- An anonymous Christian caller phones into The Line hoping to make a case for the resurrection of Jesus using the gospels. He argues that Jesus' followers thought they saw him risen from the dead after his crucifixion, and since group hallucinations are supposedly impossible, it must have really occurred.
Host Matt Dillahunty points out the gospels providing this claim are anonymously written and unverified, questioning their reliability as evidence. Even if they were eyewitness accounts, Matt argues that four people claiming a resurrection does not conclusively prove it happened.
When pressed for evidence, the caller cites the martyrdom of early Christians as lending credibility to their supernatural claims. But Matt rebuts that martyrdom only demonstrates the strength of a belief, not the truth of that belief.
Unable to provide substantiated eyewitness testimony or empirical evidence for Jesus' resurrection, the caller contradicts himself on whether the gospels actually have direct eyewitness testimony. After accusing Matt of special pleading fallacy in assessing the evidence, the increasingly confused caller admits under pressure that he cannot demonstrate this fallacy and retracts the accusation.
Overall, the anonymous Christian caller struggles unsuccessfully to prove the resurrection of Jesus happened, relying on contradictory claims and weak arguments that crumble under scrutiny from Matt.

The typical Christian inability to admit one is wrong even on points where it doesn't matter such as he didn't know what Special Pleading meant. He could have just asked, but instead doubled down when called on it. Matt and Jimmy would have been happy to explain what it means, and there would have been not much hard feelings when he retracts his claim.

There is some rule or excuse in religions that says these gods and sons of gods don't appear to us because then we wouldn't need faith to believe, and they want us to believe based on faith not evidence or that would ruin the cat and mouse game of hide and seek that gods love so much.

I agree, I've always kind of wondered why on earth the Son of GOD wouldn't have made being resurrected and being back from the DEAD much more of a publicity coup than he apparently did!! I thought this as a six year old (!) and certainly think it now! It's an absurd story, clearly made up by mere mortals!

I always find it strange when someone believes a human body can remain dead for days and suddenly recover, despite the damage on cellular level, including in the brain. But draw a line on group hallucination. Especially if they believe in the supernatural.
Good point. Saying "group hallucination is physically impossible" as a premise in an argument that concludes with "therefore the bodily resurrection of Jesus must be a historical reality" is a real head scratcher.

I can't read minds because reading minds is impossible therefore I must have the power of unaided flight which is also impossible. See how that doesn't work. Granted the gospels fill in a more detailed narrative structure around their impossibilities... but its still ridiculous to argue in this way.

@@_Somsnosa_ I was lucky, when I was a questioning teenager I was asking my pastor questions in Sunday school, and he introduced me to the idea, which he subscribed to, that heaven is being one with god, and hell is being eternally separated. After realizing that even the clergy didn't agree on what eternity looked like, and having had the fear of burning in literal fire removed, it was much easier to continue to deconstruct from there. It's much harder to question when you are forced to fear. Before that point I was essentially doing Pascal's wager without knowing what it was called.

A few months ago I got into a bit of a debate with my dad, who is a believing Christian. But I was telling him about how historians don't actually know who wrote the Bible, that the names in the Bible, like Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, were just anonymous names. And my dad just looked at me like I was crazy. He told me I was being ridiculous, and what I was saying was completely false. I just looked at him and shook my head. I told him to look it up sometime. I doubt he ever did. It may be better to embrace the hard truth, than a reassuring fable, as Carl Sagan suggest. Unfortunately, it's not what the majority of people on this planet do.
Your dad doesn't want to look into the historical truth, he just wants to be right. I experienced the same thing. He'd have to lay awake at night staring at the ceiling if he doubted himself and accepted your statement.
@@Spiritof_76 Yeah, i agree with you on that. The funny thing is, when it comes to my dad, I don't really want to change his beliefs. My dad is getting up there in years, he's had multiple heart attacks and his health is less than ideal. He's likely not going to be around for much longer. I know his faith brings him a level of comfort. And I realize this is totally due to selfish reasons on my part, being that he's my dad, but I don't really want to take that from him. It's really weird, because it goes against what I believe is right for any other scenario. I think dealing in reality is the best way. So, there's this strange conflict I have when it comes to my dad and what he believes. Now if the topic of religion does come up, I don't typically pull any punches. I will tell him what I believe. So its because of that, that I don't usually bring up religion in our conversations.
@@jeremybr2020 I don't bring it up with family or friends unless they start delving into MAGA territory or claim they are going to heaven and everyone else is going to burn in hell, including those not in their denomination, then I push back. But I've had many people nearing death who thought they were going to see their relatives in heaven, so no reason to argue that. Best of luck.
My grandmother is a religious nut, she actually thinks she's a prophet and god is dictating for her to write a book. She thinks matt, mark, luke, john wrote the books.. one of her two main Bibles is a Niv like Matts. I refuse to engage with her at all, because it's just seat of the pants, make it up as she goes along preaching. The only funny part about it, is the irony in which she'll attack other religions.

We have to take them seriously because they're wanting to enact laws based on their religion.

I don't know how studied this phenomenon is, but it's interesting. You wouldn't use this kind of thinking in ANY other area, but religious belief seems to be a whole different animal than all other ways of thinking. It's like using the owner's manual for a WWII Sherman tank to work on your 2022 Toyota. You might find some similar techniques, but it's unlikely to work.

It is a process. I've had a little success by asking believers, "is there even one thing that your faith teaches that you're skeptical about"? Some won't admit it, but most can think of one. Then we discuss that, and they find themselves in a place that's open to questioning, that they themselves came up with. This way they don't feel attacked, just a little doubtful. Then it's up to them to pursue that on their own, or choose to remain willfully faithful and just ignore their doubt.

I've several times got JW's to agree with me, that love is the most beautiful and wonderful thing in this word, and that it can never be wrong, and then I've showed them a picture of a female friend of mine, and then presented her as my girlfriend.
They become very silent afterwards, and in their faces I can see that something small has moved. Because I've just presented something, that they have forgotten to think about in all their focus on guilt.

I think the other problem is that many believers do not know the bible very well as this gentleman just demonstrated. The good thing about these debates though is that at least some of them are then forced to study the bible for themselves and come to the logical conclusion that it is obviously a work of fiction.

Exactly! I have a friend who is trying to get me to convert from being an atheist to being a Christian, and when I told her that there is no evidence of Jesus being resurrected, she shouts at me "but there were 500 witnesses!"
I'm left thinking "Uh, no, there were NOT 500 witnesses. There was just one person saying that there were 500 witnesses."
If I talk to her again about this with her saying once again that there were 500 witnesses, I'm going to say this to her:
"Jim Bob in Arkansas wrote a book saying that he was abducted by aliens in a flying saucer. He said that over a hundred people saw it happen. Do you believe him? By your "logic", there were over a hundred witnesses, so how can you not believe it?"
It's downright comical that when I talk to this person, she will state things from the bible as if they are cold hard facts. Talk about being brain washed!

As for eyewitnesses, there were no confirmed eyewitnesses to the resurrection as all we have is a writing from an anonymous person saying there were witnesses.
Also, nothing was written about the resurrection until many years after it supposedly occurred.
Just because the Bible has identified historical places, that does not make the Bible historical.

I've to say, even though he went in as anonymous, I liked his tone of voice, he seemed to listen and he generelly presented himself nice. Still it's wild to see how hard it is for believers to just meet a burden of proof there, they look and care for in every other aspect of their live.
The issue at hand is sin and God’s nature of being just. Sin brings suffering (the pleasure is short term, and the suffering is long term-on earth and in hell forever). God brings Righteousness (may have short term suffering followed by long term pleasure- on earth and in Heaven).
If you love yourself repent of your sins (lying, hatred, unforgiveness, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, stealing, dishonouring your parents etc) & believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sins. (Jesus died on the Cross as a sacrifice and defeated death by rising from the dead)

Compared to the myths about the Nordic, Greek, Roman etc Gods, the Bible is not half as entertaining.

The early Christians weren't martyred simply because they believed in Christianity. It was perfectly okay to worship any god, cult, or religion you wanted to in the Roman Empire. They were persecuted because they were a royal pain in the ass threatening to send their god to destroy the Empire while refusing to pay their taxes and contribute to Roman society. That and Nero blamed them for burning Rome down that one time.
