  • What should you know before tiling a shower wall? We share 10 important tips that work regardless of the tile being used.
    For more home improvement tips visit www.homerepairtutor.com/👍🏼
    Tip #1: Layout...do the tile layout on paper or use a piece of backer board and literally layout the tile
    Tip #2: Expansion and Contraction Joints...use expansion and contraction joints between the shower pan tile, corners, and ceiling...leave at least a 1/8" joint and use plastic horseshoe shims to maintain these joints while setting tile
    Tip #3: Tile Leveling Systems...these are not necessary for all types of tile, in fact we only use them for tiles with one edge longer than 15"...what tile leveling systems are the best? Consider using T-Lock, Peygran, Levtec, MLT, or Tuscan.
    Tip #4: Laser Levels...using laser levels will ensure tiles remain level and even as they're being set...Bosch and DeWALT both have affordable lasers in red or green and are a must in our opinion when setting shower wall tile.
    Tip #5: Trowel Size...getting the right trowel is ultra important for properly setting tile...for example, we used a 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel for the herringbone tile in this shower...and if you're not sure what trowel to use either ask us, watch Sal DiBlasi's video or call the thin-set manufacturer
    Tip #6: Thin-Set Mixing...good thin-set mortars have SPECIFIC instructions for mixing...Schluter's ALL-SET is one example that requires mixing for several minutes, 10 minutes of slaking and 3 minutes of additional mixing...using the right amount of water to thin-set ratio will provide the right thin-set consistency and performance...using a mixer specifically for mortar also helps, we like DeWALT's FlexVolt and Milwaukee's Mud Mixer
    Tip #7: Directional Troweling and Back Buttering...directional troweling aligns all the trowel ridges in the same direction and allows those ridges to collapse and expel air from between the tile, thin-set, and substrate...back buttering with the flat side of a trowel provides additional thin-set on the tile and even more bonding strength
    Tip #8: Clean Tiles...cleaning tiles while they're set helps cut down on prep the following day...using a dull carpet knife, paint brush, and good sponge (Ardex!) helps a lot
    Tip #9: Dustless Tools...Fein's Dust Shroud connected to a HEPA vac cuts down on dust while using an angle grinder...Montolit's Minipiuma is excellent at cutting tile in confined areas and can cut ceramic, porcelain, subway, and glass tiles
    Tip #10: Grout...using the right grout is super helpful and we like Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA...this grout is good for most tiles and down to 1/16" grout joints...it can set up in 20-30 minutes and allow entire showers to be grouted on the same day.

    About to tackle my first shower. So watching lots of your videos. They are all so well done. Much appreciated. My only tip is to get a lav mic.

    I like my CST Berger self levelling line laser. CST Berger was bought out by Bosch in 2008.

    I was really surprised at how well the color matching caulk matches the grout. Mapei makes good products. Great tips, you covered everything.

    why do you need to put silicone in the shower if youve sealed properly?

    I would like a video on how to do the edges of a tiled shower (what to use and how ) and a tiled edge of a tub frame.

      great suggestions! We could do a quick video showing that. Basically you could use bullnose, pencil trim, metal profiles, etc. What kind of tile are you going to use?

      @@HomeRepairTutor I'm going to use a 12x24 porcelain tile with a 1/2 in trowel.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому

      @@Maria-ys5sc in that case you could use any of the options mentioned above. If you opt for Schluter RONDEC, for example, try to see if the tile sits flush with the top of it or slightly below since you're using a 1/2 square notch trowel.

    A guy once told me to use grout as mortar, so you only have to buy grout for applying tiles. I have tiled a bit in house remod but always used thinset as mortar and grout as grout. Serious question. What is your take on only using grout?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому +1

      we only use thin-set mortar to set tiles and use grout for the joints because it's specifically made for that purpose and has color consistency, stain resistance and other properties that help it perform

    Instead of tiles, is there a way to install an apoxy wall in the shower? If so, that would be a cool video to watch.

      Maria Chavez Definitely an interesting idea. Perhaps could also make it to have a wild texture finish. What do you think?

    can u use an angle grinder to cut perfectly straight?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому +1

      it's possible but much easier on wet saws or manual tile cutters, we recommend tracing the cut with a pencil or sharpie

      thanks for replying. yeah, i was wondering without a fence you might need a stable hand. Wet saw probably makes the most sense.

    Is that wood trim on the edge of the shower?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому +1

      yes but it’s outside the shower and the door casing, so we’ll install the door just inside the bullnose 👍🏼
