". BTW I am white!
The link below is the Soul Train Awards in 2014 and cneck out the reaction:

Another example where "the powers that be" have to seperate whites and blacks. WE ARE ALL THE SAME !! Love you !!
Amen, we are all God's children mo matter the color. The Lord does not see color. Maybe we should take a lesson.
OK, I'm white and listened to this song growing up, and I loved it and still do. I never knew he was white either. I blew my mind! WOW, and I always loved this, crazy, so classy..
Bobby wrote this song! Awesome talent. R.I.P. 🙏 ❤️
One of my Fav Blue Eyed Soul Singers/Smooth Jazz Prince's BOBBY CALDWELL has now passed to the other side, Damn that hurts! Now he is doing gorgeous tunes for them.
BOBBY IS GREAT!!!!!! THANKS FOR THE REACTION!!!! rest in peace Bobby!!!!!!
He played EVERY instrument during studio session on this song ! Also wrote and sang, what a talent .
Just came across this video after hearing Bobby Caldwell passed away I'm happy that you discovered him before he passed at least and I was just as shocked as you were trust me LOL the r.i.p. to the legend
Sadly we are losing all the great artist and nothing replacing their talent.
This is one of my absolute favorite ❤
When you get schooled all about the music of the 70s! My era..best music ever! Wouldn’t change it for nothing!! Yes, people could sing..really sing!! Good stuff!! 😊
I totally agree. Man back in the ‘70 there was so many great artists and music. For me there’s no doubt that growing up in the 70’s was the greatest era of music EVER. 60’s-80’s music no other 3 decades come close. Today’s music for the most part is just so boring and bad. It seems that no one can record without auto tune studio recordings and probably live too, with all of this computer generated music. I feel so blessed to have experienced all of that great music in real time; as it was released on the radio and record stores the very first time.
I Knew there was absolutely no way you would have not heard this song before; the question was if you knew the big “surprise” 😂. This will always be one of my favorite songs; it’s perfect, beginning to end. From
Bobby Caldwell has a lot of great music in his catalogue ❤
NEVER judge a book by it' cover!!! We all have SOUL!!! Just ask Jesus!!!
Rest in Peace, Bobby. 🙇🏾♀️🇺🇦
It's not even that he's white - although, seriously!! - he's a goofy looking white guy 😂...... But he gets it, he got it! This song is soooo good!! Horns are always great to hear & the vocals are AMAZING.
Its so sad that Bobby passed away he was a wonderful artist. Check out anything he has done!
Too funny when you said he looked like a tax consultant!!! Thanks for your great reaction. R.I.P. Bobby Caldwell. 🙏🙏
Bobby Caldwell passed away today at 71. RIP 😭
🙏🙏🙏
No only is it so smooth in his sound, but the band nails it... it's complete...❤
No band he played all the inatruments himself for the original tract which is why the video shows him on several instruments. Straight talent!! ❤🔥🔥🔥
Bobby Caldwell just passed away today.
RIP Bobby . You will be missed 🙏
RIP Bobby 🙏
One of my favorite songs played during the holidays has been...'Baby It's Cold Outside' ( with Vanessa Williams & Bobby Caldwell ) Watch the video of them singing that....& the dude sounds even more black.
I’ve gotta check that out
That was excellent. I wouldn’t have recognized him if his name wasn’t listed as the singer
Oh, I love that video with Vanessa! His vocals are perfection and it doesn’t get in better than that!
Also, Bobby’s version of “Don’t Ask My Neighbor” which I believe he did with the ladies who sang the original hit. Perfection once again!!!
agreed! best version of that song, ever. period.
RIP Bobby Caldwell.
RIP Bobby Caldwell passed away at 71
Some of us have Soul Dude. You can hear the heart. I have danced to lots of the music you're showing . Thank you so very much.
They say soul has NO color!!
@@proudarmymom8657 Truth. Absolutely 💯
Bobby Caldwell just passed away today. :(
RIP, Bobby
RIP BOBBY CALDWELL 🎶 💖
And 9 days later... RIP Bobby. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
He played nearly every instrument in the song, may he RIP
This song’s one of my all time favorites. It’s just sounds so good. Just goes to show Soulful singing knows no color. Over the years I’ve had white guys with a soulful voice and I’ve come across a Chinese guy with a soulful voice. The world lost a great soulful singer last year. RIP Bobby Caldwell. Your God given gift is so appreciated. 🙏🏾🎼🎼🎼🎼
Saw him live many years after this song came out and he was on point! Same night with him was Tower of Power. A night I will always treasure ❤
He's got a hell of a voice and can SANG!
🤣😂🤣! Love it! I enjoy watching your reactions to these videos. I'm a 56yo white man. I grew up listening to Soul, R&B, Funk, disco and Rap music in NC. When I started living a devoted Christian life I fell in love all over again with Christian Rap and Gospel. I've heard it said a true music lover, loves all kinds of music. I believe that.
Thanks for sharing this review with us!
I'm from NC too!
oes to show you, color means nothing to the non ignorant...talent is appreciated where ever it come's from. Peace and love to you and yours always !
When he was a young man growing up in Maimi, his mother was Bob Marley's realtor and Mr. Marley became one of Bobby's early musical influences.
Rest in peace Mr. Caldwell
Another great blue-eyed soul surprise...Lisa Stansfield, "All Around The World"....must check out!❤️
Listen to Open Your Eyes from Bobby Caldwell ♥️✨ He was a true talent, Rest in Peace 🙏🏾💕🎶
Blue-eyed soul
Bobby wrote this song & did his own background vocals also.
There is a great album call Soul Survivor by Bobby Caldwell. There isn’t a bad song on it! And if you’re into jazz standards he did another great album called Come Rain or Come Shine. Great reaction! Thanks🦚
I love the Earth, Wind, and Fire groove on this song!!!❤
This brings back my high school years, growing up in Philly . I had no idea what he looked like, either 😁 Thank you, Polo! Love your channel!
Philly here
In 1979 he was nominated by Billboard " Best New black artist " He lost when Billboard and the world found out he was white. He also played all of the instruments in this song.
A CLASSIC!!✌🏾
I like how he comes out the darkness like “Gotcha Bitch”🤣
I love that you seeing his face says alot
I had this original album and knew he was white from the beginning, love me some Bobby C! Another blue-eyed soul artist that had some hits in the '80s was Grayson Hugh. Talk It Over reached #19 in 1988 and is a really good track. Cheers!
My favorite❤
Polo, you should hear his “Big Band” music. The man was simply a musical genius and GREAT performer in concert.
R.I.P. BOBBY 😥 Thank you!
SOMEBODY…PLEASE give that bassist a raise 😂
Rip Bobby C.
Love this song!!! Bobby rocked the heck out of this song. I used to think it was sung by a black artist until recently.
Bobby Caldwell Open Your Eyes sampled by Common.
RIP, Bobby. Thank you for this video, a sweet tribute.
I just have to come out and say it is really entertaining to watch other people have their own Bobby Caldwell moment. I most certainly had one myself! I'm willing to guess that somewhere in his heritage that he has some soul. There's no way a voice that smooth doesn't have some soul in it somewhere.
Wanna hear a dude who uses hot sauce on everything? Listen to Boz Scaggs' Lowdown or JoJo. 🔥
Right? He puts hot sauce on his hot sauce! 🌶
Just about any track from that _Silk Degrees_ album is worth listening to.
I love this song 😊
Love older jazz songs.
Guess we all danced to this. Dancing now. Thanks for this.
Hey, I was that guy. Since this song dropped in the late 70s, I was under the impression that Bobby was a black guy. I didn't find out he was white until he passed away and I came to UA-cam to listen to this song. I think my jaw literally fell on the floor.
RIP Bobby Caldwell! He just passed last week.
❤LOVE BOBBY CALDWELL
One of my all-time fav songs!
R.I.P Bobby Caldwell!!!
wild cause Bobby Caldwell passed away yesterday..
Thankfully we’ve been left with his art🙌🏽
Legendary, American treasure. Black American Music became Universal, that's great. He's not the only one, white soul musician in the USA, there were many in the 70's/80's, interactions of races and styles were happening, you'd hear to black rock groups too. Maybe because I'm 52 this is normal to me.
I love USA music, and I think there's a sort of white R&B branch that is very interesting, like Toto, Hall and Oats, Steely Dan, Michael Mcdonald, Ambrosia, in the UK Level 42, The Blow Monkeys, etc.
Amazing artist. He was sampled by Tupac and Common
Excellent reaction!!! Great song. Tons of soul. He sounds great live, as well.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs❤
Very talented man, plays the guitar, piano and sings! Many other reactors refer to him as "Indiana Jones." I guess because of the hat, lots of talent!
Listen, I’m 53 years old. Been around for a while and listen to a lot of music for a while and this is one of my favorite songs of all time! Such a vibe!
2024 I'm 58 listened to this song when I was 14 thought this guy was black...I thought I knew it all...damn I'm loving this song all over again...
I literally watch every reaction to this song JUST for the moment people get hit with that realization. You straight up STOPPED! 😂
Oh and RIP Mr Caldwell. We lost a good one this year.
RIP 🙏 Bobby Caldwell came across your vid today
Bobby played every instrument, long live bobby
My skepticism radar is going off... at this point, everyone knows... still glad to hear the song :)
He just died the other day. R.I.P. Bobby!
1:40 - YES!! I was WAITING for your reaction to The Big Reveal!! 😂 Trust me, I'm White, and heard this song being played over and over again between 1978 and 1982, and I literally only found out that Bobby Caldwell was White right after he died in March of this year. (That was when I first saw the video.) So, no, you're not alone. 😄 Literally EVERYBODY thought this guy was Black. Pretty amazing singer, wasn't he??
Haha, Bobby got soul, good jam yeah, good review yeah 👍😎🤘🎸🥁🎤🎶
Surprise lol
I think you would enjoy Boz Skaggs. Now there is some really great music .
Rule of thumb: whenever you hear a Hip Hop hit, automatically Google “where was it sampled from”
This dude has been sampled a few times. For example, he did a track called “Open Your Eyes” which was used by Common, in their single “The Light”
2Pac sample from him as well.
