A Portrait on Jamie Thomas

- The skate legend opens up in our new film.
From the outside looking in, it would appear as though Jamie Thomas always had his shit together. Notoriously disciplined and driven, few have left an indelible mark in skateboarding like the Chief. As a pro skater, filmer, editor, brand builder, entrepreneur, and designer, Jamie has built a legacy on being meticulous, laser focused, and detail-oriented that hasn’t been matched since his meteoric rise to the top. If you grew up skating in the ’90s or 2000s, there’s a very solid chance that Jamie was your favorite skater and Zero was your favorite brand. Hell, even Graham Coxon, guitarist of Blur, wrote a song called “Jamie Thomas” at the height of their collective fame.
Now approaching 50 with a new perspective on balance and life, Jamie reflects on his decades of experience, acknowledging that his obsessiveness was actually a self-destructive coping mechanism-a fatal flaw preventing him from being the well rounded family man he’s become today. That’s isn’t to say he’s not still completely obsessed with everything he does. It’s just that he’s learned to compartmentalize his time in order to live a more balanced and fulfilled life.
Don’t think you’ll see him slow down anytime soon, though. As he says, “I don’t really think about retirement. I don’t want to just sit somewhere. That sounds like purgatory. I just want to keep learning and growing.” Without further ado, we’re proud to present A Portrait on Jamie Thomas, a short film about Jamie in 2022. The good, the bad, the Chief.

I love this guy
I love this guy ^
You the man John. It feels good to have found good enough.
One of the fucking GOATS. I'm sure i'm not alone when I say I wouldn't be the skateboarder I am today without The Chief.
Jamie had a profound effect on my life despite having never met him in person. He's my all time fav skateboarder and despite never having become a great skateboarder I spent countless hours in my own pursuit of self-regulation rolling in carparks around the place. I don't skate much anymore but I've taken those lessons into the rest of my life and I'm richer for it. Thanks Jamie! Thankyou all the skateboards that got me there over the years.
Proud to be a Jamie Thomas fan for over 20 years. Always wanted to work for him (as a photographer) or any of his companies...
I can still dream.
ask him to film The Leap
Same
@@lovebug9696 he did that leap, and who wants to get paralyzed for nothing.
I met Jamie in 1997 at Woodward and he was a super cool person, I’ve messaged him recently and he still remembers details of those conversations. Jamie is a great person!
Jamie is an inspiration in so many ways. Positivity breeds Positivity!
One of my biggest influences growing up a little skate rat. Love he's still ripping it
He's my fav growing up him and Reynolds inspired me so much
“Repent: for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:2
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.” John 3:36
“You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”” Hebrews 3:13-15 NLT

dying to live was my first tape when i started getting into skating. since then been a fan or zero and everything else blackbox did. new blood, ride the sky, strange world, radio television era was so influential to me.
Straight up legend zero will be iconic in skateboarding as long as it’s around
Good to hear the words of wisdom from a dude like Jamie. Gives us older dudes hope.
Gave me chills. Thanks Jamie, for always being a positive influence on the misled youth. I love being reminded of appreciating every moment. You made my day today. Thanks for the video 🙏🏻
Rad, thanks for the kind words
it was Jamie Thomas that got me into skating. he had so much authority on his board, and fearless. watching this, I can see why I was drawn towards him back in the day.
Absolute legend, I am in my 40's now and as a kid he was like a god to me.
since i was like 16 Jamie Thomas was one of my favorite skaters to watch, because of him i even bought a board and learned skateboarding, now i'm 32 and still Jamie is my favorite, Zero all the way yoooo (i haven't boarding no more in years but it tickles again after watching this )
Very inspirational still to this day, what a great dude. The "leap of faith" had this almost God tier ring to it growing up skateboarding.
Thank you..
Inspired me on a skateboard 20 years ago, now doing the same as a father. Well done Jamie, it’s great to see.
Just thinking about the Rio Mall rail in Atlanta all of those years ago... So rad to see you still shredding and thanks for all of the great memories!!!
Sk8 or Die!
One of my biggest inspirations growing up. Thank you for this.
I remember sitting around an old boxy tv, popping in a VHS tape and watching skaters like Jamie Thomas rip for hours. It's amazing and inspiring to see features on skaters like Jamie who are doing this years later - and are still successful. And when I say successful I don't mean lots of money, but living a fulfilled life with kids and work while still doing what they love. Back when I skated as a kid/teenager I always thought someday I would get out of shape, too tired or too lazy to be into it. I'm in my thirties now and am able to still get out there (and now bring my kid along with me). This was an awesome blast from the past and I'm happy to see he's doing well.
Discipline is freedom. I found that out a couple of years back. The ability to reign in and direct your whims and not the other way around. Jamie Thomas is one of the OG raddest dudes when I used to watch his, at the time, insane shit on tape. Paved the way for a lot of the daredevils on wheels nowadays. Rowley and Boulala too. Rock on.
This piece is amazing!
I stepped out of my car in Hamburg 20 years ago,
And ruuuuums Jamie landed in front of me a huge gap. Never forget that. Didn’t know that there was a demo, came out of nowhere.
From being one of the gnarliest dudes to step on a skateboard to being a dad staring love at his daughter for their pinky swear while she’s being the typical teen and trying to run out the door…
What a great fucking video…so well done.
So inspiring. Jamie is the best.
Legend! My fav skater growing up! Even got the zero skull as a tattoo on my leg.
Beautifully edited fellas! Great job! God Bless!
My biggest influence on my skateboarding style since the early 2000s along with Rodney Mullen
Thank you sir!! I needed THIS!
Stoked for you Jamie.. we had some fun sessions back in 93-94. You’ve come a long way, friend..
Great work! Jamie always inspires and it’s great seeing that translate not only from skating but to family and general life beyond skating as well. 👏🏼
cool man, ten years ago when i watch zero and mystery tapes, Jamie was completely differend man. Very very cool when people dont get older inside, they took all their experience and keep body in good shape, this is like new life // Respect, very inspiring
Great piece..keep the good times rollin Chief
The goat!! Glad I grew up watching this man skate.
Crazy to see this guy still ripping! 411VM days!!! Great memories!
Great glimpse into the life of a legend.
Great video. Geat dude.
Thanks for sharing.
Was an honor meeting Jamie at faith skate supply in Birmingham. Even cooler he knew who my cousins were from Dothan
the man the myth the legend. for sure he cemented his name in this world and as a JT fan since i first played the first thps game back in the day, i’ve been a fan. keep up the PMA!
Just wish these classic companies we all love would start manufacturing their decks in North America again. Honestly the decks I’ve gotten lately have been pressed in china and they go to crap quick. Dude kinda inspires me to actually start a board company. I use to love Zero, use to have his shoes too they were totally sick.
What a fu***ing good vid! -very inspiring and wise words from a Skateboarder who grew older and dealing with Stuff coming by!! ❤
I had that fallen tattoo photo on my wall in my room. Legendary.
I was a low level sreet BMX rider. Jaime Thomas was who I wanted to "ride" like. Pop in Welcome to Hell in the VCR, get psyched and filmed 2 really good video parts and clips in other videos and stuff on HAVOC T.V. I didn't travel with my boys, who became bigger, paid, well known pros because I went to college. I rode for Wiz's team, Resist. Jaime Thomas was always my inspiration. Street riding was still pretty new when we got into the game. The BMX video Anthem came out, and we were 15 doing the stuff that the pros were doing, plus some. I'm 40 now, I haven't ridden seriously since 2008 because of injuries. But Jaime Thomas, being 48 and still doing it. I'll go get a cheap mongoose at Walmart and put a good back wheel and decent handle bars on it and start slow. I think I have enough left in me to put out a good mid school style video part. New school street is kind of boring to watch in my opinion. Everyone rides the same. There will never be another Van Homen, Ed DeLarossa, Vic Ayala, Brian Wizmerski or even another me. I invented grinds, so I made my mark even if no one knows it.
My favorite skater as a grom poster on the wall zero legend
Favorite skater of all time. He definitely deserves to be on the Mt Rushmore of skaters
Jamie Thomas has always been my favorite skater
My favorite skater of all time
THANK YOU JAMIE !
This is really well done.
dude should write a book about his amazing life!
love!
Amazing man.
a real LIVING LEGEND
Wise words from an absolute legend 🙌
He is and always will be one of the greatest! (I'm sure his teenage daughter still considers him a dork, and I'm quite sure he's fine with that)
Will always be my favorite skater.
Legendary parts,inspirational human
Thank you for this good video
I think Jamie’s pursuit of perfection and striving to be his best is the secret of life. It’s not an unhealthy thing at all. The fact that he was so regimented and disciplined early on, allowed him the fortune of being able to not just see what time he has left for what, but being able to allocate his time to those pursuits specifically while being his own master. I’ve always been disciplined myself, but sadly easily distracted. If I had just had held onto the focus that much longer… now I’m 40 trying to refocus after letting society and all in it try to tell me where I was supposed to focus for over the last 20 years. I also love this idea of doing the physical work ti maintain and keep freedom. I know all about it, as it’s my routine that has me progressing at surfing at 40 after delaying that goal for 2 decades. I don’t bring my foam rollers to the beach to do my body maintenance though…then again I’m not a legendary skater like Jaime, whom by doing so might actually get through to the kids around him.
You don’t have to be a legendary skater to be a rad influence on kids, most people think you stop performing after a certain age so being older and still pushin yourself is inspiring in itself. You’d be surprised at how much kids look up to just that, and if ya can teach em respect and kindness in the process you’re a local legend in its own way.
A true legend in skateboarding and life

Best street skater hands down

I met Jamie at the Brooklyn Banks once, he was with one of the Galls (Fred or Alex). He was a really nice guy and as everyone sat down to watch them skate, I put up a trash can and yelled at an everyone to skate ahs represent New York and not sit on their fucking boards! Gotta be New York tough sometimes! Circa 2002/2003.
An ispirational man!
Legends for an Eternity.
Raisf the bar, left an epic mark

Great video, love the Chief! Shouldn't the title read "A portrait of" instead of "A portrait on"???

Hey, I was wondering what the name of the first two songs are? You mentioned the last song in the description but I've been trying to find out the first two instrumental type tracks. Thank you for any help on this!
Hey man, they are stock songs found on Epidemic Sound
@@jordanlovelis Hey thanks so much for the reply. Any idea what I might type in to find them? For example, ambient, dramatic etc?
Dude was my hero as a teen. He's the reason i rode zero
