It's pretty crazy that in 95 when Metal was considered "Dead", in Sweden this album was released along with Opeth - Orchid, Meshuggah - Destroy erase improve, In flames - The jester race, At the gates - Slaughter of the soul, Dark tranquillity - The gallery
All iconic albums that laid the foundation for metal as we know it today.

Finally someone reacting to one of the best black metal bands in history. A truly historic band. So much... feeling in their sound.
In another of their songs, "Unhallowed", that guitar solo is just... tear jerking. You actually hear that guitar cry.
I had the privilege to see them live years back on their last tour. Just wonderful.

When I listened to this song a lot back in the 90s where I still went to school, I always had this thought that the angels is a child (pure, innocent, untainted) and the darkness is the bad parts of our modern society (bad parenthood, street gangs, bullying at school etc.) and the innocent child ends up getting drawn to that darkness, being grasped by it and dying as a result of it. The dead angel is later described so beautifully, snow white dress with crystals of ice and roses so red, as if one would remember what it once was.

Being that you guys seem interested in different views, and you're interested in theology obviously, you might find Jon's beliefs interesting. They're not really that know even among his fans, but they're pretty interesting. He wasn't simply a satanist, but was a sort of a gnostic, a polytheistic and dualist one, with a mesopotamian based syncretistic theology. The theology of the organization of which he was a part of, Misanthropic Luciferian Order, later renamed Temple of the Black Light - is that there exist two groups of gods - the chaos gods, and the cosmic gods. The chaos gods, dark gods, are older, at least the primordial Tiamat and Abzu, who in their dream produce several cosmic gods, the light gods (who then produce more cosmic gods). Tiamat and Abzu want to destroy the cosmic gods, and make more chaos gods, and there's a war. Cosmic gods win that war. The main and most powerful cosmic god (even though he is a second generation cosmic god) is Marduk. Marduk is the demiurge, who makes the cosmos. He can't make it out of nothing, so he makes it from Tiamat's dead body, and that's why the cosmos isn't perfectly ordered and good, but ambivalent, has both order and chaos. He wants to make some beings in the material world with minds, so those beings could worship and obey him. But to make humans who have a mind, he needs to do it by giving them a piece of divinity, and since no cosmic god wants to offer themself, he uses an imprisoned chaos god - Kingu, and that's why humans are called blood of Kingu. Also that's why humans often don't obey him, they have the anti-cosmic black flame inside them. Marduk presented himself to humans not just as Marduk in Mesopotamia, but also as the abrahamic god, Zeus, Ra, Ahura Mazda, Odin, Vishnu, etc. The most powerful of the chaos gods is Satan, who was know to people also as Samael, Typhon, Set, Ahriman, Loki, etc. After Satan the most powerful god is the goddess Lilith, also known as Kali, Aeshma, etc. Tiamat is called Tehom in the Bible in the beginning of Genesis, and Yahweh is praised several times for defeating (rebuking, taming) the mighty waters. Eschatologically, chaos gods will prevail, the black holes will destroy the cosmos, the chaos gods will destroy the cosmic gods, and everything will again be chaos. People who have their inner black flame burning will be spared and live on with chaos gods. And the black flame burns basically when people do what they want instead of obeying the rules, especially religious morality. The album Reinkaos is basically just religious songs which express his faith.

Similar, but his religion was the reverse of what Cathars (and Bogomils, and Tondrakians, and Marcionites) believed and what Zoroastrians believe, they all worship(ed) light and order, which they see as co-eternal with darkness and chaos, whereas Jon believed light and order to be an unfortunate creation of chaos and darkness, and he worshiped the latter. That's why "satanism".

This band is the epitome of perfect melodic black metal. Jon was a one of a kind writer, not to mention his unique voice. I fell in love with black metal with this band, and to this day, their last album is the one I consider life-changing, musician wise. Black metal forever! And you are correct, a decent amount of black metal pulls from pagan folklore and the influence can be heard in this music. Here are some more black metal recommendations:
Dissection - Black Dragon, The Somberlain, or Retribution - Storm of the Light's Bane
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
M8l8th - Beyond the Twilights, or Scum
Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time, or Mighty Ravendark
Mgla - Exercises in Futility IV
    Tribulation - Here be Dragons
Burzum - Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament, Dunkelheit
Marduk - Bleached Blones, Frontschwein, Christraping Black Metal
    Peste Noire - Dueil Angoisseus
    Goatmoon - Black Metal Winter
Satanic Warmaster - Black Metal Kommando

    • @Aevius1200
      @Aevius1200 6 років тому +3

Only maybe two of those bands are legitimate NSBM. Even so, I am quite clearly not a national socialist, and I think that the music can be enjoyed while not being one. Black metal has always embraced pernicious ideas, and that would lead to an interesting discussion in a reaction video anyway. Out of NSBM bands, I simply enjoy the unfettered emotion that gets transferred over to their songs, as it is difficult to fake it. I highly doubt anyone who is open-minded enough to watch Vin and Sori's videos are going to be a Nazi anyway.

Im biased from when they were much blacker in their founding, back when they were still called Grotesque. I understand that they're not melodic death, though I think that Slaughter of the Soul is more black metal than anything else, at least in my opinion. It has that classic 90's black metal riff running through the entire thing.

They were also the first black metal band in Jerusalem, and they basically got kicked out of the city because of their music and they went to Northern Europe (I think the Netherlands). But yea, they are an awesome band that really shows you don’t have to be singing about Satan or Scandinavian paganism to be black metal, and that the Middle East is quite an inspiration for black metal. I agree Multiple truths would be a good first song for @Vinand Sori to react to.

Good ol' Dissection. I remember what was probably my first comment on your videos, where I mentioned Dissection. This was before I started requesting Agalloch almost every day (consider this a request too), so on your first "Christians react to Black Metal video" I guess.
As I said at the time, I didn't listen to Black Metal, until I heard this song, I just loved how beautiful the melodies were, while the whole thing still sounds malignant at the same time. I mentioned it a few times after, when you delved into Black Metal, because I feel like it's a great starting point to get into the genre, based on my experience I guess.
So yeah, glad you enjoyed it a little bit at least. :)

Jon wasn't being metaphoric or deep here, just matching the lyrics to the music, expressing his disdain for Judeo-Christian faiths. He was troubled, and he didn't grasp the things he believed in. He didn't even realize the Enuma Elish was describing a celestial collision, and if I'm not mistaken, he was anti-Marduk. If he only knew Marduk was the basis for Satan...

  • @bojnebojnebojne

What i got out if this song is that it is a concept of corruption of purity.
For what is purer than an angel?
Nothing is pure through and through.
And if an Angel can be corrupted, who are we mere humans to think that we are any better.
The roses growing across then plain, are formed from the corrupted blood of the fallen angel.
The corrupted angel that's being covered in snow.
It is basically a symbolic representation of how untruth and the lies of politics and general deception is contagious and dangerous to us as human beings.
Be wary of your position herein, for it is a fragile one.
Darkness is a soothing thing for it require almost no energy.
Light in order to exist require massive amounts of energy in comparison to darkness.
Light nor Darkness can exist without the other.
The story of religion is the eternal struggle and battle between the 2 sides within our soul.

Yet another Swedish band. Their musicianship is unmatched. Now try Children of Bodom. A Finnish band but........I cant classify them. Extreme. Yet influenced by 80's metal. The vocalist is an amazing guitarist. MY fave guitarist in fact.

I think the audio on our end is a bit low quality. I know the song is meant to be low fi, but it has a hiss in the top end that's usually a sign of missing info in the track. Still love the song, reminds me of some mates that used to play black metal on the improve and were always up for playing for hours after the actual gigs had wrapped up.
Not sure if I had mentioned it but I used to help run a metal venue called Bloodshed. All ages gig once a month. Lasted for about 5 years until we lost the shed we ran out of, but we helped kick start the local scene and it has been mostly going strong ever since. That was in Darwin Australia. Don't mind if I share your page on our FB page do you?

ledgm108 yes the live version is probably my favorite chains song but couldn't find a lyric video for the live version. I'd have to say tripod was the saddest album in music history. Facelift was like heading into dark stuff ....dirt was dark and heavy but tripod was like party is over and no hope. But Layne's best vocals we're always live version. Best singer in metal history if you call chains metal. To me they were just sludge metal like Sabbath with grunge lyric content.
