I have been working on developing for quest 2 and its very cool to be able to just play even the default vr template on standalone. Makes me feel giddy
Do you need to charge each controller and the headset? it looks like there is only one charger... I hope you make some VR games and show us some tutorials. thanks
Me!!! I always love seeing updates on VR for Unreal Engine 4 It's going to be the future of development and motion capture animations! Also I love Smart Poly's videos so I know it's going to be good!
@ Smart Poly - if I understood correctly, your $79 cable is Type-C on both ends and you have to use an adapter to plug it into the PC because yours doesn't have any Type-C ports? Is it just a regular USB A to C adapter? (USB 2 or 3?) Also, can you check if the charging cable will work as a Link through that adapter (that cable should allow connecting to Link since some update)?
Update: Wasn't able to connect with the charging cable + adapter (also somehow I thought it would be 10ft/3m, not 3ft/1m), now I have a 16ft/5m USB3 (A->C) for $25 and everything works fine (2.5Gbps in the oculus USB Test).
I have a vr headset and the answer to that is a bit of both. You still know where you are and that there is a screen on your face. However the brain is a funny thing. The sights and sounds do confuse you. After a couple of minutes in a game, you think what is happening is happening to you. Say something flies next you your ear, you'll react like there is something right there. You see a table, you'll want to put your hand there. Things like that. It's kinda trippy but apparently after a while it goes away because your brain adjusts to the differences.
@@piper67890able which is the sad thing first time u go into vr u feel like your in another world but after a few weeks u adjust and be like ok I can't actually jump upward to get there dont break the table again
@Smart Poly I have a Rift S. Do I need a Facebook account to use the Oculus SDK with UE4? I have an oculus account but haven’t tried to set it up with oculus dev yet. I guess I should assume they will phase out the oculus brand altogether one day. I don’t have a problem creating a new real name Facebook account (professional) for game dev but I do have an issue using the current live Facebook account with family data going to big business. A part of me believes the Rift S and the Quest 2 are independent systems since one requires a PC which is more open vs a stand-alone, but who knows what crazy BS Facebook will pull down the road. Sorry for the long post.
@@AnthonyMiele Update, I actually bought it after the recent update...and it works amazingly *Thank God* and for the Wifi, it were just 4 steps one time....after that?! Onward wireless :D :D Guys...I hereby admit I was wrong, it is worth every penny.
What about launching packaged UE4 VR games? I can get it to launch in the editor, but when I package and start the packaged build, the game does not detect the headset and launches the game "normally" as a non-VR title.
hey bro i need your advice i about to build a new PC for unreal engine and i'm confused between CPU and GPU .....should i focus on CPU performance or GPU performance and how much GPU VRAM should i consider ??
Do you want to play UE4 games or work with the Editor? If it's the latter, CPU is more important than GPU. GPU only affects your frame rate (though in the near future it will also be able to do static light baking), while CPU will speed up your overall workflow - shader compilation, lightmass, responsivness in complex event graphs, it's all tied to your CPU - the more cores, the better. Also, a GPU is easier to upgrade at any point - I usually have a PC for 6-8 years with the same Motherboard+CPU and go through 2-3 GPUs before the workstation is passed on to someone (where it might continue for another 4 years and 1-2 GPUs). But in any case, don't worry too much about it, you don't need high-end hardware to work decently with UE4, a Ryzen 3600 and a GTX 1660 will get you a long way, for example (even lower hardware will do).
You don't need oculus link from may. Because oculus finally allowed to use charging cable as link. One thing that it is too short, but as Poly said you can buy much more cheaper cable on amazon.
The charging cable is Type-C to Type-C, right? Do you happen to know if it will work with an adapter and then plugged into a normal USB-3 port on the PC?
Nice to see a getting started tutorial on it. Since all the oculus apps are expensive, you could probably break into that market with a series of fun mini games. One of which is free to hook users in.

Thank you so much for a straight-to-the-point down-to-earth review of this. It's exactly what I've been looking for! Take care :)
also one more pro, quest 2 could be carried a lot more easily than other vr headset, so playtesting on the go becomes easier.

The controllers run on AA batteries, and I've heard they last a long time. Also, I'm pretty sure batteries come with them.
If they die you can always use the built-in hand tracking on the headset.
@@VergilBratwurst918 except hand tracking is not used in most games, it's up to the developers to use that function in their applications

I believe it is required, especially when you want to upload finished games to the oculus platform
