I enjoyed hearing your review of The Saint of Bright Doors, and especially appreciated the excerpt you read. I think that's one I'll pass on. Sush got me The Wood at Midwinter, so we'll probably read that this week. Hope you have a great New Year's!
I could see you liking the ideas and theme, but the kind of urban fantasy aspects definitely seem not to your taste. Though it fits well with the vibe of Leguin prize, it is really surprising it got on so many other major prize lists too. I thought it was very good, but I don't see a popular audience for it and it seems so absurd/inaccessible that I can only guess authors voting more than readers maybe in those prizes.
SCANDAL! I am shocked. Re-reading seems like a good idea, I need to do that as well. You seriously need to get to the adaptation though, it's brilliant.
I need to pick up that Armfield short story collection! I did just get Private Rites and am debating whether to read it in conjunction with King Lear (whenever that play gets pulled from my tin) or right now...
I think the collection is definitely in line with Our Wives in terms of feel and not always having a solid answer/conclusion, so if you liked that definitely pick up. I hadn't realized Private Rites has a Lear connection! That is interesting, I say definitely pair it, it's always so much more enriching to go that way even if it slightly slows things down from wanting to race at something shiny.
Yeah, I was underwhelmed with Wood at Midwinter but it's design is stunning. I added that queer Christmas romance immediately. Who am I?Disability rep too! Yes!! I love Sarah Waters. I hope you love it! I watched Hogfather on Christmas Eve for the first time. What a strange and fun film 😂. Hard agree about AI. I'm opted out too.
Midwinter definitely felt like it was missing a 2nd half, but it did really inspire me to want to go back to her work that I have loved for re-reads this year. So, I guess success? Spoiler... I loved Little Stranger! It feels like this was probably an outlier of her work a bit, but was exactly the vibe I was wanting. Found it surprising there wasn't really a twist? (The twist is there is no twist 😂) But I loved it regardless. Definitely more Sarah Waters for me in 2025. So glad you got to experience Hogfather for the first time, such a delightful oddity.
@@ReadBecca I'm so glad you loved it! I do think there is a twist, at the very end, but it's quite subtle. Who is the little stranger? Who is the catalyst for all of the events in the book? (I'm not going to spoil it for others but hopefully you'll understand what I mean.) It's definitely one I'm excited to reread because there are many layers to unpack.

I reread Hogfather this year, but I haven’t seen the adaptation. I must rectify that! Wishing you a happy Hogswatch!
