I shot a lot of it of my little boy and Martin B. Developed it, color film, 20+ years ago. Then I collected a bunch of those cameras and magazines to use in art classes.
They really are a neat and easy way to shoot 8mm.

Great video, though it is beyond me. I would struggle in the light, never mind the darkness. I must admit it got really trippy when Mike was talking over Mike. You were just checking if we were awake and paying attention.
Haha, thanks for noticing :) To be honest, I have no idea how that happened. I somehow overlaid a clip on top of another and it wasn't even the right clip, blah blah, haha. I didn't realize it until after uploading. I have since done a bit of deleting, but it's still weird, hehe.

Very interesting... . One corner of Regular 8mm that I have never explored is magazine film. Thanks for the education and information. I'm like you in that I always think of this film in terms of 50' rolls because that's what it yields when finished. Correctly it is just 25' of 16mm with extra perforations that is split and joined at the end. Please keep talking about regular 8mm film magazine and otherwise, it is such a fun little format. Yes, I could not stop saying 50', haha. So used to the 16mm cartridges.
I almost emailed you yesterday, but I found a Minolta Zoom 8 in my closet a couple days ago (no idea when or where I got it), got it out, looks new, cleaned the battery contacts a little and it works perfectly. I also disassembled both of my small Bolex 8mm cameras (B8L and D8L) and cleaned/re-lubed them and they are both purring like lions now!! Can you tell I'm a little excited? I'll be putting some film through all of them shortly, wish me luck!

I have 3 magazines. I use the leading and trailing ends of the original film as templates for the cuts needed for the magazine spools. When I cut those I have already reversed the film onto a spare 8mm spool then put it in the film can (in total darkness of course) with about 6" of film sticking out then gaffer tape the can closed. It will put a crease in the film but you can iron it out with your fingers before you load it into the magazine.

Hey Michael, not yet, though I did just finish shooting 25' through a couple of Bolex D8 cameras. Planning to order more film to load up some mags soon.

@@MichaelCarter I've shot a couple mags that I've loaded in the last couple years but nothing overly recent. My problem is, I have so much film and cameras and so many projects going at once that it can be daunting finding time sometimes.
What do you do to send the exposed film for developing? Does it need to be on a factory spool?
If you're shooting it on one of these magazines, you would typically send the whole magazine in. You would need to find someone that processes them first.
@@Filmboy24 I should have asked if you respool it for processing, I am fairly certain any lab I send my magazine to isn't going to send it back, Film Photography Project is very clear about this, and crazy expensive.
@@tobroken1965 I don't really spool these for people, as I'd feel terrible if they didn't work right for you. I do process and scan them and would send the cartridge back as well if requested. Email me (filmboy24@gmail.com) if you're interested.

can these magazines take single perf 16mm film? I can't find any information on this. It does seem like it would be more difficult to line up those notches with the hole punch
Unfortunately, they are not designed to take single perf film. I've tried a few things and nothing works.

Is there any way to tell if the film has been shot in the 8mm cartridge?
With these 8mm magazines, the only sure way is to pull it and process it. You can sometimes tell if it's been 1/2 exposed, as the weight of the film inside will be on the left when side 1 is face up.
I had no issues with my magazine whatsoever until recently. It seems I cannot get the lid of the magazine to close, almost like one of the pins isn't lining up. Do you happen to know what the issue could be/have you run into this yourself?
Hmmm, not sure what the issue could be. Make sure the roller spindles are oriented the right way, that could certainly cause some issues.
Does this have to be done in the dark or can it be done in light?
This all has to be done in total darkness.
@@Filmboy24 thank you for letting me know. I noticed you were refilling the magazine with 100ft reels cut into the 25ft. Would it be possible to reload the magazine with regular 25ft spools instead?
Could someone 3D print a cartridge that takes regular spools?
Possibly but that would definitely take some work.
I wonder if someone with a 3d scanner could just scan both sides of the magazine and start from there.. @@Filmboy24
do they even make spools small enough to fit in there? I feel like I've never seen one that small@@Filmboy24
