    LOL @ build-mania Solstin gloating over battlements and peeking through arrow slit at the 4th wall.
    Creative chiseling is like using a drafting board. You're not duping or adding materials, just employing a clean template for creativity to shine through. 100% necessity for this monstrous build!
    Love the timelapse, music and mood of working through the night👌and the workshop looking great with its new plaster. A most satisfying episode!

    • @Solstin

      Always gotta add a bit of silliness when doing a long stretch of building :P
      And I completely agree, designing some of the chiselled details to import over via the portfolio just saves me from spending 2 in-game months on the designs! For smaller builds, or one-off designs, I'll still do the chiselling and designing on camera, but these big undertakings on the castle exterior are a special case!
      Glad you liked the episode! :D

      Thank you! I feel like it would lessen my own experience if I were to try to deceive everyone about how I'm going about doing things in this world. That, and the guilt would wreck me over time!
      The only time I find fibbing about things can be alright are for little gags and such like dropping the rotwalker mask into boiling water and suddenly having far less health in the next shot without mentioning that I risked my life to retrieve it, and when I kept calling the brown gambeson red.
      Plus, especially when it comes to massive builds like the castle, I think showing what steps can be taken to make life a little easier can serve as inspiration for others who might want to tackle a large build in VS but are overwhelmed with the amount of work it can turn into!

    Might be cool to have a secret passage out of the tower out to the river there. Build a basement under the first tower so defenders could sneak in or out if they are under siege. Could hide it in the supports and buttresses. The basement could then connect to the main part of the castle, in a dungeon or store room somewhere. Wouldn't need to be very big, block or two wide since it's meant to be unused except in an emergency.

      @MissStormcaller80 4 місяці тому +3

      @Solstin oh, that would fit right in. In stories, games and other media the secret passage the royal guards are escorting out of the castle is almost always connected to/or ends in the sewers.

    if youre going for a dwarven inspired build, then youre gonna need a LOT of booze! dwarves are known for their inclination for a fine brewed beverage. and if you want to go steam punk, youre gonna need boilers anyways. honestly, making booze is one of the first goals i have in VS. i take every berry bush i find in the wild and make a plantation with them. rows and rows and rows of berries for alcohol! plus the mash goes to feeding the animals. sure the mash sucks as a food source for them but at least i dont go through my grains cause i like baking even tho crock foods are best for longevity.

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому +4

      I'll definitely need both functional distillers and decorative boilers. It's just a matter of deciding if I want to make them out of copper like I know I should... that'll be a lot of copper...

    The CastleWallBrickFacing pieces reminded me of a documentary series I watched on the modern building project of Guédelon Castle in France. A team is building the castle, more or less with period technology, in real life using local materials. Anyway, the cut stones were used both at the base and, in that project and similar castles, in a couple layers further up the castle. This was to provide a level surface for the stacked irregular stones in between those layers.
    In so many words, I appreciate that it looks natural as well as visually pleasing.

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  Місяць тому +1

      I've seen that documentary, and it's a really interesting project! Guédelon was a bit of a subconscious influence on the design in retrospect, in the moment it just felt right to have larger brick blocks at the base!

    I'm fairly certain that the way you're digging that quarry - it'll never become unstable because you keep digging the exposed top layers downwards.
    In contrast to mineshafts which would be dug horizontally rather than vertically. Thus leaving layers of rock above them to become unstable.

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  2 місяці тому

      Not only that but since rock stability was an optional feature when I made the world (and set to off by default), I don't really have to worry about that! The access to get into the gatehouse towers will definitely be on the interior side once it's built up to that point. Ladder positions right now are mainly for construction access lol
      The tower machicolations that overhang the upper walkways are partially to keep the style consistent all the way around, but also to serve as a retreat point to be able to fire down at attackers who may have taken the top of the wall.

    I started playing again when 1.19 first dropped and found your channel. The wife and I loved your glacier and waterfall basin so much! I had to roll a very similar world, explored enough to ensure my homesite and then changed my settings and mods for the unexplored chunks.
    With 'Better Ruins' installed, there is a small primitive temple(?) and a huge underground / underwater library just NW of spawn. I actually branched off a separate world to creatively restore it! You could probably prune chunks to get it to spawn if you were so inclined...it does have a lot of monster spawners, and a lot of cool loot!
    I completely stole your kitchen for 2 of my worlds and 95% of your farmhouse on the glacier world! So far, I have built 3 "Boiler Room mk 3's" so far. However, I start off with basalt and add actual glass on the 2nd and 3rd builds! It's a ton easier than starting off with the glass.
    Anyways, wanted you to know that I start Jonesing after every amazing video for the next one. Your editing and production skills have massively improved over your, what, 5 year hiatus? I really feel like there is a full production crew working on this series, except they could probably kick out an episode a week.
    Please don't over extend yourself and get burned out, take breaks as you need! I can Jones out as much as you need, but keep being amazing, please...I need my fix!
    I am going to try and find it in my budget to have you as my very first Patreon. I am on a shoestring fixed budget, but I really want to support your work more than liking and sharing.
    Well, crap...looks like I have started a new novel...
    Stay cool! Stay inspired! But most of all, have fun! Because if it isn't fun, it isn't worth it! (please have fun, please have fun...)

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому +3

      Haha, steal away! I'm glad you like the kitchen, I'm really happy with how it turned out, I just need to eventually fill the shelves with crocks and let a moose grow out its antlers to hang them up as decoration above the ovens.
      The funny part about my editing improving over the last several years is that I didn't do any video editing in the interim, so all of the improvement has been from sheer enthusiasm! XD
      IIRC 5 years ago I was mostly streaming on Twitch, and that was with a few year gap from the last time I was seriously making UA-cam videos. Though back then my editing style was all about getting it put together quickly. I've been far happier taking my time to ensure that the quality is there without putting a time crunch on myself and risking burnout. :)
      Liking and sharing already helps a ton! I haven't actually looked at my Patreon (or updated it from whatever uninformed nonsense I set it up with), so I should probably either update it or remove the link lol
      But in any case, I know that feeling of being on a budget, so please never feel like you have to donate unless you really, really want to and it won't put any hardship on yourself or your wife!
      It looks like we're both budding comments section novelists, haha. I'm having a blast with the series and I hope you continue to enjoy as the world continues to come together!

You place the block in your first slot, select draw 1x1x1, and can click it in alot easier to add the material to chiseled blocks - I recommend experimenting with the true chisel before going all out with it, but the first slot on the hotbar is what it will use. • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому +1

      It only looks easy because of all the extra time I spend mentally planning out what to do and looking at pictures of old buildings and castles for inspiration! :P
      You can chisel dirt and grass blocks now, so even if you keep it as a dirt hut, you could always add some chiselled detail to it, maybe some roots poking through the soil, etc. Ain't nothin' wrong with a dirt hut, and it's still a great canvas if the inspiration to detail it up strikes!

    That baby goat you trapped might not be there the next time you check it due to either: 1) fence height needs to be 3 high minimum because goats are jumpers, or 2) lack of light in the pen causes it to despawn.

    Dang this looks amazing so far. Alot of work indeed but comming together really well.
    As a suggestion for the fortifications, you could try and utilize what is called a "Brattice" and decorate some walls and towers with a few of those even have bridges spanning one brattice to another kind of giving a more parasite architecture look. Temporary defences that were added to expand and strenghen the ones already there.
    You could also add "Taluses" to the bottoms of the wall where you see fit.
    Also putting a single door a bit further into the gatehouse to enter the towers isnt that far fetched.
    Also, also later english castles did encorporate the keep and the gatehouse together, so you could make the interior two flanking towers a bit more spacious with a fireplace or two, stone floors and even a window facing inwards to the bayley, give it a bit of a guard room look.
    The donjon of castle Couchy in France had beautiful vaulted stone floors, take a look at some sketches.
    Thanks for the great episode.

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому

      Thanks!
      I'll likely be using brattices for where the washrooms end up being (I'll have to add some kind of creek or other waterway below to help with waste disposal) but I'll definitely consider adding some for other battlements and such!
      Especially for the areas facing the water, I've been looking at a combination of taluses and buttresses so that's for sure in the plans! :)
      The parts of the castle that face toward potential attackers will be more defensive-focused, but having a bit more of a homey feel for inner-facing sides is 100% in the cards. It's much easier for guards on the inner curtain wall to shoot out big glass windows when enemy forces take the outer curtain wall. :P

    Wehey, new episode! Love this series! I want you to know it inspired me to get into Vintage Story, and though my base is significantly more humble than what you've been building, I've had a blast!

      Nice! Having fun is always the #1 priority. :)
      If your turnips are suffering from the heat, you could always plant them at a higher elevation! Even down South, it'll be much cooler the higher up you get, so that could be good for some of the more Northern crops!

    Man, watching you paste all those chiseled blocks in place really made me think about the ignored power of the Workbench Extended mod. I'm not sure if the time spent would be close to the same but I would think it would be a tad faster if you had a stack of this and a stack of that and simply put them in place like you would build normally. I know the Pantagraph is considered the "superior" version but the fact that the workbench allows you to build up a supply of commonly used blocks might just increase productivity when building.

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому +1

      I would definitely be more inclined to use the workbench extended mod to a greater extent if it could be mechanically powered and didn't eat through chisels as fast as it does. Even with the chisel-eating, though, if I could hook it up to a windmill and have it process blocks for me then I would for sure put it to better use than just decoration!

Vintage Story is fairly well optimized that the only things I've ever noticed causing performance issues have been memory leaks when loading lots of new chunks for the first time (which has been patched) but otherwise it's smooth and consistent!
      The chisels 'n' bits mod for the other block game is already working with a less-than-optimized base game, and loading it down even further lol

    • @Solstin
      @Solstin  4 місяці тому +1

      That cyan gear in the center of the UI represents your current temporal stability. Some areas (usually underground but sometimes on the surface) make it spin backwards as the color slowly drains. The lower it gets, the more you start hallucinating monsters (or drawing them to you from the rust world), and if it gets really low you start taking constant damage.
      Just being in an area thats stable slowly restores your temporal stability, so it's typically only a big issue if you end up spending a lot of time somewhere unstable!
