Tiling a shower niche can be a challenge; especially the area around the niche. It requires a lot of precision. Check out this video for some tips on different options to finish off your shower niche and really make it stunning!

But the miter looks best harder to pull off but looks best. Just hit the edges with a diamond pad or sanding stone and ur good to go.
Sorry but I would never set a niche this way. Love and only use your products, but you have this one backwards. Always set the wall tile first because your wall may have a bow or be out of plumb. This will change the depth cut of the niche side cuts.
Pre-cut miter your profiles with the trapezoids on the wall side. Use tin snips to remove the small metal on the profile. It will bind in a saw. Use a Diablo Speed Demon blade on a miter saw to cut the 45°s. The cuts for a 12x12 niche will be 11 1/4" to the outside of the miter 90% of the time. Just depends on the thickness of the tile going in the sides of the niche. You can use a very small amount of hot glue or a small strip of tape to hold the mitered profiles together. Square them up perfectly on a flat surface, take them over to the wall and use painters tape on the top of the trapezoid of the top profile to hold it in place.
THEN set all your wall tile. Shower walls that are bowed or inside corners of walls can result in 1/2" of mortar behind the tile at the niche location sometimes. Set the profiles behind the wall tile making sure plenty of mortar is holding your pre-fab profiles in place.
THEN after the wall tile is set, install the tile in the back of the niche and take your measurement from that to the inside of the profile. If your wall was bowed or out of plumb this is where the adjustment to the niche is made. Your way could result in a 1/2" gap between the profiles and the niche side tiles. That's alota grout. Hope this helps someone.
Agree with mitre as best solution. The Kerdi system with the end block won’t allow a tile to be continuous.
It would be nice to have a longer video showing EACH application installed. It's hard to pick out what is best for you showing just one option

Further to the Millar comment, I tiled the nitche and put the frame on before starting on the wall with no problems.
It may have worked out for you that time but in my opinion you're really taking a gamble and I'm curious to know why you made that choice.
Wish they had samples like at 1:51 on their website or a video showing the different types installed with descriptions/ color, so one could compare and select the type that one likes.

I am installing tile today and doubt you will get back to me in time, but it's not clear if the tile inside the niche is flush with the outside edge of the wall or if it should have a gap the thickness of the grout line between the back edge of the Jolly strip and the inside edge of the tile in the niche
Dont downplay the miter, you can get a flawless miter edge by mitering along the factory edge. Actually, it even looks better than using trim.
Exactly, there's even guides to miter the tile perfectly, without the chipping. Miter is arguably aesthetically superior to trim, although more difficult to execute.

is it safe to assume you will finish off the bottom peice the same as the top?, without overlapping the bottom peice over the face tile you have created a flat horizontal seam exposed to massive water ,,whats to keep the water from entering shower between the metal and the bottom tile . ,,you will always have water sitting on that grout joint
Hi Bill. Yes, the bottom of the niche is fitted out with a profile the same method as shown at the top. The water will get in the grout joint, but the benefit of a sealed waterproof system is that the water will not damage the substrate behind the shower. This will allow the assembly to dry between uses.
The Greeks and the Romans have been doing tile for centuries without Schluter crap.
And much of it can still be found, intact, 2000yrs later !
Do they rust? I need something for the transition of the tile from my shower to my bathroom walls.

Aluminum does not rust, but it can corrode if the paint is scratched.
this isnt a tips and tricks video, this is an advertisement. you didn't show how you cut the rondec and you only applied one piece. I wanted to see how you lined up the corners, but you'd have to complete the niche to show that.

Heres what I got: Cement board on the walls. taped and floated and latex water proofing. Then tile with 2 miter jointed custom nitches. Latex water proofing on the sublfoor then rock board. more latex waterproofing on that, then a tile job I layed out using computer software to get a more perfect layout. I can go anywhere and look at "pro" work and laugh at it and point out how its inferior and where they went wrong. My install is bullet proof and right. Im not coming to do your tile because Im rich and dislike most people. So enjoy your "stress free pro" install.

It surprises me that more tile guys don't incorporate a few drywall knives into their program. Try using a 5 inch drywall knife to apply that mortar

I carry a 4" knife with me, mostly to help get mortar behind toilet flanges and under cabinet toe kicks and stuff.

My 6" taping knife worked great for mortaring the inside corners of my cement board when I redid the bathroom.

How do you install the shelf that comes with the niche? Is it screwed in or is the tiles of the bottom shelf holding it up?
HI there ! When using the prefabricated shelf, determine the desired height of the shelf and mark with a level line. Set tile up to that line on the back and sides of the niche. Butter the sides and back of the shelf with Schluter-SET, Schluter-ALL-SET, Schluter-FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar and solidly embed it in the niche, resting on the previously installed tile. The shelf may be raised at the back to create a slope, or the tile may be set on a slope, to prevent water from pooling in the finished application. Wish I would of seen this video before I did my niche with rondel. I inserted the trim behind the inside tile vice the wall surface.
I'm sold! What a great idea for edging shower niches. But the only issue not discussed is how to buy Quadec. It's probably my fault but I went to a few different online vendors and it showed prices of around $8. For what you ask? It says that for $8 I get one inch. One inch of what? It couldn't be $8/inch because that would put the overall cost of a 16"x12" niche at about $450. So that couldn't be right. So what do I get for my $8? If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong here, let me know. I did order the one inch as advertised on Lowes so I'll have the answer in a couple of days which I'll share if I don't hear back from anyone...and believe me when I say that ALL the online vendors show exactly the same setup, $8 or so for one inch of something...

What exactly are the names of the schluter products used in this video?
Hi hkgeldean! We used a bunch of different products throughout this video. Here's the list: The solid backing is our KERDI-BOARD, and we installed a KERDI-SHOWER-SN Shower niche with our KERDI-BAND waterproofing the seam between the niche and the KERDI-BOARD on the wall. The KERDI-BOARD shelf in the niche comes in larger sizes. The glass shelf in the niche is made from a purchased piece of cut glass and is installed using our DECO-SG profiles. The profiles we show you that finish around the niche are: we used RONDEC for the demonstration that Aaron holds in his hand. It's the round finishing profile. We used QUADEC on the main demonstration where they actually installed part of the profile. Both RONDEC and QUADEC have corners pieces available. Towards the end of the video, Andy shows some Sample pieces of other profiles and DIADEC is shown in his hand there. I hope this helps to decipher the products used within the video. what's the diffference between Jolly and Finec? Can you use both for niche?

Informative stuff. I’ve never seen any videos that grout after applying the trim. How do you seal to prevent any water penetration into the back of the tile?
Hi Ralph, you can treat the trim like an extension of the tile. The entire tile installation would be completed prior to grouting. Any moisture that gets into the grout joints or into the thin-set under the edges of the tile will just evaporate after a little while. Hope this helps!
wait, i thought the legs went under the niche wall’s tile, not the shower wall’s tile, so i guess it can work both ways? is it purely installer preference? or are there advantages to one way over the other? And if so, what are those pros and cons?
Hi Chris! Yes, the profile anchoring legs may be placed inside or outside of the niche, based on the desired look and preference. Installing the anchoring legs on the inside of the niche allows for more adjustment with the profiles and wall tile to ensure everything is aligned properly. Installation of anchoring legs on the outside will allow you to hide things like cut tile edges or install the wall tile and profile and come back to tile the niche at a later time or not have to miter a profile such as Schluter®-JOLLY. The choice may also depend on which profile is selected and the desired look.

Yes, that's right.
You would usually tile right away. But you can wait, it you prefer, as long as your thin-set over the anchoring leg is smoothed out, so you don't have any bumps getting in the way of the tile install later on.

Do you start the wall tile around the niche or do you start at the bottom as if doing a wall with no niche?
Hi there, it depends. You have options based on your installation needs. There isn't necessarily a one size fits all approach. You could start from the floor, if it's flat. You can start from the niche or the floor, if you will have cut tiles between them. You could also start from the floor prior to cutting out for the niche to make sure you can use a whole tile up to the niche profile. Evaluate your installation parameters and choose the best option for your assembly based on that. Hope that helps.
How do you seal the joint between the trim and the inside niche tile, grout? Thx
Hey there! Correct. The niche itself is waterproof and then the KERDI overlaps the flange by 2", so the junction is waterproof there as well. All you would then use between the profile and the tiles is grout. No need to "seal" anything in that surface junction, as it is already "sealed" below.

Bevel, it's a 45° BEVEL. Also, why not MITER the corners of the profile strips? That would look better than the silly inside corners...

What should I tell the Client about cleaning their shower that has Rondec profiles installed. They are using Polished Chrome in the Master Bath and Brushed Nickel in the other 2 baths. Also any tips on grouting without scratching the profiles? I was going yo tape it all off.
Hi Johnette, Rondec can be cleaned using neutral cleaning agents and tools, nothing abrasive. Your client should avoid the use of strong acids (e.g. hydrochloric or hydrofluoric) and base/alkaline cleaners (e.g. bleach, ammonia, chlorides). It shouldn't be necessary to tape the profile off when grouting. We recommend working with materials and tools that will not scratch or damage sensitive surfaces. It is also very important to remove thin-set or grout from the surface immediately, especially for aluminum profiles.

Its nice to add these corners instead of miters, but 2 - 12"x20" niches with stock shelves would require 16 pcs at over 12 dollars each is over $200.00, not good!
Hi Tom, in this case with the 16 corners, it can get a bit pricier, especially if using our solid aluminum corners. One cost-saving option could be mitering the corners instead.

I set my schluter edging profile on the inside of the niche with miter cuts as I'm setting rile. Then, fab the niche with wood and then coated in waterproofing. not sure why you'd make it harder and doesn't look good setting it on the face, imo

It's hard to see but, is the Keridi board flush or recessed with the edge of the inside niche wall? What forms the seal on that edge? Is it just grout between the inside niche tile and the Rondec that is the seal??
Hi there accidentalvoyeur! The Kerdi-Board meets the "flange" of the niche and is flush. Then the waterproofing seal is created by using Kerdi-Band over the abutting edges.
Now when the tile goes on the wall it has to much material behind it to be flush with the trim
Just make sure to select the proper size profile according to the tile thickness and format-- you should be good!
So, If I'm installing 1/2" ceramic tile, I have to get 1/2" trim? Does the trim account for the thinset? Won't the tile be higher then the trim with thinset? Please help and explain. Thanks
@@rjvillanueva64 yes, you are correct, get another trim size that is the next higher size to accommodate your mortar. The people at the tile store I should help you with this question
@@rjvillanueva64 You have the right idea. Keep in mind that a tile labeled as a half inch nominal size isn't exactly a half inch, remember that the anchor leg has a certain thickness, remember that the schluter profiles can be installed with the anchor leg in either orientation, etc.
If installing glass mosaic inside the niche, do I still use unmodified thinset even though glass is usually in modified thinset?

You need to redo this video with a more detailed demo. This is just a series of hints that leave people trying to figure it all out while getting themselves into trouble with disappointing and unfixable results. Newbie question here. Nobody seems to address the actual positioning of the tiles in relation to the wall faces and edges. Is the front edge of that inside tile flush with the face of the wall (the wall he put the thinset on), or is it set back from that wall face to allow a grout joint?
Hi John, since most of our aluminum and PVC wall profiles have an integrated grout spacer, you can cut the tile flush with the wall or leave it set back a little, depending on your grout joint size preference. Although the QUADEC does come with an integrated grout spacer on both sides, we decided to set the tile back just a little (maybe 1/16" or so) in this case to provide a slightly larger joint. The stainless steel profiles do not have an integrated grout joint, so you would always keep the tile back a little from the edge with those to allow for that grout space. Well it was neat how you did that but you didn't explain was a tile already in the niche because I see I didn't see you put a band of Charity around it to waterproof the niche did you already have tile inside the niche you never said can we explain things better

You guys are doing it backwards The profile installation goes inside the niche. You have to build the walls first And then the niche. The main reason about doing the walls first is because you have to plumb all your walls first. Unless if you don’t care
So the anchoring legs go under the tile on the inside of the niche rather than downward against the shower wall, right?
So as you lay or install the tile on say the flat part of the niche, go ahead and place the Quadec or Rondec piece under the tile, right?
Lol at this guy telling the manufacturers how to install their own equipment. If you watched the other videos you would know that it can be installed either way, and that this particular demonstration is an intentional oversimplification.
I get they are trying to sell a product, but why not just set tile on the inside walls of the niche to be flush with the surface first, then set the outer wall tile so overlaps the edge? I think that doing this would be much cleaner and easier and doesn't require overpriced unnecessary edging. Also, who the hell did your miters, they should be fired.

When u put the tile on first did u leave it short of the outside to accommodate a grout line between the outside profile
Good question! Yes, we actually did leave a little space at the edge of the tile, even though the QUADEC in aluminum has an integrated joint spacer already, so we would have been okay without any extra here. We suggest a 1/16”-1/18” grout joint between the tile and the profile, so in this case it was closer to 1/8”. Remember that you for sure need to plan in your grout space for stainless steel because it does not have the integrated grout spacer. Hope this helps!

The QUADEC in aluminum and PVC has the grout spacer on both sides, but the stainless doesn't on either. So you'll need to keep the tile back for stainless steel installations or if you would like the heaver grout joint with the PVC or aluminum, you can do the same. The trim they installed in this video is what I am looking for along with the match edge piece and corners but Rona, Lowes and Home Depot in Canada do not carry these 3. The edging I can get but not the matching pieces.

Yes, we installed the tile inside of the niche first. This makes it easier to install the edge of the profile flush to the edge of the inside tile without having to build-up the thin-set under the inside tile.

Is it acceptable to set the profile as you have here and then come back and set the tile later after the thin set has hardened? I have a floor to ceiling profile to install and I am concerned about the open time of the thin set if I attempt to install the profile and the tile concurrently.
Hi Lucas, it is recommended to set the profile and adjacent tile at the same time to allow for the best all around installation of the tile and profile. When they are installed together this give the best opportunity to make any adjustments to the profile. If the profile is set prior to tile, care would need to be taken to ensure the profile is properly embedded and plumb so the tile installation is not impacted negatively. Hope this helps!
@@schlutersystems1 Thank you for your reply. In my application, I am setting an 8ft profile to finish the edge of a shower surround. The field is 3x6 marble tile. With only a 20 minute open time for All-Set, it just doesn't seem possible to tile the whole surround from floor to ceiling in that period of time. I think I'll have no choice but to set the profile first, taking care that it is plumb and avoiding excess mortar buildup.

Lucas Middleton try setting the tile up the wall and installing the trim second, I’ve done that several times because of the same problem you’re expressing. When you get ready to install the trim, just use a grout bag or some other old bag with the corner cut off to use as a semi caulk gun to fill the edges of the tile before you slide the trim in. Have some shims around and make sure to clean off the outer inch of tile before the install to make sure your trim will set flush against your wall tile..ps. Use the thinset you’re using in the bag for the install of the trim

You forgot to mention how much of the sluret metal you need to leave for the piece of tile that goes inside the sides of the nitch which is a very important point, because if you install the sluret metal flush with the edge of the cement board, it's going to look terrible,.so you need to leave it over the edge of cement board at least the width of tile you're installing “plus" 1/8 of an inch for thinset in order to make it flush with the slureth metal.

They way they did it and also the way I do it, is to install the tile inside the niche first flush with the wall. Then you set your trim on the outside around the niche. Now Just line it up flush with the tile inside the niche
they used kerdi board not cement board, not that that changes how to use profiles. I don't use hardie or durroc anymore, I love the kerdiboard

What did you use to cut that miter? A chainsaw? I thought these guys had more skill than that. Anytime you cut a miter cut the tile square first then cut the miter leaving about a 16th of an inch of the original square cut remaining. This way you get a perfect miter cut every time. It' so easy to do.

Yeah, because the majority of tile installers in the real world suck and do half ass jobs, if they even show up. This of course doesn't apply to you UA-cam commenting installers because you are all the best in the world. At any rate, I Would rather have a clean metal trim than some hack job trying to butt tiles together. I work in the industry, so quite familiar with the "tile professionals".
@@aijem423 Amen to that. You hit the nail on the head. We had our previous shower done it Schluter trim and are now completing our new walk in shower in our second home with Schluter trim. Makes it look very nice instead of the craptastic job that most UA-cam professionals do.

Well I got to the job ready to build my niche. Problem is Arizona tile doesn't know what they're selling or what works with your product.
The corners they gave me didn't work I had to miter all of it. 8 miters and every cut the saw tried to rip it out of my hand. Don't tell me to use more teeth. These are meant for wood. But what do I do? Lose another half day trying to explain what Arizona should already know?? Then of course I have to wait a week or get stuck with 60 bucks worth of freight.
None of these miracle solutions are worth it. I could have bullnosed everything and been done. There is no way I won't have to back cut my tile tomorrow because unless you're walls are finish carpentry flat this stuff is not going to lay correct. Sticking two pieces to a wall in the middle of nothing with nothing against it means nothing. It's just a pitch.

just so you know rondec sucks. please trust me. ive tiled 30 showers and have used the system and you cant cut or fit the metal properly
If you've done 30 showers then you can afford a chop saw with a nonferrous metal blade. Use the schlueter corners. If you can measure accurately...no problem.
I've done hundreds, as have many of us, and if you can't figure out how to cut and fit the pieces then tiling is not for you.
someone has to come up with a prefab niche in a few different sizes..this niche business stinks big time....a big waste of time and money.. and I think pretty much a bad idea in general

I prefer installing corner shelves made out of the customers granite or quartz instead of the niches. So much faster and looks better as well. These niches don't hold a lot once tiled and complete. Sure they look nice but not worth what they cost and the time they take to install and time lost waiting for it all to dry so you can lay up around it.
