  • The St. Francis Trail works its way through floodplain forest habitats along the St. Francis Dead River to the ghost town of St. Francis at the south edge of the Alexander Springs Wilderness Area. The St. Francis Trail is a great place to hike in Ocala National Forest in Lake County, Florida with beautiful scenery and interesting history to learn about. The town of St. Francis used to exist here during the 1800’s and had a steamship landing. Many of the trails were once part of old town roads, a wagon road and railroad line as well. “St. Francis, which earlier was called Old Town, was a river town that served the steam boat traffic on the St. Johns River in 1888. They had a post office from March 15, 1888 to Oct. 15 1909. When the train line came out of Jacksonville in 1886 it began taking the business from the steamboats.”

I appreciate that you do not disclose the locations of special spots, and always enjoy when you do post locations of more popular, yet not well known places to everyone!

Visited Ocala national forest for the first time last week, hiked Salt Spring through Hopkins preserve on the Florida trail. Beat up my feet but the experience and scenic views are completely mesmerizing. Tbh you inspired my interest to even learn about Ocala, I can’t wait to go back

Rattlesnakes mainly over moccasins just depends on the habitats. Mostly I come across racer and rat snakes

Are you ever afraid of running into a bear or group of feral hogs?
