I see Emperor.
I click.
Happy.
ivan r I clicked fast AF once I had a chance to
same here ^^ just wished it was Elegy of Icaros
Agreed.
I'm a simple guy, i see emperor, i like!
These guys is from my small hometown (Notodden) in Norway. I’m really proud that these guys made it that big back in the day. They’re still at it, and is still one of the most important and influential bands in the black metal in my opinion. The drummer (Kai AKA Trym Torson) is a good friend of mine, and a real dope tattoo artist. I trusted him to ink me up real good. Got two massive sleeves from the guy.
-Anyways, it was cool to watch this reaction video, and see that it’s being appropriated..
BTW, you should really do “Phoenix” by Satyricon.
Hey, I'm a french ultra fan of Emperor (you can check all my Emperor/Ihsahn covers on my channel), and I went to Notodden almost 10 years ago to get inked by Trym, he tattoed me the Emperor E Icon logo on my forearm....Such a nice guy, and one of my idols !
Emperor is life.
@kimmorten Emperor toured here in Sydney. Trym was truely amazing live. Definitely one of the best live shows I've been too. I'm 72 seen the Beatles '64 and Led Zeppelin '72 to get a perspective. 😆🤩
When I was in college, in ceramics class, we took turns with the music during lab hours, and when my day came I decided to play some Emperor. Everybody but like 2 people thought I was a lunatic. Man, I love Emperor.
the album this is off of, Anthems To Welkin At Dusk, is a sort of concept album.
This song is party of the greater overall concept of Anthems, (tracks 1 to 3) the followers ascendence to and unification with his master; The Emperor, possibly the very same who narrates I Am the Balck Wizards.
(tracks 4 to 6) He, undergoes a series of trials to determine if he is worthy, They almost destroy him stripping him of his humanity piece by piece, he succeeds in all of these trails however.
During track 8 he questions his original motive in enduring all of this, and realises that in simply taking up his master gauntlet his courage has already surppased him and it is the humanity he tried to deny which has given him this courage.
Finally he returns, no more enlightened but knowing enough to known that he knows very little, as well as having the strenght to not need a higher power than himself to believe in.
and this is why I'm single ha
p.s you'd REALLY dig the live performance of Inno A Satana from this same concert. The last song of their last show of their last tour.
Whoa! Great breakdown !
They have had selected gigs after that kinda in a small tour format. Last time last year and this year celebrating 20th anniversary of Anthems to Welking at Dusk. I for example saw them play the whole album in Helsinki, Finland one month ago. It was a great gig!
James, what an awesome break down brother. Anthems is one of my favorite albums...
My favorite track on the whole album, along with The Wanderer.
"I return to the soaring cliffs.
They truly shine of strength.
Even though, I nothing learned.
With strength I burn..."
“Suddenly, his mournful cries we’re stunned...”
Every time I hear it, I get chills and teary-eyed.
Ihsahn: classiest black metal author in my opinion. Thinking that he was in his late teens/ early 20s when he wrote all the Emperor stuff is amazing and for such a young guy being able to write lyrics like those in a foreing language is mind blowing.
Black Metal lyrics are all terrible to be honest
@@davidrobinson2005 did you watch this video? It's literal poetry
He's an absolute genius
@@davidrobinson2005 yeah like mgla, dso, watain.. their lyrics are so shite
I am a Black guy, who is a musician (no genres are off limits) and a christian! Emperor is one of my favorite bands of all time! Ihsahn is such an inspiration to the music that I create! Now I gotta find a saxophone player LOL
Ah, so you’re going for a Pasi-era Amorphis sound...🤔
I'm christian, and Emperor is one of my faves. Tbh, I don't care too much about the lyrics, but I love the music (since I was like 10ys old)
My favorite Emperor song ever, requested this weeks ago and I'm glad you guys are reacting to it!
Fabian Flores definitely agree
Yep I’ve been asking for this weeks on end! Finally they did it!!!
António Gonzalez this is probably my favorite BM song of all time. Legit.
NOW if only I can get my Floor Jansen (idc if its After Forever, ReVamp or *Nightwish*) fix too! 😂😂😊 I'm patient though LOL
Glad they got to this one though!
I was gutted when Emperor split, thought I would never see them, then they decided to do a few reunion shows every now and then Got to see them finally in 2014 in England, I waited 17 hours at the front of the barriers till they arrived. I stood there mouth open all the way through their set, it was like I was transfered to another place. I have seen so many bands live, but Emperor really blew me away, the BEST band i have ever seen live. Life complete, can die a happy man.
2014? With Faust?
This is one of their best songs, but it's very complex with a lot going on. Trying to fully pick up what is going on with the music in this live version would be challenging if you've never heard the studio version.
The dual between order and chaos makes tons of sense given Emperor/Ihsahn's past and what was happening in his personal life around the time that this album came out. Emperor had members involved in the string of church burnings in Norway and their first drummer was convicted of a murder in 1994. Here's a group of young kids, essentially, in their teens and early 20s, living a life that could only be described as extremely chaotic. Ihsahn was a LaVey style satanist and was active enough within that scene to be known by LaVey himself (I believe, I'm pulling this from memory of a book I read 10+ years ago)
By 1997 when this album was released, Samoth had obviously been released from jail for his part in the arson, Bard Eithun was serving a prison sentence for the murder he had commited, and Ihsahn was now married. Order had become a part of the daily lives of this group that had lived the life of chaos for so long. I'm sure that created an internal struggle, especially for someone as introspective as Ihsahn and I think this song describes that struggle in an amazing way.
The beauty of Emperor is that Ihsahn could tell a story not just through lyrics but with the music itself. Their albums are best listened to as a whole because they are so deliberately arranged to create a journey and not just a single.
One of their best songs but I still think “Into the Infinity of Thoughts” is their greatest song.
Yes!
emperor writes the most dynamic and complex songs which sound very chaotic on top but you can pick a melody under
Primordial - Gallows Hymn
Primordial - Coffin Ships
Primordial - Where Greater Men Have Fallen
Primordial - Empire Falls
and/or
Primordial - Lain With the Wolf
Yeees! Some Primordial would be awesome. Your suggestion of songs are great and I would like to add
Wield lightning to split the sun
As Rome burns
and
Gods to the godless
Primordial is a great band. “ Coffins Ships” would be awesome to react to.
Primordial - Gods to the Godless :)
Primordial, man... one of my most favorite bands. Definitely a very special one.
For me its "Bloodied yet Unbowed" and "Traitors Gate"
And to think, Ihsahn was only 22 when this album was released(born in 1975, released in 1997), which most likely means this was written when he was 20-21 years old... astounding!
Can't wait to see you reacting to Inno a Satana
Thank you for the review! This song actually changed my life permanetely, I first got in contact with this band when I was 15.
I'm in that crowd! That was an epic show! Thank you for reviewing this. Please check out "Decrystalizing Reason" or "The Eruption", also by Emperor. I thoroughly enjoy your breakdown of lyrics.
Yes! Now I want to hear Windir - Journey to the End. Another masterpiece from Norway. And the founder of the band froze to death in the Norwegian mountains. Check it out. You won’t regret it.
As you guys are watching Vikings, it should be time for some Bathory reaction... Quorthon, the head behind the band, basically invented viking metal, the songs One Rode to Asa Bay or Shores in Flames would be my vote.
Bathory was a big influence for Emperor, they even did a cover of Bathory in their first album.
\m/ (",") \m/
Right! A fine day to die is the name of the song
Ring of Gold man
@@SeraphimBelial Nop, Emperor did A Fine Day to Die cover, you can listent it on In the Nightside Eclipse album.
I was just saying if thy're going to listen to Bathory that they should also listen to Ring of Gold (not that that specific song was the Emperor cover)
Thanks for doing Emperor, guys. No one reacts to Emperor. Hope you can do more. If you can, I’d love Thus Spake the Night Spirit (live if it helps my request. Same show. Unbelievable. 😊). Thanks guys.
At 8:10 Emperor shows who´s the master in the house! Undisputed.
Wow... I have been listening to this album for over a decade and you shed new light on so many places this song could be going or what it could be representing. Excellent job on this one! Great depth in the insight.
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse
@mmzen Did you ever hear Vortex's vocals? Old dimmu is fucking awesome
@@veneficus582 nooo, you don't say that because he's REAL BLACK METAL DUDE, KVVLLLLLTTTTT
@@ogulcanyolcu8714 THE Trve kvlt likes dimmu. He's a poser
This band have alot of history behind them. They hit it big and on the top of black metal and they call it quits. They were on top and they have nothing else to prove. Great band .
Absolutely my favorite song ever. And I enjoyed your commentary as well from beginning to end, thanks!
8:34 The face you make when you realize the intensity of what you're hearing sets in. Metal is a wonderful thing.
Even before I watch this I know it's going to be absolutely epic! Never see(or I've never seen anyone else) react to Emperor and go in depth on them. Everyone has their favourite Emperor song, me included, but this song is the quintessential Emperor masterpiece! Please keep up ploughing through generes and check out some live Emperor it's absolutely unreal!
Aye aye captain
VinAnd Sori Okay I shud have watched it first cause it was live..woops😂
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk 1997 album blow you away - i was 20 & fantastic days - - -
Such an important part of Norwegian black metal in the 90s
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno alive in Athens. Amazing live performance.
Yes!!!!
Yes, that crowd in Athens was amazing.
And review Travel in Stygian while they're at it!
One of the best live albums/dvds to this day.
actually a saw a fan shot video of a show in Greece (I think athens as well) where they did Plagues of Babylon and holy shit the crowd was ridiculous. Listen to that crowd! ua-cam.com/video/RhGWHBZhhq0/v-deo.html Sadly since it was a phone shit video the audio isn't the best but you can hear Stu was on fire vocally and just how insane that crowd was for this band they love so much.
That's a very nice choice.
I remember exactly when "Anthems to the Welking at Dusk" came out and my first listening. The first song wich is an intro to "With Strength I Burn", it builds up, it builds up and BAM it explodes with the begining of "With Strength...". One of my favorite of all time, goosebump each time I listen to it. The two song works so well together.
Thanks Vin and Sori
Nils Couturier eeeeh, the intro leads to Ye Entrancemperium. Also a masterpiece.
This is of course the single greatest piece of music ever written. Part of the greatest album ever written. In fact I think you guys should do a full album listen on this. It's called "Anthems to the welkin at dusk". Think you will be blown away.
Please react to Mgla, they're one of the greatest modern Black Metal bands! Their best song IMO is Exercises in Futility VI.
Plus there is a pretty decent live version of this song ^^
The whole album is perfection
This would be very good to react to indeed!
V is a good track off that album as well. So is I. Whole thing is black metal excellence, really.
I second this. Mgła - Exercises in Futility VI live is brilliant.
I was actually at this performance at Wacken in 2006! What a killer show. i had gotten into Emperor a few years before, and never thought I would get to see them
I am so freaking happy y'all did this
*After Forever: Follow in the Cry* (Live @PINKPOP)
*Nightwish: Song of Myself*
(Live w/Floor Jansen)
*Borknagar: To Mount And Rove*
*Epica: Cry for the Moon*
I love how I've listened to this band since the 6th grade (I'm 34 now) and I'm learning new stuff lyrically now....not just with this song, but with a lot of other ones too that you've covered
Monumental track, one of their best. Great live recording too. Trym is easily one of the best and underrated drummers of the genre and really took their music to the next level after Faust on the first album. The blasting after the solo is savage!
*raises fist in air while singing in majestic voice with eyes closed tightly with tears of joy in awe of the sheer beauty of this song* thanks for the review, guys!
That's Einar from Leprous on keys/extra vocals.... Hint hint Leprous haha
Dude can sing
VinAnd Sori wait till/if you hear him in Leprous 👌
You need to do Leprous "Contaminate Me" live @ Rockefeller feat. Ihsahn from Emperor.
SirRunk good call. I often recommend Forced Entry as an all rounder or any of the first 3 from The Congregation.
Yes, do Leprous!
This! This is the perfect video format! Keep this one. If there isn't a live version, just find a video that just has audio and maybe the album cover or pictures. Quite an interesting interpretation with Jesus walking on the waters of chaos.
Song recommendation: Schammasch - Metanoia
Hey guys! I really want some Helloween in this channel asap. Eagle Fly Free, Future World, Im Alive or Keeper of the seven keys! Thx for your insight on songs i love and even some I dislike. Really fun to watch 🤘
I want out!
Keeper of the 7 keys is a religious allegory, so yeah it would be cool to see Vin translate it into it's real meaning.
Their best song hands down, I have listened to this song hundreds of times and it still moves me everytime.
Great Emperor song! I'll take advantage of the Vin-hack and continue to request Blind Guardian's Mirror Mirror and/or Valhalla live, either the one at Wacken or the one from the Imaginations Through the Looking Glass show.
Imaginations Through The looking Glass version ;)
I have been requesting BG for a while and they have said its listed. So just a matter of time :)
I actually stopped requesting it when they said it was listed. Might have to start up again
Haha hey guys lookin at your faces its seems like you understood the vibe..at least vin ayeway also i love how first and foremost respect was given to the musicianship.. Cheers dudes
I'm sure it wasn't Slipknot that blocked you more than it was youtube or their record company.
The bands are usually never involved in any of this. Blocking is usually lable related in one way or another. Often it's overarching stuff like Vevo.
Yeah, more often than not bands hate this practice too, but their hands are tied since record companies also partially own the recorded versions of the song. There are several examples of situations where band themselves gave the written permissions (or atleast in form of email) to use some song in some UA-cam videos and STILL the video makers had to fight their way through UA-cam and record labels who demonetized their videos.
I told you this guys where the best, the real Emperor ob black metal. Im so happy you did this, I hope you continue to it. Cheers!
You both are great. Anyway one of my favourite Emperor's song.
I've always been on the fence with most black metal, I pretty much concentrated on the atmospheric music and intensity but I kinda took the lyrics for granted, I like the way you guys delve into the meanings.
Therion - In the Desert of Set
Anything out of "Theli" would be great.
I would nominate Ginnungagap as a favourite from Therion. Theli as a whole remains an awesome albums, though.
I was suggesting Ginnungagap in earlier video but I think In the Desert of Set has its all...personally I like Christoffer Johnson's and Piotr's vocals
Great reaction. Emperor is one of my favorite bands, and this song is one of their best. Regarding lyrics: When he sings "Deep Green Dark Chaos", I think he means the northern light. They are very visible and beautiful up in northern Norway, where Ihsahn was born and grew up. It also makes sense that he follows the path of the Northern Light to the soaring cliffs where earth and sky intersect.
Again, THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER MASTER PIECE.
Yes!!!!!!! Finally guys cant wait to get home from work to get to watch it all!
António Gonzalez night shifts ayyy
Fridzo selling beers in a festival here in Portugal hehe
António Gonzalez oh shit
Fridzo not bad though we get to listen to some music make some quick bucks and drink for free not bad imo :F
António Gonzalez hell yeah bro
Great reaction! Since you asked for live videos:
Cult of Luna- Finland (Live Hellfest 2013) The whole show is on youtube aswell and well worth the look.
Love your reaction videos!!!! Specially the PANTERA vids... Emperor is a great band my favorite black metal band . IV equilibrium album is sick , can you do a "curse you all men" reaction? I would love to see your thoughts on it and more of emperor. Ps..... also can you do Cryptopsy phobophile ?
Hi. Vin and Sori Gear. Emperor is Black Metal from Norway, rhythm guitarists Samoth I know him in person. Ihsahn is lead guitarists, lead singer.
Loving the Emperor reactions
I may or may not have sent an overly epic reddit essay to you suggesting some anthems stuff, knew vin would like it and get it, knew Sori would at least appreciate it. The anthems stuff I find incredibly life affirming musically- like ihsahn's bitten onto life and refusing to let go until he wins...
Guys don't blame the band, it's almost always the label and the band doesn't know.
Fair
Ive been waiting for thisssss :D
either that can of redbull is an XL supersize can or you guys are really short... the song is EPIC,your videos are nice too :) cheers from greece
Guys, you have to react to IMMORTAL. I highly recomend video titled "Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness(live Wacken Open Air 2007)HD". Perfect black metal band in a perfect show. If you'll like it, you may also react to other songs from that show like "One by One" or slow and epic "Tyrants".
smelly cat I LOVE that song and whole album. As a Swede it's fun to hear his norwegian pronouciation of Sons... 😁
I'm tempted to suggest a certain very very early Immortal video for the lolz.
But since the songs are short I'd suggest a combo of Unsilent Storms in the Northern Abyss/A Sign for the Norse Hordes to Ride.
Thanks Vin and Sori, my favorite Emperor song hands down! Inno a satana and Curse you all men are other great Emperor songs.
Septicflesh - Dantes Inferno
I enjoyed the song too, it was definitely from the heart...plus I enjoyed how you two put the love performance on the big screen:) Keep up the great great work guys!!!!✌🤘🤙👌👍
In the Nightside Eclipse CD and Shirt was one of my firsts in my collection..a lifetime ago.
I miss my youth...
Dimmu borgir. -Progenies of the great apocalypse. Live 'Forces of the northern night. Like if you agree!
wow I'm going to be thinking about the meaning behind Christ walking on water all week. Thank you guys
Carach Angren-When crows tick on windows.
If you want a band that can tell a story and drag you into their world give this band/song a listen. Really any song by them will serve that purpose
I totally agree, Carach Angren is one of my alltime favorite bands out there, great music and lyrics.
Good stuff! For next live black fire choice do Satyricon - Mother North (Live at the Opera)
LONG LIVE THE ALMIGHTY EMPEROR!🤘
Reign of Darkness by Thy Art is Murder! You lived Holy War and I bet you'll love this one.
I love emperor!!! i love you did this video guys. keep doing more!!!!
First time I've listened to Emperor, as someone who's listened to metal for over 30 years it's a genre I just can't wrap my ears around. There are some parts I didn't mind, and you can also hear some of their influences like Bathory, Venom, Celtic frost, Etc..great Reaction. Testament - Native Blood
This was posted on 22/7/18 and you're talking about 40k subs. It's only 16/8/18 and you're at 52k. That's some crazy channel growth. Congrats, you two!
Love emperor so much good to see you guys give it a chance... please try Immortal in my kingdom cold and also primordial coffin ships or heathen tribes
I present the Vin and Sori drinking game:
Take 1 shot every time Vin mentions Jordan Peterson
Take 2 shots every time the smoke alarm goes off during a song.
Take 3 shots every time Sori says "woah!"
Down the whole bottle if they use the wrong lyric video for a song or if the lyrics in said video are completely wrong.
I take no responsibility for alcohol poisoning brought about by playing the above game.
Hahahaha -Sori🤟🏻
LOL
I don't want to annoy you or anything, just pushing for you to do dome My Dying Bride. Awesome british doom metal. Give it a try. Songs like The Cry of Mankind, She Is the Dark, Catherine Blake, The Wreckage Of My Flesh, And My Father Left Forever, or any other really.
Like Gods of the Sun is awesome also.
Yes, anything by My Dying Bride. Fantastic band that doesn't always get the respect that they deserve.
The cry of mankind yeaah. They should get into doom metal now haha
Totally agree
They do make some beautiful songs yes.
“Scatter the ashes of destiny” best emperor imo. Thanks for doing emperor again. They were/are a huge influence on my playing style to this day
Insanely gifted..still blows my mind the members of Emperor were teenagers not even in there 20s when they wrote Into The Nightside Eclipse
Worth checking out is definitely “Thus Spoke the Night Spirit” from Emperor..or “The Loss and Curse of Reverence”
Pantera-Floods, Slayer-Ghosts of War, Devastation-Deliver the Suffering, Kreator - Awakening of the Gods, Sepultura - Desperate cry, Stevie Ray Vaughan - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - 9/21/1985 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ
Oh. My. God. You guys did it!!! :)
Have you see/review Immortal's One by one at Wacken?
Emperor is one of those bands i really prefer hearing live than the studio recordings (specially "In the Nightside Eclipse and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk stuff). Sounds way more raw and less polished and symphonic (Ihsahns vocals are also more proeminent). My taste obviously.
you might be interested in checking out a band called Panopticon. it is an american bluegrass folk black metal band (well not a band in traditional meaning of the word, one man does it all). specially album kentucky.
Hey man, 'scars of Man...' is a pretty fucking great album too
No Ensiferum so far? You have to do one of some epic songs like Heathen Throne, The Longest Journey (Heathen Throne Part II), Victory Song, Stone Cold Metal, Heathen Horde, Warrior Without a War, Into Battle, In My Sword I Trust ... or Abandoned, Eternal Wait, Lost in Despair, Celestial Bond pt I & II, Tears
Allegaeon “Proponent for Sentience III- The Extermination “
Two amazing lead guitarists and great lyrical content to react to.
Jim Williams Allegaeon is sick. Threshold of Perception would be a good one as well.
Yes, I've requested this one about 15 times now. Hopefully soon they get to this incredible band
I’ve requested this a bunch too, and on some other reaction channels. Allegaeon deserves some recognition and respect.
I'm going to the Wacken festival next week! So hyped!! :D
Masterpiece 🔥👹🔥
Nice song choice!
EMPEROR- INNO A SATANA LIVE
YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED
I see that Zyklon symbol on the guitar - isn’t that the vocalist of Zyklon on bass?
Yeah, Samoth
why a live version tho, shud have listened to the original
I was there! A very memorable concert!
Emperor is the purest form of art. The type they used to burn.
Nice reaction Vin & Sori! You just HAVE to react to: Eye of the Enemy - The Shift. It is the best metal song ever created. Have had some other reaction channels reacting to it and they were all totally amazed. Some discussable lyrics in there too! It is Australian melodic death metal!
Cheers,
William
Can y'all start including the lyrics in the description for videos like this?
I absolutely love your analyses after each reaction as I come from the same worldview as you guys. I have been an agnostic for a while but there is just something in me that keeps me getting convinced that Jesus really was the answer. And to anyone getting triggered, I know, I know... questions. We all have them. But I just see where the world is headed, simply as that. So good to find someone else passionate about theology and metal, it's rare
Emperor, Limbonic Art, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Immortal - different level Music
