Love the paint pans. I would have never thought of that. You could keep a couple of extra pans hanging around. Incase you need to clean the pans out and don't have time. Quick and easy, just switch them out. Thanks, going to use this idea.
Thank you for the simple and cheap yet elegant and effective solution. Overnight I have gone from collecting broken and dirty eggs to perfect pristine eggs.
Excellent excellent excellent! :-) I have some of the commercially bought rollaway nesting boxes and after watching this video I kick myself for what I paid for them when I saw how easy it was to set up the one that you have. Brilliant design great video! Only wish I had seen it before I bought the other boxes. :-)
I'm just finding this now as I am researching how to design and build my first coop and this is definitely the *easiest* idea I am stumbled upon so far for the roll-away system! I don't know anything about construction but I am planning a pallet coop build and I am absolutely going to try this! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for this video! We have been having an egg eating problem for awhile now, and we slapped some paint trays in the nesting box this afternoon, modified the box like you show, and had an egg roll down behind the board in no time. What a great, easy fix.
I’ve been looking for an easy inexpensive way to solve this problem as well! Your’s is by far the best I’ve seen on UA-cam! Thank you so much for sharing!
This is Genius! I can't wait to fix our poopy egg problem with these. Thankfully they don't eat the eggs, but this should keep them clean instead of covered in feces...
if they can roost/perch higher than the nesting box, they won't sleep in the nesting box. Excellent way to keep them safe and clean. We use a trap door so the eggs roll to the exterior of the coop in two that we made and in the one that existed prior to us living here, I simply moved the boxes down and the perch at a higher point on the other side of the coop and voila. Really like your design.
I never thought of that. That makes sense. We no longer raise laying hens, but maybe your advice will help out someone else watching. Great tip. Thanks for stopping by.
Great, cheap solution! Thank you, I've been dealing with this for more than a whole season. I've tried every wives tale method. The only one that helped was ceramic eggs but a neighbor collected them all while we were on vacation and never brought them back. Must have been tasty; hard to crack though.
Fantastic idea.. I’ve been looking to a solution to my similar problem. I did not want to spend the high dollar for one of the roll away nesting boxes..Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the video. Very slick system. One of my hens just started laying now at 4 months old. Totally caught me off guard and didn't have the nesting boxes. Just noticed a dozen eggs sitting in the coop the other morning and one was broken and eaten. Someone layed one last night too and it was eaten. I am building nesting boxes today and will give this a try.
love your use of the paint trays. very smart. I like that you son't have to worry about cutting wood at angles, and the trays keep you boxes pretty clean. Hope you don't mind if I use your idea!?!?!?
I only have three hens and one is eating 1 egg a day! A third of my product!! Thank you so much i need one of these! Id like to have a two lady box with a roll away egg box :-)
In 2017 I had to live without refrigeration. When I gathered eggs each day, I would pencil the date of the gathering on the eggs. No need to fret over which egg was oldest. (Room temperature eggs can be safely kept for a week) I fed my family on homegrown eggs that year.
As soon as Harvey rolls out and it dries off I am headed out back to do the same thing. I have an outside door to my nest boxes so I will slant mine the other direction but same principle. thanks so much for posting this video!
I watched a lot roll away nest box videos, this looks like the easiest to build & clean. Many of the others do not look like a nest chickens would want to lay in. These also look so easy to clean. I am going to reverse the roll direction so I can gather the eggs form outside the coop.
What I was referring to was that if you built or used the type where the eggs would come out the back so that one would not have to go into the house to collect eggs. Have since set up one and found that it works on the multi metal style, and that it is a lot less expensive than buying the inserts at $10 to $15 each. Which for a set of 12 gets to be quite expensive, and the existing elevation foot hooks over an existing bar and holds them in.
Thank you. I have a problem with a big black snake and hoping that by moving them down and out of sight it will keep them somewhat safe. I may need to make mine go through a longer chute but the joker is so smooth at avoiding me so I only see it on the camera.
I’m in several chicken groups on Facebook. Any time someone posts about their chickens eating their eggs I put the link to this video on their posts. Many many have thanked me for it. Hate to see that Ta Fishman hasn’t put up any videos for years.
Are you giving chickens crushed oyster shells...it improves the strength of egg shells not so easy to break. I love that paint tray idea i will try it.
This video is short and simple and right to the point. I hate a video where the person likes to talk too much instead of getting to work. The inside idea is great! I had planned to put my egg collection door on the outside, but this idea is better. Plus I am enlarging my chicken coop so I can get inside from time to time with my small tiller and constantly disrupt the Rat tunnels that we have to deal with here in Utah. You see, we Never had Rat problems before, until a housing boom started several years ago. And in every direction of the compass they are taking up every open space with housing projects, and where do all the Rats run to? Inward to the center of the circle, and that's us! So we have been overrun with Huge Rats. Not the typical little field mice that the chickens would normally eat, But Huge! Huge!! Rats! The size of small dogs! I had built a nice PVC and clear Plastic Corrugated Sheeting green house and chicken coop, but then the Rat invasion came, and we had to abandon growing things like strawberries and beets in the green house because the Rats ate everything. Even the corn that we've tried to grow, they just climb up and eat it all! So I've turned the whole green house over to the chickens and tore out the plant shelving so I can get in there with my tiller and disrupt the Rat tunnels. But my original chicken coop was too short to get into with the tiller, so I am going to take it down and construct a new one that I can get into and also incorporate these roll away indoor boxes. Too bad my little 'Chicken Ranch' house has to go. Designed after the 'Best Little Whore House in Texas' house. I thought it kind of fitting. Thanks for this video friend! This video was not acceptable. You need a one minute or more into. You also need loud music when you are talking or you need music so loud that the viewer cannot hear you. You need multiple close up photos of your own face, along with video of children, dogs, cats, spouse ... You never need to verify that an idea actually works with updates. All in all, this was an excellent video. Clear, concise and to the point. Thumbs up.
Unfortunately we no longer raise chickens. Maybe someone else who has done it can answer your questions. I can tell you that we had no problems in the 1 1/2 years we used them. Thanks for stopping by.
Well thank you for that I have a chicken eating its egg. So far it seems to only eat its own egg so I am off to the paint shop to see it I can organise a roll away system like yours Thank you.
ta fishman thank you! I ended up buying gorilla glue spray adhesive but almost got liquid nail. I was afraid it would leave visible lines under the Astro turf.
Unfortunately I have not raised chickens for the past 4 years, but the two years I used those pans was all good, no issues, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
How did the carpet last from them scratching? Mine wore through the carpet in 2 days! I now have some really poultry mats on order off Amazon. Hopefully they last longer.
I used them for about a year and a half before ending my chicken raising experience. I never noticed any issues with them scratching them. Thanks for visiting.
Thanks, I'd love to tell you the dimensions but that's a family secret. (LOL) I really can't remember the dimensions. all I did was go out and buy a few trays, measure them and go from there. I hope it all works out for ya.
Love the paint pans. I would have never thought of that. You could keep a couple of extra pans hanging around. Incase you need to clean the pans out and don't have time. Quick and easy, just switch them out. Thanks, going to use this idea.
We're New York City chicken "farmers," who ran across this problem. Your solution worked perfectly! Thanks so much!
Is it still working perfectly?
Paint roller pans with astro turf - BRILLIANT! Thanks for sharing your improvements to making a good nesting box.
Eureka!
Thank you for this wonderfully easy and economical way of increasing our egg production.
Our egg peckers owe you their lives😂
😂😂
Thank you for the simple and cheap yet elegant and effective solution. Overnight I have gone from collecting broken and dirty eggs to perfect pristine eggs.
Yaakov, your very welcome. Thanks for stopping by.
Removable pan, easy to clean; thought of everything! That's a great design!
Excellent excellent excellent! :-)

What have you discovered since then?
That is THE coolest video I've seen yet for a great nesting box design.
I’ve been looking for an easy inexpensive way to solve this problem as well! Your’s is by far the best I’ve seen on UA-cam! Thank you so much for sharing!
This was an excellent idea. Thank you for the suggestion. The astroturf was a stroke of genius.
BRILLIANT! One of those things that I say; why didn't I think of this!?Thanks you for posting!!!
Been watching quite a number of the egg rolling nest boxes. This is great. Simple and easy for most folks to make.
This is Genius! I can't wait to fix our poopy egg problem with these. Thankfully they don't eat the eggs, but this should keep them clean instead of covered in feces...
Love the paint trays! Awesome idea!

I bought my paint pans today after seeing your vid.
Great design! I think I’m going to try it.
Genius! I love the paint pan idea!
This is really clever. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I've wondered for a while if this would work, I viewed thousands of video's and you're the first to do it. Thanks, I'll try it .
The best ideas are so simple. Thanks for posting!
Damn, the paint trays and astro turf is absolutely genius idea
Great, cheap solution! Thank you, I've been dealing with this for more than a whole season. I've tried every wives tale method. That happened to me too, only mine were sold so I had to call everyone who bought eggs and explain my petsitter's goof
Fantastic idea.. I’ve been looking to a solution to my similar problem. I did not want to spend the high dollar for one of the roll away nesting boxes..Thank you for posting.
Paint pans and old carpet! Brilliant! Thank you!
Simple and easy!! Just what I needed. Thank you ❤️
Thanks for the video. Very slick system. One of my hens just started laying now at 4 months old. Totally caught me off guard and didn't have the nesting boxes. Clever idea with the paint tray. The video is nice, too...short and too the point. Thank you.
Great idea! Thank you. I wanted a roll away but didn’t want them in a metal box!!! That carpet should do the trick!!!
Great idea,I’ll be making this as a reverse roll out to gather the eggs from the outside of pen.great idea!
You showed a great idea how to make a nest! Thank you!
love your use of the paint trays. very smart. I like that you son't have to worry about cutting wood at angles, and the trays keep you boxes pretty clean. Hope you don't mind if I use your idea!?!?!?
Best idea I've seen so far! Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad i came upon this video! it's just what I've
been looking for

Good advice, thanks for sharing and stopping by.
Great idea! Thanks, Cave Johnson.
Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
You sir, are a genius!
As soon as Harvey rolls out and it dries off I am headed out back to do the same thing. I have an outside door to my nest boxes so I will slant mine the other direction but same principle. thanks so much for posting this video!
Very good idea, greatings from Poland :)

Thats exactly what i was thinking!!!
Did it work yo reverse the tray?

That’s brilliant. Simple cheap solution.

Great idea. This is a honey do for my wife so I'm sure the expenditure will be fine with her.
Awesome 👏 thank you
He sounds just like Wilford Brimley
That is a great adaptation.
Are you giving chickens crushed oyster shells...it improves the strength of egg shells not so easy to break. I love that paint tray idea i will try it.
Do you put any bedding in them?
Nice nice nice I am going to do this at my sons new place
I liked his Rabbit video with Midnight

should have kept your comment short and simple and right to the point

LOL. Love it
How about an update, turf still attached (from cleaning)? Chickens still using it? Chickens eating the adhesive or turf? Chickens sleeping in nests?
Unfortunately we no longer raise chickens. Maybe someone else who has done it can answer your questions. I can tell you that we had no problems in the 1 1/2 years we used them. Thanks for stopping by.
this is genius!

Glad to help out. But don't use the spay adhesive it lets go after a couple weeks. I ended up using liquid nails "problem solved" good luck.
How did you adhere the Astro turf to the paint tray? I was thinking spray adhesive or liquid nail? E6000 glue?
Missy Taylor I tried spray adhesive but it didn’t hold for very long. I ended up using liquid nails. Good luck.
ta fishman thank you! I ended up buying gorilla glue spray adhesive but almost got liquid nail. I was afraid it would leave visible lines under the Astro turf.
That’s so clever!!!
Very nice very nice
So it’s been 6 years how are you liking it and how does the indoor outdoor carpet working out is it easy to clean and does it hold up well

Nice.
Bella y sencilla idea. Creo que la idea es una consecuencia de alimentarse con huevos sanos.
Good idea..
Would it also work if the eggs were rolling to the back instead?
brilliant......
ah, excellent... !!
Genius!
That's so cool
this is an awesome idea! The paint tray is genious! I will hopefully be converting my boxes to this. Can you tell me the dimensions of your boxes?
Thanks, I'd love to tell you the dimensions but that's a family secret. (LOL) I really can't remember the dimensions. all I did was go out and buy a few trays, measure them and go from there. I hope it all works out for ya.
Little bigger than the size of the tray :)
