    YES!
    I hear so many people say they can’t play the piano because their hands are too small. But I have small hands.
    It can be done. Yes, it’s a little harder, but there are things you can do to make playing easier.

    I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that has to 'cheat" by playing octaves at the very tip of the keys like that. I have smaller hands and for me, trying to play the octave over the keys, I usually hit the second or seventh key while playing the octave over the top of the keys. Even then, it's still a stretch for me.

      This subject is always approached with the same excuses but the truth is that size matters. You can use as many trick/maneuver as you want, keeping other variables under control, if you had a greater reach, in addition to being less prone to injuries, you would have a greater performance. This is physics! Usain Bolt took advantage of the height and greater leg-to-body ratio and Michael Phelps also took advantage of the length of his arms and torso. Likewise, all pianists with long, thin fingers also have an advantage. This doesn't mean you can't play the piano, and if you're really good, you might even be able to play better than most, but that's until you find someone who is equally good but has a physical advantage. Just accept this fact, stop crying and if you really love to play piano, study/train as much as possible with wich you literally have at hand.

    yes, hand size does matter if you are going for virtuoso. It is impossible to keep your hands relaxed while playing rapid octaves or ninths if you have small hands. your best bet is to find a smaller-sized piano of some sort if possible.

    Fun fact. It’s not the hand that are the problem it’s the keys. The reason why Chopin and Beethoven were so good is be cause the keys were smaller or they just made them the right size for there hands. “Music basics” another pianest did a documentary on the keyboard with narrower sized keys . Now you don’t have to feel bad if you can’t play Beethoven ridiculously hard pieces.

    • @88steps81
      @88steps81 Рік тому +11

      That's the issue. Of course we can try rolling, jumping, swaping or skipping notes but that's not best solution. Keyboard size is discussed way less that it should. I can't belive that PASK managed to get only ~2k votes for their initiative that might bring the subject of changing standard 6.5 keyboard to the light

    • @orebelo
      @orebelo 2 місяці тому

      Well, that's not true, or at least not quite true. Piano keyboard sizes used to vary before becoming a de facto standard (165 mm per octave) in the late 19th century, but to a small degree. They generally varied between 158 and 165 mm. This helps a little, but for a modern 23.5mm key, 7mm at most for the entire octave is still not significant. If you read somewhere that the octave of Chopin's piano is equal to 6 white keys on the modern piano, it's miss information.

    Thank you! Not only am I short, but I also have small hands, and I hate both! I can reach an octave by playing at the edge of the keys, but many times (especially, playing fast), I also hit the adjacent keys. Also, even if I can make a stretch to play a chord, my 2, 3 or 4 fingers cannot always play the notes between fingers 1 and 5. Maybe I'm just not flexible. There's no way I can play even an easy version of Moonlight Sonata. Love your videos. By the way, your voice many times goes softer, and I have to keep backing up to listen again. Maybe that's just me as I've never seen anyone mention this.

You can do it.” I don’t have the shortest finger i have very long fingers but they are fat hahahaha!!! Good for playing piano but this doesn’t mean at all like you stated on the video that someone with short fingers can’t play. I always tell people don’t tell yourself you can’t because you probably won’t do it. Tell yourself you can. Their is a will their is a way. Great video Lisa!!! Keep it up. Or the other thing I get too from people is they wil say “oh. You have great piano playing hands, but I don’t have the fingers like you do to play.” That gets me very time. I say back to them. “Yes. You can do it you just have to bee determined and willing to put forth effort and good hard work.” Doesn’t matter the finger length. Hahahaha!!

    My pinkies are really under developed. All my fingers are curved and the tendons between my pinky and ring finger are so under developed that I can't reach the octave even playing on the edges without bending my hand / wrist to a very uncomfortable position which causes extra mistakes. Do you have a way that I can overcome all that? Is there a style of variation to octaves or other distanced notes that I can do to still create the same sounds without it sounding too unlike the notes I'm trying to play? I'm an amateur and really would like to be able to develop my skills without the difficulty of my left hand not being able to make the stretch. I'm basically playing with 3 fingers and a thumb on that hand because of the physical discomfort. My ring finger often has to play the role of my pinky finger.

    omg I've been playing for YEARS and I didn't think of this... I would just avoid octaves because my hands are tiny 😭

    I really have small hands. Even playing on the edges I am one note short of an octave. Does anyone make finger extensions?

      No need for finger extensions; narrow keys suffice.

    What if they are too big? And you fingers just don't fit between the black keys?

    What if you can't split a big chord between the hands because your other hand is busy playing it's own chord?

    This only works when playing the white keys but if the chords have black keys mixed in, this is not possible
